Having put in a solid performance at UFC 138, when he subbed the then undefeated Papy Abedi, Thiago Pitbull is already lined up for his next engagement in the octagon. The Brazilian will take on Denmark’s Martin Kampmann on March 3 at UFC on FX 2, which will be broadcast live on FX channel in the USA from a venue yet to be confirmed.

“The fight between Martin ‘The Hitman’ Kampmann and Thiago ‘Pitbull’ Alves has been verbally agreed to,” confirmed UFC president Dana White.

Known for his aggressive style, Pitbull has 19 career wins, of which 11 came by way of knockout.

Now Kampmann is coming off a split-decision win over Rick Story at UFC 139 and boasts 18 victories on his record. The Xtreme Couture representative has already beaten Brazilians Paulo Thiago, Alexandre Baixinho and Thales Leite, not to mention the fact that he has never been finished in his eight-year career.

Com uma atuação sólida em sua última apresentação no UFC 138, quando finalizou o até então invicto Papy Abedi, Thiago Pitbull já está com novo compromisso agendado. O cearense encara o dinamarquês Martin Kampmann, dia 3 de março, no show que será exibido pelo canal FX nos EUA, o UFC on FX 2, ainda sem local confirmado.

“A luta entre Martin Kampmann ‘The Hitman’ e Thiago ‘Pitbull’ Alves já está fechada verbalmente”, confirmou o presidente do UFC, Dana White.

Conhecido por seu estilo agressivo, Pitbull tem 19 vitórias na carreira, sendo 11 por nocaute.

Já Kampmann vem de uma vitória por decisão dividida sobre Rick Story no UFC 139, e tem um cartel de 18 triunfos. O representante da Xtreme Couture já bateu os brasileiros Paulo Thiago, Alexandre Baixinho e Thales Leite, além de nunca ter sido finalizado em oito anos de carreira.

The UFC’s return to England was a treat for fans who like a good fight. With Brazilians Renan Barão (bantamweight) and Thiago”Pitbull” (welterweight) coming up with first-round tapouts and middleweight Mark Muñoz outworking Chris Leben on the main card, the English crowd at the LG arena in Birmingham were not left wanting by UFC 138, with a total of four submissions in ten bouts.

Mark Muñoz and Chris Leben entered the arena bearing the burden of having to show the fans a fight a cut above the rest. And they were up to the task. Using his takedown-and-pound game to good effect, the Rafael Cordeiro-trained Muñoz outpointed a game Leben in the first.

The second frame was no different. Leben won over the crowd with his solid chin and perseverance, having persisted after retaining a gruesome gash to his brow. But even with the local support urging Leben forward, it didn’t keep referee Marc Goddard from waving an end to the fight during the break between rounds one and two, due to the bleeding cut on Leben’s face. Leben’s seconds agreed, and Muñoz notched another victory.

“He (Leben) is really tough. I knew I had to dodge that left hand of his; it’s really strong. I had faith in my wrestling. That’s what I did,” said Muñoz in summary, to then address his future in the organization: “I’ve done a lot in this division. I feel Anderson is the best of all pound for pound. I consider Anderson a friend, but I feel I deserve a shot at the title.”

Renan Barão is one of those fighters who lays it all out there in the octagon and often expose themselves in pursuing the result. Owner of a dextrous game that would cause Jean-Claude Van Damme envy, once again the Brazilian didn’t disappoint, and went to town against Brad Pickett, who had the whole house behind him.

And with an array of strikes, Barão left the Englishman disoriented: with knees, elbows and punches from all angles, he wore away at his opponent until a series of strikes on the ground forced Pickett to give up his back. Barão didn’t falter and sunk a rear-naked choke, finishing his second UFC fight perfectly, one minute from the first-round bell.

After the referee raised his arm, Barão, who just had a son one month ago, celebrated vibrantly with his team, Nova União, and stated through the interpreter, Braulio “Carcará” Estima, that he has a lot more to show in the event: “I trained all the styles for this night. I’m really happy, but I feel I still have a lot to improve on to put on better and better performances for my fans.”

After finding out at weigh-ins on Friday that he still had 1 kg to lose in less than an hour in order to make the weight ceiling for his division, an enraged Thiago “Pitbull” had to be pulled away from Papy Abedi to keep him from starting the first round one day early, during the traditional staredown.

And if at the ring of the opening bell things were already hot, they heated up even more after it. Early on, Papy stalked the Brazilian, landing some good shots. However, “Pitbull” held firm and, with a solid hook, knocked Abedi to the ground, where he pounced with elbows and punches until his hapless opponent turned his back and succumbed to a rear-naked choke 3:32 minutes into the first round.

“I love England. You guys are the best,” said “Pitbull” in thanks to the home crowd, which had always been on his side.

Another highlight of the night was Terry Etim’s guillotine just 17 seconds into his fight, to the delight of the noisy crowd.

O UFC retornou à terra da Rainha e não decepcionou os fãs que gostam de boas brigas. Com os brasileiros Renan Barão (galo) e Thiago “Pitbull” (meio-médio) finalizando em lutas do card principal e com Mark Muñoz vencendo Chris Leben no principal confronto da noite, pelo peso médio (o de Anderson Silva), os ingleses presentes à arena LG, em Birmingham, não se decepcionaram com o UFC 138, com um total de quatro finalizações em dez confrontos.

Mark Muñoz e Chris Leben entraram na arena já carregando o peso de apresentar para os fãs uma luta no nível dos demais confrontos da noite. E os americanos não decepcionaram. Se valendo do seu eficiente jogo de derrubar e bater, Mark, treinado pelo brasileiro Rafael Cordeiro, começou o combate pontuando mais do que Leben.

A segunda etapa não foi diferente. Leben, que mostrava queixo duro ao assimilar bem os golpes e continuar firme após sofrer um grande corte no supercílio, ganhou de vez a torcida. Mas, mesmo com todo apoio local, ao ser examinado no intervalo entre o segundo e o terceiro round, Leben foi impedido de prosseguir pelo árbitro Marc Goddard, devido ao grande corte no rosto. Os segundos de Leben concordaram, e mais uma vitória para Munoz.

“Ele (Leben) é muito duro. Sabia que tinha que me esquivar da mão esquerda dele que é sempre forte. Confiei no meu wrestling. Foi isso que fiz”, resumiu Munoz para depois completar sobre seu futuro na organização: “Já fiz muita coisa nessa categoria. Acho Anderson é o melhor peso por peso de todos. Considero o Anderson um amigo, mas acho que mereço minha chance de lutar pelo título”.

Renan Barão é daqueles lutadores que não se escondem dentro do octógono e que muitas vezes se expõem buscando o resultado. Dono de um jogo plástico de dar inveja a Jean Claude Van Damme, uma vez mais o potiguar não decepcionou e partiu com tudo para cima do londrino Brad Pickett, que lutava com irrestrito apoio da arena lotada.

E a gama de golpes de Barão deixou o inglês desnorteado: joelhadas, cotoveladas e socos de todas as formas, que foram minando o adversário, até uma sequência de golpes no chão obrigar Pickett a virar de costas. Barão não titubeou e encaixou o mata-leão, fechando com perfeição sua segunda participação no UFC.

Após ter o braço erguido pelo árbitro, Barão, que teve um filho há menos de um mês, comemorou muito com sua equipe Nova União e afirmou, com Braulio Carcará de intérprete, que ainda tem muito a mostrar no evento: “Treinei todos os estilos para essa noite. Estou muito feliz, mas sinto que ainda tem muito para melhorar e para dar um show cada vez melhor para os meus fãs”.

Após perceber na pesagem oficial, sexta, que teria que perder quase 1kg em menos de uma hora para chegar ao limite permitido na categoria, o brasileiro Thiago ”Pitbull”, na tradicional encarada, teve de ser contido pelo presidente Dana White para não iniciar o primeiro round contra Papy Abedi no dia anterior ao evento.

E, ao soar o gongo, o clima que já era quente, esquentou ainda mais. Logo no início, Papy foi para cima do brasileiro e chegou a desferir bons golpes. Apesar disso, “Pitbull” continuou seguro e, após acertar um bom cruzado no adversário, levou Papy ao chão, o que o possibilitou desferir boas cotoveladas. Muito castigado pelos golpes do cearense, Papy não conseguiu mais se defender e foi finalizado por Thiago com um justo mata-leão aos 3min32s do primeiro round.

“Eu amo a Inglaterra. Vocês são demais”, agradeceu “Pitbull” que sempre teve a torcida ao seu lado.

Outro destaque foi o rei da guilhotina, Terry Etim, que finalizou com apenas 17 segundos para delírio da barulhenta plateia.

The UFC took its 138th event to a full house this evening in Nottingham, England; and provided an action-packed event where the majority of the fights didn’t make it till the final bell. Although no title fights came with the package, the maiden five-round non-title main event was abbreviated to two, with Mark Munoz rendering Chris Leben unable to continue after the second-round break. Also making a serious impression, Renan Barão showed he’s a true virtuoso in putting away hometown favorite Brad Pickett, ending the contest in the first and perhaps lining himself up to take on bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz in the near future.

Mark Muñoz defeats Chris Leben via doctor’s stoppage in R1.

The first round was evenly matched, with takedowns from both sides but Munoz seeming to have the edge. The second round saw Munoz go into full gear, taking Leben to the ground and punishing him with shots from the top, one of them opening a cut above Leben’s eye. After one of several guillotine attempts from Leben, a stop is called to the match to check the gruesome bleeding coming from a gash over Leben’s left eye. At first reporting that he couldn’t see from the damaged eye, Leben changed his tune when told the doctor would stop the fight; and the second round continued. Munoz continued to dominate and an end would be called to the fight during the second-round break, after Leben confessed he could not see through his left eye.

Getting the better of the standup action, Renan Barão used a full striker playbook against Brad Pickett, throwing crisp punching combinations and even launching flying knees, before knocking Pickett to the ground, where he deftly took back mount and cranked out a rear-naked choke — all in the first round.

With crushing fist work, Thiago Alves dropped Papy Abedi to the ground, where he took full mount and landed more stunning fists, causing Abedi to give up his back and the rear-naked choke. Alves wins by submission in round one.

Weathering a storm of strikes from Diabate in the first round, Anthony Perosh turns the tables in the second, putting on a virtuoso top-position display on the ground that culminated in a rear-naked choke.

Terry Etim defeats Edward Faaloloto via guillotine choke in R1.

Terry Etim made quick work of Edward Faaloloto. Starting off strong with punches and kicks early on, Etim cynched a tight guillotine choke and pulled guard as a response to a Faaloloto takedown, ending the action early in the first round.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to England this Saturday the 5th, taking UFC 138 to Birmingham’s LG Arena. In the main event, Chris Leben, who is coming off a devastating win over Wanderlei Silva in just 27 seconds, and Mark Muñoz, whose last fight was a win over another Brazilian, Demian Maia.

The fighters are set star in the first five-round fight where a title is not on the line in the UFC. Also on the card, Thiago Alves takes on unbeaten Congolese Sweden-transplant Papy ‘Makombo’ Abedi, while Renan Barão stars in the co-main event against hometown boy Brad Pickett.

Leben and Muñoz face off in five-round affair

At 30 years of age, Chris Leben boasts a record of 22 wins, of which 12 came by way of knockout, in his 29-fight career that includes seven losses. The American is coming off a spectacular trouncing of Wanderlei Silva. In 2008, Leben was overcome by Michael Bisping via decision and was subsequently banned for steroid use. After returning to the event following suspension, Leben got back on track by winning four of the six fights he has had in the UFC since.

Now, Leben will face off with “The Filippino Wrecking Machine,” Mark Muñoz.

For the first time ever in a main event, Muñoz, 33, holds a respectable record of 11 wins, five by knockout, and just two losses. In his two-year UFC tenure, the Filippino, as he is called because of his ancestry, fought eight times and won on six occasions, the most recent being against Demian Maia at UFC 131. The middleweight has also fought under the WEC banner.

English hero in Renan Barão’s path

After making his UFC debut against Cole Escovedo last May, Brazil’s Renan Barão will be making his first appearance in a co-main event, facing local hero Brad Pickett in the bantamweight division. Having collected titles in Brazil, Barão signed with the WEC and won on his debut, submitting Anthony Leone in the third round. Six months later, he submitted Chris Cariaso, as well. The fighter has only lost once in 28 professional bouts. Should he win this time around, the Brazilian could line himself up to challenge Dominick Cruz for the title.

Angry Pitbull against first-timer

Brazil’s Thiago “Pitbull” Alves will also battle on the main card at the event in England. Thiago will have his hands full against Congolese-born naturalized Swede Papy “Makambo” Abedi, who is undefeated and will be making his UFC debut. Abedi is a judo black belt and promises to turn heads at welterweight. However solid Abedi’s background, Alves too has a solid MMA record that dates back to 2005. Of the 17 fights under his belt, he has won 13, 10 of which ended in a knockout. However, he’s coming off a points loss to Rick Story and won just one of his last four UFC fights.

Os lutadores escalados vão protagonizar pela primeira vez no uFC uma luta de cinco rounds sem ter um cinturão em disputa. Dois brasileiros participam do card principal. Thiago Alves encara o congolês naturalizado sueco Papy ‘Makambo’ Abedi, invicto na carreira, e Renan Barão, que faz a penúltima luta da noite contra o ídolo local Brad Pickett.

O UFC 138 começa a partir das 15h30 (horário de Brasília). O Facebook oficial do UFC transmite as duas primeiras preliminares da programação ao vivo às 15h30.

Leben e Muñoz se enfrentam em cinco rounds

Aos 30 anos, Chris Leben tem um cartel de 22 vitórias, com 12 nocautes e sete derrotas. O americano vem de uma vitória espetacular sobre Wanderlei Silva. Em 2008, o atleta foi vencido por Michael Bisping em uma decisão por pontos e foi flagrado nos exames antidoping por conta de anabolizantes. Após seu retorno ao evento, Leben se recuperou e já venceu quatro das seis lutas que disputou no UFC.

Agora, o americano tem pela frente a “máquina de destruição filipina”, Mark Muñoz.

Pela primeira vez em uma luta principal, Muñoz, de 33 anos, já possui um respeitável cartel de 11 vitórias na carreira, sendo cinco por nocaute, e apenas duas derrotas. Em dois anos no UFC, o filipino, como é chamado por conta de sua ascendência, lutou oito vezes e venceu em seis ocasiões, sendo a vitória mais recente sobre Demian Maia, no UFC 131. O atleta da categoria peso médio também participou do WEC.

Ídolo inglês no caminho de Renan Barão

Após estrear com vitória em maio no UFC, contra Cole Escovedo na edição 130, o potiguar Renan Barão se destaca no UFC 138 e participa pela primeira vez escalado na co-luta principal, contra o ídolo local Brad Pickett, pelo peso galo. Após colecionar títulos no Brasil, Barão assinou com o WEC e estreou com vitória por finalização sobre Anthony Leone. Seis meses depois, finalizou também Chris Cariaso. Com isso, o lutador perdeu apenas um combate em 28 disputados. Em caso de vitória, Barão pode ter em breve a oportunidade de enfrentar Dominick Cruz pelo cinturão da categoria.

Pitbull mordido contra estreante

O cearense Thiago “Pitbull” Alves também participa do card principal do evento sediado na Inglaterra. Thiago terá um adversário duro pela frente, o congolês naturalizado sueco Papy “Makambo” Abedi, ainda invicto e que fará sua estreia no UFC. Abedi é faixa preta em Judô e uma das promessas da categoria meio-médio. Apesar do bom retrospecto de Abedi, Thiago Alves também apresenta bons números em seu histórico nos eventos de MMA desde 2005. Das 17 lutas que já participou, venceu 12, sendo dez por nocaute. Porém, vem de uma derrota por pontos contra Rick Story e venceu apenas uma das últimas quatro lutas no UFC.
