This Sunday’s UFC on Versus show in Pennsylvania served up plenty of action and a few surprises. Not even Nate Marquardt’s last minute withdrawal due to failed medical exams that cost him his job set the show back.

In the main event, Cheick Kongo pulled a surprise knockout on Patrick Berry. Patrick came close to ending the action earlier with two knockdowns, but Kongo kept alive. Swimming against the tide, he landed the fight-ending strike that dropped his victim to the canvas unconscious in the first round.

Local fighter Charlie Brenneman filled in for Marquardt at the last minute against Rick Story and snapped the favorite’s six-fight winning streak. Brenneman landed solid takedowns throughout the three rounds and connected with solid strikes. Story, who in his last fight beat Thiago Pitbull, tried to launch a comeback in the third round, but he was unable to get enough pressure behind an inverted triangle and ended up losing.

Matt Brown was coming off three losses and another would surely cost him his job. However, he saw the better of the action against John Howard, showing better striking and Jiu-Jitsu over three rounds, winning the unanimous decision.

Now Matt Mitrione remains unbeaten in his five-fight career. His knockout over Christian Morecraft came in the second round without much difficult. In the prelims, Tyson Griffin was coming off three back-to-back losses but managed to pull out a unanimous decision win over Manny Gamburyan.

Also on the undercard, Charles do Bronx put the brakes on Nik Lentz’s 14-fight win streak. However, just before finishing with a rear-naked choke, Charles landed an illegal knee to Lentz’s face. That being the case, it could be that the Athletic Commission overturns the Jiu-Jitsu brown belt’s win.

Complete results:

Cheick Kongo defeated Patrick Barry via KO at 2:39 min of R1;
Charlie Brenneman defeated Rick Story via unanimous decision;
Matt Brown defeated John Howard via unanimous decision;
Matt Mitrione defeated Christian Morecraft via KO at 4:28 min of R2;
Tyson Griffin defeated Manny Gamburyan via unanimous decision;

Javier Vazquez defeated Joe Stevenson via unanimous decision;
Joe Lauzon finalizou Curt Warburton via kimura at 1:58 min of R1;
Rich Attonito defeated Daniel Roberts via unanimous decision;
Charles do Bronx Oliveira submitted Nik Lentz via rear-naked choke at 1:48 min of R2;
Ricardo Lamas defeated Matt Grice via TKO at 4:41 min of R1;
Michael Johnson defeated Edward Faaloloto TKO at 4:42 min of R1.

Undefeated with 13 fights under his belt, Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira faced adversity right from his start in MMA. With little experience and a lot lighter than his opponents, the underdog tapped three opponents in a row at the Predador FC Grand Prix of 2008. He submitted Jackson Pontes with a rear-naked choke, finished off Viscardi Andrade by technical knockout and did the same to beat Diego Braga. It’s worth noting that the three bouts all took place on the same night.

Not unaccustomed to challenges, the beast from the coastal São Paulo town of Guarujá also turned heads on his UFC debut, with the best submission of the night, a armbar from the triangle on Darren Elkins at UFC on Versus 2.

Charles adjusts the triangle to follow up with an armbar. Photo: Josh Hedges

Now the Jiu-Jitsu brown belt won’t back down on yet another mission. Charles was called on to substitute Matt Wiman – out with a broken arm – in the fight with Efrain Escudero at the September 15 UFC Fight Night 22 show in Texas. The news was confirmed by MMAWeekly.com.

Escudero is a handful and is coming off a sensational triumph over Dan Lauzon. But who could doubt the young Bronx’s abilities?

Place your bets…

With five wins and one disqualification loss in the UFC, Jon Jones has removed all doubt as to his capacity to become champion of the light heavyweight division. Against Vladimir Matyushenko this Sunday at UFC on Versus 2, Jones had a walk in the park.

“Truth is that I trained as hard as I could. I knew Vladimir would be a tough test, I just trained and things went well,” remarked the fighter.

At only 23 years of age, Jones is seeing the number of possibilities for him increase in the organization. His shot at the light heavyweight belt is getting closer and closer, but that’s not enough.

“I train really hard, and my goal is to become one of the best in the world, if not just the best in my weight division.”

Now there seem to be endless possibilities for matchups in the stacked division. But the fighter isn’t worried about that.

“Whoever the UFC puts in front of me, I’m ready. It may be a cliché, but Joe Silva’s the man, he does a great job and I’ll leave it (picking his opponent) up to him,” he said from within the octagon.
The post To Jones it’s not enough to be the best in his division first appeared on Graciemag.

Contra Vladimir Matyushenko, neste domingo, no UFC on Versus 2, Jones deu um passeio.

The post Para Jones, não basta ser o melhor na categoria first appeared on Graciemag.
