TJ Waldburger no UFC

O peso meio-médio TJ Waldburger, 24 anos, era um famoso desconhecido para o grande público e para os fãs do Jiu-Jitsu, antes do TUF 16 Finale.

Mas isso foi só até arrochar uma guilhotina em Nick Catone, variar para o triângulo e apagar o oponente. Em nossa conta no Twitter, cantamos na hora: “Será a finalização da noite?

Dito e feito, TJ (16v, 7d) levou para casa os 65 mil dólares pela finalização da noite. Mas quem de fato é TJ Waldburger?

Anthony “TJ” começou a carreira muito jovem, como ele relembrou ao nosso repórter Erik Fontanez.

Garoto em Belton, Texas, ele começou bem cedo a brincar de lutas, embolando-se com os amigos enquanto via as lutas na TV. Era um menino aficionado por esportes e muito enérgico, o que levou o padrasto a procurar direcionar aquela energia em algo que fosse render frutos: uma academia de MMA.

TJ até achou que o padrasto estava brincando. Mas, quando viu, tinha largado os pedaços de lençóis que amarrava nos punhos para fingir de luvas, e já treinava com material adequado.

Waldburger fez sua primeira luta como profissional aos 17 anos, em 2005, antes de atingir a maioridade. Ele precisou de autorização dos pais, e foi quando convenceu a família de que queria isso para sua vida. Não foi fácil.

“Depois de muita conversa e lágrimas nos olhos, convenci meus pais a assinarem a permissão para eu lutar. Eles entenderam que eu iria me tornar bom nisso”, revelou TJ ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Após “15 ou 16” lutas sem ganhar quase nenhum dinheiro, a fama viria com o UFC.

“Na verdade o dinheiro não é prioridade. Eu realmente amo o que faço”, disse o faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu, que treina na Grappler’s Lair. “Lembro na escola, o pessoal dizia que eu era louco. Mas a luta acendeu um fogo em mim. Não tem pressão igual a estar ali dentro de um ringue, é algo eletrizante”.

TJ Waldburger fez sua primeira luta pelo UFC em 2010, quando venceu David Mitchell na decisão unânime dos jurados durante o UFN 22. Sua vitória sobre Nick Catone foi sua sexta passagem pelo octógono.

O amor pelas lutas não é balela: ele casou-se e teve um filho com Shayla Moore, filha de seu professor, John Moore.

Nate Marquardt completou em agosto cinco anos de Ultimate Fighting como um dos principais atletas na categoria de médios do MMA mundial.

Agora, para ele chegou a hora de não desperdiçar mais chances pelo cinturão de Anderson Silva.

O americano de Aurora, Colorado, já teve sua oportunidade contra Anderson, em julho de 2007, no UFC 73, quando acabou derrotado no primeiro assalto.

Depois, galgava os degraus de volta ao topo quando perdeu para Thales Leites, no UFC 85. Venceu mais duas pedreiras e pegou Demian Maia de jeito, com um soco, mas perdeu para Chael Sonnen.

Agora, novamente postulante ao cinturão do UFC, depois da vitória sobre Rousimar Toquinho, no UFC Fight Night 22 em setembro, Marquardt (30v, 9d, 2e) volta a mirar no campeão Anderson.

“Gostaria de lutar pelo cinturão de novo, é o meu sonho. Não foi dessa vez, então não estou chorando por isso. Lógico que quero isso, mas, se não aconteceu, estou preparado para fazer mais uma luta e depois tentar o título novamente”, comenta ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Se não é o próximo adversário pelo título, Nate aproveita para observar bem o combate entre Anderson e Vitor Belfort, que acontece no dia 5 de fevereiro, em Las Vegas.

“Vai ser uma grande luta Anderson contra Belfort. Vou ficar de olho e pronto para enfrentar o vencedor, se for o caso.”

Enquanto isso, o lutador segue afiando o chão, uma das suas grandes qualidades, com o faixa-preta Amal Easton, que prepara feras como Shane Carwin e Brendan Schaub. Nate se mostra um grande admirador da arte suave.

“Treinava muito de kimono, principalmente quando dava aulas. Agora treino menos, mas gosto muito e me divirto quando uso o kimono”, diz.

No último confronto, o Jiu-Jitsu foi uma das prioridades para enfrentar Rousimar Palhares, o Toquinho. Valeu a pena. Nate conseguiu se desvencilhar da perigosa chave de calcanhar do brasileiro e venceu por nocaute.

“O Toquinho é um grande lutador, mas também sou faixa-preta e luto e treino com caras de alto nível no Jiu-Jitsu. Tenho bastante experiência, treino com uma galera muito boa e me sinto preparado para enfrentar os grandes faixas-pretas.”

Amante da luta de chão, Nate reverencia e agradece à família que mais representa o Jiu-Jitsu.

“Os Gracie são os pais do MMA. Se não fosse por eles, o esporte não estaria como está hoje. Não seria a mesma coisa. Eles que realmente criaram isso e têm grande parte na importância que esse esporte alcançou”, encerra.

Nate Marquardt completed five years in the Ultimate Fighting Championship as one of those at the top of the world MMA middleweight pecking order.

Now, it’s at the point where he can no longer squander any shots at at Anderson Silva’s belt.

The Aurora, Colorado native has had his shot at Anderson Silva in the past, in July 2007, when he lost in the first round at UFC 73.

He then climbed back up a few rungs till he dropped a decision to Thales Leites at UFC 85. He beat two more stalwart fighters and put away Demian Maia in style, dropping early with a punch, and then went on to lose to Chael Sonnen.

Now, again back in the UFC title mix after his win against Rousimar Toquinho at UFC Fight Night 22 back in September, Marquardt (30w, 9l, 2d) returns his sights to champion Anderson.

“I’d like to fight for the title again; that’s my dream. It didn’t happen this time, só I’m not going to moan about it. Of course that’s what I want, but if it didn’t happen, I’m prepared to do another fight and then try for the title again,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com.

If his next opponent isn’t for the title, Nate will bide his time by watching keenly the bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort on February 5 in Las Vegas.

“Anderson versus Belfort is going to be a great fight. I’ll be watching and ready to face the winner, should that be the case.”

In the meantime, the fighter carries on brushing up his ground game – one of greatest strengths – with black belt Amal Easton, who trains beasts like Shane Carwin and Brendan Schaub. Nate has shown himself to be a great gentle art admirer.

“I used to train in the gi a lot, mainly when I would teach. Now I train less, but I like it a lot and have fun when I wear the gi,” he says.

In his last outing, Jiu-Jitsu was one of his priorities in facing Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares. It proved to be worth it. Nate managed to free himself of the Brazilian’s dangerous heel hook and win by knockout.

“Toquinho is a great fighter, but I’m a black belt, too, and I fight and train with high-level Jiu-Jitsu guys. I have a lot of experience, train with a good gang and feel ready to face all the great black belts.”

A lover of the grappling game, Nate reveers and thanks the family that represents Jiu-Jitsu most.

The Gracies are the fathers of MMA. If it weren’t for them, the sport wouldn’t be where it is today. It wouldn’t be the same thing. They were really the ones who created it and are a huge part of where the sport is now,” he says in closing.

Alan Belcher is going through the most delicate moment of his career so far. The fighter was in Brazil preparing for his fight with Demian Maia, which would have taken place at UFN 22, had to rush home to the USA due to a detached retina in his right eye, which pulled him from the fight and, after two surgical procedures, has his future hanging in the balance.

“Since the second surgery, they’ve really given no timetable. I’ve gotta get out of the woods. The doctor hasn’t given me any expectations on when I’ll be back or anything,” he told MMAJunkie.com.

Precautions must be doubled. Should he return to combat without proper care, the fighter could lose his sight. Should he go blind in one eye and suffer a detached retina in the other, after taking a hit, Belcher faces the grim possibility of being left completely without sight.

“The biggest problem we’re looking at is if my eyesight doesn’t get better, and if my other retina detaches, then I’ll basically be blind in both eyes instead of just one. That’s the main thing I’m trying to do – is getting my eyesight better in my right eye where I’d be able to depend on my right if I lost my left,” he further elaborated in the article.

So now Alan is patiently following through with treatment and doing what he must to get well:

“Right now, I’m taking it one day at a time.”

Alan Belcher vive a fase mais delicada da carreira. O lutador esteve no Brasil, onde se preparava para o desafio contra Demian Maia, que ocorreria no UFN 22. Entretanto, Belcher teve de voltar às pressas para os EUA. Um descolamento de retina, no olho direito, o afastou do combate e, depois de duas cirurgias, seu futuro segue incerto.

“Desde a segunda cirurgia, os médicos não me deram nenhuma previsão. Preciso me tirar do pior. O médico não me deu nenhuma expectativa quanto à minha volta”, comenta ao site MMAJunkie.

Os cuidados devem se redobrados. A volta aos combates, de forma indevida, pode custar a visão do lutador. Se ficar cego de um olho e descolar a retina do outro, depois de algum golpe, Belcher pode ficar totalmente sem visão.

“O pior caso seria se minha visão não melhorar, e se a retina de meu outro olho se descolar. Assim, eu estaria basicamente cego nos dois olhos, em vez de só um. Essa é a principal coisa que estou tratando, melhorar a visão no meu olho direito”, conta.

O lutador mantém a paciência e segue o tratamento. Nada melhor que um dia após o outro.

“Estou lidando com a situação dia por dia”, encerra.

Os meninos lutam neste fim de semana no Fighters 98 e logo depois tenho dois atletas da filial do Maranhão, do meu faixa-preta Rodrigo Granola, que lutam no começo de outubro. O Marcio lutar no Brasil Fight 3, no desafio Minas x São Paulo, e estou fechando lutas no Predador FC e Impacto Total. Tenho muitos atletas bons e vamos mostrar nossos novos talentos”, comenta o treinador Ericson Cardozo.

Following Charles do Bronx’s September 15 win at UFC 22, four more fighters from Bronx’s Gold Team’s stable fight this Saturday at the Fighters 98 event. The team’s up-and-coming talent Rafael Nunes, Junior Oliveira and Junior Maranhão will be making their MMA debuts, while Rafael Costa will have a juvenile Jiu-Jitsu match at the event.

“I’m overjoyed with Charles’s win and we’re already back at work. The kids will fight this weekend at Fighters 98, and soon thereafter there will be two more fighters from our branch in Maranhão, run by my black belt Rodrigo Granola, who will fight in early October. Marcio will fight at Brasil Fight 3, at the Minas vs. São Paulo challenge, and I’m setting up fights at the Predador FC and Impacto Total events. I have a lot of really good athletes and we’re going to showcase the new talent,” stated trainer Ericson Cardozo.

Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira made it to the 14^th win of his career at UFN 22, surprising favored-to-win winner of the “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show Efrain Escudero. The undefeated fighter took home his second submission-of-the-night bonus check, in two fights in the promotion, to boot. The beast from coastal São Paulo state, an Ericson Cardozo brown belt, had the following chat with GRACIEMAG.com:

In your fights, you always seem calm and look to push the pace from the get go. Do you not feel any pressure when you’re in there?

One always gets nervous. My posture has to do with the work of the team, which makes me more confident. In the cage it’s just me, the opponent and the judge. My trainers, Ericson and Macaco (Jorge Patino) always help me stay calm. I go in always focused on what I need to do, with our game plan in mind, and it works out.

A lot of MMA fighters with Jiu-Jitsu backgrounds set the gi aside when fight time approaches. What do you do?

I train in the gi the whole time. I don’t stop, not even close to fight time. I train Jiu-Jitsu and MMA the whole time, always both. Jiu-Jitsu is my mainstay, it’s what takes the foreground. But I always do both, I can’t forsake one for the other.

This time, despite your winning by submission again, you showed in the UFC that you have good standup. Do you feel your standup game is at the same level as your ground game?

Like in Jiu-Jitsu, when I see an opening to decide the fight, I finish. But training MMA here at Bronx’s Gold Team is complete, from top to bottom. I’m a complete fighter, too. I know I have a lot to improve on in the standup, but we always find a work-around standing or on the ground. There’s always a way to finesse it!

What are your thoughts on your division in the UFC (lightweight) and current champion Frankie Edgar?

There are a lot of tough guys in my division. Indeed, just to be in the UFC you have to be good. Everyone has their own fight style, but nobody’s silly. Frankie Edgar deserves what he’s got because of the work he’s been doing. He beat the champ and he’s the man, the man to beat. Now it’s all about doing my job and if I get a shot at him, that would be marvelous. He’s to be congratulated and is doing things right.

What was it like entering the UFC and winning two fights in such great fashion in such a short space of time?

I’m so happy about it. Getting into the UFC was marvelous. Thank God I managed to get into the biggest event in the world. I hope to keep doing well and now I’m keeping focused and forging ahead.

Do you know if you’ll fight again by the end of the year?

For the time being I’m just enjoying having won. I have nothing lined up yet. I’ll let you know when I do.

Nas lutas você se mostra sempre calmo e busca logo imprimir o ritmo, bota o jogo em prática. Você não sente pressão ali dentro?   

Nervoso a gente sempre fica. A minha postura tem a ver com o trabalho do time, que me deixa sempre mais confiante. Ali dentro sou eu, o adversário e o juiz apenas. Meus treinadores, o Ericson e o (Jorge Patino) Macaco também sempre me ajudam, me passam calma. Entro concentrado sempre no que vou fazer, com o jogo em mente, que dá certo.

Muitos lutadores de MMA que vêm do Jiu-Jitsu deixam o kimono de lado perto das lutas. Como você faz?

Treino de kimono o tempo todo, não paro, mesmo perto das lutas. Treino Jiu-Jitsu e MMA direto, sempre as duas coisas. O Jiu-Jitsu é o meu carro chefe, é ele que está na frente. Mas sempre coloco os dois, não posso deixar nenhum de lado.

Dessa vez, apesar de ter finalizado novamente, você pôde mostrar dentro do UFC que tem a trocação afiada. Você realmente acha que a sua luta em pé está no mesmo padrão que no chão?

Com o Jiu-Jitsu, quando tive a chance de decidir, finalizei. Mas o treino de MMA aqui na Bronx’s Gold Team é completo, seja em cima ou por baixo. Sou um atleta completo também. Sei que tenho que melhorar muito na trocação, mas a gente se vira em pé ou no chão. Dá sempre para dar um jeitinho!

O que acha da sua categoria no UFC (leve) e do atual campeão, Frankie Edgar?

Na minha categoria todos os caras são duros. Aliás, para estar no UFC tem que ser bom. Ali cada um tem seu estilo de luta, mas ninguém é bobo. O Frankie Edgar é merecedor pelo trabalho que vem fazendo. Ele ganhou do campeão e é o cara, o homem a ser batido. Agora é trabalhar e, se tiver a chance de lutar com ele, vai ser maravilhoso. Ele está de parabéns e está fazendo o trabalho certo.

Como foi toda essa reviravolta, entrar no UFC e já vencer muito bem dois combates num curto espaço de tempo?

Estou muito feliz com isso na minha vida. Fechar com o Ultimate é maravilhoso. Graças a Deus, consegui fechar com o maior evento do mundo. Espero ir sempre bem e agora é manter o foco e continuar em frente.

Sabe se luta novamente até o fim do ano?

Por enquanto, estou descansando e aproveitando essa vitória. Ainda não tenho nada pela frente. Quando tiver, aviso.

Rousimar Toquinho’s coach Murilo Bustamante explained his fighter’s posture against Nate Marquardt at this Wednesday’s UFN 22 event. Toquinho diverted his attention during the bout to complain to the referee when he was caught off guard by a string of strikes and knocked out.

“What happened was that Rousimar thought Marquardt had Vaseline on his legs. He felt that was the case and complained to the ref. He was naïve in doing so,” said Murilo direct from Texas to GRACIEMAG.com.

“Marquardt carried on fighting – correctly –, as anyone would. The athletic commission examined him and detected nothing awry. Now we’ll forge ahead,” he said in lament.
