How do you manage to forget about UFC 148 and the last “fight of the century”, in that already distant first weekend of July? One of the ways is by putting the lessons learned on the paper and moving on. After all, we have more UFC this weekend, the UFC Rio with Jose Aldo vs Erik Koch is set for October 13, and much more.

Behold the most valuable of what we have learned with Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen.

1. THE TOUGHEST OPPONENT IS THE ONE WHO BRINGS MORE GLORY

At our daily Jiu-Jitsu training, we all tend to circumvent the toughest opponent, that mate who complicates your game the most. It is common practice, and even human, look for the most comfortable path. But it is the mate closest to your level that will make you develop your qualities and correct your mistakes. Anderson has almost taken this way, in UFC. He tried to avoid Chael Sonnen for many reasons. When the fight went on, Anderson had to overcome his own techniques. In the second round, he fought like a beast, avoided the lethal takedown by his archrival and defeated an enemy who gave him even more projection.

2. CLASS IN DEFEAT

Like Chael Sonnen said to Dana White in the locker room, losing a title fight in the UFC is not so bad: “If this were the Olympic games, it would be the silver medal, not bad”. Chael, who gave several lessons on how not to behave before the fight, has done what most fighters can’t do after being defeated: not giving any excuses.

3. JIU-JITSU IS MENTALLY BREAKING THE OPPONENT

What’s the use of mounting your opponent and letting him comfortable? Chael Sonnen and Anderson have proven to us, at UFC 148, that Jiu-Jitsu is not only about being in the dominant position. But being in the position that most bothers, and hence mentally breaking the opponent. Smashing is all about it: make your opponent who desired the victory suddenly desires to run away from the mat.
The post 3 crucial Jiu-Jitsu lessons from Anderson Silva’s victory over Chael Sonnen in UFC first appeared on Graciemag.

Last July 7, Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen locked horns in the most heavily anticipated rematch of recent times. In the MGM Arena in Las Vegas, the American came out of his corner full throttle, taking the middleweight champ down and mounting him, in what looked like a perfect repeat of their first encounter, in August 2010. However…

The second round saw Anderson in perfect form. He thwarted Sonnen’s aggression, bobbed and weaved in spectacular fashion, and put an authoritative stop to the bout with a knee and punches. But what missing for Sonnen once he achieved the mount? And what did the Ramon Lemos-trained Anderson have going for him?

Students of Ramon’s and current world champions (light feather and featherweight, respectively), the brothers Guilherme and Rafael Mendes were in Vegas for the UFC and paid close attention to the fight. Hours later they even met up with Anderson Silva and congratulated him.

To bring the world of the UFC and MMA closer to the world of Jiu-Jitsu technique, we had a chat with them about Anderson’s triumph. The following are the highlights from the conversation:

Chael Sonnen’s mount

“Sonnen is really good at wrestling, and everyone knew he was going to try and take Anderson down and do the same thing he did the first time. He was quick in shooting on his legs, and as it’s a specialty of his, he got the takedown. We told Ramon how we felt Anderson did really well and was calm on bottom, defending himself well, and he was aware of when the round was going to end so he could start on his feet again.”

Anderson’s patience

“Anderson showed that he’d done his homework in training and was comfortable on bottom, because a lot of fighters get desperate in that position. Sonnen’s good there, and Anderson did well against him; Ramon Lemos deserves congratulations. The credit for the mount goes more to Sonnen. Anderson did everything just right; he didn’t get desperate, didn’t fold to the position in trying to escape (something really common in the UFC, didn’t leave any openings. By the time Sonnen mounted there wasn’t long left in the first round.”

Sonnen’s Jiu-Jitsu

“Our analysis of it is that Sonnen used good wrestling and could have used more Jiu-Jitsu. Now Anderson is to be congratulated, as he did swell when defending himself on the ground. In the second round, Sonnen tried to take Anderson down, but Anderson did great in defending the takedowns and imposed his pace. It was a great fight, and both did excellently. It was a pleasure to watch the fight live.”

What do Anderson Silva, Dan Henderson, Marcus Bochecha and Melvin Guillard have in common?

Recently, all of them won fights even after have been dominated and mounted. It’s a trend that is becoming all the more common, although perhaps meaningless, in the UFC; but one that has even reared its head at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, as with the case of Bochecha in his match against Rodolfo Vieira.

Bothered by the frequency of this occurrence, GRACIEMAG.com had a talk with Jiu-Jitsu black belt Fabricio “Morango” Camões, one of the latest to witness it up close, real close, at UFC 148.

“It’s truly frustrating when it happens to us,” said the Gracie Humaitá fighter after dropping a judges’ decision to Melvin Guillard.

The highlights of the conversation and Morango’s reflections follow:

1. ISSUE OF TIME IN MMA

“Everyone who steps into that octagon knows they’re going to do some things wrong and other things right, and they learn from their mistakes. My coaches were satisfied with my appearance; Melvin is one of the top dogs in that weight group and I did alright. I messed up some at the end of each round, like the spinning punch and spinning kick, and he capitalized on those mistakes. In the mount, I sensed that he was really prepared and savvy in defending. I feared time was running out and wasn’t sure whether I should drop bombs on him or go for his arm, and he capitalized on that to push my knee and shrimp out of the position. I’m going to fix that, because it’s frustrating when it happens to us; mounting is too good a position.

2. THE MOUNT AND A LESSON FROM RICKSON GRACIE

“I was talking to Rickson about Jiu-Jitsu and MMA one time, and he told me this: ‘When you get the mount in MMA, what’s important is to not let the position get away from you. You can’t digress; you have to maintain control of the guy, and after that you can naturally go on to end the fight.’ And if I hadn’t let him get out, eventually he’d have offered up an arm or turned his back, or at least I would have scored some points at the end of the round and maybe won the judges’ decision. I’m going to work on some finer details of my mount with Royler so I don’t let the position slip away again.”

3. THE TACTICS ISSUE

So we asked him whether everyone isn’t just a lot better prepared to defend these days, and whether black belts might be neglecting practicing the mount in training. Morango feels it’s more of a physical issue than a technical one: “You can see that Melvin never stopped for a moment. He was bridging the whole time, turning sideways to make room, and he was exploding to get out the whole time. Folks are really studying mount escapes a lot, mainly the athletes who know they might end up there. It’s a question of survival. And they’re strong and explosive enough to get out, but the key is really for us to not go off halfcocked and keep top position at all costs. The knockout or submission will come around naturally, I believe,” he said.

4. ISSUE OF THE JUDGES

“It really does seem to me that it’s becoming more and more common to see someone get the mount and still lose the fight, but there’s one side of the debate that bothers me. Could it be that the judges don’t understand just how valuable the mount is? Is the guy getting the mount scoring the points the position he achieved is worth? I don’t think so. You can even hear the crowd cheering more when a fighter escapes mount than when one tries for a submission or to mount. That falls under another question. The way I see it, the judges aren’t rewarding the one who gets in there looking to win and finish, but the one who’s in there not to lose. All the guy does is defend, doesn’t expose himself, doesn’t try for the takedown, and some judges fall for it. At UFC 148 the judges showed they were using different criteria, because my fight and Tibau’s were similar. If I lost, then Tibau won. Tito Ortiz got the takedown and took it to the ground, and the judges felt he lost. I feel that more and more they’re rewarding the ones who train to stall, the ones who train not to fight, and we’re left asking the question: Would it be better if we just trained not to expose ourselves, rather that train to get the submission or knockout, in the UFC?”
The post Jiu-Jitsu lessons from one who got the mount but lost in the UFC first appeared on Graciemag.

1. A questão do tempo no MMA

3. A questão técnica

The post As lições de Jiu-Jitsu de quem montou e perdeu no UFC first appeared on Graciemag.

Craque. Mito.

Anderson Silva fez e faz coisas inimagináveis no octógono.

Insistiram: — “Qual é o maior ponta do mundo?”.

2. Passando a meia-guarda

3. Relógio no Jiu-Jitsu

For the new MMA-fan universe, the only thing that mattered was whether Demian Maia would manage to win at UFC 148, where he made his welterweight debut against the game Dong Hyun Kim last weekend.

He himself seemed to be acutely aware of that and felt likewise. “Barring the title fight with Anderson [in 2010], this fight at UFC 148 was the most important to me. I needed to show my Jiu-Jitsu in the octagon; there was a lot at stake, and good thing it ended quickly,” said Demian Maia at the post-event press conference in Las Vegas.

GRACIEMAG.com applauds the performance of Demian Maia, who gave his opponent no wriggle room, managing the takedown and mount that resulted in his lightning-quick victory. But win or no win, it doesn’t in the least bit affect our appreciation for Demian, who is, above all, a superb Jiu-Jitsu professor.

On the pages of our magazine, spread throughout numerous issues, the black belt from São Paulo taught at least four or five useful details for basic Jiu-Jitsu. Details that work, whether on the mat or in the octagon.

1. Private lessons and Jiu-Jitsu

If you’ve been feeling like you’re stuck on a plateau, private lessons can open your eyes to a whole world of minor details capable of changing your game. If you’re higher ranked, offer to help your teacher with his private lessons. It’s an excellent way of learning, says Demian.

2. Passing half-guard

When you’re on top looking to pass half-guard, seek to press your opponent’s lower back against the ground. That way he’ll be all the more vulnerable. Without his lower back on the ground it’s easier for him to defend or surprise you.

Another minutiae that ends up helping him to not position himself sideways and hinder your pass: stick your foot, the foot of the leg caught in his half-guard, up against the opponent’s gluteal. That way his half-guard is more perpendicular to the ground, which means he can’t move much, and the laws of gravity will help you in pressuring in attack, freeing your leg and surmounting his guard.

3. Clocks in Jiu-Jitsu

When attacking with a clock choke, it’s common for beginners to telegraph that they’re going to grab the collar and try for the finish. Don’t go trying to stick an open hand in, as it’s easier for him to block you that way. The thing is to be quick and stick balled-up fist in when he least expects it. Once your fist passes under his chin, open your hand and get a firm grip on the collar.

4. Armbar and adjustment

With the armbar, remember to keep the opponent’s wrist flush up against your chest. Furthermore, keep his thumb pointed upwards.

Nós merecemos a revanche.

Comente abaixo.
The post Treinador de Sonnen agora quer anulação da luta com Anderson Silva no UFC 148 first appeared on Graciemag.

During the pre-UFC 148 open training session, Chael Sonnen left reporter Ariel Helwani all the more curious when he said Jiu-Jitsu legend Renzo Gracie had called him on the phone and set him straight, telling him, Chael, something that caused him to reflect and change his ways.

(Refresh your memory here.)

But what is it that Renzo told the challenger? GRACIEMAG.com went after the answer:

“I just told him that if he kept up that trash talking he would be taking away from the greatness of the task that he had ahead of him, he is fighting one of the best fighters of our generation, and people would lose the chance to know the real Sonnen, a great athlete who I saw young fighting hard back in the Japan days, building his career as a fierce fighter, a career that ended up turning him into one of the amazing people that populate our great sport,” Renzo said.

“I just asked him to behave with the greatness of a champion. Many fighters dream of that opportunity, to fight the best and test themselves in the toughest sport that existed. Be great, be bold, be fair, and above all be honest. Some will love you, others will hate you. But they will know who you really are. Fight this fight in a way that will be unforgettable to those who had the privilege to watch. I won’t miss a second of this great match,”, the Gracie said in conclusion.
The post What did Renzo Gracie tell Chael Sonnen on the phone before UFC 148? first appeared on Graciemag.
