There was no lack of excitement at San Jose, California’s Independence High School last Saturday, when the US Open 17 came to town. The Claudio França-promoted event featured memorable moments from purple to black belt.

Augusto Mendes, o “Tanquinho”, está com agenda cheia. No fim de semana que vem, o professor da Soul Fighters disputa o peso e provavelmente o absoluto do US Open, em San José, evento tradicional dos EUA que chega a sua 17ª edição.

O torneio, organizado pelo carioca Claudio França, encerra suas inscrições nesta segunda-feira, às 23h59, horário da Califa, portanto é bom correr. Será sorteada uma passagem Califa-Nova York entre os competidores.

No clima do US Open e da Copa Pódio, ano que vem, Tanquinho falou ao GRACIEMAG.com sobre seu recente retorno, o duelo com JT Torres na final do Boston Open e muito mais.

GRACIEMAG: Após cirurgia delicada, você tem mantido um bom ritmo de competições. Como se sente?

AUGUSTO TANQUINHO: Estou muito feliz por ter voltado a lutar! Depois de passar o que passei, com a cirurgia delicada nas costas, fisioterapia e o fato de precisar voltar do zero fisicamente e tecnicamente, acho que os resultados não foram maus. Venci o Las Vegas Open e o American Nationals, e fiquei com a medalha de prata no Boston Open. Ainda não estou 100% mas estou treinando muito, encarei atletas realmente muito bons e isso vai me ajudar a melhorar.

Como foi a final do Boston Open, com o JT, na sua visão?

Foi uma boa luta. Perdi nas vantagens para ele, acho que cansei perto do final, mas tive vários erros técnicos no decorrer da luta que fizeram a diferença. Ainda não estou com o tempo perfeito das posições e isso contra um atleta do nível do JT é fatal. Você não pode errar. Mas estou trabalhando duro na academia e no American Nationals já senti uma melhora.

Como está sua expectativa para o US Open 17, que ocorre no fim de semana em San José?

É a melhor possível, o US Open é um dos maiores eventos de Jiu-Jitsu dos EUA, só perde para o Mundial e Pan da IBJJF na minha visão. É um evento com uma organização impecável e excelentes  atletas, quem ainda não foi vale a ida. Estou fazendo minha preparação como sempre – dou uma ênfase maior na parte de condicionamento, e faço muito drill para pegar o tempo das posições. Talvez eu apareça no absoluto também, vai ser divertido.

Marcada para janeiro, a Copa Pódio criou agora este duelo casado, onde os homens lutam primeiro e a disputa termina com a luta das namoradas. Como você está prevendo esta luta ao lado de sua namorada Mackenzie?

A Copa Pódio, através do Jeferson Maycá, tem uma proposta legal de valorizar os astros do Jiu-Jitsu, e a cada evento vem se superando. Vamos fazer parte da primeira luta de casais da história do Jiu-Jitsu, isso deixa a gente muito feliz. A Mackenzie é uma atleta fora do normal, extremamente comprometida e sempre buscando melhorar. Isso só me faz crescer também. Acho que a ideia é um ótimo incentivo para todos os casais que treinam Jiu-Jitsu e até para incentivar maridos e esposas a começarem a treinar.

Você enfrenta o Davi Ramos na Copa Pódio. Como acha que será?

Pedreira, né! O Davi é um excelente atleta e um grande amigo. Já lutamos duas vezes, e está 1 a 1. Estou certo de que será uma ótima luta e vamos levantar o público lá. Tem tudo para ser uma das melhores lutas da noite.

A luta de casais envolve suar e depois orientar a namorada. Como vai funcionar a estratégia e tudo mais?

Falta tempo ainda, e como temos outros campeonatos pela frente não traçamos a estratégia ainda. Normalmente já fico nervoso vendo a Mackenzie lutar… Acho que agora será pior ainda, porque ela terá de começar a lutar a partir do placar que eu deixar para ela. Então espero não deixar muita responsabilidade nas mãos dela.

Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes has got his hands full. Next weekend the professor at Soul Fighters will be wading into the mix at weight and likely in the absolute too, at the 17th installment of the traditional US Open.

Sign-ups for the Claudio França-promoted tournament end at 11:59 PM California time this Monday, so you’d best hurry. A California-New York plane ticket will be raffled off to the competitors.

Raring to hit the mats at the US Open and next year’s Copa Pódio, Tanquinho spoke with GRACIEMAG.com about his recent return, his showdown with JT Torres in the final at the Boston Open, and much more.

GRACIEMAG: Since undergoing delicate surgery, you’ve kept a pretty good pace in competition. How do you feel?

AUGUSTO TANQUINHO: I’m so glad to be back! After going through what I did—delicate surgery on my back, physiotherapy and starting over all the way from scratch physically and technically—, I don’t feel the results were all that bad. I won the Las Vegas Open and the American Nationals and took silver at the Boston Open. I’m still not 100% but I’m training a lot. I’ve faced really good athletes, and that will help me get better.

How do you feel the final of the Boston Open, against JT, went?

It was a good match. I lost to him on advantages. I think I got tired towards the end, but still, I made a bunch of technical blunders that made the difference. I don’t have the timing right on the positions just yet, and that against an athlete of JT’s caliber is fatal. You can’t make mistakes. But I’m working hard in the academy, and at the American Nationals I felt some improvement.

What are your expectations for next weekend in San Jose at US Open 17?

I expect the very best. The US Open is one of the biggest Jiu-Jitsu events in the USA, behind only the Worlds and the Pan, in my view. It’s an impeccably organized event with excellent athletes. Anyone who hasn’t been yet, it’s worth the trip. I’m doing my preparations like I always do—I emphasize physical conditioning more, doing drills to get the timing for the positions down pat. I might show up in the absolute as well. It’ll be fun.

The organizers of Copa Pódio put together that couples matchup for the January event, with the men facing off before the girlfriends compete against each other. How do you see this match, where you compete alongside your girlfriend, Mackenzie, playing out?

Copa Pódio, through Jeferson Maycá, has a cool angle to it, where they appreciate Jiu-Jitsu stars, and they’ve been outdoing themselves with every event. We’ll be part of the first couples matchup in Jiu-Jitsu history, and that makes us really happy. Mackenzie is an extraordinary athlete. She’s extremely committed and is always looking to improve. That makes me grow as well. I feel the idea is great incentive for couples who practice Jiu-Jitsu and is even incentive for husbands and wives to start training together.

You’ll be facing Davi Ramos at Copa Pódio. What do you think that will be like?

It’ll be rough, right? Davi’s an excellent athlete and a great friend. We’ve faced each other twice before, and the score’s tied at 1-1. I’m certain it’ll be a great match and the crowd will dig it. It’s got all the makings of fight of the night.

The couples match involves squaring off and then cornering your girlfriend. What will the strategy and whatnot be?

There’s still time to go, and we’ve got other championships ahead of us, so we haven’t come up with a game plan yet. Usually I get pretty nervous watching Mackenzie compete… I think this time it’ll be even worse because she’ll have to pick up in her match with the score I leave for her. So I hope I don’t make her shoulder too much responsibility.

The US Open, California’s longest running Jiu-Jitsu tournament, has some news for 2012.

Confirmed for the 6th and 7th of October at San Jose’s Independence High School, the 17th installment of the Claudio França-promoted event will be featuring two new divisions.

This year, women over 30 years of age will have the opportunity to fight in the master division. Now the senior men will also get a new age group—senior 4, for fighters over 50.

Confirmado para os dias 6 e 7 de outubro, em San Jose, na Independence High School, a 17ª edição do campeonato organizado por Claudio França abriu duas novas divisões.

Este ano, as mulheres terão a oportunidade de lutar na categoria master, acima de 30 anos. Os homens sêniors, por sua vez, também ganham mais uma faixa etária, o sênior 4, para lutadores acima de 50 anos.
