Weeks ago, on May 5, Alan Belcher took Brazilian fans by surprise when he put the brakes on Rousimar Toquinho’s Jiu-Jitsu on the cage canvas at UFC on Fox 3.

Besides neutralizing Toquinho’s attacks, the three-years-undefeated American launched an assault that ended with him winning a first-round technical knockout. Around snack bars and Jiu-Jitsu schools, Belcher’s defenses still echo, and GRACIEMAG.com thought it would be right to revisit the subject.

In the video below, the very Belcher himself demonstrates new tricks to defending the Dreams heelhook with the aid of 50/50 guard.

As the UFC middleweight explains, the important part is to fasten the figure-four and hide the other foot behind the opponent’s back. Furthermore, you’ll need to clutch the opponent to you and pull his elbow. Watch the video to better grasp his explanation.

Semanas atrás, no dia 5 de maio, Alan Belcher surpreendeu os fãs brasileiros ao brecar o Jiu-Jitsu de Rousimar Toquinho, na lona do UFC on Fox 3.

Além de neutralizar os ataques, o americano, invicto há três anos, foi para cima e chegou ao nocaute técnico no primeiro round. Nas lanchonetes e escolas de Jiu-Jitsu, a defesa de Belcher ainda ecoa, e o GRACIEMAG.com achou por bem retomar o assunto.

No vídeo abaixo, o próprio Belcher mostra novos macetes para defender a temida chave de calcanhar, com o auxílio da guarda 50/50.

Mas como ele foi capaz de impedir que o lutador brasileiro aplicasse suas habilidades no chão? O GRACIEMAG.com, através do nosso colaborador Diego Marcello, foi atrás do treinador do americano, o bicampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu Daniel Moraes, da equipe Gracie Ilha:

Qual foi o segredo de Alan Belcher no UFC on Fox 3?

O segredo foi estudar muito as chaves e os detalhes de encaixe do Toquinho. Em cima disso trabalhamos duro em defesas, em como prevenir as investidas dele. Foram muitas horas de treinos específicos para esse tipo de situação, desenvolvemos várias táticas e defesas especialmente para o tipo de ataque do Toquinho. Contamos com a grande ajuda do campeão do ADCC Dean Lister e a revelação do Jiu-Jitsu Davi Ramos, ambos especialistas em chave de pé. Eles foram fundamentais para colocarmos nossas defesas em prática e deixar o Alan confortável, e mais, confiante para se defender e vencer a luta.

Como foi a reação de vocês quando souberam que teriam de treinar Belcher para o Toquinho?

Meu irmão Diego estava na academia do Belcher quando ofereceram a luta. O UFC deu a opção entre enfrentar o Toquinho ou o (Chris) Weidman. Eu e Diego preferimos o Weidman, até porque gostamos muito do Rousimar, mas também sabíamos que ele é um dos lutadores mais perigosos do UFC. No fim, por opção da equipe e do Alan, aceitaram o Toquinho, por estar melhor ranqueado. Também porque acreditaram no meus treinos de Jiu-Jitsu para parar o Toquinho. Foram quase três meses de preparação e tudo deu certo.

A estratégia funcionou como no plano inicial?

Na verdade a estratégia era manter a luta em pé. Apesar de ser faixa-preta, Alan sabia do perigo de deixar a luta rolar no chão, mas ele é tão talentoso e estava tão confiante que aceitou a luta franca no solo, e quase finalizou. Ele usou nossas defesas e acabou a luta no ground and pound, quando poderia ter ficado em pé e a luta poderia mudar de rumo. Na verdade, o Belcher usou o Jiu-Jitsu contra o Jiu-Jitsu.

Qual sua próxima tarefa?

Agora é treinarmos para melhorar algumas falhas, vamos treinar bastante e esperar a próxima luta. Estão falando de Belcher enfrentar o vencedor do Vitor Belfort e Wanderlei Silva, ou o Michael Bisping, acredito que qualquer vitória sobre esses atletas credencia o Alan a disputar o cinturão. Mas isso só o UFC pode nos dizer, né? (Risos). Forte abraço da Família Team Moraes!

Bem, é muito comum ver as pessoas tentando ficar em pé e chutar para sair da chave de calcanhar. Esse é um dos maiores erros que você pode cometer, a melhor maneira para defender a chave de calcanhar é saber o princípio básico, saber para onde girar e manter a calma para usar a defesa certa. Alan Belcher shushed any naysayers when he quashed Rousimar Toquinho’s leglock attempts at UFC on Fox 3 last Saturday. But just how was it that he managed to put a damper on the Brazilian’s ground skills? GRACIEMAG.com, via our contributor Diego Marcello, hunted down the American middleweight’s trainer, two-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion Daniel Moraes of Gracie Ilha team:

WHAT WAS THE SECRET TO ALAN BELCHER’S WIN AT UFC ON FOX 3?

The secret was in putting a lot of study into inner workings of the holds Toquinho uses. From there we did a lot of hard work in drumming up defenses, to prevent him from having his way. We did hours upon hours of specific training for such situations. We developed a variety of different tactics and defenses especially for the types of attacks Toquinho does. We had great help form ADCC champion Dean Lister and Jiu-Jitsu revelation Davi Ramos, both of whom are specialists in footlocks. They were fundamental for us to put our defenses to practice and keep Alan confident and comfortable to defend and win the fight.

WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU FOUND OUT YOU HAD TO TRAIN BELCHER TO FACE TOQUINHO?

My brother Diego was at Belcher’s academy when they offered him the fight. The UFC offered the choice between [Chris] Weidman or Toquinho. Diego and I were more keen on Weidman, if just because we really like Rousimar, but also because we knew he is one of the most dangerous fighters in the UFC. In the end Alan’s team went with Toquinho because he’s higher ranked. They also believed in my Jiu-Jitsu to put the brakes on Toquinho. We did nearly three months of prep work.

DID THE STRATEGY WORK ACCORDING TO THE INITIAL PLAN?

Truth is, our strategy was to keep it standing. Even though Alan’s a black belt, he knew of the dangers of keeping the fight on the ground, but he’s so talented and was so confident that he went for the straight-out ground fight, and he nearly got the submission. He used our defenses and ended the fight with ground and pound, when he could have gotten up and the fight would have taken a different turn. The truth is that Belcher used Jiu-Jitsu against Jiu-Jitsu.

WHAT’S THE NEXT MISSION?

Now we’re working on some flaws, training a lot and waiting for the next fight. They’re saying he’ll face the winner of Vitor versus Wand, or Bisping. I feel a win over any of those athletes will qualify Alan to challenge for the title, but that’s up to the UFC to tell us, right (laughs)? Best wishes from the Team Moraes family.

Well, it’s really common for people to try and stand and kick to escape the heelhook. That’s one of the worst mistakes you can make. Desire, strength and a whole lot of pressure—those are the main attributes of Jiu-Jitsu black belt Rousimar “Toquinho”, otherwise known as “Paul Harris”. The former cowboy with a penchant for leglocks, be them heelhooks or kneebars, rarely lets his prey escape the crippling holds.

As was brought up in GRACIEMAG issue 138, where a number of ADCC 2011 competitors put the BTT star under the microscope, his success in wielding the move comes down to force and positioning. Endowed with a T-shaped plate of pectoral muscles, Toquinho fits the enemy foot under his torso, his legs helping to adjust the position, while his torsion technique takes care of the rest.
