Após a participação no card principal do UFC on Fox 2, sábado, o faixa-preta paulista, em bate-papo com o GRACIEMAG.com, reconheceu suas falhas. A seguir, Demian Maia fala de tática, aponta seus erros e lições após a derrota por decisão dos jurados para o duro novato Chris Weidman, wrestler invicto e que também lutou o ADCC.

Excesso de confiança em pé

“De fato eu acreditei muito na parte em pé, pois eu achava que estava rápido e com o soco forte, e poderia nocautear no boxe. Dessa confiança eu tracei minha estratégia, que na realidade nem foi a combinada com meus técnicos”, disse Demian. “Eu estava confiante e acreditei naquilo, por isso arrisquei. Era o que eu estava acreditando fielmente naquela hora”, admitiu o faixa-preta ao repórter Junior Samurai, lembrando que Weidman não era nenhum bobo no chão.

Pilhado em terminar o combate por nocaute, o campeão de Jiu-Jitsu acabou a luta sem a energia necessária para virar a luta.

“Eu estava muito bem para essa luta, estava muito bem preparado. Agora eu não sei se foi a adrenalina de querer muito nocautear, algo me tirou a energia”, completou Demian Maia.

Mirar a vitória, não apenas o nocaute

“A lição que eu tirei foi que tenho de lutar pensando apenas em vencer. Nessa luta, entrei para arriscar o nocaute e, depois de desequilibrá-lo em pé, ir para o chão e finalizar. Mas acho que tenho de começar a lutar pensando em ganhar, em ficar sempre em posição dominante, e não foi o que fiz. Entrei pensando em acabar logo com a luta, e isso me desgastou muito, e me atrapalhou. Eu tinha de ter lutado pensando em vencer, fosse como fosse. Porque eu já sabia que ele tinha me dado uma queda, então minha meta tinha de ser pontuar também, devolver a queda nele, como aliás eu sempre fiz”, lembrou o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu de Fabio Gurgel.

A chave de panturrilha, arma surpreendente do Jiu-Jitsu, teve seu momento de glória mundial no último sábado, com a finalização de Charles Oliveira “do Bronx” no último UFC on Fox, em Chicago.

É laçar, abraçar a cintura e finalizar

Jiu-Jitsu and ADCC 2007 star Demian Maia had a crack at the UFC middleweight title back in 2010, even racked up five back-to-back submission wins in the promotion.

Now after his participation in the main card at UFC on Fox 2 last Saturday, the Brazilian black belt had a chat with GRACIEMAG.com in which he recognized where he went wrong. Coming up, Demian Maia addresses his tactics and points out the mistakes he has identified and the lessons he has derived since dropping a unanimous decision to the tough young Chris Weidman, another ADCC alumnus.

OVERCONFIDENT STANDING

“I really put a lot of faith in my standup, since I felt quick and heavy handed, and thought I could knock him out boxing. I based my strategy on that confidence, which in fact wasn’t what I had agreed to do with my trainers,” said Demian. “I was confident and believed in it; that’s why I took that risk. That was my belief at that time,” he admitted to reporter Junior Samurai, while also remembering that Weidman is quite a piece of work on the ground himself.

Fired up to win the fight by knockout, the Jiu-Jitsu champ ended up running out of steam and unable to rally back.

“I was in great shape for this fight, really well prepared. Now I don’t know if it was the adrenaline from wanting the knockout too much; that could have sapped my energy,” Maia added.

TARGET VICTORY, NOT JUST THE KNOCKOUT

“The lesson I ended up learning was that all I should be thinking about is winning. In this fight, I went in dead set on getting the knockout and, after staggering him standing, getting him to the ground to finish him. But I think I have to start fighting with winning on my mind, fighting to always be in a dominant position, and that’s not what I did. I went in there thinking about ending the fight, and that wore me out a lot, hindered me. I should have fought thinking about winning, no matter what. Because I already knew he’d taken me down, so my goal should have been to score too, to get a takedown back on him, like I always used to do,” recalled the Fabio Gurgel black belt.

The calf crunch, a weapon of surprise in Jiu-Jitsu, finally had its moment in the sun last Saturday in Chicago, when Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira used one to swiftly bring his fight at UFC on Fox to a close.

Having overcome Michael Bisping, Chael Sonnen earned his right to challenge Anderson Silva for his middleweight belt for a second time. Sonnen will try to return the setback he suffered at UFC 117, when he ended up getting submitted late in the fifth round after thoroughly dominating the action leading up to that fateful moment.

Just after Sonnen won his fight last night, Silva took to Twitter:

“If you cannot understand that heaven should be within you, there is no point in searching for it above the clouds and beside the stars,” was the Spider’s enigmatic tweet.

Not long later he was more straightforward:

“As hard as I try, I am not the best, but I am capable of doing what so many think impossible. I’ll do my job like I always do. And above all, I will honor my team, my family, and my Brazil.”

The fight is being tipped to take place in São Paulo, Brazil.

That’s exactly what Charles do Bronx did this Saturday in Chicago at UFC on Fox 2. Having attempted ankle and knee attacks, Charles went on to sink a calf crunch.

The submission hold so unusual in MMA caught Eric Wisely in full. Of his three wins within the ranks of the UFC, all three cam by submission. Not only that, it is the third time he earns the submission-of-the-night bonus, this time amounting to 65,000 dollars.

Knockout of the night honors went to Lavar Johnson for his dispatch of Joey Beltran. Now the fight of the night was Evan Dunham’s win over Nik Lentz.

Com o triunfo sobre Michael Bisping, Chael Sonnen ganhou o direito de enfrentar novamente Anderson Silva na disputa de cinturão da categoria de médios. Sonnen vai tentar devolver o revés que sofreu no UFC 117, quando acabou finalizado.

Logo após à vitória de Sonnen, Silva tratou de disparar através do seu Twitter:

“Se não consegues entender que o céu deve estar dentro de ti, é inútil buscá-lo acima das nuvens e ao lado das estrelas”, postou, enigmático.

Logo em seguida, foi mais direto:

“Por mais que tente, não sou o melhor, mas sou capaz de fazer aquilo que muitos acham impossível. Vou fazer meu trabalho como sempre faço. E acima de tudo, vou honrar a minha equipe, a minha família, o meu Brasil .”

Foi exatamente o que fez Charles do Bronx no UFC on Fox 2, neste sábado, em Chicago. Depois de tentar atacar tornozelo e joelho, Charles avançou para a chave de panturrilha.

A finalização, atípica nas lutas de MMA, pegou em cheio Eric Wisely. Com três finalizações nas três vitórias no UFC, esta é a terceira vez que Charles fatura o prêmio da noite, desta vez no valor de 65 mil dólares.

O melhor nocaute foi o de Lavar Johnson sobre Joey Beltran. Já a melhor luta foi a vitória de Evan Dunham sobre Nik Lentz.

O UFC on Fox 2 definiu bastante coisa na noite deste sábado, em Chicago. Por exemplo, Chael Sonnen vai ter a oportunidade contra Anderson Silva, provavelmente no Brasil, em São Paulo. Já o ex-campeão de meio-pesados Rashad Evans agora encara Jon Jones na tentativa de reaver o título. A luta acontece no UFC 145, no dia 21 de abril, em Atlanta.

Mas o GRACIEMAG.com é, acima de tudo, um site de Jiu-Jitsu. Vamos entender, então, como a arte suave foi fundamental na noite de lutas.

Crucifixo oportuno

Sem lutar desde agosto do ano passado, Rashad Evans não estava no ritmo ideal dentro do octagon. Por isso, usou os recursos certos. Se sua principal habilidade é derrubar, quedou Davis. No chão, utilizou diversas vezes o crucifixo. Enquanto travava os braços do oponente com as pernas e abria vantagem com socos, aproveitava para cansar o adversário e descansar. Rashad sobreviveu bem aos cinco rounds, e venceu por decisão unânime.

A movimentação de Sonnen

Contra Michael Bisping, Sonnen usou bem a arte suave, modalidade que já criticou severamente. Chael não fugiu da sua característica e buscou sempre derrubar. Mas também mostrou boa movimentação no chão, o que o fez abrir vantagem. Na apresentação anterior, contra Brian Stann, Sonnen finalizou com um estrangulamento. Dessa vez arriscou montadas e pegou as costas. Com a decisão unânime a seu favor, agora poderá ter a revanche contra Anderson Silva. Quando os dois se enfrentaram, ironicamente, a casa de Chael caiu após um justo triângulo. Enfim, finalmente ele entendeu a importância de se saber lutar no solo.

Faltou Jiu-Jitsu

Quando Demian Maia abusava da sua maior força, foram cinco finalizações seguidas no UFC. Contra Chris Weidman, Demian novamente insistiu na trocação. Quando quedado, parecia não ter mais os ataques de guarda tão afiados, e preferia voltar a lutar em pé. Resultado, o revés por decisão dividia.

Fator surpresa

Jon Olav Einemo vinha com a fama de já ter derrotado o tricampeão mundial absoluto Roger Gracie numa luta de chão. Mas Einemo não contava que Mike Russow estivesse treinando o quesito com o bicampeão mundial absoluto Rodrigo Comprido. Russow quedou e anulou o chão de Olav, sem sofrer muito perigo. Vitória por decisão unânime para o policial de Chicago.

O melhor da noite no Jiu-Jitsu

Sim, no Jiu-Jitsu Charles do Bronx foi o melhor do UFC on Fox 2. Uma chave de panturrilha, a 1min43s de luta, fez Eric Wisely dar os três tapinhas. Além do triunfo na estreia entre os pesos penas, Bronx faturou pela terceira vez o prêmio de finalização da noite.

Fechamento tenso na maior revista de Jiu-Jitsu do planeta. O Editor-Chefe de GRACIEMAG pede para o Estagiário ajudar na revisão do Plano de Aula, com técnicas de guarda ensinadas por Bruninho Frazatto, enquanto a equipe fecha a capa, que por sinal está linda.

“Agora não dá”, diz o novato, sacudindo a mão. “Isso aqui é sério. Estou me concentrando para vislumbrar se vai dar Demian ou Weidman”. E se pôs a esfregar a testa, de olhos fechados. Tomou na hora um tapão no boné, que voou longe. Nada que o abalasse em tão importante missão.

Dez segundos depois, veio correndo babando com a língua para fora e entregou seus palpites completos, escritos num guardanapo do Bibi Sucos.

It’s been tense going to press for the greatest Jiu-Jitsu magazine on the planet. The GRACIEMAG editor-in-chief asks the trainee to help out in revising Training Program of the month, with guard techniques taught by Bruno Frazatto, while the team got to wrapping up the cover—which is a sight to behold, by the way.

“I can’t right now,” says the newbie, wagging a finger. “This here is serious. I’m concentrating to figure out who’s going to take it—Demian or Weidman.” And he starts rubbing his forehead, his eyes shut tight. His baseball cap gets slapped off his head and goes whizzing through the air right away. Not enough to distract him from such an important mission.

Ten seconds later, he bustles up, his tongue sticking out of the side of his mouth, to hand in his complete list of picks, scrawled on a Bibi Sucos snack bar napkin.

The alternative was to rip it up and watch him cry, or publish it and watch him cry… from joy. No one is so heartless on a Friday. So here go The Trainee’s Picks for UFC on Fox. Check them out if you have the courage, and send us in your own predictions, dear reader.

The year didn’t start off all too well for submission whiz Demian Maia but, between us, someone who likes living on easy street doesn’t go sticking his neck out at World Championships, ADCCs and UFCs.

In his first training session for UFC on Fox 2 of 2012, there was a power failure at the academy where he trains in Moema, São Paulo. Then he saw his opponent get switched out on him. And even before all that, he had to take on judo world champion Tiago Camilo, whose CV also includes an Olympic medal.

After finding out his date for the coming 28th will now be the undefeated Chris Weidman, a Matt Serra student with plenty of tapout talent of his own—and who steps in for Michael Bisping, who was pulled from fighting Maia to be matched with Chael Sonnen—, Demian spoke with GRACIEMAG.com.

“I’ve trained Jiu-Jitsu my entire life, so I’m ready to fight anyone who wants to do Jiu-Jitsu,” he said, further revealing that due to time constraints his training routine shouldn’t see any major modifications, “There’s no time to change much; it’s just around the corner—just a trifle or two, because the training plan’s been done already.” Demian holds eight career submissions in MMA to the young Weidman’s three.

JIU-JITSU, JUDO AND THE HARD TIME SWEEPING

Now that first training session of the new year kicked off with an interesting lesson, picked up from an unexpected and brief roll with a 2007 judo world champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist.

“Truth is, it was really quick; we’d lifted some weights at the gym and decided to roll. Which was great, since he has excellent base and I had a hard time getting the sweep,” recounted Demian. “And it was even better because I was coming off a strength workout and was tired, so I could get a sense of what his strength was like, since the strength of judokas, wrestlers and Jiu-Jitsu players all feel different. The direction and feel his strength had, perhaps from the angle he’d hold each position, were really different; so it was cool to realize that.
