Former WEC champion Ben Henderson will now get his shot at Frankie Edgar’s UFC lightweight belt. The bout was announced just after he beat Clay Guida at UFC on Fox, and the promotion’s February return to Japan will be the occasion. Edgar has been leaving audiences in awe, even UFC president Dana White picks him as the second-best fighter around at the moment, just behind Anderson Silva. However, as Ben told our reporter Deb Blyth in GRACIEMAG 176, when you believe, you can do anything.

“Having faith is what helps me. How I walk around, how I act, how I conduct myself is all a part of that faith. Some guys are afraid to lose. I don’t have that fear. I can open my heart and lay it out on the line.”

And that was just how the fighter born in Washington state blazed his trail to 15 career wins and one loss.

“We were all sitting around talking, and they said I’d never get in the cage. I was like, ‘Oh really?’

“I talked a big game and had to back it up, and I won the fight on a TKO ref stoppage. I took him down and threw some ugly hammer fists. I had no idea what I was doing. You should have seen my jab… it was pretty atrocious! But afterwards I thought, ‘Okay, I think I’m going to try this as a career.’”

Since that first fight, Ben went on to dedicate himself to learning other styles and developed tremendous Jiu-Jitsu skills. Henderson, now a brown belt, is a regular at gi Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and even won bronze at this year’s World Championship. Does he have what it takes to stop Edgar?

“Plain and simple, I want to be the best UFC fighter on the planet, period. Most people haven’t seen how good I can be.”

Ex-campeão do WEC, Ben Henderson agora vai ter a chance pelo cinturão de leves do UFC, contra Frankie Edgar. A oportunidade foi dada logo após a vitória sobre Clay Guida, no UFC on Fox, e o desafio é em fevereiro, no evento programado para o Japão. Edgar vem surpreendendo, apontado por Dana White,presidente do Ultimate, como segundo melhor lutador da atualidade, atrás apenas de Anderson Silva. No entanto, como Ben disse a repórter Deb Blyth na GRACIEMAG #176, quando se acredita tudo é possível:

“Acreditar é o que me leva longe. Como eu ando por aí, como eu ajo, como conduzo a minha vida, tudo faz parte da minha fé. Alguns caras têm medo de perder, eu não tenho o que temer. Posso abrir o meu coração e deixar tudo no octagon.”

Foi dessa forma que o lutador, nascido em Washington, passou a trilhar a carreira que hoje conta com 15 vitórias e apenas uma derrota.

“Estávamos conversando eu e alguns parceiros de treino, especulando sobre quem se daria bem no MMA. Falaram que o MMA não era muito a minha. Eu virei e disse: ‘Ah, não?’. Decidi então me inscrever em um evento tendo apenas o meu conhecimento de wrestling. Acabei ganhando a luta por nocaute técnico. Não tinha ideia do que realmente estava fazendo. Tinha que ver o meu jap, era horroroso! Depois disso pensei : ‘ Acho que vou apostar nessa carreira’.”

Ben passou a se dedicar em outras modalidades e desenvolveu grandes habilidades no Jiu-Jitsu. O lutador, faixa-marrom, costuma competir de kimono e conquistou até a medalha de bronze no Mundial deste ano. Seria impossível derrotar Edgar?

“É simples, quero ser o melhor lutador do UFC. A maioria das pessoas ainda não viu o quão bom posso ser.”

Junior Cigano made history for more than becoming UFC heavyweight champion. In overcoming Cain Velasquez this Saturday, he participated in the first live UFC broadcast on network television in both the USA and in Brazil, where audience champion Globo showcased the main event. According to UFC president Dana White, around 60 million people watched the UFC in Brazil.

The solid numbers had the promotional top dog comparing the country to the Canadian market. It was in Canada, after all, where the UFC took its largest gate ever.

Proof of its success, on January 14 the event returns to Brazil, where the audience is skyrocketing across the board – on network TV and in pay-per-view sales.

On cable channel SporTV, for example, the UFC 139 broadcast, featuring BJ Penn vs. Nick Diaz, even without a single Brazilian on the card, was a success. The channel led the time slot, with numbers more than twice what the second-placed channel was getting. Around 1.3 million people tuned in to SporTV during the broadcast.

The number of subscribers to Combate channel, which holds broadcast rights until 2014, rose a great deal in 2011. According to an article in “Folha de São Paulo” newspaper, there are already 160,000 regular subscribers.

The new TV contract in Brazil guarantees Globo the right to broadcast on network television all the UFC events held in Brazil and another three held abroad. The other events are left for Combate, which also holds the internet broadcast rights and is the only channel to broadcast all the fights, including the under card.

“Having the rights to these broadcasts in place at the precise moment when MMA is starting to be aired on Globo kicks off a great cycle for Globosat’s fight channel. An MMA event being shown on network television promotes interest in the style, making it more popular,” says the Combate channel marketing team.

Junior Cigano entra para a história não apenas por ser campeão peso pesado do UFC. A vitória sobre Cain Velasquez, neste sábado, foi na primeira transmissão ao vivo na TV aberta americana e pela Rede Globo, líder de audiência no Brasil. Segundo o presidente do Ultimate, Dana White, cerca de 60 milhões de pessoas assistiram ao UFC no Brasil. Os bons números fizeram o dirigente comparar o país ao mercado canadense. Foi no Canadá, por exemplo, o palco da maior bilheteria do Ultimate.

Prova do sucesso, no dia 14 de janeiro o evento retorna ao Brasil, país em que a audiência só aumenta, seja na TV aberta, fechada ou pay-per-view.

No canal fechado SporTV, por exemplo, a transmissão do UFC 139, com BJ Penn VS Nick Diaz, mesmo sem nenhum brasileiro no card, foi um sucesso.  Levou o canal à liderança da TV fechada no horário, com desempenho maior que o dobro do segundo colocado. Cerca de 1,3 milhão de pessoas passaram pelo SporTV durante a transmissão.

O número de assinantes do Combate, canal a la carte e que detém os direitos de transmissão até 2014, aumentou bastante em 2011. Segundo reportagem na “Folha de São Paulo”, já são 160 mil assinantes fixos.

O novo contrato de TV no Brasil garante à Globo a exibição em rede aberta de todos os eventos do UFC que serão realizados no Brasil e três realizados no exterior. Os outros eventos do UFC ficam por conta do Combate, que também detém os direitos de transmissão na internet e é o único que transmite todas as lutas, inclusive as preliminares.

“Ter estes direitos fechados justo no momento em que o MMA chega às telas da Globo abre para o canal de lutas da Globosat um ciclo virtuoso. A exposição de um evento de MMA em TV aberta ajuda a promover o interesse pela modalidade, popularizando-a”, comenta a equipe de marketing do Combate.

Kongo was nearly eliminated in two consecutive moments. It looked like the ref was going to jump in at any moment. He did well to let it play out, though, as the Frenchman found his feet and, with two thudding fists, struck back at Barry, who collapsed unconscious.

Deservedly, Kongo took the 50,000 dollar knockout of the night bonus.

As anyone who watched could imagine, the knockout of the night bonus went to Cheick Kongo, who after nearly getting knocked out by Patrick Barry twice, struck back with an uppercut on the button and stuck an exclamation point at the end of a thrilling encounter. Now the fight of the night went to Charles do Bronx’s win over Nik Lentz. Submission of the night was Joe Lauzon’s kimura over Curt Warburton.

Em dois momentos seguidos, Kongo foi quase eliminado. A impressão era de que o árbitro interromperia o combate a qualquer instante. Fez bem em prosseguir, pois o francês se ergueu e, com dois socos, deu o troco fatal em Barry, que acabou nocauteado.

Merecido, Kongo faturou a premiação de 50 mil dólares pelo nocaute da noite.

Como não poderia deixar de ser, o nocaute da noite foi para Cheick Kongo contra Patrick Barry. Depois de quase ser nocauteado duas vezes, Kongo ressuscitou com um soco certeiro e derrubou Barry. Já a melhor luta da noite foi para Charles do Bronx na vitória contra Nik Lentz. A finalização ficou com a Kimura de Joe Lauzon em Curt Warburton.

Against Nik Lentz, Charles do Bronx brought his win tally in MMA to eight. At least for now, since the fight this Sunday at UFC on Versus 4 may get its outcome overturned. This is because, just before sinking the fight-ending choke hold, Charles landed a knee to the face of his opponent who had three limbs touching the ground. Regardless of what the Athletic Commission decides, Bronx and his coach Ericson Cardozo explain the case and do not agree that a no contest should be declared.

“We’ll find out about the commission decision later or tomorrow. There was an illegal knee, but the ref didn’t see it. He could have stopped the fight and discounted a point from Charles, but he let it continue. So the ref is the one who made the mistake. I don’t feel it would be fair to change the result,” opines Ericson.

“You know me, I didn’t do it out of meanness. It happened in the heat of the fight and I asked forgiveness from him and everyone. I feel what determined the fight was the rear-naked choke, I didn’t knock him out with the knee. He kept coming at my leg and I managed to finish. Now I’m waiting on the decision,” Charles told GRACIEMAG.com, before emphasizing that the knee didn’t facilitate his winning.

“Like I said, the knee was not decisive. It caught him in the eye and he kept coming at my legs.”

On the fight:

“In the first round I’d gotten a knockdown on him; he was really tired and I was fine. I trained hard for this fight to recover from my last loss, and unfortunately this happened,” he said in closing.

Na luta contra Nik Lentz, Charles do Bronx alcançou a oitava finalização no MMA. Pelo menos até agora, pois a luta, no UFC on Versus 4, neste domingo, pode ter o resultado modificado. Isso porque, pouco antes de finalizar, Charles acertou uma joelhada ilegal no oponente, que estava com três apoios no chão. Independentemente da decisão da Comissão Atlética, Bronx e o treinador Ericson Cardozo explicam o caso e não concordam com a opção de no contest.

“Deveremos saber a resolução da comissão mais tarde no quarto ou apenas amanhã de manhã. Houve a joelhada ilegal, mas o juiz não viu. Ele poderia ter parado a luta e tirado um ponto do Charles, mas ele continuou. Então o erro foi do juiz. Não acredito e nem acho que seria justo uma mudança de resultado”, opina Ericson.

“Você me conhece, não fiz por maldade. Aconteceu no calor da luta e já pedi desculpas a ele e a todos. Acho que o que definiu foi o mata-leão, eu não nocauteei ele com a joelhada. Ele continuou vindo na minha perna e eu consegui finalizar, agora aguardo a decisão”, diz Charles ao GRACIEMAG.com, antes de reforçar que a joelhada não teria facilitado seu caminho para o triunfo.

“Como disse, a joelhada não foi definitiva. O golpe acertou no olho dele e ele continuou vindo nas minhas pernas.”

Sobre a luta:

“No primeiro round já havia dado um knockdown nele, ele estava bem cansado e eu muito bem. Treinei muito para este combate, para me recuperar da última derrota, e infelizmente aconteceu isso”, encerra.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu da Ataque Duplo, em Florianópolis, Thiago Tavares encara Shane Roller no próximo desafio. A luta acontece no UFC On Versus 3, no dia 3 de março. Em conversa com o GRACIEMAG.com, o peso leve fala sobre o combate e analisa a chegada da tropa do WEC no Ultimate, depois da fusão entre as organizações, além das acrobacias do campeão Anthony Pettis.

Fale do seu adversário, o Shane Roller…

É um cara bom, vem do wrestling e foi três vezes All American. Além disso, tem títulos na luta de chão, como no Grapplers Quest. Isso dá também uma experiência de Jiu-Jitsu para ele. Em pé, acho que ele oscila muito. Ele me impressionou contra o Ben Henderson, mas depois o vi deixando a desejar contra outros caras. Então, nesse quesito fica uma incógnita para mim: ele troca em pé como contra o Henderson ou como nas outras lutas que vi? Mas, na verdade, ele busca levar a luta para o chão, pela sua qualidade em derrubar. Isso também não significa nada. Não sei qual a qualificação que usam, mas parece que todo wrestler já foi All American. Enfim, acho que ele vai buscar a luta no chão e já enfrentei outros bons wrestlers.

Como analisa a chegada de tantos novos atletas no peso leve, com a fusão com o WEC?

Vejo o nível cada vez mais competitivo. No WEC era um pouco abaixo do UFC, mas com exceções, lutadores como Ben Henderson, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone e o próprio Shane Roller. São caras que têm o que dar. Então vai complicar cada vez mais. Jamie Varner ia lutar no UFC e não vai mais… Acho que agora o leve tem uma lista no UFC de 64 pessoas, então muita gente vai dançar. Espero que não seja eu!

O Pettis chega como campeão de leves do WEC e vai ter a chance pelo cinturão do UFC na primeira oportunidade. Ele tem chance? O que achou daquele chute incrível dele contra o Henderson (veja aqui)?

O Pettis, assim como o Ben Henderson, vai chegar forte no UFC. Eles têm condições de pegar o cinturão. O Pettis tem muitas qualidades. Essas coisas de acrobacia dependem da ocasião. Percebo que o Pettis, nos últimos segundos de cada round, apronta alguma. Ele pode até tentar fazer isso no UFC, mas, por mais que ele seja um grande lutador, não vai conseguir fazer com tanta frequência.

Como seguir nessa dura categoria e chegar perto do cinturão?

Tenho que dar o meu melhor. Fiz lutas que me apresentei bem, outras não. Tenho que me concentrar. Me sinto muito forte nessa categoria e tenho muitas qualidades. O que interessa é ficar ali dentro e vou me focar para fazer o melhor.

A Jiu-Jitsu black belt on team Ataque Duplo in Florianópolis, Brazil, Thiago Tavares has Shane Roller ahead of him as his next challenge, coming up at UFC Versus 3 on March 3. In a conversation with GRACIEMAG.com, the lightweight speaks of the matchup and offers his breakdown of the new troop coming into the UFC from the WEC following the fusion of the two events and discusses the acrobatics of Anthony Pettis, the champion of the now-defunct event.

Here’s what he had to say:

Tell us about your opponent, Shane Roller…

He’s good, comes from a wrestling background and is a three-time All American. Besides that, he holds Grapplers Quest titles. That means he’s also seasoned in Jiu-Jitsu. Standing, I feel he’s inconsistent. He impressed me against Ben Henderson, but after that I felt he was lacking against other guys. So I don’t know what to expect from him there: will he fight standing like he did against Henderson or like he did against the other guys I saw him against? But the truth is I feel he’ll look to take it to the ground, given the quality of his takedowns. That doesn’t mean anything either. I don’t know what qualifiers they use, but it seems like all the wrestlers were All American. So I figure he’ll try to take it to the ground and I’ve faced other good wrestlers before.

What are your thoughts on the new lightweights coming into the UFC from the WEC?

The level is just getting more and more competitive. The WEC was a little below the UFC, with some exceptions, like Ben Henderson, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, and Shane Roller himself. Those guys bring it on. So things will get even more complicated. Jamie Varner was going to fight in the UFC but isn’t anymore… I think the UFC has a roster of sixty-four lightweights now, so there will be a lot of heads rolling. I hope I won’t be one of them!

Pettis joins the fray as the champion of the WEC and will get a shot at the UFC belt in his next outing. Does he have a chance? What did you think of that incredible kick he landed on Henderson (watch here)?

Pettis, like Ben Henderson, is coming into the UFC strong. He has what it takes to snatch the belt. Pettis has a lot of quality about him. These acrobatics depend on the occasion. I’ve noticed that Pettis goes for things in the final seconds of each round. He may very well try that in the UFC, but as great a fighter as he is, he won’t be able to land those too often.

What will it take to move up the ranks in such a stacked division and get near a title shot?

I have to give it my best. I had fights were I had good showings, others where I didn’t. I have to concentrate. I feel really strong in this division and I have a lot of qualities. What matters is staying in the mix, and I’m going to focus on doing my best.
