This coming 17th of November in Montreal, Canada, hometown hero Georges Saint-Pierre will be returning to the octagon after a lengthy leave of absence. His time on ice due to a string of knee injuries now counts 18 months, and the Canadian champion will have his work cut out for him right off the bat, as he faces Carlos Condit, the owner of the interim welterweight belt.

During the Quebecois fighter’s time away, Condit took his post as interim champion after outpointing Nick Diaz at UFC 143, in a decision that much of the audience felt should have gone the other way.

The Greg Jackson-trained American is worthy of his laurels, though. A complete striker who loves knocking down anyone in his path, the Jiu-Jitsu purple belt is a well-rounded fighter—and he’s coming off five back-to-back wins.

Now, GSP isn’t complaining about ring rust. At the first pre-event press conference, the Gracie Barra Montreal black belt said he’s in tip-top shape.

Sábado no UFC 143, a finalização da noite foi de Dustin Poirier. Com seu triângulo justo, o faixa-roxa da Louisiana arrochou o braço de Max Holloway aos 3min23s de luta, em Las Vegas. Seu bom Jiu-Jitsu rendeu mais 65 mil dólares na conta bancária, sem falar na 12ª vitória na carreira, em 13 lutas.

O triângulo, visto desde os primeiros UFCs com Royce, continua portanto arma muito eficiente para finalizar, com ou sem kimono – é aquilo, são duas pernas e dois braços contra o pescoço do rival. Mas há sempre uma saída.

The “Submission of the Night” award at UFC 143 last Saturday in Las Vegas went to Dustin Poirier. With a snug triangle, the purple belt from Louisiana hyperextended the arm of Max Holloway 3:23 minutes into their bout. His Jiu-Jitsu savvy earned him an extra 65,000 dollars, not to mention his 12th win in 13 career fights.

The triangle, a move seen on the main stage ever since Royce Gracie and the very first UFC shows, is still a highly effective finishing move both with and without the gi—two legs and two arms against the enemy neck; but there’s often a way out.

USE YOUR WEIGHT BY STACKING OR FALLING BACKWARDS

You can defend by either going forward or backwards. The thing is to never let your opponent break your posture or trap your arm once and for all.

In the video introducing the stars of the UFC 143 main event this Saturday just before the two took to the cage in combat, Carlos Condit said, “I’m going to win because I have a much greater repertory of moves and I’m going to use all my weapons.”

Diaz retorted, “I’d like to see him hit me while walking backwards.”

Once the five rounds were up, Nick’s battered face and the scorecards from the judges proved Condit right.

Even backpedaling, he’d managed to get his arsenal to work for him and leave its mark on his opponent. In an evenly-matched encounter, that made the difference.

On the other hand, over the 25 minutes of combat, Nick was unable to string together that combination of strikes that would prove his superiority or bring the fight to a conclusive finish.

Ineffective with his potent boxing skills, all Diaz could do was resort to his brawler persona, trying to taunt his opponent into bringing the action to him.

As thought trying to influence the public and judges, Diaz wasted a lot of time showboating: dropping his guard, crossing his arms, mad-dogging his opponent between rounds.

Diaz did manage to influence the public; now the judges…

Once it was all over, Diaz’s reaction to the proclamation of his defeat was consistent with his performance: quite inelegant. “I don’t need this s%#$! I’m done with this MMA!”

Condit, on the other hand, showed the composure of a champion: “Diaz is a great fighter … It will be an honor to face Saint-Pierre,” said the interim champion of the welterweight division in his post-fight celebration.

Now ahead of Condit, an attempt at the definitive title by taking on Georges Saint-Pierre at a date yet to be determined, once the Canadian champion has recouped from injury. And next for the UFC, the February 25 event in Japan.

When mounted by your opponent, you have to keep your cool like the “seven Jiu-Jitsu aces taught here on GRACIEMAG.com (click here). Out of anxiousness to get out from bottom position, a fighter may end up exposing himself and ending up in some attack, like an arm-and-neck choke, for example.

At UFC 143 this Saturday in Las Vegas, Rafael Sapo got rocked and dropped and was taking a beating on the ground but recovered, floundered his way out from bottom position, and sent Michael Kuiper sailing through the air. Now on top and in the mount, Sapo sunk an arm-and-neck choke that he maintained until the final bell. Now if Michael Kuiper has his Jiu-Jitsu game up to par, he could have escaped the hold and not needed to be saved by the bell. How? Here’s how:

No vídeo de apresentação da luta principal do UFC 143, que aconteceu na noite desse sábado, em Las Vegas,, momentos antes da entrada dos dois lutadores, Carlos Condit disse: “Vou vencer porque tenho um repertório muito maior de golpes e vou usar todas as minhas armas”.

Diaz respondeu: “Quero ver ele conseguir me acertar andando para trás”.

Ao fim dos cinco rounds da luta principal do UFC 143, o rosto marcado de Nick e as papeletas dos juízes provavam que Condit estava certo.

Mesmo andando para trás, ele havia conseguido usar seu arsenal para castigar o oponente. Em uma luta equilibrada, fez a diferença.

Por outro lado, durante os 25 minutos, Nick não conseguiu aquela sequência de golpes que provariam sua superioridade sobre o adversário ou encerrariam a luta.

Sem conseguir soltar seu poderoso boxe, restou a Diaz a outra parte da sua persona de lutador, as provocações.

Como que em uma tentativa de influenciar o público e os juízes, Diaz perdeu muito tempo fazendo gracinhas, abaixando a guarda, cruzando os braços, encarando o adversário ao final dos rounds.

Por fim, quando a derrota mostrou os dentes, Diaz reagiu de forma coerente com sua atuação, um tanto deselegante: “Não preciso mais dessa merda! Com certeza ganhei. Acho que não vou lutar mais no UFC!”

Condit, por sua vez, mostrou que postura também faz um campeão: “O Diaz é um grande lutador. Será uma honra enfrentar o St. Pierre”, comemorou o agora campeão interino dos meio-médios.

Antes de Diaz x Condit, Fabrício Wedum derrotou Roy Nelson na decisão unânime. Muito superior ao adversário, desde o início ficou claro que o gaúcho só perderia para si mesmo, o que seu corner também percebeu.

“Quero você sério, sem brincadeira, focado até o fim!”, ordenou o treinador entre o segundo e o terceiro rounds.

Werdum seguiu o conselho e com boas joelhadas, chutes baixos e combinações de socos garantiu a volta ao UFC em grande estilo.

Renan Barão foi outro brasileiro a lutar no UFC 143.

O peso galo foi para cima do duríssimo Scott Jorgensen e com um jogo ativo garantiu a decisão unânime. No fim, mandou seu recado: “Dana, eu quero o cinturão!”.

Será que o chefe ouviu?

Rafael “Sapo” Natal, ladeado por Vinícius Draculino e Rominho Barral, abriu a participação brasileira na noite.

E como bom discípulo da linhagem Gracie Barra BH, o mineiro usou e abusou do Jiu-Jitsu para vencer Michael Kuiper, também na decisão unânime.
