The art of grabbing your opponent’s gi and manipulating it to lead the fight where you want can be, at the start of your contact with BJJ, quite a mystery.

Enter Marcos Schubert, a teacher in Curitiba who, with his knowledge and didactics, is able to clear up the main mistakes people tend to make when making grips.

One of the first ones, and which most undermine the student’s progress, is to grab the cloth in no particular manner, expending muscular strength and energy unnecessarily.

“The grip must be firm, indeed, but it must also be flexible,” he says.

Another common mistake: not using the thumb and index as tweezers while grabbing the enemy gi. Schubert recommends using three fingers glued together in combination with the tweezers. It’s a strong, mobile grip, and one that doesn’t require too much strength.

The third and most common grip mistake is thinking that a firm, flexible grip is only useful in stand-up. The teacher says that it’s precisely on the ground that the grip with the well-positioned fingers can make the biggest difference, as you maneuver between positions.

Nalati. IBJJF

Held last weekend in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the IBJJF’s BH Open brought some of the country’s top players to the famous Mineirinho stadium.

Otávio Nalati (Lloyd Irvin) bagged double gold with wins in the ultra-heavy and absolute divisions. Tayane Porfírio unfortunately had no opponents in either the super-heavy or the women’s open division, and so she got double gold as well.

To Nalati, glory came as he defeated local fighter Cássio Francis (Gracie Barra) at ultra-heavy and then faced Sérvio Tulio (Gracie Barra), who had won the medium heavyweight title, in the absolute final. Nalati used pressure from the top to secure the top spot.

In the masters’ age group, Alberto Ramos, of GFTeam Cachambi, won four titles across gi and no-gi contests. Read on for the weekend’s results.

Jan Blachowicz’s unexpected move.

A night of great matches in Poland with the 188th edition of UFC Fight Night, held this Saturday in Gdansk. The main event saw Darren Till defeat the favorite, Donald Cerrone, by TKO to remain unbeaten, but a different fight was more interesting to us BJJ fans.

Jan Blachowicz, a local athlete and former KSW champion, faced Devin Clark as part of the main card. After a first round with a lot going on, Blachowicz came back hungry. Clark threw himself at him in an attempt to secure a win via striking, but, as he reached the mesh, Clark was surprised by Blachowicz and his standing rear naked choke. The adjustment was on point, and the pressure caused Clark to quickly tap out 3’02” into round 2.

Anfitrião da noite, André Muniz conta com a força de seus familiares e amigos que estarão presentes no ginásio para incentivá-lo ao triunfo. O montes-clarense só não terá o apoio da mãe, que não consegue acompanhar suas lutas por conta do nervosismo. No último confronto que realizou pelo WOCS, André foi derrotado por Júlio Cesar Santos na edição de número 30, na disputa do cinturão dos médios, interrompendo uma boa sequência de duas vitórias no evento. Voltando à cidade natal, o atleta busca motivação para apagar a imagem da última performance.

“Motiva bastante lutar em casa, mas por outro lado tem a pressão de vencer. Vai estar todo mundo me olhando e não quero decepcionar de novo. Mas todo campeão tem que saber lidar com essa pressão, faz parte na vida de qualquer atleta. Espero trazer isso para o lado positivo. Pena que minha mãe que não vai estar presente. Ela não aguenta me ver tomando pancada”, conta, aos risos.

André, que carrega o apelido de “Sergipano”, começou na luta aos 13 anos, e ao entrar na academia, não escapou das brincadeiras dos companheiros. “Comecei cedo nos treinos, e o pessoal começou a implicar comigo por causa da cabeça chata, de nordestino mesmo (risos). Aí surgiu esse apelido, que acabou pegando”, relembra.

Seu adversário, Marcelo “The Animal” Barbosa faz sua estreia no WOCS. Sem se preocupar com a pressão da torcida e já acostumado a esse tipo de situação, o mineiro da capital quer derrotar André Muniz diante da torcida local do rival, seja no chão ou em pé. Para isso, relembra uma situação difícil que enfrentou para servir de inspiração.

“A maioria das vezes que lutei sempre foi com a maioria da torcida contra. Então vou tirar de letra. O que está de fora não pode interferir dentro do cage”, garante, relembrando. “Teve um GP em Belo Horizonte que fiz duas lutas na noite. O primeiro adversário era bom de jiu-jitsu e o segundo no muay thai. No primeiro queria ficar em pé e ele me levava para o chão, mas consegui nocautear mesmo assim. Passei mal após a luta e sabia que seria muito difícil lutar com o segundo, que gostava do duelo em pé. Então levei pro chão e bati nele os três rounds. Portanto acho que não faz diferença, no chão ou em pé, estou preparado”, confia Marcelo.
