Faixa-preta do professor Zé Radiola (GB Pernambuco), o campeão mundial Otavio Sousa vive uma situação curiosa. Mesmo sendo o melhor do mundo no peso médio, não é o franco favorito ao ouro no Pan 2013, dos dias 20 a 24 de março, em Irvine, na Califórnia.

O motivo? A quantidade quase inacreditável de pedreiras que acabaram caindo na divisão da fera, este ano – nomes como Leandro Lo, Kayron Gracie, DJ Jackson, Clark Gracie, Rafael Formiga, Vitor Henrique, Lucas Rocha, Marcelo Mafra etc etc…

O pernambucano bateu um papo com o GracieMag.com e revelou seus planos para vencer, apesar dos obstáculos de respeito.

GracieMag: Como estão os treinos no QG da Gracie Barra, com tantos amigos reunidos?

OTAVIO SOUSA: Estão perfeitos, agora é segurar a vontade de lutar logo. Meu professor Zé Radiola, meus amigos e parceiros de treino de Recife estão quase todos aqui comigo na Califórnia. Com isso estou corrigindo falhas todos os dias, e o pessoal me dando aquela força. Já estou treinando forte há um bom tempo e agora ficou 100%. Queria agradecer a todos que fizeram parte do meu treinamento, toda galera que treina na academia do Rômulo Barral, meus alunos da GB Headquarters, enfim todo o pessoal da Gracie Barra.

Qual o plano para colocar novamente a medalha dourada no pescoço?

Como sempre a categoria médio é sempre uma das mais disputadas, cheias de grandes nomes e ainda com atletas duros chegando da marrom. Definitivamente só vai ter lutão, e vou dar meu máximo. Agora estou com meu jogo bastante afiado, bem justo e me vejo mais maduro também. A cabeça está bem melhor do que há tempos atrás, e me sinto mais confiante.

Como funciona este seu aspecto mental na hora da competição, Otavio?

Na minha forma de ver Jiu-Jitsu, a cabeça é tudo na hora da luta. Se você estiver bem de cabeça no dia do campeonato, e tiver feito o dever de casa direitinho todos os dias, a chance de você se dar bem é grande. Então acho que tenho essas armas para me sagrar campeão neste Pan. O dever de casa foi feito e a cabeça esta ótima.

Você aprendeu muito com as derrotas para o Kron (Metamoris) e para seu companheiro Rominho (IBJJF Pro League), no fim da última temporada?

Toda derrota só faz deixar o atleta ainda mais forte, pelo menos no meu caso, pois odeio perder. Quando isso ocorre eu começo a treinar mais forte que nunca, para não perder de novo. Sem dúvida eles são dois grandes atletas, tanto Rominho quanto Kron, ambos são muito duros. Essas lutas só me fizeram ainda mais forte para a temporada 2013.

O Boston Open ocorreu nesse fim de semana no UMASS Athletics, nos EUA. Entre as escolas participantes a Kimura foi a grande campeã, com o time de Lloyd Irvin no segundo lugar.

Na faixa-preta, Rafael Formiga (Soul Fighters) levou o ouro absoluto e o bronze no peso médio, categoria vencida por Vitor Henrique (GFTeam). Veja algumas fotos do evento a seguir.

Otavio Sousa is becoming something of a boogeyman at IBJJF Open tournaments. Keeping an enviable competition pace, last Saturday the Jiu-Jitsu black belt who teaches at Gracie Barra America snapped up his third middleweight and absolute gold medals of the season.

“My performance in Chicago was good; I’m really pleased with my 2012 campaign so far. The Chicago Summer Open was the third IBJJF tournament I won gold at weight and open weight of the season—the other two were at the Spring Open at the Jiu-Jitsu Expo and the New York Open. Not to mention the biggest title of my career, which came at the 2012 Worlds in Long Beach,” he remembered when interviewed by GRACIEMAG.com.

The most impressive thing about Otavio is his consistency, seeing as he made a July trip to Brazil to compete at Copa Pódio. “I feel that keeping this rhythm has been vital to my career. I didn’t let up after the Worlds. I’m keeping up the pace, keeping in good condition both technically and physically. I don’t plan on slowing down any time soon (laughs),” said the native of Pernambuco state, before breaking down how his matches at the tournament went.

“The divisional final at the Chicago Open was against Vitor Henrique, who is a really tough fighter from GFTeam. In the absolute, before making it to the final I had to get past a really tough athlete from Alliance, Gabriel Goulart, who I beat on points,” said the Zé Radiola student.

“I had a total of four matches at the event and won two by submission. The first was by armbar from the mount, where I managed to sit on my opponent’s midsection and cross one of his arms over without giving him chance for escape. The second submission of the day was against a student of Rodrigo Comprido’s, Scott Hudson, who was in the medium heavyweight final against Gabriel Goulart. I managed to pass his guard, take his back and finish him with a choke using both sides of the collar,” he explained.

“I’m really pleased with my results, and thank God doors are opening and opportunities arising for me. My plans now are to head to Japan to teach seminars and take part in Jiu-Jitsu events. I also have some supermatches scheduled for October and the end of the year. Otavio Sousa está virando o bicho-papão dos eventos Open da IBJJF. Num ritmo de competições invejável, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu que ensina na Gracie Barra América faturou pela terceira vez nessa temporada as medalhas de ouro no peso médio e no absoluto, no último sábado.

“Meu desempenho foi muito bom em Chicago, estou muito feliz com a campanha que venho fazendo em 2012. O Chicago Summer Open foi o terceiro campeonato da IBJJF em que conquistei o peso e o absoluto – os outros dois foram o Spring Open durante a Jiu-Jitsu Expo e o New York Open. Isso sem contar com o título mais importante da minha carreira, que foi o título mundial em 2012 em Long Beach”, lembrou ele, em papo com o GRACIEMAG.com.

O que mais impressiona em Otavio é a consistência, já que ele ainda veio ao Brasil em julho, para lutar a Copa Pódio. “Acho que este ritmo tem sido fundamental na minha carreira, eu não dei trégua depois do Mundial. Estou mantendo o ritmo, me mantendo bem condicionado tecnicamente e fisicamente, e olha, não pretendo relaxar tão cedo (risos)”, contou o pernambucano, que lembrou dos conferes no torneio.

“A final da categoria do Chicago Open foi contra o Vítor Henrique, que por sinal é um atleta muito duro da GFTeam. No absoluto, antes de chegar à final, passei por outro atleta duríssimo da Alliance, o Gabriel Goulart, que venci por pontos”, listou o pupilo de Zé Radiola.

“Fiz um total de quatro lutas no evento e duas venci por finalização. A primeira foi com um armlock da montada, onde consegui sentar no meio do meu adversário e cruzar seus braços sem dar chance para que ele pudesse escapar. A segunda finalização do dia foi contra um aluno do Rodrigo Comprido, o Scott Huston, que tinha feito a final do meio-pesado com o Gabriel Goulart. Consegui passar a guarda dele, pegar as costas e finalizar dali com um estrangulamento segurando as duas golas”, detalhou o lutador.

“Estou muito feliz com meus resultados e graças a Deus, as portas estão se abrindo e oportunidades surgindo. Meus próximos planos serão minha ida ao Japão para ministrar seminários e participar de uns eventos de Jiu-Jitsu. Também tenho umas lutas casadas previstas para outubro e para o fim do ano. With a twofold victory over GFTeam middleweight Vitor Henrique, Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu professor Otavio Sousa snapped up another two gold medals for his extensive collection.

Otavio won both the middleweight and open weight divisions at the Chicago Summer International Open, an IBJJF-sanctioned event held this Saturday at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park, Illinois.

The fact the competition reached maximum capacity is testament to how much the sport is growing in the region, and a number of other standouts surfaced there.

Alliance athlete Gabriel Goulart won the medium heavyweight division and took bronze in the absolute. From the GB competition team, Bruno Amorim took the other absolute bronze and silver at lightweight, with Philipe “Furão” taking first.

In the master black belt division, Rodrigo Comprido returned to competition after the Worlds and closed out with his student Jonatas Novaes (Brasa Warrior), who went home with the gold.

At brown belt, the absolute title went to Thomas McMahon, with his Ecuadorian colleague Francisco Iturralde in second.

Com uma dupla vitória sobre o peso médio Vitor Henrique, atleta da GFTeam, o professor da Gracie Barra Otavio Sousa faturou mais duas medalhas de ouro para sua ampla coleção.

Otavio foi o campeão dos médios e do aberto do Chicago Summer International Open, realizado nesse sábado no Odeum Expo Center de Villa Park, em Illinois.

O torneio da IBJJF, que atingiu sua capacidade máxima de atletas confirmando o crescimento do esporte na região, viu ainda outros destaques.

O atleta da Alliance Gabriel Goulart venceu o meio-pesado e beliscou o bronze no absoluto. Da GB, Bruno Amorim ficou com o bronze absoluto e a prata no peso leve, com Philipe “Furão” em primeiro.

Na faixa-preta master, Rodrigo Comprido voltou após lutar o Mundial e fechou com o aluno Jonatas Novaes (Brasa Warrior), que levou o ouro.

Na faixa-marrom, o título absoluto foi de Thomas McMahon, com o colega equatoriano Francisco Iturralde em segundo.

But Vitor Henrique is from a land of burly fighters himself—the same terrain once settled by the likes of Carlos and Helio Gracie. The Jiu-Jitsu stylist from Teresópolis had a chat with GRACIEMAG.com after his conquest last Sunday, and shared some cheer-filled lessons with us. And when it came time to thank his sponsors, he made sure to mention Uncle Paulo Américo “Paleco”, of course.

After conquering the middleweight title by overcoming Marcos Torregrossa in the final and the absolute by unseating Samir Chantre, the 25-year-old turned a critical eye on his own performance.

“I performed at 90%. I managed to get my game working for me both on top and on bottom but I still need to make some adjustments for the 2012 Pan, coming up at the end of March and in early April,” he told GRACIEMAG.com. Check out some of the highlights from the conversation:

What did you learn on your way to winning two gold medals at the San Francisco Open?

I always learn a lot, but this Sunday I came up with some details on how to defend certain sweeps. The trickiest moment I encountered at the tournament was in the final at weight, against Marcos Torregrossa, whose guard is really complicated to pass. I started out with a sweep, then he swept me back, and soon we were back on our feet. I got the takedown, and he swept me again but I managed to get closed guard. When he tried opening my guard standing, I swept him again.

What’s your main pointer for the hours leading up to a competition?

Fighters have to always be well fed, sleep early before the event, try to stay focused and avoid eating too much before competing. It’s good to be confident in your game; that will help when you run into rough spots over the course of the tournament.

JIU-JITSU 3 TIMES A DAY

What was your training like for the conquest?

I’m training Jiu-Jitsu three times a day. In the morning I do a laid back session; in the afternoon I do specific training, with positions; while at night I roll some with my friends JC Ramey, Luke Zachrich, Emilly Hammer… Physical conditioning is here in Columbus, Ohio, with my personal trainer Cory Milton.

What’s your favorite technique? What do you feel made the difference in your winning the absolute?

I really like using the morote seoi nage for takedowns. But what made the difference was my state of mind: keeping calm, controlling the gas and timing positions right and with confidence.

You don’t live in Teresópolis anymore, right?

Right. I moved to Rio in 2009. Up until then I trained under Master Adilson Bitta, who trained me up until black belt. In early 2009, I joined the GFTeam family, led by Master Julio Cesar. Thank God everything is going fine; I managed to get good sponsors and compete at major events in the USA.

Was your move to GFTeam a smooth one?

It was funny. There was a championship in Teresópolis and the gang from GFTeam went to compete. I ended up competing against Marcio Tubarão and was in the final against Denilson Pimenta, who are brothers to me now. As soon as the final was over I shamelessly went and asked to join GFTeam!

Mas Vitor Henrique também vem de uma localidade de cascas-grossas, onde os próprios grandes mestres Carlos e Helio Gracie habitaram. Após conquistar o peso médio, ao superar na final Marcos Torregrossa, e o absoluto, ao bater Samir Chantre, o lutador de 25 anos analisou seu desempenho com autocrítica.

“O desempenho foi 90% de aproveitamento. Consegui desenvolver bem meu jogo tanto por cima quanto por baixo, mas ainda preciso fazer alguns ajustes para o Pan 2012, no fim de março e comecinho de abril“, contou a fera ao GRACIEMAG.com. Confira os melhores momentos do papo a seguir.

O que você aprendeu nessa trajetória rumo aos dois ouros no San Francisco Open de Jiu-Jitsu?

Sempre aprendo muito, mas nesse domingo tirei como lição alguns detalhes de como defender algumas raspagens. O momento mais complicado no campeonato foi a final da categoria, contra Marcos Torregrossa, que tem uma guarda bem complicada de passar. Eu comecei com uma raspada, ele me raspou, e logo depois a luta voltou em pé. Quedei, ele me raspou de novo mas logo consegui fechar a guarda. Quando ele tentou abrir a guarda em pé, eu raspei novamente.

Qual o macete principal para as horas anteriores às competições?

O lutador tem de manter sempre uma boa alimentação, dormir cedo antes do evento, procurar estar concentrado e evitar comer muito antes de lutar. É útil ter muita confiança em seu jogo, isso vai ajudar nas horas complicadas ao longo do torneio.

Jiu-Jitsu 3 vezes por dia

Como foram seus treinos para a conquista?

Estou treinando Jiu-Jitsu três vezes por dia. Na parte da manhã, faço treino solto, de tarde o treino é específico, com posição, enquanto à noite faço uns rolas com os amigos JC Ramey, Luke Zachrich, Emilly Hammer… A preparação física é aqui em Columbus, Ohio, com meu personal Cory Milton.

Qual é a sua técnica favorita? O que você acha que fez a diferença nessa sua conquista no absoluto?

Gosto muito de quedar com o morote seoi nage. Mas o que fez a diferença foi a cabeça. Manter a calma, controlar o gás e aplicar as posições na hora certa e com confiança.

Você não está mais em Teresópolis, certo?

Sim, eu tive uma transição em 2009, quando saí de Teresópolis para estudar no Rio. Até então eu treinava com o mestrão Adilson Bitta, que me treinou até a faixa-preta. No início de 2009, entrei para a família GFTeam, que é liderada pelo mestre Julio Cesar. Graças a Deus está indo tudo bem, consegui captar bons patrocínios e treinar e lutar eventos importantes nos EUA.

Como foi esse ingresso na GFTeam, foi tranquilo?

Foi engraçado. Teve um campeonato em Teresópolis e a galera da GFTeam foi competir. Eu acabei lutando com o Marcio Tubarão e fiz a final com o Denilson Pimenta, que hoje são meus irmãos. Assim que acabou nossa final eu fui pedir para fazer parte da GFTeam na maior cara-de-pau!

The maiden San Francisco Open was held this past Sunday in California, and the home team took the cake: Ralph Gracie had a romp and came up in first, with Peninsula BJJ and Gracie Humaitá rounding out the podium.

The big winner of the absolute was GFTeam’s Vitor Henrique, with Samir Chantre in second. Vitor also won the middleweight division, having overcome Marcos Torregrossa in the final.

MÃOZINHA HELPS RALPH GRACIE WIN

The standout at superheavyweight was Marcel “Mãozinha” Fortuna, an athlete on the winning team who took gold after beating James Puopolo (Lovato). Besides the silver, Puopolo also took bronze in the absolute.

O San Francisco Open fez sua estreia no último domingo, na Califa, e a festa foi dos donos da casa. Por equipes, a academia Ralph Gracie passeou e venceu o torneio, com Peninsula BJJ e Gracie Humaitá completando o pódio.

No absoluto, o grande campeão foi Vitor Henrique, da GFTeam, com Samir Chantre em segundo. Vitor venceu também o peso médio, ao superar Marcos Torregrossa.

No superpesado, destaque para Marcel “Mãozinha” Fortuna, atleta da equipe campeã que ficou com o ouro ao vencer James Puopolo (Lovato). Puopolo ficou com esta prata e o bronze absoluto.

What would bring someone to take a one-hour ride by bus to a scalding hot gymnasium at another city on a sun-drenched long weekend in Rio de Janeiro? The answer’s simple: top-notch Jiu-Jitsu. This Saturday marked day one of the World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship-qualifying tournament held in Niteroi, a city across the Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro. The gymnasium wasn’t in the best of shape but the fighters made up for it, making the trip worthwhile for anyone who forwent spending the day at the beach.

Besides getting to meet up with old friends, the highlight of the event was being able to get a glompse of heavyweight and absolute word champion Rodolfo Vieira. The GFTeam ace submitted three opponents on his way to Sunday’s under-92 kg final against Barbosa team’s Luiz Panza. Besides the excitement of having made it through to the weight class decider, Rodolfo was even more overjoyed by the news he would he seeing action at the European Open later this month: “It was a surprise. A friend of ours said he’d pay the trip, and I’m going,” he reported.

In the brown and black belt division, Rodolfo’s team secured another four berths in the main event in Abu Dhabi. In the over 92 kg division, Ricardo Evangelista overcame Bruno Bastos (Nova União) by a sweep. Besides having overcome one of last year’s finalists in Abu Dhabi, Evangelista went path three other opponents. At the other end of the bracket, Thiago Gaia (Nova União) had four matches himself. He had his work cut out for him in the semifinal against Igor Silva, but Gaia managed to work his way to back control and squeeze out a choke.

Another Master Julio Cesar student, Vitor Henrique reached the under-83 kg final after four matches. The semifinal started out with him training by a sweep to Victor Bonfim (Gordo Evolve), but he reciprocated with a sweep of his own and notched two more advantages for the win.

Barbosa team representative Adriano Silva had four matches of his own. In going through to the final, he beat David Vieira by a sweep.

The under-74 kg division belonged to GFTeam, with Vinicius Marinho and Theodoro Canal dominating the action. Marinho had three matches, with the semifinal standing out most, where he faced No-Gi Pan winner Davi Ramos. In a back-and-forth affair stuck in 50/50 guard, the match ended tied at 8-8 but with Vinicius holding a two-advantage point lead. Canal beat four opponents in closing out with his teammate.

Now Master Julio’s team sat out the under-65 kg division. The weight class belonged to the veteran Gabriel Willcox (Brazilian Fight), who can often be seen putting on a show at the Rio International Masters championship. Ahead of him, the black belt will take on the also-experienced Marcelo “Galinha” dos Santos (Instituto Reação). Willcox had four matches, while Marcelo had three really good ones.

In the femae division, Gabrielle Garcia (Alliance) carried on with her winning ways and now has Fernanda Mazelli ahead of her in the final. In the under-61 kg final, Jessica Santos takes on Hellen Bastos.

O sábado em Niterói foi de definições na seletiva do Rio de Janeiro para o World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship, competição que leva tos campeões ao evento principal, em Abu Dhabi.
