This Saturday at UFC 135 in Denver, Colorado, served up a night replete with submissions, Jiu-Jitsu of the finest quality. Most notable was the submission hold that brought the evening’s main event to a finish and yielded Jon Jones his first successful title defense, against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, in a fight that played out just as could be expected: Jones dominated.

Jones set the pace from the outset, working his clinch, throwing his trademark spinning elbows, and displaying a broad array of strikes. The second round provided a clue that he was in fact looking for a submission, though, when he pulled guard for a triangle. Rampage tried to land some strikes here and there but appeared to be fatigued and couldn’t make it to the end of the third round. After getting taken down, Jackson yielded to back mount and offered no resistance to a rear-naked choke, promptly tapping out. In his 14-win career – with one disqualification loss – this is Jon Jones’s fourth submission.

At 37 years of age, Matt Hughes offered little resistance to Josh Koscheck’s onslaught. The UFC Hall of Famer suffered a barrage of strikes that laid him out with just one second left in the opening round.

Another who showed some first-rate Jiu-Jitsu was the Cesar Gracie-trained Nate Diaz. The brown belt submitted Takanori Gomi after shifting from armbar to triangle and then back to armbar.

An interesting feature of the night was the marked evolution in Mark Hunt’s ground game, since he began being trained by Carlson Gracie black belt Ricardo Libório, even getting in a knee on belly and coming close with an armbar. The former K-1 champion won a unanimous decision against Ben Rothwell.

O UFC 135, na noite deste sábado, em Denver, contou com boas finalizações, Jiu-Jitsu de qualidade. Foi assim, por exemplo, na principal luta da noite, a disputa de cinturão meio-pesado entre Jon Jones e Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Na sua primeira defesa de título, Jones fez o que era imaginado: dominou.

Desde o início, Jones imprimiu o ritmo. Trabalhou no clinche, soltou a tradicional cotovelada giratória e variou os golpes. Na segunda parcial, deu indícios de que buscaria a finalização, quando pulou e puxou para o triângulo. Rampage tentava alguns socos isolados, mas, aparentemente cansado, não resistiu ao terceiro round. Depois de ser quedado, viu o atual campeão pegar as suas costas e apertar com o estrangulamento. Só restou bater. Em 14 vitórias – e um revés por desclassificação -, esta é a quarta finalização de Jon Jones.

Aos 37 anos, Matt Hughes não conteve Josh Koscheck. O Hall da Fama do UFC não conseguiu desviar dos socos de Koscheck. Ao chão, sofreu uma saraivada de golpes e, ironicamente, foi nocauteado quando faltava apenas um segundo para o fim do assalto inicial.

Quem também mostrou um Jiu-Jitsu de primeira foi Nate Diaz, treinado por Cesar Gracie. O faixa-marrom finalizou Takanori Gomi após variar do armlock para o triângulo e depois voltar para a chave de braço. Interessante foi ver a evolução no chão de Mark Hunt, treinado pelo faixa-preta de Carlson Gracie Ricardo Libório,  com direito a joelho na barriga e tudo. O ex-campeão do K-1 bateu Ben Rothwell por decisão unânime.

It’s UFC day in Denver, Colorado. In the evening’s main event, Jon Jones’s talent will be put to the test against Quinton Jackson’s considerable experience. The light heavyweight champion will be defending his belt for the first time, and Rampage wants it back.

“Before his fight with Forrest Griffin, Rampage said: ‘Forrest Griffin couldn’t squash a grape, and he lost. He said the same thing about me, that I couldn’t squash a grape with my fists, that I have no power in my punch. So I think he doesn’t realize that this is MMA, not boxing, and the game isn’t based on punching power, it’s based on skill, discipline and a passion for the game,” said Jones.

“I think I’m outdoing Rampage in all those departments. He’d love to be champion again, but I don’t think he really lives the lifestyle it takes to be champion again. And I can’t imagine giving the belt to someone who doesn’t love doing what it takes to be champion,” he added.

Jackson sticks to the same playbook that made him famous since the days of Pride FC:

“My personality is not going to change – not titles or money, none of that can change it. I don’t think I’m better than anybody else because I’m a professional fighter. That’s why people don’t understand when I say this is my career and my work. It’s not that I don’t love the sport, it’s a job I do. This is me, I’m living the American dream,” he said.

“I feel it’s really important for me to get the belt back to show the world they made a mistake,” said Jackson, referring to his second title defense, against Griffin back in July 2008, “I want to show that I’m still here and am still training like a champion.”

Besides Jones vs. Jackson, there are other intriguing matchups on the UFC 135 card, like Matt Hughes versus Josh Koshcheck and Nate Diaz against Takanori Gomi.

Hoje é dia de UFC em Dnver, Colorado. Na principal luta da noite, o talento de Jon Jones será posto a prova contra a experiência de Quinton Jackson. O campeão de meio-pesados coloca pela primeira vez o cinturão em jogo. Já Rampage tenta retomar o título.

“Antes da luta contra o Forrest Griffin, Rampage disse: ‘Forrest Griffin não pode arrebentar uma uva com as mãos, e perdeu. Ele disse a mesma coisa de mim, que eu não posso arrebentar uma uva com as minhas mãos e que não tenho força nos socos. Então acho que ele está deixando de perceber que é MMA, e não boxe, e o jogo não é baseado em torno de ter força na trocação, é baseado em ter sutileza e habilidade, ter disciplina, e ter paixão pelo jogo”, diz Jones.

“Acho que estou superando o Rampage quando se trata de todas essas categorias. Ele adoraria ser o campeão novamente, mas não acho que ele realmente vive o estilo de vida para se tornar o campeão mundial de novo. E eu não poderia me imaginar dando o cinturão para alguém que não ama o que se precisa fazer para ser campeão”, completa.

Jackson mantém o mesmo estilo que o tornou famoso, desde os tempos do Pride:

“Nada vai mudar minha personalidade – nem títulos e nem dinheiro, nada disso. Não acho que sou melhor do que ninguém porque sou um lutador profissional. É por isso que as pessoas não entendem quando digo que esta é a minha carreira e meu trabalho. Não é que eu não ame o esporte, é um trabalho que me mantém com os pés no chão. Esse sou eu, estou vivendo o sonho americano”. fala.

“Acho que é muito importante para mim recuperar esse cinturão para que eu possa mostrar ao mundo que eles cometeram um erro”, disse Jackson, se referindo a derrota na segunda defesa de título para Griffin, em julho de 2008: “Quero mostrar que ainda estou aqui, e ainda treino como um campeão”.

The video is also peppered with some of the champ’s octagon highlights and an interview where he sums up his view on what it means to be a fighter: “As a warrior, I think it’s dangerous to become obsessed with accolades and belts and rank and stature. I think it’s more about the day to day lifestyle of being a warrior. I don’t think there’s really a destination, it’s really more about the journey.”

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson may appear as Luke Cage in the movies. The fighter is negotiating with the American publishing company responsible for the film, to play the part in one of the adaptations of the comic “The Avengers”.

“I had a meeting with Marvel… I don’t know if I can say that! But I’d love to play Luke Cage; I think that would be perfect. It would be incredible to be Luke Cage, no one would be more incredible than me,” he is quoted as saying on SporTV.com.

The fighter is committed to his career as an actor, having performed 12 times. One of his roles was that of B.A. in the A-Team remake.

Rampage 2

But before joining the cinema, Quinton Jackson has a meeting set with Jon Jones, getting a shot at the light heavyweight belt at UFC 135 in September in Colorado.

Aldo vs. Florian

And the UFC has now confirmed the fight between José Aldo and Kenny Florian, the Brazilian’s second defense of his UFC featherweight belt since the WEC became obsolete. The showdown will go down at UFC 135, to take place October 8 in Houston, Texas. Aldo is recovering from a spine injury that has been bothering him since his UFC debut, against Mark Hominick.

Frankie Edgar back in action

At the same event as José Aldo, lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will enter the scene, finally having his rubber match with Gray Maynard, after the fight was postponed when both participants were injured.

O lutador Quinton “Rampage” Jackson pode aparecer como Luke Cage no cinema. O americano negocia  com a editora americana responsável pelo filme para interpretar o herói em uma adaptação da série “Vingadores”.

“Eu tive uma reunião com a Marvel… Não sei se posso falar disso! Mas adoraria interpretar o Luke Cage, acho que seria perfeito. Seria um Luke Cage muito incrível, ninguém seria mais incrível do que eu”, comentou de acordo com o site “SporTV.com”.

O atleta, que pretende investir na carreira, atuou 12 vezes como ator. Num dos papeis, foi o folclórico BA do filmes “Esquadrão Classe A”.

Mas, antes dos cinemas, Quinton Jackson tem encontro contra Jon Jones, luta que vale o cinturão de meio-pesados no UFC 135, no dia 24 de setembro, em Colorado.

Aldo x Florian

E o UFC já confirmou a luta entre José Aldo e Kenny Florian, a segunda defesa de cinturão do peso pena brasileiro desde que o WEC deixou de existir.  O desafio acontece no Ultimate 136, que acontece Houston, no dia 8 de outubro. Aldo se recuperou de uma lesão na cervical que vinha incomodando desde a estreia no UFC, contra Mark Hominick.

Frankie Edgar volta à ação

No mesmo evento que José Aldo vai estar em ação, o campeão de leves Frankie Edgar entra em cena. Edgar finalmente encara Gray Maynard, combate que já era para ter acontecido, mas a luta foi adiada, pois ambos se contundiram.

UFC president Dana White announced some news at the press conference for UFC 131, which takes place this Saturday in Canada.

One of them is that there’ll be more five-round fights in the future, something that so far was reserved for title defenses. The idea is for main events to last five rounds, except for those already stipulated for three rounds in contracts.

Jon Jones vs. Rampage

The name of current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’s next opponent has finally come out of the hat. Quoted on MMAJunkie, this Thursday White said Quinton “Rampage” Jackson should get his title shot on September 24 at UFC 135 in Denver, Colorado. First, though, Jones has to get doctor clearance for an injury sustained to his hand. Another fight on tap for the event is between Matt Hughes and Diego Sanchez.

Flyweight time

A flyweight division was in the works for the WEC for years. White admitted the weight group will be featured in the UFC, he just hasn’t set a date yet.

Opponent for Velasquez

And the winner of the UFC 131 main event, between Junior Cigano and Shane Carwin, will be the next challenger to Cain Velasquez’s heavyweight throne, which should happen in four or five months.
