Boa movimentação no treino

This Monday, February 27, GRACIEMAG.com was at Team Nogueira training facilities in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Rio de Janeiro, and shot some exclusive footage of Rodrigo Minotauro getting back to sparring for MMA.

GOOD MOVEMENT IN SPARRING

Featured on a float during Rio de Janeiro’s carnival parade, Mino returned to practice displaying good form, despite his long spell on ice due to surgery on his arm, resulting from the Kimura armlock he suffered in the first round of his December UFC encounter with Frank Mir.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, or Minotauro for short, is a Jiu-Jitsu and MMA fighter so special that even when he messes up bad he gets millions of fans to learn from him.

The native of the Brazilian state of Bahia returned to weightlifting workouts in Rio de Janeiro this past weekend and gathered the press at his training center to show off the surgical scar on his arm and his ever-beaming smile.

The former UFC and Pride FC champion looked back on the loss he suffered at the hands of Frank Mir early last December, an incident that provoked an endless stream of debate and discussion at Jiu-Jitsu academies across Brazil that carries on to this day. It’s pretty much become a case of “what not to do.”

Watch the fight, clicking here.

“I had two moments in that fight: I saw the win and saw the loss. I broke into celebration during the fight. I stopped hitting him in order to get the submission, but that was a miserable decision. I got worried later because I saw the arm broken, and it’s hard to go back and start everything all over again,” Rodrigo told Brazil’s Sportv television network. “It hurts the body, but when you do what you love, it’s worth the price.”

KNOCK OUT OR TAP OUT—THAT WAS NOT THE QUESTION

As Minotauro explained after the fight, he stopped pounding on a groggy Frank Mir after hearing the referee ask him not to hit behind the head, and in a fraction of a second he resolved to go for the throat with a risky guillotine. He ended up on bottom and got caught.

Whether to hit or sub, in the end, depends a lot on what the athlete is feeling at that moment, and to the GRACIEMAG.com team that’s not something to be criticized. Or did Maurício Shogun, who kept hitting and didn’t finish Dan Henderson, get it right?

Hence, the lesson we learn is:

If you’re on top and winning, never risk trying a Jiu-Jitsu hold where you’ll end up on bottom. Especially in MMA or a real fight situation.

What about you, dear reader, what did you learn from Minotauro’s loss? Share with us, so we can put a full stop to the issue and let Mino get on with his life.

Twelve days after undergoing surgery on his right arm, having had it snapped by Frank Mir at UFC 140, Rodrigo Minotauro was already back to light physical training. According to his trainer Luis Dórea, the former heavyweight champion is already pedaling away on an ergometric stationary bike in the United States, where he is recovering from a surgical procedure to correct a fractured humerus.

“He’s fine, recovering. We spoke just after the operation and all is well, thank God. Now he’s taking it real slow, gradually. He’ll be back soon,” Luis Dórea told GRACIEMAG.com.

Boxing coach to the Nogueira brothers, Anderson Silva and Junior Cigano, Dórea took the opportunity to assess the waning season.

“It was a great year; the only blemish was Minotauro losing and getting hurt after practically having the fight in the bag. But it happens, and that’s the only thing keeping the year from being 100%. The rest is pure joy: Cigano’s champion, Anderson’s still champion, Rogério won his fight [Tito Ortiz] handily, Demian won; so all the athletes we worked with up close had a really productive year. And even Rodrigo had a good start to the year, winning at UFC Rio. Unfortunately there’s the blight of his last fight.”

The teacher also added his two cents’ worth on the showdown between oversized heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem coming up this Friday in Las Vegas. “To me the odds are split down the middle. Their tactics and techniques are different; I think the one who puts their strategy to practice first will take the lead. Both of them are strong: there’s a chance Brock can take the fight to the ground, and Overeem is a great striker; if he lands solid shots, he could very well get the knockout. It’s an evenly matched fight, very balanced; just their ways of doing things are completely different,” he said without risking a prediction.

Mino in UFC publicity photo

His fight with Frank Mir didn’t turn out quite the way he’d expected it to. Starting out strong and nearly coming up with the knockout, Rodrigo Minotauro ended up succumbing to an arm lock with some dire consequences. With the result, Frank Mir achieved two landmarks: he became the first man to both knock out and tap out the Brazilian in his 41-fight career. Now Rodrigo has added a new scar on his body, having undergone surgery this Saturday. On the Nogueira brothers’ blog (Nogueirabrothers.com.br), Dr. Tom R. Hackett, the head of the team of surgeons who treated Minotauro, addresses the fighter’s injury and recovery:

“Mr. Nogueira suffered a complex fracture to his humerus. The fracture began in the middle of the bone and extended to the elbow region. Unfortunately, the radial nerve (one of the main nerves lending a feeling of power to the hands) was damaged. The nerve is located in the area of the fracture, and the bone compressed it. Before the operation, he had very little strength in his hand and no strength whatsoever in his thumb,” explained Hackett.

“The operation involved an incision behind the arm. The nerve was removed from the location of the fracture and treated. The fracture was fixed with a plate and 16 screws, and now, less than 12 hours post-op, his hand functions are returning and the bone is mending,” he adds.

Minotauro already has a return date on the horizon and I has already begun recovery exercises.

“We planned to start out with a series of movement exercises today, and we’ll start reinforcing it next month. If all goes well, he’ll be back to full training in the coming months and should be 100% to fight in six months or less. We foresee him making a complete and full recovery,” he says in finishing.
