According to its promoters, the South American Championship that heated up the Southern Brazilian city of Florianopolis last weekend was the best one yet.

And one of the black belt standouts who helped make it so great was Guto Campos, who won the medium heavyweight division, and took bronze in the absolute after getting caught in a forearm choke from mount by Leo Nogueira in the semifinals. After the dust had settled, he spoke with GRACIEMAG.com about the highs and lows from the contest.

“I was doing really well in the absolute. I’d come up with two submissions–an armbar and a choke from the back–and managed to impose the pace. I came up against Leo Nogueira in the semifinal and knew it would be a tough match. I went in confident and had faith I could win it; but props to him for winning, having imposed his game and neutralized mine,” recalled Guto.

“The good part was that I learned a lesson that ended up helping me win at weight: believe in your game and have faith in your instinct! I managed to fight really well at medium heavyweight, tapping out Rodrigo Pimpolho in the final. I started by attacking from half-guard, managed to sink a Kimura, but from there he managed to sweep me. So I landed on bottom with the Kimura in place, managed the reversal and then finished up with the same Kimura lock from side-control,” he recounted.

“The championship was proof that there’s no such thing as an easy fight. I wasn’t even going to compete. I hadn’t been training much and had just arrived from Australia, where I spent a month teaching seminars. But my students encouraged me and didn’t let me go only as a coach. I’m thankful to them for the confidence they had in me, as well as to my sponsors Keiko Sports, Vita Juice, Flex Nutrition and my physiotherapist Felipe Guariglia,” he said.

Now his attention is turned to the Copa Podio Heavyweight GP coming up January 13 in Rio de Janeiro, where he’ll be doing a supermatch with GFTeam’s Wancler Oliveira. “I’m already training here at Guetho academy for the match. My brother Guilherme Campos is teaching class for me so I can focus only on training and be at my best when the time comes. I know Wancler. I’ve already seen some of his matches,” said Guto in closing.

No último fim de semana, a chapa esquentou em Florianópolis, com um Campeonato Sul-Americano que, segundo os próprios organizadores, foi o melhor até hoje. O dojô do Centro Multiuso de São José foi o palco do show.

Um dos destaques foi o faixa-preta Guto Campos, ouro no meio-pesado e bronze no absoluto, ao parar no superpesado Léo Nogueira, que o pegou no ezequiel da montada. Ele comentou com o GRACIEMAG.com seus momentos bons e ruins na disputa.

“Estava indo muito bem no absoluto. Vinha de duas finalizações – uma no armlock e a outra com um estrangulamento nas costas – e consegui impor meu ritmo. Acabei enfrentando o Léo Nogueira na semifinal, e sabia que seria uma luta dura. Entrei confiante e sempre acreditando na vitória, mas a vitória foi mérito dele, que conseguiu impor o jogo e anular o meu para sair vencedor”, lembra Guto.

“O bom foi que desse combate tirei uma grande lição para vencer na categoria: acredite no seu jogo e confie no seu instinto! Consegui lutar muito bem no meio-pesado, fiz a final contra Rodrigo Pimpolho e consegui finalizar. Comecei atacando da meia-guarda, consegui encaixar a kimura, mas nisso ele conseguiu me raspar. Caí por baixo então com a kimura encaixada, consegui fazer a inversão e então finalizar no cem-quilos, na mesma chave kimura”, diz o gaúcho.

“Foi um campeonato que provou que não existe mais luta fácil. Nem ia lutar, não estava treinando muito e tinha acabado de chegar da Austrália, onde passei um mês dando seminários. Mas meus alunos me incentivaram e não me deixaram ir apenas como técnico. Agradeço muito a eles pela confiança, e aos meu patrocinadores Keiko Sports, Vita Juice, Flex Nutrion e ao fisioterapeuta Felipe Guariglia”, comenta o professor.

Agora a mente já está ligada no GP dos Pesados da Copa Pódio, no Rio, dia 13 de janeiro, em que Guto faz a superluta com Wancler Oliveira da GFTeam. “Já estou me preparando para a luta aqui na academia Guetho. Meu irmão Guilherme Campos está no comando dos treinos, para que eu possa me focar apenas no treinamento e chegar lá pronto para fazer o meu melhor. Conheço o Wancler, já vi algumas lutas dele ”, conclui a fera.

Last Saturday in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, the draw for the group stage of the Copa Pódio Heavyweight GP was held. The Yellow Group is composed of UFC fighter Caio Magalhães, Rodolfo Vieira, Xande Ribeiro, Léo Nogueira and Alex Ceconi. Now, the Green Group is made up of Alexandre Souza, Antonio Braga Neto, Bruno Bastos, João Gabriel Rocha and Lucio Lagarto.

Yesterday the promoters put the finishing touches on the timetable for the January 13 event with Rio de Janeiro’s Clube Hebraica as a venue.

“It’s important that we announce the groups and match order beforehand so the fighters can study their opponents’ games and put together their strategies for the competitions,” explained Jeferson Maycá, the promoter of the event.

In the opening stage, all the competitors in each group will face off against each other–four points will be awarded for each submission, three for a points win, and one point for a draw. At the end of the opening phase, the two top-scoring athletes from each group will go through to the semifinals–the criteria for tie-breaks are, in the following order: match result, number of submission wins, sum of points scored in all matches (points for–points against).

Right off the bat in the opening phase, Alexandre Souza takes on Lucio Lagarto, Braga Neto faces Bruno Bastos, Caio Magalhães gets Léo Nogueira, and Rodolfo Vieira squares off with Alexandre Ceconi. A Copa Pódio sorteou no sábado, em Floripa, os grupos do GP dos Pesados. O grupo amarelo traz o lutador do UFC Caio Magalhães, Rodolfo Vieira, Xande Ribeiro, Léo Nogueira e Alex Ceconi. Já o grupo verde vem com Alexandre Souza, Antonio Braga Neto, Bruno Bastos, João Gabriel Rocha e Lucio Lagarto.

A organização hoje fechou o cronograma do evento marcado para 13 de janeiro, no Clube Hebraica, no Rio.

“A definição dos grupos e a divulgação da ordem das lutas com antecedência é importante para que os atletas possam estudar o jogo dos seus adversários, e montar as suas estratégias para a competição”, explica Jeferson Maycá, diretor do evento.

Na primeira fase, todos lutam contra todos dentro do seu grupo – são quatro pontos por cada vitória por finalização, três pontos por cada vitória normal e um ponto a cada empate. No fim da primeira fase, os dois atletas de cada grupo que somarem mais pontos estão classificados para as semifinais – os critérios de desempate são, pela ordem: resultado do confronto direto, número de vitórias por finalização, saldo de pontos obtidos em todas as lutas (pontos pro – pontos contra).

A Brazilian National Championship-winning black belt, Raphael Abi-Rihan had did something he never had before last Saturday at the Copa Pódio pre-event held at Delfim academy in Tijuca.

Already scheduled to take part in one of the supermatches on the coming 21st, the Carlson Gracie-team black belt was invited to be a commentator for the two supermatches that took place during the Middleweight GP draw. In the green team: current absolute champion of Brazil Nivaldo Oliveira, Victor Bomfim, Davi Ramos, André Bastos and Vinicius Marinho. In the yellow, three world champions, Otávio Sousa, Leandro Lo and brown belt Felipe “Preguiça”, join Rafael Formiga and Dimitrius Souza. The athletes from each group compete against each other to go through to the semifinals.

Abi-Rihan received praise across the board. “Friends of mine who’d never heard about Jiu-Jitsu called to say that they understood everything that was going on in the fights. Abi-Rihan was very simple and didactic, and interesting to those already familiar with the art,” said Jeferson Maycá, the organizer of the event, in praise.

Abi-Rihan, who will be facing Guto Campos in a supermatch on the 21st in Rio, told GRACIEMAG.com what he learned from the experience.

Copa Pódio’s promoters were so positive, they want to renew with you. What are your thoughts about this “new role” of yours in Jiu-Jitsu?

I felt great commentating alongside Marco de Vargas and was pleased with the feedback I got from everybody, first there on the day and then over the internet. I felt really at home in the situation. The cool part was how happy my parents were, because they’re journalists and were proud. I felt something different in that situation. It’s like I could offer something to a large amount of people at the same time. I got to inform people on a subject and didn’t need to study to do it, and it wasn’t laborious or tense because I did it for the pleasure of it. Jiu-Jitsu is in my blood. As for the assessment of my performance, I’ll leave that to my old man (laughs).

Does watching Jiu-Jitsu from the outside, with the aim of explaining it as it happens, help you study it?

For sure. I grew a lot through this Jiu-Jitsu-related experience. I also felt more involved with the sport, which is my profession and philosophy of life. I made it clear to the event promoter, Jeferson, that my thing is fighting; however, whenever I’m not fighting and there’s room at the table, it will be a pleasure to take on the mission again.

How is training to face Guto Campos in the supermatch going?

I’m already back to training. After all, on July 21 I’ll be in a serious war and there won’t be any way to “cut the audio” if I make some mistake. I’m happily back at training. It’s a pleasure to compete at an event that’s revolutionizing Jiu-Jitsu competitions through its innovative format. What made me all the more pleased was being picked to face Guto Campos with 4,600 votes on Facebook, ahead of World Championship-winning fighters. It’s an honor and tremendous prestige for me.

Campeão brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu, o faixa-preta carioca Raphael Abi-Rihan viveu uma experiência inédita no último sábado, no pré-evento da Copa Pódio, na academia Delfim, na Tijuca.

Já escalado para a superluta no evento do dia 21, o faixa-preta formado pelo time Carlson Gracie foi convidado na última hora para assumir o posto de comentarista das duas lutas que rolaram durante o sorteio dos grupos do GP dos Médios. No grupo verde, ficaram o atual campeão brasileiro absoluto Nivaldo Oliveira, Victor Bomfim, Davi Ramos, André Bastos e Vinicius Marinho. No grupo amarelo, três campeões mundiais: Otavio Sousa, Leandro Lo e o marrom Felipe “Preguiça” Pena estão no bolo com Rafael Formiga e Dimitrius Souza. Os atletas de cada grupo lutam entre si e os melhores avançam para as semifinais.

Abi-Rihan foi bastante elogiado por todos. “Amigos meus que nunca tinham ouvido falar de Jiu-Jitsu ligaram para dizer que estavam entendendo tudo das lutas. O Abi-Rihan foi muito simples e didático, e interessante para quem já conhece a arte”, elogiou Jeferson Maycá, o organizador do evento.

Abi-Rihan, que faz a superluta com Guto Campos no próximo dia 21, no Rio, contou ao GRACIEMAG.com o que aprendeu.

A organização da Copa Pódio gostou tanto que já quer renovar com você. Como avalia sua “nova função” no Jiu-Jitsu?

Me senti muito bem nessa função ao lado do profissional Marco de Vargas e fiquei satisfeito com o feedback da galera, primeiro lá no dia e depois pela internet. Me senti muito à vontade nessa situação. O mais legal foi a satisfação dos meus pais, que são jornalistas e ficaram orgulhosos. Senti algo diferente naquela missão. É como se eu pudesse oferecer algo para uma quantidade grande de pessoas ao mesmo tempo. Pude dar informações sobre um assunto que não foi preciso estudo para narrar, e não foi trabalhoso nem tenso, porque fiz por prazer. O Jiu-Jitsu está no sangue. Quanto à avaliação sobre minha atuação, deixei com o meu “coroa” (risos).

Ver o Jiu-Jitsu de fora, com o objetivo de explicar na hora, ajuda o estudo?

Sem dúvida. Eu cresci bastante com mais essa experiência relacionada ao Jiu-Jitsu. Até me senti ainda mais envolvido com o esporte, que é a minha profissão e minha filosofia de vida. Deixei claro para o promotor do evento, o Jeferson, que o meu negócio é lutar; porém, quando não estiver lutando e sobrar um lugar na mesa, será um prazer encarar novamente essa missão.

Como estão os treinos para enfrentar Guto Campos na superluta?

Já estou de volta à realidade dos treinamentos, afinal no dia 21 de julho a guerra será árdua e não haverá possibilidade de “cortar o áudio” caso eu cometa algum erro. Estou na realidade treinando bem feliz. É o prazer por lutar num evento que tem de tudo pra revolucionar as competições de Jiu-Jitsu, pelo seu formato inovador. O que me deixou ainda mais contente foi ter sido eleito para enfrentar Guto Campos com 4.600 votos do pessoal no Facebook, na frente de atletas campeões mundiais. Isso é uma honra e um enorme prestígio pra mim.

Neste sábado, 30 de junho, a organização da Copa Pódio de Jiu-Jitsu promove o sorteio que define os confrontos da primeira fase do GP dos Médios, no Rio de Janeiro. Os pegas serão determinados na sorte, em cerimônia chique na Academia Delfim, na Tijuca.

Além dos integrantes do GP, vão estar presentes os protagonistas das duas superlutas: Cláudio Caloquinha, Michael Langhi, Guto Campos e Raphael Abi-Rihan. Estes dois últimos vão prestar uma atenção especial para o combate entre Wancler Oliveira e Tarsis Humphreys, que será realizado logo depois do sorteio e decidirá o desafiante da superluta do GP dos Pesados, em dezembro.

Haverá ainda outra superluta, entre Diogo Almeida e Victor Bonfim, para apontar o dono da última vaga para o GP dos Médios.

O sorteio dividirá os dez atletas aleatoriamente em dois grupos, o verde e o amarelo. Na primeira fase da competição, todos lutam contra todos dentro do mesmo grupo, em combates de seis minutos. Vitórias conferem três (3) pontos e empates um (1) ponto aos atletas. Ao fim da última rodada, classificam-se para as semifinais os dois atletas de cada grupo com maior saldo de pontos.

Os critérios de desempate, em ordem de prioridade, são: 1) Resultado do confronto direto; 2) Número de finalizações; 3) Saldo obtido em todas as lutas (pontos pró e pontos contra) 4) E, em última instância, uma nova luta entre os atletas empatados.

A partir das semifinais, as lutas terão a duração de dez (10) minutos, sendo que nos cinco minutos iniciais só vale a finalização. No restante, o  critério é o tradicional de pontos da IBJJF.

This Saturday, June 30, in Rio de Janeiro, the promoters of the Copa Pódio Jiu-Jitsu tournament will be holding the draw to determine the matchups for the opening phase of the Middleweight GP. The matchmaking will be done by random pick at a swanky ceremony at Academia Delfim, in the Tijuca borough of the city.

Besides the competitors in the GP, the stars of the two supermatches will be there: Cláudio Caloquinha, Michael Langhi, Guto Campos and Raphael Abi-Rihan. The latter two will be paying close attention to the match between Wancler Oliveira and Tarsis Humphreys that will take place just after the draw and will determine the challenger in the December Heavyweight GP supermatch.

There will also be a second supermatch, between Diogo Almeida and Victor Bonfim, to determine who gets the final berth in the Middleweight GP.

The draw will divide up the ten athletes into two groups—the green and the yellow. Over the opening stage of the competition, every competitor in each group will face off against each other in six-minute bouts. A win yields three (3) points, while a draw nets one (1) point to each athlete. Following the final round of the phase, the two athletes with the highest point count move on to the semifinals.

The criteria for tie-breaking, in order of priority, are: 1) Direct match result; 2) Number of finishes; 3) Overall balance (points scored / points scored against); 4) And as a last resort, an extra, tie-breaking match.

Starting with the semifinals the match duration will be ten (10) minutes, with only submissions counting during the first five, after which traditional IBJJF point-scoring criteria will apply.

Rio de Janeiro native Raphael Abi-Rihan (Carlson Gracie) is now slated to face Guto Campos in the supermatch at the July Copa Pódio Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Having tallied up the votes on from followers of the event’s Facebook page, the organizers have officially announced Guto’s opponent for the December supermatch.

Causing a major stir among fans, the difference in votes between Abi and second-placed Wancler Oliveira (GFTeam) was greater than 10%. Being such, no eliminator match will be needed to determine who will be opposite Campos in the match area.

Sergipe State native Wancler Oliveira’s public appeal will be compensated by the event, however, as the he and third-placed André Bastos of Nova União are being matched against each other. The winner of the match will be the challenger in the next event, facing the winner of the Campos-Abi-Rihan showdown. Wancler’s match will be held in June at the official launch ceremony where the Middleweight GP brackets draw will take place.

Guto Campos’s challenger now determined, the organizers now turn their attention to writing up the GP card that already has Lightweight GP winner Leandro Lo among the participants.

O carioca Raphael Abi-Rihan (Carlson Gracie) será o adversário de Guto Campos no Super Desafio da Copa Pódio de Jiu-Jitsu, em julho, no Rio de Janeiro. Após encerrar a apuração dos votos válidos (via seguidores da página do evento no Facebook), a organização oficializou o resultado da votação que escolheu o oponente de Guto, campeão da superluta em dezembro.

Com grande mobilização dos fãs, a diferença dos votos válidos entre Abi e o segundo colocado, Wancler Oliveira (GFTeam), ultrapassou os 10%. Dessa forma, foi descartada a hipótese de uma luta entre ambos para a decisão da vaga na superluta, espécie de “segundo turno” idealizada pela organização.

O desempenho do sergipano Wancler Oliveira, no entanto, será recompensado pelo evento, que acaba de acertar a luta entre ele e o terceiro colocado, André Bastos (Nova União). O vencedor desse confere será o desafiante do próximo evento, e vai lutar com o vencedor de Guto vs Abi-Rihan. A luta de Wancler vai ocorrer no mês de junho, por ocasião do lançamento oficial e do sorteio dos grupos do GP dos Médios.

Definido o desafiante de Guto Campos, a organização foca a sua atenção para a formação do card do GP que já tem Leandro Lo, o campeão dos pesos leves que sobe de categoria para buscar mais um título inédito em sua carreira.
