Muay thai sylist and Gracie Barra black belt Gustavo Ximu used both styles to good effect to beat Rick Reeves via split decision at War on the Mainland last Saturday in California.

“But I dominated the three rounds. I used my muay thai. There was a point where he managed to get me down, and I quickly latched on to his foot. He managed to get free and we went back to our feet. It was a good win,” says GRACIEMAG.com.

Over in the States Ximu had the backing of friends Renato Babalu and Fabricio Werdum, both fighters on the Strikeforce roster. Ximu has nothing but praise for how the event unfolded.

“It was really well organized, really cool. I think in November they may hold another installment and I may fight again.”

However, Ximu will see action before then. On September 11 in Niteroi, the city in the state of Rio de Janeiro where the fighter is from, he will do battle in the cage at the second installment of Fatality Arena.

“The event will feature a showdown between the teams of Thales Leites and Rafael Capoeira. I think I’ll be in the main event, an international bout. Now I’m going to take a couple of days of rest and then return to training,” he says in finishing.

Casca-grossa do muay thai e faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu da Gracie Barra, Gustavo Ximu usou muito bem as duas modalidades para bater Rick Reeves no War on the Mainland, evento que agitou a Califórnia no último sábado. O triunfo foi por decisão dividida dos juízes. 

“Mas dominei os três rounds. Usei muito o muay thai. Houve um momento que ele conseguiu me derrubar, e encaixei rapidamente o pé dele no chão. Ele conseguiu se desvencilhar e a luta voltou em pé. Foi uma boa vitória”, diz ao GRACIEMAG.com. 

Por lá, Ximu contou com a ajuda dos amigos Renato Babalu e Fabrício Werdum, atletas do Strikeforce. Sobre o evento, Ximu é só elogios.

“Foi muito bem organizado, muito bacana. Acho que em novembro pode acontecer mais uma edição e devo lutar novamente.” 

 Entretanto, Ximu deve entrar em ação antes disso. Acontece no dia 11 de setembro, em Niterói, cidade do lutador, a segunda edição do Fatality Arena. 

“O evento vai ter um desafio entre as equipes do Thales Leites e Rafael Capoeira. Acho que vou fazer a luta principal, um combate internacional. Vou descansar alguns dias e depois volto a treinar”, encerra.

The inaugural War on the Mainland event this Saturday in Irvine, California, featured a title fight right off the bat.

In the battle for the belt between former UFC fighter Thales Leites and former champion of the now-defunct IFL event Matt Horwich, the André Pederneiras student dominated the first three rounds and looked to be on his way to winning when the American turned things around in the fourth round when a standup exchange ended with Horwich taking the fight to the ground and quickly latching a rear-naked choke on the unwary Thales, who tapped out at the 44-second mark.

In a bout between ex-UFC fighters, Paul Buentello took on former champion Tim Sylvia in a great fight. The “Mainiac” showed his boxing and came up with the knockout with a second-round uppercut. Now the winner is tipped to face another former UFC fighter, Pedro Rizzo.

Jiu-Jitsu coach to Strikeforce beasts Cris and Evangelista Cyborg, Cleber Luciano imposed his slick ground game on Todd Willingham coming up with a rear-naked choke in the second round. Now Gustavo Ximu had his work cut out for him, but eked out a split decision win.

O War on the Mainland debutou em Irvine, Califórnia, Estados Unidos, na noite deste sábado, e teve disputa de cinturão. 

Nela, Thales Leites enfrentou o ex-campeão da extinta IFL Matt Horwich. Focado no duelo, o aluno de André Pederneiras dominou as três primeiras parciais e caminhava rumo à vitória, tendo chegado perto de definir. Mas, no início do quarto round o americano partiu para trocação, ainda respondida pelo brasileiro, que parecia cansado. Foi então quando o experiente Horwich conseguiu levar a luta para o chão e, com um ataque rápido, encaixou um mata-leão, surpreendendo Thales, que foi obrigado a bater aos 44 segundos.

Na luta entre os ex-lutadores do UFC, Paul Buentello tentou parar o ex-campeão do Ultimate Tim Sylvia. Numa grande luta, o “Maníaco” mostrou seu boxe e, com um upper, nocauteou no final da segunda etapa. Agora o próximo adversário da fera vai ser o também ex-UFC Pedro Rizzo.

Treinador de Jiu-Jitsu de feras como o casal Cris e Evangelista Cyborg, Cleber Luciano impôs seu chão afiadíssimo e finalizou Todd Willingham com um mata-leão, no segundo round. Já Gustavo Ximú teve uma luta complicada, mas acabou vencendo Rick Reeves na decisão dividida dos juízes.

Thales Leites entra em ação num novo evento americano, o War on the Mainland. O faixa-preta já estreia numa disputa pelo cinturão peso médio no dia 14 de agosto. Além de Thales, também lutam pelo título Tim Sylvia e Paul Buentello (pesado) e Allan Goes contra Jason Lambert (meio-pesado), num card repleto de nomes conhecidos do público.   

“É um evento novo nos Estados Unidos que traz um card muito bom, com o Joe Moreira casando as lutas. Espero que dê certo e permaneça no calendário do MMA mundial. Fiquei muito feliz por ter sido convidado. Iria lutar contra o Falaniko Vitale, mas, ontem, trocaram o adversário. Vai ser o Matt Horwich pelo cinturão. A luta vai passar no pay-per-view e estou honrado pela oportunidade”, diz Thales ao GRACIEMAG.com.

O adversário, Matt Horwich, conta com 19 vitórias por finalização, o que pode trazer bom combate no solo, já que esta também é a maior especialidade de Thales.

“Sei que é um cara bem duro, que vai para cima o tempo todo. Essa é uma das maiores qualidades dele, ele não para, e acho que isso é muito bom para a luta e para mim. Lutamos na mesma noite no UFC 90, foi quando o conheci. Ele tem um jogo meio diferente, mas é eficiente. Um cara não teria tantas finalizações se não fosse bom, além de ter sido campeão na IFL. Se a luta for no chão, estou pronto, mas se for em pé também estou preparado.”

Para estar pronto, Thales conta com a ajuda de uma turma de “loucos”.

“Tenho treinado na Delfim numa parceria que chamamos de ‘Los Locos’. Treinamos eu, Pedro Rizzo, Vitor Miranda, Glover Teixeira e mais uma galera. Desde que começamos a treinar juntos, ninguém perdeu, então está sendo muito bacana. Também vou à Nova União para o André Pederneiras, que é o meu treinador, me acompanhar e faço um trabalho em Niterói com o Welton Ribeiro e o Josuel Distak. Estamos sempre nos ajudando. Este conjunto faz eu me sentir melhor e mais maduro”, encerra.

Thales Leites will see action at a new promotion to crop up in the United States, War on the Mainland. The black belt will make his promotional debut August 14 with a title fight right of the bat. Besides Thales’s, two more title fights are on the card boasting a number of big names: Tim Sylvia versus Paul Buentello for the heavyweight belt, and Allan Goes against Jason Lambert for the light heavyweight belt.

“It’s a new event in the United States offering up a really great card, with Joe Silva doing the matchmaking. I hope everything works out and it stays on the world MMA calendar. I was really happy to have been invited. I was going to fight Falaniko Vitale but they switched opponents on me yesterday. Now I’ll be facing Matt Horwich for the belt. The fight will be broadcast on pay-per-view and I’m honored for being given the opportunity,” Thales tells GRACIEMAG.com.

His opponent, Matt Horwich, holds a record of 19 submission wins, which could mean sparks flying should the fight hit the ground, since that is Thales’s specialty too.

“I know he’s a really tough guy who is on the attack the whole time. That’s one of his greatest qualities, he doesn’t stop and I feel that’s great for the fight and for me. We fought on the same night at UFC 90, that’s when I met him. His game is kind of different, but it’s efficient. The guy wouldn’t have so many submission wins if he weren’t good, nor would he have been IFL champion. If the fight hits the ground, I’m ready, but I’m ready if it stays on the feet too.”

In preparing for the fight, Thales counts on the help of a band of “nutcases.”

“I’ve been training at Delfim academy in a partnership we call ‘Los Locos.’ I, Pedro Rizzo, Vitor Miranda, Glover Teixeira and a bunch of other guys are training together. No one has lost since we started training together, so it’s been really cool. I also go to Nova União for André Pederneiras, who is my trainer and keeps up with what I’m doing, and I also workout in Niterói with Welton Ribeiro and Josuel Distak. We’re always helping each other out. This setup has me feeling a lot better and more mature,” he says in closing.
