GRACIEMAG.com previously warned about Tie Quan Zhang (here), a Ruy Menezes black belt with slick ground skills on China Top Team. Unbeaten in seventeen fights, the Chinese fighter most often relies on his submission savvy to end his bouts. That’s how it went at WEC 51 on September 30, when he quickly put away Pablo Garza on his promotional debut.

“He won by guillotine at 2:26 min. Now he’ll be back in the WE on December 16 in Phoenix against Daniel “Danny Boy” Downes. Tie Quan has seventeen fights on his record and is undefeated,” comments trainer Ruy Menezes.

“He’s the first fighter from China to sign a WEC contract and we’ll probably put an athlete into the UFC in the first half of 2011,” adds the coach.

GRACIEMAG.com já havia avisado sobre Tie Quan Zhang (leia aqui), atleta bom de chão do faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Ruy Menezes, na China Top Team.  Invicto em 17 lutas, o chinês costuma finalizar seus combates. Foi assim no WEC 51, no dia 30 de setembro, quando definiu rapidamente contra Pablo Garza na estreia pela organização.   

“Ele ganhou com uma guilhotina aos 2min26s. Agora voltará ao WEC no dia 16 de dezembro, em Phoenix, contra Daniel “Danny Boy” Downes. O Tie Quan tem 17 lutas de MMA e está invicto”, comenta o treinador Ruy Menezes.   

“Ele foi o primeiro chinês a assinar contrato com o WEC e provavelmente colocarei um atleta no UFC no primeiro semestre de 2011.”, completa o treinador.

José Aldo defendeu com sucesso o cinturão de penas do WEC, pela segunda vez, nesta quinta-feira. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu e muay thai aplicou, em Manny Gamburyan, o sétimo nocaute em oito lutas na organização. Ainda nos EUA, Aldinho conversou com o GRACIEMAG.com. Confira o bate-papo: 

No primeiro round a torcida vaiou um pouco, pois foi bem estudado. Mas, na segunda parcial, veio rapidamente o nocaute… 

Foi o que fizemos no treinamento. Fui soltando alguns golpes para ver como ele reagiria. Fui calculando os movimentos, trabalhando em cima disso e, graças a Deus, deu tudo certo. 

A cada vitória sua, logo em seguida, todos comentam sobre a possibilidade de você subir de categoria e até fazer uma disputa de cinturão no UFC, no peso leve. Você acha que pode ir bem na categoria de cima? Aceitaria lutar até 70kg?

Aceitaria, com certeza. Tenho plenas condições de lutar no UFC, mas não depende apenas de mim. Teria que conversar com as pessoas que trabalham comigo, com o Dedé (Pederneiras), meu treinador, e o Joinha (Jorge Guimarães), meu empresário. O que eles decidem é sempre o melhor. Mas acredito que tenha plenas condições de lutar na categoria de cima. Não teria problema algum.

O Gamburyan fez muitas provocações antes da luta. Isso incomodou você em algum momento?

Os lutadores têm isso, é um modo de promover a luta. Então, acho que foi marketing mesmo e não ligo muito para isso, não esquento a cabeça. Mantenho o foco, chego lá e faço o meu trabalho. Sabia que ia dar tudo certo e não caí na pilha dele não.

Sentiu a altitude durante o combate?

Foi tudo tranquilo. Chegamos antes da luta e fizemos a preparação final. Deu tudo certo, tanto para mim como para o Diego Nunes. Não senti diferença não.

Mas acha que outros lutadores sentiram?

Acho que todas as lutas foram diferentes das que estamos acostumados a ver no WEC, por causa da altitude. O pessoal estava mais preso, mais precavido, com medo de cansar. Mas eu e o Diego estávamos bem. Deu tudo certo mais uma vez e vamos continuar nesse caminho

José Aldo successfully defended his WEC featherweight title for the second time this Thursday. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt and muay thai specialist notched his seventh knockout win in the promotion, over Manny Gamburyan. Still in the USA, Aldo spoke with GRACIEMAG.com. Check out what he had to say:

In the first round the crowd booed a bit, as there was a lot of study going on. But in the second round, the knockout came quickly…

That’s what we went over in training. I threw some strikes to see how he’d react. I calculated his movements, worked based on that and, thank God, it all worked out.

Shortly following each of your wins everyone always talks about the possibility of your moving up in weight and even having a title fight in the UFC lightweight division. Do you think you’ll do well in the division above yours? Would you accept a 155-lbs fight?

I would, for sure. I have what it takes to fight in the UFC, but that doesn’t depend on me. I’d have to talk to the people who work with me, like Dedé (Pederneiras), my coach, and Joinha (Jorge Guimarães), my manager. What they decide on is always what’s best. But I believe I have all it takes to fight in the upper division. There’d be no problem at all.

Gamburyan provoked you a lot before the fight. Did that bother you at any point?

Fighters do that; it’s a way of promoting the fight. So I feel it was just marketing and I don’t pay it much mind, it doesn’t bother me. I keep focused, get out there and do my job. I knew it was going to work out and I didn’t fall for it.

Did you feel the Colorado altitude during the fight?

It was fine. We showed up before the fight and did our final preparations. It all worked out, both for me and for Diego Nunes. I didn’t feel any difference.

But do you think the other fighters felt it?

I feel all the fights were different from what we’re used to seeing in the WEC, because of the altitude. Everyone held back more, was more cautious, for fear of getting tired. But Diego and I did well. It all worked out yet again and we’re going to carry on on this path.

With 15 wins and a single defeat to his name, Diego Nunes made it to his fourth win in five fights for the WEC. His triumph over Tyler Toner this Thursday in Colorado came by way of unanimous decision. Now the fighter is eying his next challenge, likely against Mark Hominick, who saw action at the same event and beat Leonard Garcia convincingly.

What are your thoughts on your fight with Tyler Toner?

I tried to give it my best and I did what we had worked on as a team. We had in mind exactly what ended up happening. We’d drummed up a plan based on Toner as a world champion kickboxer. He has a really heavy hand, but we did well standing and in taking him to the ground. I think I won by a large margin, even though some of the judges gave one of the rounds to him.

What does your future in the WEC look like after this win?

Yesterday I had a talk with Joinha (Jorge Guimarães, his manager) and they told me they’d like to see me against Mark Hominick. I know a bit about him and I’ll study him further when I get back to Brazil. He’s a good striker, has great boxing. He moves really well, so much so that Leonard Garcia couldn’t find him in the cage. I feel it’s a great fight to further improve my standing in the event, as he’s coming off two good wins and his name carries weight.

You went to train at Nova União for this fight. What has changed?

Everything’s changed. It’s like I dove into new water and came out renewed, purified. Everything I learned there I hadn’t trained before. It’s a different training methodology and, thank God, it fit in great. I have a lot more to learn from them and it’s been a pleasure.

What was it like fighting at altitude in Colorado?

We did our planning with Dedé (André Pederneiras) and Pedro “Cuban”, our wrestling coach. They did the calculations just right as to how much time we needed to show up in advance to acclimatize. The air really is drier and heavy, you really feel it in your lungs. We wore out a lot, during the first training sessions. But we stayed there another ten days running and training and that made a difference. You can just compare us to the other fighters on the same night. A lot of them gassed out in the first round and José Aldo and I fought really well. I was quite explosive and felt great.

“In the first round, I just studied him to see what he had in mind for me. When I came back in the second, I knew. So all I had to do was carry out what we’d practiced in the gym,” Aldo remarks.

“To me, my reign will last forever. I train hard to get out here and represent all my companions who help me,” said the fighter in finishing.

Now the bout between Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner offered the crowd a lot of excitement and, deservedly, took the prize for fight of the night worth ten thousand dollars. Best submission went to Migues Torres and knockout of the night went to George Roop.

Com 15 vitórias e apenas uma derrota, Diego Nunes chegou à quarta vitória em cinco lutas no WEC. O triunfo contra Tyler Toner, nesta quinta-feira, no Colorado, foi por decisão unânime. Agora o lutador já está de olho no próximo desafio, provavelmente contra Mark Hominick, que esteve em ação no mesmo evento e venceu bem Leonard Garcia.

Confira a conversa com o GRACIEMAG.com:

O que achou da luta contra o Tyler Toner?

Tentei dar o melhor de mim e fiz tudo o que foi trabalhado pela equipe. Tínhamos em mente exatamente o que aconteceu. Vínhamos nos planejando, até porque o Toner é campeão mundial de chute boxe. Ele tem a mão muito dura, mas levamos bem em cima e por baixo. Acho que venci bem disparado, apesar de alguns juízes terem dado um dos rounds para ele.

Como segue o futuro no WEC depois dessa vitória?

Ontem mesmo já conversaram com o Joinha (Jorge Guimarães, empresário) e disseram que gostariam de me ver contra o Mark Hominick. Conheço um pouco dele e já chego no Brasil para estudá-lo mais. É um bom striker, com ótimo boxe. Ele se movimenta muito bem, tanto que o Leonard Garcia não conseguiu encontrá-lo no cage. Acho que é uma boa luta para melhorar ainda mais a minha situação no evento, já que ele vem de duas boas vitórias e está com o nome bem forte.

Para essa luta, você passou a treinar na Nova União. O que mudou?

Mudou tudo. Foi como se eu tivesse mergulhado em novas águas e saído renovado, purificado. Tudo o que aprendo lá ainda não havia treinado. É uma metodologia diferente de treino e, graças a Deus, me encaixei muito bem. Tenho que aprender muito ainda com a galera e é um prazer.

Como foi lutar na altitude do Colorado?

Fizemos o planejamento com o Dedé (André Pederneiras) e o Pedro “Cubano”, nosso treinador de wrestling. Eles fizeram a conta certinha de quanto tempo antes deveríamos chegar e nos acostumar. O ar é realmente mais seco e pesado, o pulmão sente mesmo. Nos primeiros treinos, cansávamos bastante. Mas ficamos mais de dez dias correndo e treinando e fez a diferença. É só comparar com outros lutadores na mesma noite. Muitos morreram no primeiro round e eu e o José Aldo lutamos muito bem. Consegui explodir bastante e me senti bem.

WEC 51 served up some fine fights high up in Colorado this Thursday. In the evening’s main event, José Aldo defended his featherweight title for a second time and showed yet again that he is the best in the world in his division. Another action-packed affair was the rematch between Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner, as was Miguel Torres’s return to winning form.

José Aldo vs Manny Gamburyan

In his second title defense, José Aldo was, literally, precision. The first round against Manny Gamburyan was one of study. Towards the end of the round, the Brazilian found the way to his opponent through leg kicks. But it was with a spot-on uppercut in the second round that the champion initiated the knockout – his seventh in the WEC –, causing Gamburyan to land on all fours, from where Aldo pummeled his opponent until Herb Dean intervened.

Donald Cerrone vs Jamie Varner

The rivalry that surfaced in 2009, when Jamie Varner won a controversial decision of Donald Cerrone, boiled over in the cage when the two met again. Cerrone had the upper hand over the three rounds, mixing punches with kicks and landing solid takedowns. Varner’s bleeding face clearly revealed the punishment he took. In the end, Cerrone rightfully took the unanimous decision win.

Miguel Torres vs Charlie Valenca

Former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres made his name by going seventeen fights without a loss. However, the Carlson Gracie pupil had lost in his last two appearances. After administering the first round well, Torres nearly knocked Valencia out in the final seconds. In the second, there was no escape for Valencia, when he was dropped and saw his opponent take his back and sink a rear-naked choke. Miguel Torres’s triumph came 2:25 min into round two.

George Roop vs Chan Sung Jung

Korea’s Chan Sung Jung had an evenly matched first round against George Roop. The fight seemed to be taking the same route in the second and Sung Jung had a positive moment in his striking. But it all came crashing down when Roop combined a series of strikes with a resounding left kick to the head that dropped his opponent to the ground unconscious.

Mark Hominick vs Leonard Garcia

Mark Hominick did well to vary his strikes, mixing up crosses, jabs and straights. A lot of these strikes found their mark on Leonard Garcia, who threw some good kicks, but most of his strikes didn’t connect. In the end, Hominick’s better physical conditioning was clear, but he still only earned a split decision.

In the preliminary fights, former featherweight champion Mike Brown found winning form again, against Cole Province. The win came via TKO just 1:18 min into the fight. Diego Nunes fought, too. Now training at Nova União, Nunes beat Tyler Toner by unanimous decision and notched the fifteenth win on his record, which counts only one loss.

“No primeiro round, fiquei apenas estudando para ver o que ele tinha programado para mim. Quando voltei, no segundo round, já sabia. Então foi só cumprir o trabalho que fizemos na academia”, comenta.

“Por mim, o meu reinado vai durar para sempre. Treino duro para chegar aqui e representar bem todos os companheiros que me ajudam”, finaliza o lutador.

Já o combate entre Donald Cerrone e Jamie Varner trouxe muita emoção ao público e, com justiça, faturou o prêmio de melhor luta da noite, equivalente a 10 mil dólares. A melhor finalização foi para Miguel Torres e o nocaute ficou com George Roop.

José Aldo x Manny Gamburyan

Na segunda defesa de cinturão, José Aldo teve, literalmente, precisão. O primeiro assalto contra Manny Gamburyan foi bem estudado. No final da parcial, o brasileiro achou o caminho contra o oponente através dos chutes. Mas foi com um soco certeiro que o atual campeão deu início ao nocaute, o sétimo no WEC. Depois de sofrer um upper, Gamburyan caiu de bruços. Aldo passou para as costas e socou até o árbitro Herb Dean intervir.

Com um jeito autêntico para conquistar o público, o campeão ainda fez uma espécie de dublagem enquanto o announcer gritava seu nome: ‘Josééé, Aldo, Juuuunioor!’ Está é a oitava vitória do lutador na organização.

Donald Cerrone x Jamie Varner

A rivalidade que vinha desde 2009, quando Jamie Varner venceu Donald Cerrone numa decisão polêmica, foi à tona dentro do cercado, quando os dois se reencontraram. Cerrone foi melhor nos três rounds, quando variou bem socos e chutes e aplicou boas quedas. Varner ficou com o rosto bem avariado, com bastante sangramento. Ao fim, os lutadores ainda se estranharam quando foram se cumprimentar, e o triunfo foi para o cowboy Cerrone, por decisão unânime.

Miguel Torres x Carlos Valencia

Ex-campeão do peso pluma, Miguel Torres fez o nome ao ficar 17 lutas sem perder. Entretanto, o pupilo de Carlson Gracie havia perdido nas duas últimas apresentações. Depois de administrar bem o primeiro round, Torres quase nocauteou Carlos Valencia nos últimos segundos. No segundo assalto, Valencia não teve escapatória. Caiu em konockdown, viu o oponente pegar as costas e acabou finalizado com um mata-leão. O triunfo de Miguel Torres foi aos 2min25s.

George Roop x Chan Sung Jung

O coreano Chan Sung Jung fez um primeiro round parelho contra George Roop. A luta vinha parecida na segunda parcial e Sung Jung teve bom momento na trocação. Mas tudo foi abaixo logo em seguida. Roop variou bem com uma sequência de socos e um forte chute lateral, de esquerda. Viu o adversário cair desacordado.

Mark Hominick x Leonard Garcia

Mark Hominick variou bem os socos na trocação, com cruzados, jabs e diretos. Muitos desses golpes passaram entre a guarda de Leonard Garcia, que aplicou bons chutes, mas a maioria dos socos no vazio. No round final, era nítido o melhor preparo físico de Hominick, que fez flexões de braço. Diante de tudo isso, o lutador até merecia a decisão unânime dos jurados, mas o triunfo foi em votos divididos.

Nas lutas preliminares, o ex-campeão de penas Mike Brown voltou a vencer contra Cole Province. A vitória veio por TKO, em apenas 1min18s de luta. Também lutou bem Diego Nunes. Agora treinando na Nova União, Nunes bateu Tyler Toner por decisão unânime e chegou à 15ª vitória no cartel, que conta com apenas uma derrota.

Manny Gamburyan is the challenger to José Aldo’s featherweight throne at tonight’s WEC show high above sea level in Colorado. Coming off a stunning knockout win over former champion Mike Brown, Gamburyan vows to rain on the Brazilian’s parade and return home with the divisional belt strapped to his waist.

“In my last fight I faced a former WEC champion, a great fighter. I put my game plan to practice and won. I’ll probably do the same thing against José Aldo. Anyone can be stopped. I feel he’s a great fighter and I respect him as champion, but I fight to destroy. It’s my time. I have to shine,” he forewarns.

Aldo comes into the title defense riding a ten-fight win streak, seven in the WEC, six by way of knockout. How can he be stopped?

“He probably has some holes in his game and I’m working on that. At the end of the day, we’re all human and the stronger won will win. I’m in great shape; I did the best preparations of my career. I’m ready to shock the world,” he announces.

Confident, Aldo wants his opponent to come after him. The champion knows what to watch out for.

“Manny needs to be aggressive because I’m going to be really aggressive, and it will be a great fight for the fans to watch. I have to watch out Manny’s wrestling, judo and heavy hand.”

Aldo’s preparations were carried out with attention to the slightest of details. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt and muay thai specialist was wary of the high altitude of Colorado.

“I’ve never fought at high altitude before, but I’m confident I’ll be fine. My training went great. I feel I did everything I needed to,” he says in closing.

Manny Gamburyan é o desafiante de José Aldo, esta noite, pelo cinturão do WEC. A luta, na altitude do Colorado, vai ser transmitida ao vivo pelo canal Combate, a partir das 22h. Vindo de surpreendente vitória sobre o ex-campeão Mike Brown, Gamburyan promete estragar a festa do brasileiro e voltar para casa com o cinturão afivelado.

“Na minha última luta, enfrentei um ex-campeão do WEC, um grande lutador. Botei meu jogo em prática e venci. Provavelmente, vou fazer a mesma coisa com José Aldo . Qualquer um pode ser parado. Eu acho que ele é um grande lutador e o respeito como campeão, mas eu luto para destruir. É o meu tempo, cara. Eu tenho que brilhar”, adianta.

Aldo vem numa série de dez combates sem derrota, sete deles no WEC, com seis nocautes. Como pará-lo?

“Ele provavelmente tem alguns buracos no jogo e nós estamos trabalhando nisso. No final do dia, somos todos humanos e quem é mais forte vai ser vitorioso. Estou em grande forma, fiz a melhor preparação de toda carreira. Estou pronto para chocar o mundo”, avisa.

Confiante, Aldo quer que o adversário venha mesmo para cima. O campeão sabe com o que deve se cuidar.

“Manny deve ser agressivo, porque eu vou entrar muito agressivo e vai ser uma grande luta para os fãs assistirem. Tenho que tomar cuidado com o wrestling, com o judô e com a mão pesada do Manny.”

A preparação foi feita nos mínimos detalhes. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu e muay thai se precaveu com a altitude do Colorado.

“Eu nunca lutei em altitudes elevadas, mas estou confiante de que vou me sentir bem. Meu treinamento foi ótimo. Sinto que fiz tudo o que tinha a fazer”, encerra.
