Nunca tive tanto assunto quanto em 2012. Foi muito interessante ver meus dois temas favoritos – Direito e MMA – deixarem de ser restritos a grupos específicos e tornarem-se assunto do dia-a-dia dos brasileiros, graças ao julgamento do “Mensalão” e a consolidação do UFC no Brasil.

Não por acaso, Joaquim Barbosa e Anderson Silva foram algumas das personalidades mais comentadas do ano. Ambos proporcionaram ao cidadão brasileiro um enorme sentimento de desagravo e ufanismo. A atuação do Supremo Tribunal Federal foi tão ou mais satisfatória para a população quanto o nocaute técnico aplicado por Anderson no falastrão Chael Sonnen.

Silva aceitou a aguardada revanche e calou de vez o americano que havia ofendido não só seu adversário (com baixarias indignas de um verdadeiro artista marcial), mas todo o Brasil. O país parou para assistir ao UFC 148 e ouviram-se fogos de artifício após o evento, como se fosse uma final de futebol.

A popularidade do esporte foi tão intensa que o Brasil sediou três eventos do UFC em 2012. Em janeiro, o UFC 142 ou UFC Rio 2 contou com belas finalizações, o impressionante chute de Edson Barboza e uma cena antológica para o MMA nacional: a comemoração do campeão José Aldo após nocautear Chad Mendes na disputa do cinto dos penas. Aldo saiu do octógono, driblou os seguranças e, literalmente, foi para a galera, caindo nos braços de uma multidão enlouquecida. Isso é comemoração brasileira, Mr. Dana White.

Já o UFC 147, em Belo Horizonte, não teve um final tão feliz. O evento trazia a final do reality show “The Ultimate Fighter Brasil”, transmitido semanalmente na TV aberta e acompanhado pelo povão. Os lutadores Rony Jason, Cezar Mutante, Serginho Moraes, Tiago Bodão, Hugo Wolverine, Daniel Sarafian e Francisco Massaranduba caíram no gosto popular. Os técnicos Vitor Belfort e Wanderlei Silva dividiam torcidas e fariam a tão esperada revanche que os fãs antigos de MMA aguardavam desde 1998. Contudo, Belfort quebrou a mão às vésperas da luta e foi substituído no combate principal por Rich Franklin. Jason e Mutante sagraram-se vencedores do “TUF Brasil”, mas Wanderlei perdeu na decisão após quase nocautear Franklin no segundo round. O saldo do UFC BH foi agridoce.

Falando em reality shows, a presença do ex-jogador Ronaldo “Fenômeno” em quadro sobre perda de peso foi campeã de audiência em 2012. Um novo programa de preparação física também seria boa opção para Maurício “Shogun” Rua. O curitibano apresentou-se visivelmente fora de forma na vitória contra Brandon Vera (UFC on Fox 4) e na derrota para Alexander Gustafsson (UFC on Fox 5). Para fãs como eu, foi uma pena ver Shogun desperdiçando seu talento e valentia em combates nos quais estava sem fôlego logo após o primeiro round.

Veio então o UFC Rio 3 (UFC 153), para afastar qualquer sentimento desagradável da torcida brasileira. As lutas foram todas de alto nível, com direito a apresentações clássicas de Rodrigo Minotauro e Anderson Silva. O baiano Minota ressurgiu (mais uma vez) após a grave lesão no final de 2011 e levantou a massa ao finalizar Dave Herman com o mesmo Jiu-Jitsu eficiente que apresentava nos tempos do Pride. Já Anderson, sempre ele, relembrou sua luta contra Forrest Griffin ao proporcionar novo espetáculo na vitória contra Stephan Bonnar, na categoria de peso acima da que está acostumado a lutar. Baixou a guarda, esquivou-se à vontade, nocauteou e reafirmou-se como o grande gênio do esporte.

Se Anderson provou que um ícone deve fazer algo a mais do que apenas vencer, Jon Jones teve um ano apagado. Tido como o homem capaz de vencer o “Aranha”, o americano campeão meio-pesado apresentou-se de maneira burocrática nas vitórias contra Rashad Evans (UFC 145) e Vitor Belfort (UFC 152). Apesar de ser dominante em ambos os embates, venceu Evans na decisão dos jurados e quase foi finalizado no armlock por Belfort.

Novos reis

O ano de 2012 também foi o ano do aguardado retorno de GSP, em luta difícil contra Carlos Condit, e de novos campeões. Demetrious Johnson sagrou-se o primeiro detentor do cinturão da nova categoria peso mosca (até 56kg), ao vencer Joseph Benavidez no UFC 152. Ben Henderson precisou derrotar Frankie Edgar duas vezes (UFC 144 e UFC 150) para ser reconhecido definitivamente como campeão da disputada categoria dos leve (até 70 kg). Henderson ainda defendeu o suado título contra Nate Diaz no UFC on Fox 5, solidificando seu posto. E o brasileiro Renan Barão conquistou o cinturão interino da categoria galo (até 61kg) ao bater o eterno vice Urijah Faber, no UFC 149, na decisão. Naquele momento, o Brasil chegou a ter campeões em quatro das oito categorias de peso do maior evento de lutas do mundo. Domínio absoluto.

Adeus a Fedor

O filósofo Marshall Berman já dizia que tudo que é sólido desmancha no ar e a indigesta derrota de Júnior “Cigano” dos Santos, no último UFC do ano, retirou do Brasil o título do peso pesado. Após uma vitória tranqüila sobre Frank Mir no UFC 146, nosso Cigano concedeu a revanche a Cain Velasquez no UFC 155 e acabou sofrendo um duro castigo. Uma derrota para o excelente Velasquez não é demérito para ninguém e só o futuro dirá qual será o resultado de uma inevitável terceira luta entre eles.

Para os velhos admiradores, 2012 será lembrado ainda pela emocionante despedida da lenda russa Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor, que dominou a categoria peso pesado do MMA mundial, invicto de 2001 a 2010 (apesar de nunca ter lutado no UFC), brindou os fãs com um último nocaute sobre o também lendário Pedro Rizzo, sob o olhar admirado do Presidente Vladimir Putin. Anyone who thought Wanderlei Silva would sympathize with his old rival Vitor Belfort, who broke his hand one month away from their big fight on June 23 at UFC 147 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, doesn’t read CHOKE or doesn’t know the back story behind their unfriendly terms.

Via Twitter @Wandfc rubbed salt in Vitor’s wound, accusing him of being an amateur.

“If it’s really broken then he’s an amateur. If he didn’t break it, he chickened out. In either case it’s major disrespect and lack of responsibility to the public,” Wand fired over Twitter.

The former Chute Boxe rep didn’t take kindly to Belfort’s rebuttal that he could still take the fight with just one hand.

“With one hand? You’re a jackass. We’re professionals. It was way irresponsible not to be careful in training, a disrespect to the fans. I’m REALLY bummed about all this. I was ready to knock you out, but you have nowhere to run. This fight will have to happen, you can run all you like…”

Wanderlei didn’t buy Vitor’s assertion that the intensity at which he was training was the culprit for the injury.

“Nobody trains so hard to the point of hitting that hard; we use the best equipment, gloves, gel, wraps. I think you just wussed out. If you were so scared you shouldn’t have accepted the fight. What happens to everyone who got set back by all this? Anyone with real fans is concerned about them. I am, pardon my language, PISSED about how much of an amateur you are. The main event at the biggest show in the world and the guy pulls this on me. It’s intolerable, isn’t it? There’s no excuse.”

Vitor replied over Twitter with a calmer tone: “Emotional instability reveals a person’s fears. I’m grateful for all the kindness you all have had towards me. Confidence isn’t arrogance; I remain confident and maintain my respect for my opponent, since now my battle is with my injury. Remember one thing: everything passes, and what remains are the choices we make. Don’t be angry. Each to his own, but respect is an obligation everyone has. I ask that God give him double what he wishes on me. I’m out.”

Venom aside, now the aftermath is left to the UFC to contend with as well as the fans, many of whom already purchased tickets to watch the rematch that has been in the making since the first time the UFC touched down in Brazil, back in 1998, when Belfort served Wand a swift knockout.

Wand and the ultraheavyweight Mark Hunt had a thrilling encounter back on New Year’s 2005, when they did battle under the banner of the now extinct Pride FC promotion. On the occasion the Brazilian went from being predator to prey. To this day Wand feels he got shortchanged in the judges’ decision, and a rematch would likely get the fans going—but the New Zealander is out with a knee injury.

2. Wanderlei Silva vs Ricardo Arona

There’s been a grudge between them ever since they got into an argument over breakfast in Japan, where Ricardo Arona was one of Wand’s last five victims, having faced off in a tense and evenly-matched affair at a Pride event that was also held on New Year’s, but as the year turned forward to 2006. In the book “Filho teu não foge à luta” by Fellipe Awi, Wanderlei stoked the flames of rivalry even further: “Let’s just say I wan’t too polite that day. When we’re young we do things we wouldn’t do when we’re old, right?”

Arona has been out of action and not been training, but that never stopped him from fighting. The downside is that facing Wand was a personal craving of his, one Ricardo got to quell on two occasions. However, who knows, maybe a call straight to the UFC (not from journalists) could awaken his fighting instinct–that is if he’s still thinking about rekindling his career.

3. Wanderlei Silva vs Rich Franklin

Rich and Wand faced off back in 2009 at UFC 99, and the “w” went to the American. The former UFC champion is now set to take on Cung Le at UFC 148. Might he agree to take a little fight first, to get warmed up in the heat of the Brazilian crowd?

4. Wanderlei Silva vs Brian Stann

To the broader Brazilian audience the opponent may carry little appeal. To the hordes of pay-per-view purchasers and Wand himself it would be quite a challenge. And better still, it’s a matchup promising fireworks. A win would put Wand back in contention.

5. Wanderlei Silva vs Yushin Okami

A Japanes fighter in the opposing corner would be a flashback to the good old days of Pride FC, and it would also resound in the Land of the Rising Sun. And after all, Okami is familiar to Brazilian fans thanks to UFC Rio. Yoshihiro Akiyama would be another option, but he’s out injured.

Quem imaginou que Wanderlei Silva poderia se sensibilizar com o drama do rival Vitor Belfort, que quebrou a mão a um mês do UFC 147, dia 23 em Belo Horizonte, não lê a Revista NOCAUTE ou não conhece a fundo a rivalidade de ambos.

Pelo Twitter, @Wandfc bateu pesado no arquirrival, acusando Vitor de amadorismo.

“Se quebrou de verdade é muito amadorismo. Se não quebrou, arregou. Nas duas é muito desrespeito, falta de responsabilidade com o público”, postou Wand no Twitter.

O ex-chuteboxer não tolerou a declaração de Belfort, de que estava pronto para lutar com apenas uma das mãos.

“Com uma mão só? O senhor é um fanfarrão. Somos profissionais. Foi uma grande irresponsabilidade não ter cuidado nos treinos, um desrespeito com os fãs. Fiquei MUITO triste com tudo isso. Estou pronto pra te nocautear, mas não tem pra onde correr. Essa luta vai ter que acontecer, pode correr…”

Wanderlei não concordou com o argumento de Vitor de que a intensidade dos treinos teria sido a culpada pela lesão.

“Ninguém treina tão duro assim ao ponto de socar tão forte, nós usamos os melhores equipamentos, luva, gel, bandagem. Acho que amarelou pra mim mesmo. Se estava com medo, não tivesse aceitado a luta. Como ficam os principais prejudicados com isso? Quem tem (fãs) de verdade se preocupa com eles. Estou, com o perdão da palavra, PUTO com esse amadorismo. Um main event no maior show do mundo e o cara me dá uma dessas. Aí não dá, né? Não tem desculpa”.

Vitor rebateu também via Twitter com serenidade: “O desequilíbrio emocional de uma pessoa revela seus medos. Eu agradeço o carinho de todos vocês. Confiança não é arrogância, permaneço confiante e mantenho meu respeito com o meu adversário, pois agora minha luta é contra minha lesão. Lembre-se de uma coisa: tudo passa, e o que fica são as escolhas. Não tenham raiva. Cada um com o seu, mas respeito é um dever de todos. Peço a Deus que te dê em dobro aquilo que deseja para mim. Fui”.

Noves fora as provocações, a bananosa agora está com o UFC e com os fãs, muitos deles que já compraram ingresso para ver a revanche do UFC Brasil, realizado em 1998, quando Belfort nocauteou Wand.

Wand e o peso pesadíssimo Mark Hunt fizeram uma das mais excitantes lutas do extinto Pride, no Réveillon 2005, quando, pela primeira vez, o brasileiro passou de caçador à caça. Wand até hoje acha que foi garfado pela arbitragem, e a revanche seria um manjar para os fãs, mas o neozelandês está contundido, no joelho.

2. Wanderlei Silva vs Ricardo Arona

Velho desafeto graças a uma discussão durante um café da manhã no Japão, Ricardo Arona foi uma das últimas cinco vítimas de Wand, em luta tensa e parelha no Pride, também no réveillon, mas de 2005 para 2006. No livro de Fellipe Awi, “Filho teu não foge à luta”, aliás, Wanderlei a seu modo pôs uma pedra na rixa: “Digamos que eu não fui tão educado naquele dia. Quando se é novo, a gente faz coisas que não faria mais velho, né?”.

Arona está parado e pouco treinado, mas isso nunca o impediu de lutar. O ponto negativo mesmo é que encarar Wand era um desejo pessoal, que Ricardo já saciou duas vezes. No entanto, um telefonema direto do UFC (não o de jornalistas) poderia, quem sabe, despertar seus instintos, se ele ainda pensa em retomar a carreira.

A giant Dutchman who prefers submissions to knockouts? It even sounds odd, but that’s Stefan Struve, one of the winners of the best-submission bonus this Saturday night in Las Vegas, having pulled guard and coaxed the tapout from Lavar Johnson.

From atop his 2.10-meter frame, Struve has come by 16 of his 24 wins via submission. Now arriving at the six knockouts he has to his name, he did so by blending his grappling with striking, unlike other top Dutch fighters, like Alistair Overeem, for instance.

UFC 146 was an event to remember. Howver, the news that marked the evening had nothing to do with the riveting fights that brought the Las Vegas crowd to their feet this Saturday. UFC president Dana White broke word that the June 23 TUF Brazil-coach showdown between Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, has been scrapped, due to a broken hand suffered by Belfort in training.

Vitor kept mum until his boss made the announcement over Twitter before responding: “I still can’t believe what happened, bu that’s life; we have to overcome our hurdles. I’m counting on you guys. I can’t sleep, thinking about what happened. I’ve very sad, very sad, but I know I’ll be back even stronger,” he said.

White further stated that Wand will remain on the card; however, he hasn’t yet decided on an opponent. Got any suggestions for him, gentle reader?

It was a lively evening in Las Vegas. Of the 12 fights on the card at UFC 146 this Saturday, six ended with knockouts and three in submissions. That being the case, UFC president Dana White decided to contemplate what the public likes seeing most.

Two fighters earned the prize for best knockout: Roy Nelson’s swing for the fence on Dave Herman 51 seconds in; and Dan Hardy, who himself got a first-round knockout, on Duane Ludwig.

And two fighters benefited from the prize for best finish. On the main card, Stefan Struve sunk a sterling armbar from guard on Lavar Johnson, while Paul Sass took the bonus for his triangle on Jacob Volkmann.

Now “Fight of the Night” prize was awarded, perhaps because every bout on the card was sublime. Was White unable to make up his mind? Each bonus was worth an extra 70,000 dollars.

It wasn’t Frank Mir’s day. At UFC 146 this Saturday in Las Vegas, Junior Cigano was in fine form and successfully defended his belt for the first time after taking it from Cain Velasquez.

Cigano took the upper hand in round one, nearly coming up with the knockout as the round drew to a close. The second saw the Brazilian doing much of the same, landing solid punches throughout. Realizing Mir was in dire straights as he crumpled to the ground, he flurried with further punches, wrapping up the affair with 3:04 minutes on the clock. The triumph brings Cigano’s win tally to 15 and knockout count to 11 in his 16-fight career. What was the big lesson from Cigano? He knew how to steer clear of Mir’s greatest weapon, his Jiu-Jitsu, doing a fine job of defending takedowns.

Now Cain Velasquez returned to the cage on fire following his first-ever loss. Following up a takedown with a pinpoint elbow, he achieved the knockout while still in the first round. Meanwhile, Roy Nelson threw a haymaker that put Dave Herman out of commission right away after just 51 seconds of combat. Another sterling knockout came from Stipe Miocic, who remains unbeaten in his nine-fight career, putting an end to Shane Del Rosario’s 11-fight win streak.

But there was no lack of quality grappling on display by the heavyweights on the card. The lumbering Stefan Struve ended his encounter with Lavar Johnson via a sightly armbar just 1:05 minutes into their tilt, marking the Dutchman’s 16th submission win.

Among the standout performances, former WEC champ Jamie Varner TKO’d the until-then-undefeated Edson Barbosa in the first round, TUF season 14 winner Diego Brandão dropped a decision to Darren Elkins, and Glover Teixeira kicked off his UFC career on the right foot with a first-round arm-triangle win over Kyle Kingsbury.

Um gigante Holandês que prefere finalizações a nocautes? Pode até soar estranho, mas assim é Stefan Struve, que faturou o prêmio de melhor finalização na noite deste sábado, em Las Vegas, ao puxar para a guarda botar Lavar Johnson para dar os três tapinhas.

Do alto de seus 2,10m de altura, Struve venceu 16 dos seus 24 triunfos (cinco derrotas) por finalização. No entanto, na maior parte dos seus seis nocautes, chegou ao feito mesclando muito bem a luta de chão com a trocação, um estilo diferente dos demais lutadores holandeses de sucesso, como Alistair Overeem, por exemplo.

O UFC 146 foi um evento a ser lembrado. No entanto, a notícia que marcou a noite não tem nada a ver com as grandes lutas que embalaram o público em Las Vegas, neste sábado. Presidente do UFC, Dana White informou que caiu a luta entre Vitor Belfort e Wanderlei Silva, confronto entre os capitães do TUF Brasil, programado para 23 de junho, em Belo Horizonte. Belfort quebrou a mão durante os treinamentos.

Vitor só aguardava o anúncio do chefe para postar em seu Twitter: “Não consigo acreditar ainda no que aconteceu, mas na vida é assim, temos que superar nossos obstáculos. Conto com vocês. Não consigo dormir pensando no que aconteceu. Estou muito triste, muito triste, mas sei que irei voltar forte”, disse.

White garante que Wand continua no card. Entretanto, procura um adversário. E você, caro leitor, sugere alguém?

A noite foi de muita ação em Las Vegas. Nos 12 combates do UFC 146, neste sábado, seis terminaram com nocautes e três com finalização. Sendo assim, Dana White, presidente do UFC, decidiu contemplar o que o público mais gosta de assistir.

Dois lutadores receberam o prêmio pelo melhor nocaute. Foram eles Roy Nelson, que desferiu um petardo perfeito em Dave Herman aos 51s de combate, e Dan Hardy, que também nocauteou Duane Ludwig no assalto inicial.

Dois lutadores também foram agraciados com o prêmio de melhor finalização. No card principal, Stefan Struve aplicou um belo armlock da guarda contra Lavar Johnson, enquanto Paul Sass foi de triângulo em Jacob Volkmann.

Não houve prêmio para melhor luta, talvez até pelo fato de todas terem sido ótimas. Será que não conseguiram escolher? Cada premiação equivaleu a 70 mil dólares extras.

The main event at UFC 146 this Saturday is going to be pure excitement. Coming off a bone-snapping win over Rodrigo Minotauro, Frank Mir will try to snatch the heavyweight belt from his victim’s student, Junior Cigano.

It will be no easy task; however, Mir wields a weapon many consider to be Cigano’s greatest weakness: Jiu-Jitsu. It’s worth pointing out how the only loss in the champ’s 15-fight career came by way of the gentle art, when Joaquim Mamute caught him in an armbar back in 2007.

And it wasn’t by chance that Frank became the first person ever to tap out Minotauro, back at UFC 140. Truth is, Mino didn’t tap, but he did end up getting his arm split into pieces with a Kimura lock. Mir truly is grounded in the fundamentals of the gentle art. Unlike many of the MMA fighters competing in the United States, he’s done his time in gi-clad combat, as you can see for yourself in the video below:
