Kongo was nearly eliminated in two consecutive moments. It looked like the ref was going to jump in at any moment. He did well to let it play out, though, as the Frenchman found his feet and, with two thudding fists, struck back at Barry, who collapsed unconscious.

Deservedly, Kongo took the 50,000 dollar knockout of the night bonus.

As anyone who watched could imagine, the knockout of the night bonus went to Cheick Kongo, who after nearly getting knocked out by Patrick Barry twice, struck back with an uppercut on the button and stuck an exclamation point at the end of a thrilling encounter. Now the fight of the night went to Charles do Bronx’s win over Nik Lentz. Submission of the night was Joe Lauzon’s kimura over Curt Warburton.

Em dois momentos seguidos, Kongo foi quase eliminado. A impressão era de que o árbitro interromperia o combate a qualquer instante. Fez bem em prosseguir, pois o francês se ergueu e, com dois socos, deu o troco fatal em Barry, que acabou nocauteado.

Merecido, Kongo faturou a premiação de 50 mil dólares pelo nocaute da noite.

Como não poderia deixar de ser, o nocaute da noite foi para Cheick Kongo contra Patrick Barry. Depois de quase ser nocauteado duas vezes, Kongo ressuscitou com um soco certeiro e derrubou Barry. Já a melhor luta da noite foi para Charles do Bronx na vitória contra Nik Lentz. A finalização ficou com a Kimura de Joe Lauzon em Curt Warburton.

Against Nik Lentz, Charles do Bronx brought his win tally in MMA to eight. At least for now, since the fight this Sunday at UFC on Versus 4 may get its outcome overturned. This is because, just before sinking the fight-ending choke hold, Charles landed a knee to the face of his opponent who had three limbs touching the ground. Regardless of what the Athletic Commission decides, Bronx and his coach Ericson Cardozo explain the case and do not agree that a no contest should be declared.

“We’ll find out about the commission decision later or tomorrow. There was an illegal knee, but the ref didn’t see it. He could have stopped the fight and discounted a point from Charles, but he let it continue. So the ref is the one who made the mistake. I don’t feel it would be fair to change the result,” opines Ericson.

“You know me, I didn’t do it out of meanness. It happened in the heat of the fight and I asked forgiveness from him and everyone. I feel what determined the fight was the rear-naked choke, I didn’t knock him out with the knee. He kept coming at my leg and I managed to finish. Now I’m waiting on the decision,” Charles told GRACIEMAG.com, before emphasizing that the knee didn’t facilitate his winning.

“Like I said, the knee was not decisive. It caught him in the eye and he kept coming at my legs.”

On the fight:

“In the first round I’d gotten a knockdown on him; he was really tired and I was fine. I trained hard for this fight to recover from my last loss, and unfortunately this happened,” he said in closing.

This Sunday’s UFC on Versus show in Pennsylvania served up plenty of action and a few surprises. Not even Nate Marquardt’s last minute withdrawal due to failed medical exams that cost him his job set the show back.

In the main event, Cheick Kongo pulled a surprise knockout on Patrick Berry. Patrick came close to ending the action earlier with two knockdowns, but Kongo kept alive. Swimming against the tide, he landed the fight-ending strike that dropped his victim to the canvas unconscious in the first round.

Local fighter Charlie Brenneman filled in for Marquardt at the last minute against Rick Story and snapped the favorite’s six-fight winning streak. Brenneman landed solid takedowns throughout the three rounds and connected with solid strikes. Story, who in his last fight beat Thiago Pitbull, tried to launch a comeback in the third round, but he was unable to get enough pressure behind an inverted triangle and ended up losing.

Matt Brown was coming off three losses and another would surely cost him his job. However, he saw the better of the action against John Howard, showing better striking and Jiu-Jitsu over three rounds, winning the unanimous decision.

Now Matt Mitrione remains unbeaten in his five-fight career. His knockout over Christian Morecraft came in the second round without much difficult. In the prelims, Tyson Griffin was coming off three back-to-back losses but managed to pull out a unanimous decision win over Manny Gamburyan.

Also on the undercard, Charles do Bronx put the brakes on Nik Lentz’s 14-fight win streak. However, just before finishing with a rear-naked choke, Charles landed an illegal knee to Lentz’s face. That being the case, it could be that the Athletic Commission overturns the Jiu-Jitsu brown belt’s win.

Na luta contra Nik Lentz, Charles do Bronx alcançou a oitava finalização no MMA. Pelo menos até agora, pois a luta, no UFC on Versus 4, neste domingo, pode ter o resultado modificado. Isso porque, pouco antes de finalizar, Charles acertou uma joelhada ilegal no oponente, que estava com três apoios no chão. Independentemente da decisão da Comissão Atlética, Bronx e o treinador Ericson Cardozo explicam o caso e não concordam com a opção de no contest.

“Deveremos saber a resolução da comissão mais tarde no quarto ou apenas amanhã de manhã. Houve a joelhada ilegal, mas o juiz não viu. Ele poderia ter parado a luta e tirado um ponto do Charles, mas ele continuou. Então o erro foi do juiz. Não acredito e nem acho que seria justo uma mudança de resultado”, opina Ericson.

“Você me conhece, não fiz por maldade. Aconteceu no calor da luta e já pedi desculpas a ele e a todos. Acho que o que definiu foi o mata-leão, eu não nocauteei ele com a joelhada. Ele continuou vindo na minha perna e eu consegui finalizar, agora aguardo a decisão”, diz Charles ao GRACIEMAG.com, antes de reforçar que a joelhada não teria facilitado seu caminho para o triunfo.

“Como disse, a joelhada não foi definitiva. O golpe acertou no olho dele e ele continuou vindo nas minhas pernas.”

Sobre a luta:

“No primeiro round já havia dado um knockdown nele, ele estava bem cansado e eu muito bem. Treinei muito para este combate, para me recuperar da última derrota, e infelizmente aconteceu isso”, encerra.

A noite no UFC on Versus, neste domingo, na Pennsylvania, contou com muita ação e algumas surpresas. Nem mesmo a saída de Nate Maquardt do card, reprovado nos exames médicos antes do evento, fato que custou a demissão do lutador, diminuiu o show.

No combate principal, um nocaute surpreendente de Cheick Kongo contra Patrick Barry. Patrick chegou muito perto de definir, com dois knockdowns, mas Kongo mostrou que ainda estava vivo. Aos trancos e barrancos, aplicou um upper definitivo contra o oponente, que caiu desacordado.

Lutador local, Charlie Brenneman substituiu Marquardt na luta contra Rick Story e interrompeu a série de seis vitórias do favorito. Brenneman conseguiu aplicar boas quedas nos três rounds e conectou bons socos. Story, que derrotara na última apresentação Thiago Pitbull, tentou reagir na terceira parcial, mas não conseguiu botar pressão quando encaixou um triângulo invertido.

Matt Brown vinha numa série de três derrotas e mais uma certamente custaria o emprego. No entanto, contra John Howard, foi melhor nos três rounds, tendo apresentado boa trocação e Jiu-Jitsu. O triunfo foi por decisão unânime.

Já Matt Mitrione segue invicto – cinco lutas . O nocaute contra Christian Morecraft veio no segundo assalto, sem tanta dificuldade. Nas preliminares, Tyson Griffin também não vinha bem, numa série de três derrotas. A volta por cima veio contra Manny Gamburyan em decisão unânime.

Também no card preliminar, Charles do Bronx parou Nik Lentz, que vinha numa sequência de 14 triunfos. No entanto, pouco antes de finalizar com um mata-leão, Charles aplicou uma joelhada ilegal em Lentz. Sendo assim, o resultado ainda pode ser modificado pela Comissão Atlética. Por enquanto, vitória para o faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu.

In a recent GRACIEMAG.com interview with Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira, the UFC lightweight said he was awaiting word on his next challenge, he just didn’t know at what event it would be.

It won’t be at UFC Rio, as the fighter had hoped. But since what’s important is keeping busy, Charles will now face Nik Lentz at UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh.

The Jiu-Jitsu brown belt was riding a 14-fight win streak when a loss in his last outing to Jim Miller brought it to a halt, while Lentz (21w-3l-2d) hasn’t lost in four fights.
