The submission- and knockout-filled evening saw two up-and-coming Brazilian fighters put on splendid displays on their way big league in Renan Barão and Yuri Marajó, Dominick Cruz stamp his authority on the bantamweight division as the first divisional champion of the UFC, and definition of Anthony Pettis as the next challenger to the UFC lightweight throne, after Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard face off.

A noite foi cheia de finalizações e, além das vitórias de Renan Barão e Yuri Marajó, novos talentos que agora devem brilhar no Ultimate, definiu o primeiro campeão de plumas do UFC, Dominick Cruz , e o desafiante ao cinturão de leves da organização de Dana White, Anthony Pettis.

An historic night in Arizona, WEC 53 marked the farewell to the promotion that now folds its roster and weight divisions into the UFC.

The fight that brought the WEC to an end after fifty-three shows could not have been more spectacular. In the lightweight title fight, Ben Henderson started out well against Anthony Pettis and dominated the first round. However, starting in the second the challenger took charge. He brought danger from back mount and landed solid strikes. The fight went back and forth, but Pettis always ended with the advantage. In the final round came the most striking moment. Anthony jumped against the cage and on his return three a spot-on kick to Henderson’s face. A well-deserved win for Pettis, who in the UFC will have a shot at the title against the winner of the fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

The fight between Dominick Cruz and challenger Scott Jorgensen was worth the bantamweight belt, but the UFC’s. The WEC champion dominated five rounds. Throwing all kinds of boxing combinations, Cruz mixed in knees and takedowns as well as defending well when on the receiving end. The new UFC champion holds a record of 17 wins and only one loss.

In the preliminary-card action, two Brazilian up-and-comers in the organization had their day. Renan Barão finished Chris Cariaso with a rear-naked choke in the opening round, notching his second win in the event in two fights. Promotional first-timer Yuri Marajó knocked out Ricardo Lamas also in the firs round. Now both go on to a career in the UFC.

Noite histórica no Arizona, no WEC 53, última edição da organização, que agora cede seu plantel de atletas e categorias para o UFC.

Não poderia ter sido mais espetacular a luta que finalizou o WEC, depois de 53 edições. Na disputa de cinturão de leves, Ben Henderson começou bem contra Anthony Pettis e dominou o primeiro round. No entanto, a partir da segunda parcial o desafiante passou a ser superior. Levou perigo nas costas e conectou bons golpes na trocação. A luta teve muitas reviravoltas, mas Pettis sempre terminava em vantagem. No último assalto o momento mais marcante. Anthony pulou na lateral das grades e, no mesmo impulso, voltou com um chute certeiro no rosto de Henderson. Vitória merecida para Pettis que, no UFC, vai ter a chance de disputar o cinturão contra o vencedor da luta entre Frankie Edgar e Gray Maynard.

A luta entre Dominick Cruz e o desafiante Scott Jorgensen valeu o título de plumas, só que do UFC. O campeão do WEC dominou os cinco rounds. Cheio de esquivas, Cruz variou bem com socos, chutes, joelhadas e quedas, além de se defender muito bem nos poucos momentos de sufoco. Agora, campeão do UFC, mantém o cartel de 17 vitórias e apenas uma derrota. 

Nas primeiras lutas da noite, vitória de duas apostas brasileiras na organização. Renan Barão usou o mata-leão para finalizar Chris Cariaso no assalto inicial e vencer pela segunda vez no evento. Estreante, Yuri Marajó nocauteou Ricardo Lamas, também na primeira parcial. Agora ambos seguem carreira no UFC.

Depois de nove anos, o WEC encerra suas atividades na noite desta quinta-feira com a edição 53. A organização tem seu fim e passa atodas as suas categorias de peso para o UFC. Sendo assim, o evento define o futuro de alguns dos seus melhores lutadores e promete ser eletrizante. Tudo é transmitido ao vivo pelo Combate, a partir da meia-noite.

O show determinará quem será o primeiro campeão peso pluma do UFC, com o combate entre o detentor do cinturão Dominick Cruz e o desafiante Scott Jorgensen. Na luta principal da noite, o campeão dos leves Ben Henderson encara o perigoso Anthony Pettis. O vencedor tem a chance contra o campeão peso leve do UFC, que sai do duelo entre Frankie Edgar e Gray Maynard, no primeiro dia de 2011.

Além das disputas de cinturão, dois brasileiros estarão em ação no Arizona, Estados Unidos. O potiguar Renan Barão, pupilo de Jair Lourenço na Kimura Nova União, cai para dentro de Chris Cariaso, em busca da segunda vitória no evento. Já o paraense Yuri Marajó, campeão do Jungle Fight, debuta no torneio contra Ricardo Lamas.

After nine years, the WEC will come to a stop at its fifty-third installment. The promotion will now cease to exist and hand all the fighters on its roster and two weight divisions over to the UFC. Thus being the case, tonight’s event shall define the future of some of the organization’s better fighters and promises to be a riveting show.

The event will determine who goes on to be the first-ever bantamweight champion of the UFC, with Dominick Cruz defending his WEC belt against Scott Jorgensen. In the evening’s main event, lightweight champion Ben Henderson faces the dangerous Anthony Pettis. The winner will be the next challenger to the UFC lightweight belt to be decided on the first day of the new year between Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard.

Besides the title fights, there will be two promising Brazilians in action in Arizona. A Jair Lourenço student at Kimura Nova União training with José Aldo and Co. in Rio, Renand Barão will be looking for a second win in two fights for the promotion against Chris Cariaso. Now Jungle Fight champion Yuri Marajó makes his debut in the event against Ricardo Lamas.
