Current world light featherweight champion Guilherme Mendes was tuned in when the fighter sharing his same last name, right in the octagon, performed a daring maneuver to avoid the nuisance of Rani Yahya’s guard last Saturday at UFC 133.

What risks did Chad Mendes’ somersault at the UFC pose? When’s the right time to be daring, like the UFC featherweight was? Our commentator for a day, Guilherme Mendes, agreed to put the move under the microscope for GRACIEMAG.com readers.

Risks:

“There’s a great chance of that move going wrong. Even so, Chad wasn’t afraid, he didn’t think about the cons when he did it, and that’s what made him take the plunge. The result was real cool, it dazzled the fans. He was daring and wasn’t afraid to take a chance, which is quite rare in a fight because of everything that comes with a move gone wrong and a loss.”

The time to be brazen:

“A lot of folks simply “stall”, or don’t take chances, in competitions, and they don’t end up doing what they trained to do because they’re afraid to take risks or, even worse, because they’re afraid to lose. That causes you to not just lose to your opponent but to your own self. During a fight you have to use your confidence and daring. Confidence makes you see the fight the way a winner would before even having won, while daring is what catches your opponent by surprise. You surpass your limits.”

Unprecedented move?

“In Jiu-Jitsu it probably isn’t. André Galvão did a similar move at a major championship (rewatch it in the video below, at around the 2:20-minute mark). André is the kind of athlete who, like Chad, shows he has this attribute, he’s not afraid to take a chance with daring and different moves. In my opinion that’s what makes his Jiu-Jitsu one of the greatest ones to watch.”

O atual campeão mundial dos plumas Guilherme Mendes estava ligado quando seu xará, em pleno Octagon, arriscou um ousado movimento para se desvencilhar da guarda de Rani Yahya, no último UFC 133, sábado.

Quais os riscos da cambalhota protagonizada por Chad Mendes no UFC? Qual a hora certa de ousar, como fez o peso-pena do UFC? Nosso comentarista por um dia, Guilherme Mendes, topou analisar o golpe para os leitores do GRACIEMAG.com.

Riscos:

“Esse movimento tinha grandes chances de dar errado. Mesmo assim, Chad não teve medo, não pensou no lado negativo na hora de fazer, e isso fez que ele arriscasse. O resultado foi muito legal, e encheu os olhos de todos os torcedores. Ele foi ousado e não teve medo de arriscar, um fator que é muito difícil no momento da luta, por tudo que um golpe errado e uma derrota envolve”.

A hora de ousar:

“Nas competições muitas pessoas simplesmente ‘travam’, ou não arriscam, e acabam não desenvolvendo o que realmente foi treinado, por medo de arriscar, ou pior, por medo de perder. Isso faz que você perca não somente para o adversário, mas para você mesmo. Durante a luta é necessário fazer uso da confiança e da ousadia, confiança faz você enxergar a luta como vencedor mesmo antes mesmo de vencer, enquanto a ousadia leva a surpreender o adversário, você vai além do seus limites.”

Movimento inédito?

“No Jiu-Jitsu provavelmente não é, o André Galvão já fez um movimento parecido num grande campeonato (relembre abaixo, perto do minuto 2:20). André é um atleta que, como o Chad, demonstra esta qualidade, ele não tem medo de arriscar movimentos ousados e diferentes. Na minha opinião, isso faz que o Jiu-Jitsu dele seja um dos mais bonitos que já vi.”

Vitor Belfort was overjoyed and upbeat at the post UFC 133 press conference this Saturday in Philadelphia. He came out of his fight with Yoshihiro Akiyama with the prize for best knockout and called over his boss Dana White for a photo.

“I just trained really hard. I’m ready, and I don’t know who’s going to win but I want the winner of the fight between Okami and Anderson. I want the belt, that’s my objective, my future, and I’m not going to stop,” he said.

“Anderson got me with that kick… What’s in the past is in the past, I’m only looking to the future. He tried that kick and now everyone tries it. I’m ready and I know what I want,” he added.

The Brazilian overcame Akiyama in just 1:52 minutes and admitted he was dying for a win.

“I got here hungry for it and that’s how I was in the gym too. It was hard on my training partners because I was really focused,” he declared.

“I feel as though I’ve completed a mission. People confuse dreams with desires. When I was a teenager I dreamed of being the best in the world. I left my family and training partners behind to move to Vegas. I’m here, and I stabilized my career. I’m training really hard in Las Vegas. I know what I want, I’m paying for it, I’m making sacrifices,” he continued.

On the August 27 UFC event in Brazil, the fighter is also really confident it will be a success. To Belfort, MMA will surprise everyone in the land where it was created.

“The message I have for Brazil is, ‘Get ready! The UFC is coming and these days its like the World Cup in Brazil: the people love it. It’s the second time the event goes there and television made way. It may seem like madness what I’m going to say, but in three years the UFC will surpass soccer,” he said in closing.

On a night replete with splendid knockouts, deciding who’s to take the 70,000-dollar best knockout prize must be a tough task indeed. This time it was Vitor Belfort’s, for his putting away of Yoshihiro Akiyama in just 1:52 minutes.

Now fight of the night honors went to the main event between Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz, won by the former.

As there no a single submission emerged at the show, UFC president Dana White decided to reward Brian Ebersole. The reason: having quickly removed Dennis Hallman’s speedo from the television broadcast, as the knockout came in the opening round.

UFC 133 featured some splendid knockouts, this Saturday in Philadelphia. In all, five bouts ended in such manner. And the main event thus ended as well. The veteran Tito Ortiz tried what he could on Rashad Evans, but the second stanza saw Rashad land a sublime takedown and stifle his rival on the ground, whether in half-guard, side-control or reverse crucifix, where he trapped Ortiz’s arm to punch. Tito escaped but remained turtling on the ground to avoid knees to his face. But Evans caught him by surprise with a potent knee to the midsection that rendered him helpless. A few follow-up strikes left the ref no choice but to step in and call an end to the encounter.

In the co-main event, Vitor Belfort lived up to his monicker of Phenom. He rained punishment on Yoshihiro Akiyama with strikes standing till Akiyama dropped to the ground. True to his style, Vitor carried on striking non-stop. In just 1:52 minutes he notched his 14th career knockout.

In the undercard, Chad Mendes maintained his unbeaten record, grinding out his 11th win, against Rani Yahya. Chad stifled Rani’s attempts to take him to the ground and even managed to get takedowns of his own. After three rounds the Brazilian had proven ineffective, earning Mendes the unanimous decision.

Now Rafael Sapo managed his first win in the UFC, against Paul Bradley, where he had one loss and one draw prior. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt didn’t allow his opponent to take him down and dished out solid kicks throughout the affair. Having had the advantage for most of the three rounds, the judges game him a unanimous not. Sapo snapped his opponent’s six-fight win streaking.

Vitor Belfort era só alegria e empolgação na coletiva após mo UFC 133, neste sábado, na Filadélfia. Recebeu o prêmio pelo nocaute da noite contra Yoshihiro Akiyama e chamou o patrão Dana White para tirar foto.

“Apenas treinei muito duro. Estou pronto e, não sei quem vai vencer, mas quero o vencedor da luta entre Okami e Anderson. Quero o cinto, esse é o meu objetivo, o meu futuro e não vou parar”, disse.

“Anderson me acertou aquele chute… Tudo no passado se foi, apenas olho para o futuro. Ele tentou aquele chute e hoje todos tentam. Estou pronto e sei o que eu quero”, completou.

O lutador bateu Akiyama em apenas 1min52s de luta, admitiu que estava louco pela vitória.

“Cheguei aqui com muita fome e estava assim também na academia. Foi difícil para os parceiros de treino, porque estava com muito foco”, declarou.

“Me sinto como se tivesse completado a missão. Pessoas confundem sonhos com desejos. Quando era um adolescente tinha o sonho de ser o melhor do mundo. Mudei minha família e companheiros de treino para Vegas, estou aqui, estabilizei a minha carreira. Estou treinando muito duro em Las Vegas, sei o que quero, estou pagando, fazendo o sacrifício”, prosseguiu.

Sobre o UFC no Brasil, no dia 27 de agosto, o lutador também está muito confiante no sucesso. Para Belfort, o MMA vai surpreender na terra onde foi criado.

“A mensagem que eu tenho para o Brasil é: estejam prontos! O UFC está chegando e, hoje, é como uma Copa do Mundo no Brasil, o povo adora. É a segunda vez do evento por lá e a TV se abriu. Parece loucura o que eu vou dizer, mas em três anos o UFC será mais que o futebol”, encerra.

Numa noite com belos nocautes, deve ter sido duro decidir qual valeria o prêmio de 70 mil dólares como o melhor da noite. E a quantia foi para Vitor Belfort, que precisou de apenas 1min52s para acabar com as chances de Yoshihiro Akiyama.

Já a melhor luta foi para o desafio principal, entre Rashad Evans e Tito Ortiz, vencido pelo primeiro, por nocaute técnico.

Como não houve finalização, o presidente do UFC, Dana White, decidiu dar o prêmio a Brian Ebersole. O motivo: ter tirado rapidamente o short curto de Dennis Hallman da transmissão de TV, já que o nocaute foi ainda no assalto inicial.

Na principal da noite também foi assim. Veterano, Tito Ortiz tentou fazer o que podia contra Rashad Evans. Mas, na segunda parcial, Rashad derrubou e abafou no chão, seja na meia-guarda, no cem quilos ou no crucifixo invertido, travando o braço do adversário para socar. Tito escapou e permaneceu de quatro apoios ao chão, para evitar as joelhadas no rosto. Mas Evans surpreendeu, e, com o joelho, acertou em cheio, mas no plexo de Ortiz, que deitou-se, sem condições. Alguns golpes em seguida não restava nada mais ao árbitro além de encerrar a peleja.

Na segunda luta principal, Vitor Berlfort fez valer o apelido: Fenômeno. Na trocação, castigou Yoshihiro Akiyama, que caiu ao chão. Bem ao seu estilo, Vitor continuou socando, sem parar. Em apenas 1min52s, chegou ao 14º nocaute da carreira.

No card preliminar, Chad Mendes manteve a invencibilidade contra Rani Yahya, tendo conquistado a 11ª vitória. Chad anulou as tentativas de Rani em levá-lo ao chão e ainda conseguiu derrubar. Ao fim dos três rounds, o brasileiro não conseguiu ser efetivo, o que valeu a decisão unânime a favor de Mendes.

Já Rafael Sapo conseguiu a primeira vitória no UFC contra Paul Bradley, depois de uma derrota e empate. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu não deixou o oponente derrubar e usou bem os chutes durante a luta. Levou vantagem na maior parte do tempo, tendo a preferência dos jurados em decisão unânime. Sapo deu fim a uma sequência de seis lutas sem perder do oponente.
