O US Open 2011, no último fim de semana, terminou com uma batalha de tirar o fôlego, a final do absoluto faixa-preta. De um lado, o campeão peso pesado Diego Herzog, o Nosferatu (Ralph Gracie). Do outro, o campeão médio Carlos Diego Ferreira (Arsenal). E a briga dos xarás pegou fogo, com vitória no finzinho de Herzog, que ajudou sua equipe a faturar o troféu de melhor time na categoria adulto.

Batemos um papo rápido com o vice-campeão absoluto sobre a peleja, e os novos desejos na carreira. Confira!

“Mano, fiz muitas boas lutas no US Open 16. Ganhei minha categoria e perdi minha final do absoluto”, disse Carlos. “Fiz três lutas na categoria e finalizei todas no estrangulamento”.

“A final do absoluto fiz contra meu xará, e foi uma luta muito boa, muito forte. Eu estava me saindo bem, mas o juiz cometeu muitos erros. Tem nada não, agora é esperar o próximo campeonato. Vou treinar ainda mais no Texas”, disse.

“Vejo meu jogo ficando muito melhor agora. Boa parte desse mérito é dos meus amigos de treino, que estão me ajudando demais. Vou lutar o Mundial Sem Kimono em novembro, o treino agora é todo para isso. Meu jogo é parecido com e sem kimono, pois treino bastante dos dois jeitos. Vou para fazer um bom Mundial”, encerra.

Last weekend, US Open 2011 ended in an awe-inspiring battle in the final of the absolute black belt division. On one side, heavyweight champion Diego “Nosferatu” Herzog (Ralph Gracie). On the other, middleweight winner Carlos Diego Ferreira (Arsenal). The war that ensued between the like-named competitors ended with Herzog pulling off the win late in the match, helping is team take first in the overall adult standing.

We had a quick chat with the absolute runner-up regarding the match and what he’s looking forward to in his career. Here’s what he had to say:

“Bro, we had a lot of great matches at US Open 16. I won my division and lost the absolute final late in the match,” said Carlos. “I had three matches at weight and won them all by choke.

“The absolute final was great, really tough. I was doing well but the ref made some mistakes. No problem, now I’m just going to hang on till the next championship. I train even more in Texas,” he said.

“I see my game improving a lot now. A lot of the credit for that goes to my training partners, who help me so much. I’ll be at the No-Gi Worlds in November; that’s what I’m training for now. My No-Gi and Gi games are similar, since I train both. I’m fixing to have a good Worlds,” he said in closing.

The 16th US Open event ended this Sunday in San Jose, California, and a new black belt absolute champion took front and center. Diego “Nosferatu” Herzog eked past Carlos Diego Ferreira (Arsenal JJ) by an advantage point in the decider, taking the throne of last year’s winner, Marcel Mãozinha, a teammate of Herzog’s.

“It was an awesome match!” reported our correspondent Dan Rod. “Herzog won by a small margin. But my hat’s off to Carlos too – halfway through, his knee popped so loud it echoed around the convention center! At that point he was losing. The doctor came, put an ice pack on it, and he hid the look of pain on his face so as not to have to forfeit the match. He started competing again and, little by little, he tied the score. And he almost won by getting back mount, but they fell out of the match area. In the end, Herzog took it by an advantage point.”

A native of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, Nosferatu won the heavyweight division as well, while Amazonas state native Carlos Diego put in a splendid display in winning at middleweight. Also a standout of the event, Marcos Torregrosa (Lloyd Irvin/Yemaso) took first at lightweight, with Theodoro Canal (Coalition 95) in second. Fabio Passos (Alliance) reigned at featherweight.

A 16ª edição do US Open terminou nesse domingo em San José, Califórnia, com um novo campeão absoluto na faixa-preta. Diego Herzog, o Nosferatu, venceu Carlos Diego Ferreira (Arsenal JJ) por uma vantagem, e tomou o trono do aberto, ano passado conquistado por Marcel Mãozinha, companheiro de equipe de Herzog.

“Foi um lutaço!”, conta o correspondente Dan Rod. “Herzog ganhou por pouco. Mas tiro o meu chapéu pro Carlos também – no meio da luta o joelho dele deu uma estalada que ecoou pelo centro de convenções! Nessa hora ele estava perdendo. O médico veio, botou um gelinho, e ele prendeu a cara de dor para não entregar a luta. Ele voltou a lutar e, devagarzinho, por baixo, empatou a luta. E quase ganhou ao pegar as costas, mas eles saíram do dojô. No fim, o Herzog ganhou a vantagem e levou”.

O catarinense Nosferatu levou também o peso pesado, enquanto o amazonense Carlos Diego brilhou ao faturar o peso médio. Outro campeão que se destacou foi Marcos Torregrosa (Lloyd Irvin/Yemaso), que ficou em primeiro lugar no peso leve, com Theodoro Canal (Coalition 95) em segundo. Entre os penas, quem reinou foi Fabio Passos (Alliance).
