Bruno Frazatto recently found himself with a great opportunity on his hands. At a paradise beach town in Santa Catarina state, he was able to enjoy a seminar alongside Ricardo De La Riva and even roll with successful model and black belt Paulo Zulu.

“Man, I really liked De La Riva. I didn’t know him personally before. He’s real chill, humble, and good people, not to mention how much he knows about Jiu-Jitsu. His students in attendance were really funny and we were laughing the whole time!” he tells GRACIEMAG.com.

Besides the great time with De La Riva, the Atos rep was able to get in a few rolls with Paulo Zulu, whose Guard academy is set up in his own home.

“Zulu doesn’t mess around, he’s tough as nails. He’ll give everyone a hard time if he enters his division at tournaments,” he says.

Now with his attention focused on competing, Frazatto is coming off a win at the World Cup, where he had three matches and beat former world champion Mário Reis in the final.

“It was an awesome match, 4-4 on points and 3-2 in advantage points. Mário is dangerous, and you always have to be careful with him,” he remarks.

Now he’s looking ahead to the 2011 season, with the European Open coming up on the 27th to the 30th of January, in Lisbon, Portugal.

“Training is going off. I’m going to spend New Year’s in Rio, but I’ll be at Ary Farias’s house, so we’ll be training hard,” he says in closing.

Bruno Frazatto teve uma oportunidade das boas recentemente. Num dos paraísos do litoral de Santa Catarina, pôde desfrutar de um seminário ao lado de Ricardo De La Riva e ainda dar uns rolas com modelo de sucesso e faixa-preta Paulo Zulu.

“Cara, gostei muito do De La Riva, não o conhecia ainda pessoalmente. Ele é muito tranquilo, uma pessoa humilde e gente boa demais, sem contar que sabe muito Jiu-Jitsu. Os alunos dele que estavam lá também eram muito engraçados e a gente ria sem parar!”, conta ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Além disso, o representante da Atos aproveitou para dar uns rolas com Paulo Zulu, que mantém, na Guarda, um dojô na própria casa.

“O Zulu não é de bobeira não, o cara é duro para caramba. Se entrar na categoria dele nos campeonatos vai dar trabalho a todos”, diz.

Focado agora nas competições, Frazatto vem de vitória no World Cup, torneio em que fez três lutas e venceu na final o gaúcho Mário Reis.

“Foi um lutão, 4 a 4 nos pontos e 3 a 2 nas vantagens. O Mario é perigoso e sempre é preciso tomar cuidado com ele”, comenta.

As atenções se voltam para o início da temporada 2011, com o Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu, que acontece nos dias 27, 28, 29 e 30 de janeiro, em Lisboa.

“Os treinos já estão pegando fogo. Vou ao Rio passar o ano-novo, mas fico na casa do Ary Farias, então vamos treinar duro!”, encerra.

Depois do ouro no Mundial Sem Kimono, Beatriz Mesquita encerrou o calendário esportivo 2010 mais uma vez no alto do pódio. Detentora do cinturão da World Cup 2009, a faixa-marrom da Gracie Humaitá confirmou o favoritismo defendendo o título no último fim de semana, em São Paulo.

Na competição, Bia finalizou Luiza Monteiro com um estrangulamento pelas costas, aos 2min de luta, o que valeu o prêmio de R$1.500, além de permanecer com o cinturão por mais um ano.

“Estou muito feliz, porque pude mostrar que o Jiu-Jitsu feminino também tem seu brilho técnico. Ainda embolsei uma graninha para o Natal!”, comenta aos risos.

Agora a lutadora de Saquarema, no litoral fluminense do Rio de Janeiro, foca os próximos desafios.

“Agora é treinar muito para a seletiva de Abu Dhabi e para o Europeu, em janeiro”, finaliza.

Following her gold medal-winning performance at the No-Gi Worlds, Beatriz Mesquita wrapped up the 2010 competition calendar atop the winners’ podium yet again. Holder of the 2009 World Cup belt, the Gracie Humaitá brown belt confirmed her favorite status defending her title last weekend in São Paulo.

At the competition, Bia submitted Luiza Monteiro with a choke from back mount two minutes in, yielding here $R 1,500, as well as the honor of keeping her belt for yet another year.

“I’m happy because I was able to show female Jiu-Jitsu has technical shine to it too. Plus I got some money for Christmas,” she says with a jovial laugh.

Now the fighter from the coastal town of Saquarema is focused on her upcoming challenges.

“Now I’m going to train a lot for the Abu Dhabi trials and the European Open, in January,” she says in finishing.

Usually the main standout at a competition is the winner of the absolute division, but Eduardo Santoro, or “Português” as he’s known around Cia Paulista academy, divided the attention at this past weekend’s World Cup in São Paulo. After winning the master absolute, the black belt dove into the adult division, winning the medium heavyweight class after beating the likes of Guto Campos and Sérgio Moraes by submission. Before winning the competition, however, Santoro had an even greater challenge.

“I suffered a groin injury following the Worlds and, when I was just about recovered, my meniscus popped out of place and I had to operate. I only returned to training on November 8, so I had four weeks to get ready for the competition,” he says.

“But, no matter how bad things were, I’m persistent and don’t give up. That was important while I was on ice,” adds Português, who goes on to comment on his campaign at the event:

“First I entered the master absolute, where I had three matches and closed out the final. I beat Eduardo Telles in the semifinal and, as the adult division was about to commence, I talked it over with André Bastos and we split the prize. Following my last match in the master division, I even had mixed thoughts about going into the adult. I didn’t rest at all and went in to face Yan Cabral. My bracket was sinister and I didn’t know if I could take it.”

After that, Santoro beat Alex Monsalve (Alliance), before facing the burliest fighters signed up in the division.

“I faced Guto Campos in the semifinal. We were tied up until the end, when I managed to finish with a triangle. I got to rest a bit before going into the final against Sergio (Moraes), and I knew he was a very strategic opponent, hard to score on. But I managed to replace guard, I sunk an omoplata and, when I closed guard, I did a position I’ve been doing for a long time and managed to finish with the armbar. I couldn’t believe it at the time!” he said jubilantly. Now recovered from his injuries, the black belt expects to give a lot of people a hard time in 2011.

“Next year I want to be in all the major competitions, since I spent so much time on ice in 2010. I want to enter the Pan, Worlds, the Fepa events here in São Paulo, and go to Abu Dhabi.

But the joy was not all his. His master, Max Trombini, was quite pleased and he too played an important part in the win.

“Portuga asked me: ‘Sensei, should I or shouldn’t I compete in the adult?’ I told him: ‘Warrior, you signed up in the division and didn’t do the master final. So fight with joy, have fun, because this is your world. I want to see that old Portuga again!’ And he had a great championship,” he says.

“Training at Cia. Paulista is tough and he’s been used to it since he was a white belt, was always very disciplined. I’m a teacher who’s a disciplinarian and severe, to some grumpy, but I demand discipline so they don’t get soft. I’d rather pull my army than push it,” says Max in closing, prideful of his student.

Geralmente o principal destaque das competições é o vencedor do absoluto, mas Eduardo Santoro, o Português da Cia Paulista, dividiu as atenções durante o World Cup, no último final de semana, em São Paulo. Depois de lutar no absoluto master, o faixa-preta partiu direto para a categoria adulto, vencedor no peso meio-pesado, tendo derrotado por finalização pedreiras como Guto Campos e Sérgio Moraes. Mas, antes de vencer a competição, Santoro teve um desafio ainda maior.

“Tive uma lesão na virilha depois do Mundial e, quando estava quase recuperado, meu menisco saiu do lugar e tive que operar. Só voltei a treinar no dia 8 de novembro, então foram apenas quatro semanas antes da competição”, conta.

“Mas, por mais que eu esteja numa fase ruim, sou persistente e não desisto. Isso foi importante no tempo que fiquei parado”, completa Português, que comenta a campanha no evento.

“Primeiro lutei o absoluto master, em que fiz três lutas e fechei a final. Derrotei o Eduardo Telles na semifinal e, como já ia começar a categoria adulto, conversei com o André Bastos e dividimos o prêmio. Depois da minha última luta no master, fiquei até na dúvida se iria ou não no adulto. Nem descansei e já fui enfrentar o Yan Cabral. A minha chave estava sinistra e não sabia se iria aguentar.”

Depois disso, Santoro bateu feras como Alex Monsalve (Alliance), até enfrentar as maiores feras inscritas na categoria.

“Enfrentei o Guto Campos na semifinal. A luta estava empatada até o fim, quando consegui finalizar no triângulo. Pude descansar um pouco para final contra o Serginho (Moraes) e sabia que ele era um adversário muito estratégico, difícil de fazer pontos. Ele é um cara que tem a base muito boa, joga bem em pé, me deu uma queda e ficou por cima. Mas consegui repor a guarda, encaixei a omoplata e, quando fechei a guarda, fiz uma posição que faço há bastante tempo e consegui finalizar no armlock. Na hora não acreditei!”, comemora. Agora recuperado das lesões, o faixa-preta espera dar bastante trabalho em 2011.

“Ano que vem quero lutar todos os principais eventos, já que em 2010 fiquei muito tempo parado. Quero lutar o Pan, Mundial, os eventos aqui de São Paulo organizados pelo Fepa e ir para Abu Dhabi”, encerra.

Mas a alegria não foi apenas do lutador. Seu mestre, Max Trombini, ficou mui contente e também teve importante papel na vitória.

“O Portuga perguntou: ‘Sensei, luto ou não luto o adulto?’ Disse a ele: ‘Guerreiro, você se escreveu na categoria e deixou de lutar a final do absoluto master. Então lute com alegria, divirta-se, porque este é seu mundo. Quero ver aquele velho Portuga de sempre!’ E ele fez um grande campeonato”, diz.

“O treino na Cia. Paulista é forte e ele está acostumado com isso desde a faixa branca, sempre foi muito disciplinado. Sou um professor disciplinador ou severo, para outros rabugento, mais exijo disciplina para não ficarem no salto alto. Prefiro puxar a empurrar meu exercito”, encerra Max, orgulhoso do pupilo.

O galinho tricampeão mundial, Bruno Malfacine terminou o ano com chave de ouro, no World Cup, em São Paulo, no último domingo. Na final do evento, o representante da Alliance derrotou o também campeão mundial Pablo Silva (Gracie Barra BH).

“Foi uma luta muito dura, com muitas raspagens. Vinha perdendo nas vantagens até o último minuto, mas consegui raspar para fazer 6 a 4”, diz o “Bad Boy”, que fez um total de quatro lutas.

Para 2011, Malfacine espera um ano ainda melhor.

“Foi tudo perfeito em 2010. Venci o Europeu, Pan, Brasileiro, Mundial e todos os eventos organizados pelo Fepa, incluindo o World Cup. Espero que 2011 seja ainda melhor. Vou me internar na academia!”.

E a preparação para a nova temporada já começou.

“Já estou treinando duro para o Europeu. Queria agradecer muito a Deus, ao Fabio Gurgel, ao preparador Edson Ramalho e aos meus patrocinadores. Sem eles não seria possível”, encerra.

“It was a tough match with lots of sweeps. I was behind on advantages up until the last minute, but I managed to sweep and make it 6-4,” says the “Bad Boy,” who had a total of four fights.

Malfacine has even higher hopes for 2011.

“Everything went perfectly in 2010. I won the Euro, the Pan, Brazilian Nationals, Worlds, and all the Fepa events, including the World Cup. I hope 2011 will be even better. I’m going to check myself in at the academy!”

And his preparations for the coming season have already begun.

“I’m training hard for the European. I’d like to thank God, Fabio Gurgel, my physical conditioning coach, and my sponsors. Without them none of this would be possible,” he says in closing.
