The black belt adult open weight division at the 2014 IBJJF Boston Spring Open held five athletes:

Lightweight Renan Borges of BTT
Lightweight Gianni Grippo of Alliance Marcelo Garcia
Middleweight Vinicius Silva of Team Link
Medium-heavyweight Jarod Lawton of New England United BJJ
Heavyweight Antonio Antonioli of Atos Jiu-Jitsu

The first match was Renan Borges against Vinicius Silva. Renan was able to secure a the back and a bow and arrow choke ensued from there moving him tot he semi-finals.

Antonio Antonioli had a bye and stepped into the semi-final. Renan pulled guard and after Antonio moved towards north south, he did not get around Renan’s inverted guard. Renan came up with an arm drag and earned an advantage since the referee called stop as they went out of bounds. Renan pulled guard again and then was able to secure a sweep off of x-guard and win the match 2-0 points.

The next match was on the other side of the bracket as Gianni Grippo faced Jarod Lawton. Gianni pulled guard and as Jarod attempted to pass Gianni swept. Jarod reciprocated with a sweep of his own. Gianni came up in a leg drag position to earn two points for a sweep and as he went to secure a pass, Jarod was able to stand. Gianni pulled guard once again and swept into 50-50 position and came up on top to earn another two points for the sweep. The match ended as Jarod attempted to attack the feet. The end score was 6-2 and Gianni earned his place in the final.

The final match began with a double-guard pull between Renan and Gianni. They were called for stalling since neither came up on top. Finally Renan sat up to pass and there were more stalling calls for inactivity. Renan tried for various passes with double-unders, over-unders and more but the lasso and spider guard of Gianni prevented any passes. Near the very end of the match Gianni was able to secure a berimbolo position and came up on top with a leg drag and took the back. Before he secured the hooks, he grabbed the lapel and submitted Renan with a bow and arrow choke.

The 18^th installment of Shooto Brazil, in Brasilia, was the biggest in the organization’s history. Ten fights were held at the Nilson Nelson gymnasium and the five thousand paying spectators were delivered all the excitement they could hope for.

In the evening’s main event, Guto Inocente didn’t have much work in putting away Argentina’s Gustavo Moia. A straight front kick literally left his opponent dangling from the ropes, and a follow-up knee to the body dropped Moia, who was unable to get up. The win in just forty seconds was worth the promotion’s heavyweight title.

Eder Jones showed his well-rounded MMA game. The beast from the Brazilian state of Bahia did well in the standup department and took Guilherme Braga down at will. The bout ended with a foot lock that caused Braga to scream, and referee Marlon Sandro called an end to the fight. Despite Braga’s protests about not having tapped, the decision was correct.

One of the revelations of the under 56 kg division, Alexandre Pantoja didn’t take long in beating Bruno Azevedo in a fight full of rivalry. After getting taken down, Pantoja tried for an armbar, but the finish came with a choke from back mount while still in the first round. The first round of the fight between John Lineker and Alvino Torres was breathtaking. Lineker, a boxing specialist, connected with a string of solid crosses. Alvino Torres responded with his muay thai, landing knees and kicks. In the second round, though, Lineker changed strategies and took the fight to the ground, where he ended the fight with a rear-naked choke.

Junior Field did well in the standup department and landed takedowns to take the unanimous decision over Antener “Peixe”. Rodrigo Medeiros and Vicente Luque had one of the most lively matches. Luque got the better of the standup, while Medeiros had the better time on the ground. The result yielded a draw. Claudio Rocha took Ermeson Queiroz down and finished up with an arm triangle in just one minute. Vinicius Silva didn’t need much time either. After knocking Vanderley Camilo down with a hard right, the fighter followed up with strikes until the referee intervened.

In the early matches, Gilberto Dias sunk an arm triangle on Heliovanio Batista. Now Fabio Shon beat Fabio Lima via unanimous decision.

A 18ª edição do Shooto Brasil, em Brasília, foi a maior da história da organização. O ginásio Nilson Nelson, com uma grande estrutura montada, recebeu nesta sexta-feira 10 combates e não faltou emoção para o público de aproximadamente cinco mil pagantes.  Aliás, se as lutas empolgaram bastante, o público também foi ao delírio com a paniquete Juju e a ex-BBB Jacque Khury. Haja coração!  

Na principal luta da noite, porém, Guto Inocente sobrou contra o argentino Gustavo Moia. O representante de Brasília aplicou um pisão frontal que, literalmente, isolou o adversário nas cordas. No embalo do movimento, Guto conectou uma joelhada no corpo de Moia, que não pôde mais se levantar. O triunfo, em apenas 40s, valeu ao striker o título de pesados da organização.

Eder Jones mostrou que tem o jogo completo no MMA. A fera da Bahia foi bem na trocação e aplicou boas quedas contra Guilherme Braga. Por fim, encaixou uma chave de pé que fez o adversário gritar e só restou ao juiz Marlon Sandro intervir. Lamentável foi o atleta tentar alegar que não foi finalizado, mesmo mancando bastante depois do combate. Realmente, Braga não bateu, mas o grito foi escutado por todos próximos do ringue, e a regra é clara quanto a esse tipo de situação. Decisão corretíssima do árbitro, que preservou a integridade física de Guilherme.

Tido como uma das revelações na categoria 56kg, Alexandre Pantoja não demorou a bater Bruno Azevedo numa luta com muita rivalidade. Quedado, Pantoja tentou um armlock, mas finalizou com um mata-leão pelas costas, ainda no primeiro round. A primeira parcial da luta entre John Lineker e Alvino Torres foi de tirar o fôlego. Lineker, especialista em boxe, acertava fortes socos cruzados. Já Alvino Torres vinha com joelhadas e chutes, num fino muay thai. No segundo assalto, entretanto, Lineker mudou a estratégia e derrubou. No chão, pegou as costas e finalizou com um mata-leão.

Junior Field foi bem na trocação e conseguiu boas quedas para bater Antenor “Peixe” por decisão unânime. Rodrigo Medeiros e Vicente Luque também fizeram uma das lutas mais movimentadas. Luque foi melhor na trocação, enquanto Medeiros trabalhou bem ao chão. O resultado disso deu empate. Claudio Rocha derrubou e encaixou o triângulo de braço para finalizar Ermeson Queiroz em 1min de luta. Vinícius Silva também não precisou de muito tempo. Depois de acertar um duro soco direto, que derrubou Vanderley Camilo, o lutador desferiu mais alguns golpes até a interrupção.

Nas primeiras lutas, Gilberto Dias arrochou no triângulo para finalizar Heliovanio Batista. Já Fábio Lima bateu Jackson Oliveira por decisão unânime.
