Charles do Bronx was putting on a virtuous performance against Nik Lentz at UFC 131 last Saturday. Moments before finishing, though, the fighter landed a knee to the face of his opponent, who had three limbs touching the ground at the time, making it an illegal move. While the event was still underway it was confirmed the result would be scrutinized.

So this Wednesday the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission announced that the result has indeed been overturned. That is, the bout ended in a no contest, with neither a winner nor loser. The curious part is that this winnerless bout was voted best of the night, earning the two participants an extra 50,000 dollars each.

Charles previously remarked about the possibility of the result being overturned, which he disagreed with, to GRACIEMAG.com:

“The knee was not decisive. It got him in the eye and he kept coming at my legs. What decided the fight was the rear-naked choke; he continued normally after the knee; I didn’t do it on purpose.”

No entanto, pouco antes de finalizar, o lutador acertou uma joelhada no rosto do oponente, que estava com três apoios no chão, o que torna o golpe ilegal. Ainda durante o evento foi confirmado que o resultado estava sub judice.

Enfim, nesta quarta-feira a Comissão Atlética da Pensilvânia divulgou que o resultado da luta foi anulado. Ou seja, o combate terminou em no contest, sem vencedor ou perdedor. A curiosidade é que a luta, sem vencedor, foi eleita a melhor da noite, o que valeu 50 mil dólares para cada atleta.

Charles comentara com o GRACIEMAG.com a possibilidade da mudança de resultado, algo que discorda.

“A joelhada não foi definitiva. O golpe acertou no olho dele e ele continuou vindo nas minhas pernas. O que definiu a luta foi o mata-leão, ele continuou normalmente após a joelhada, que não foi intencional.”

Junior Cigano defeated Shane Carwin at UFC 131 last Saturday in Canada, becoming first in line for a shot at Cain Velasquez’s belt. In the statements below, the challenger to the heavyweight throne addresses his last fight, the hits, misses, and, of course, his next challenge: Cain Velasquez.

The fight

Cigano came close to getting the knockout in the first round, but in the subsequent rounds he maintained control of the action and played it safe.

“I take all my fights seriously, but this one was really important to me because there was a lot at stake. I got a bit nervous, but that was to be expected.”

“I tried putting him away in the first round but, as he’s said himself, he has a hard chin.”

“I threw a lot of jabs because I felt it was safer, it would keep me at a safe distance from him. Shane hits hard and I have to respect that.”

Judges’ decision

A lot of fans and commentators on the broadcast felt the ref should have stopped the fight in the first round, when Carwin took a barrage of punches. Cigano even looked to the ref to see what his decision would be. Referee Herb Dean allowed the action to continue. Shane stood up and fought till the end. Dana White, the president of the UFC, praised the decision to allow the run of play.

“I was prepared to fight three rounds. If the ref had stopped the fight, ok. But Shane’s a tough guy and I feel it was a good fight.”

“There, I was getting tired from hitting him so much, so I looked at him like, “Hey, stop the fight” (laughs)! And he said, “Keep going, keep going.” Shane defended well and I feel the referee made the right decision. Shane got up and continued to fight.”

Jiu-Jitsu

At the same moment Cigano was close to getting the knockout, he also risked trying a choke, as his opponent was on all fours. Was the hold poorly placed and ended up slipping out?

“I tried to finish him but didn’t have the hooks in. It was kind of slippery because of the Vaseline and I didn’t want to risk being on bottom against a guy that size, so I ended up letting go.”

“I have a good ground game. I train in that with a lot of tough guys. I know I’m know Demian Maia or Rodrigo Minotauro, but I’m tough on the ground too.”

“However, my focus will always be boxing. That’s what got me here, so that’s my priority. But I’m going to keep up to date in the other arts.”

Now the heavyweight will get a shot at the title against Cain Velasquez

“I feel my big challenge is yet to come, because Cain Velasquez is the champ. He’s proven how good he is, but I’ll be ready for him.”

“Cain’s best facet is his physical conditioning, his endurance, not to mention he’s a great wrestler. I have to train a lot. I’m learning wrestling really quickly and will try and defend his takedowns to use my boxing. I go for the knockout the whole time and it will be no different against him.”

Junior Cigano venceu Shane Carwin no UFC 131, sábado passado, no Canadá, e ficou em primeiro na fila para tomar o cinturão de Cain Velasquez. Abaixo, confira as palavras do peso pesado sobre a luta, erros, acertos e, claro, sobre o próximo desafio, que vale o título mundial.

A luta

Cigano chegou perto do nocaute no primeiro round, mas, nas outras parciais, manteve o controle e evitou se arriscar.

“Levo todas as lutas a sério, mas essa foi uma luta muito importante para mim, porque havia muita coisa em jogo. Fiquei um pouco nervoso, mas foi como esperava.”

“Tentei acabar com ele no primeiro round, mas, como ele mesmo disse, tem o queixo duro.”

“Apliquei muitos jabs porque achei que seria mais seguro, me deixaria numa distância segura dele. O Shane bate duro e tenho que respeitar isso.”

Decisão do juiz

Muitos fãs e comentaristas na transmissão acharam que o juiz deveria ter interrompido a luta no assalto inicial, quando Carwin levou muitos socos. Cigano chegou a olhar para o juiz, sem saber qual seria a decisão. O árbitro Herb Dean prosseguiu o combate. Shane se levantou e lutou até o final. Dana White, presidente do UFC, elogiou a decisão.

“Estava preparado para lutar três rounds. Se o juiz parasse a luta, ok. Mas Shane é um cara duro e acho que foi uma boa luta.”

“Ali estava cansado e tanto bater, então olhei para ele tipo “Hei, pare a luta” (risos)! E ele disse “Continue, continue”. Shane defendeu bem e acho que foi a decisão certa do árbitro. O Shane levantou e continuou a luta.”

Jiu-Jitsu

No mesmo momento que Cigano chegou perto de nocautear, também arriscou partir para o estrangulamento, já que o oponente estava de quatro apoios. Faltou ajuste e acabou perdendo a posição?

“Tentei finalizá-lo ali, mas não botei os ganchos. Estava um pouco escorregadio por causa da vaselina e não queria correr o risco de ficar por baixo contra um cara daquele tamanho, então acabei soltando.”

“Tenho o jogo de chão bom. Treino contra caras duros nisso. Sei que não sou como um Demian Maia ou Rodrigo Minotauro, mas sou duro no chão também.”

“No entanto, o meu foco sempre vai ser o boxe. Foi o que me trouxe até aqui, então é a prioridade. Mas vou me manter atualizado nas outras artes.”

Cain Velasquez

Agora o peso pesado vai ter a chance pelo título contra o campeão Cain Velasquez.

“Acredito que o meu grande desafio está por vir, porque Cain Velasquez é o campeão. Ele já provou que é muito bom, mas estarei pronto para ele.”

“O melhor de Cain é a parte física, o gás, além de ter o wrestling muito bom. Tenho que treinar bastante. Estou aprendendo o wrestling muito rapidamente e vou tentar defender bem as quedas dele para usar o boxe. Busco o nocaute todo o tempo e não vai ser diferente contra ele.”

Velasquez, invicto no MMA (nove lutas), ainda está no estaleiro, se recuperando de uma lesão no ombro. Mas, no vídeo abaixo, os fãs podem ver um pouco da fera em ação e o que Cigano vai ter pela frente:

Durante a coletiva após os combates do UFC 131, no Canadá, o presidente da organização Dana White reforçou que a próxima luta pelo cinturão de penas vai ser entre o vitorioso da noite Kenny Florian e o atual campeão José Aldo.

Finalista da primeira edição do “The Ultimate Fighter”, lutador popular nos EUA, Kenny já fala do desafio.

“Acredito que José Aldo é um dos melhores lutadores hoje em ação e tenho muito respeito por ele”, diz.

“Sou um grande fã dele, mas acredito que o sonho de todos os lutadores do UFC é ser campeão e se testar contra o melhor. Ele é um dos melhores, então é o que eu quero”, completa o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu.

A luta no UFC 131, contra Diego Nunes, foi a estreia de Florian no peso-pena. Muitos pensaram que o americano sentiria o corte de peso, mas não foi o que aconteceu.

“Penso, honestamente, que o corte de peso foi um verdadeiro teste de disciplina. E isso me colocou num outro nível mental para fazer novamente”, analisa.

“Depois disso, acredito que qualquer coisa é fácil. Agora terei mais uma luta contra um cara duro e é o que eu quero. É por isso que estou no UFC, para lutar contra os melhores e me testar. Estou muito agradecido por isso”, encerra.

UFC 131 took the goods to Vancouver, Canada, this Saturday night. In the main event, Junior Cigano notched his seventh-straight win, his sixth in the UFC, and now he’ll get his shot at the heavyweight belt. Check out the rundown of the main card:

Junior Cigano vs. Shane Carwin

Early on, it seemed clear Carwin would rather not risk dealing with his opponent’s boxing skills, opting to try to take it to the ground. In the opening round, Cigano landed strikes handily and nearly ended it, with Shane taking an onslaught of strikes while on all fours, going into the second-round break showing heavy damage to his face. After a lukewarm second, Cigano again dominated the action in the third round, even successfully shooting for takedowns. It was the first time Carwin went a whole three rounds, but the unanimous decision win was Junior’s, and now the winner will get his shot at Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight belt.

Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes

Diego Nunes had a good first round and managed a knockdown in the waning moments. In the second, Florian found his rhythm and took the lead with takedowns. In the third, with a steady stream of blood flowing from his head, Nunes seemed to have worn out. Kenny forged ahead with the takedowns and took the unanimous decision. It was Florian’s debut as a featherweight.

Demian Maia and Mark Munoz

Demian Maia had the better start. In the first round he landed more potent strikes in the standup exchanges. In the second, the black belt seemed to have run out of gas, mainly with his takedown attempts. Munoz went on to control the fight both with takedowns and strikes. Demian tried a few attacks on the ground but to no avail. Munoz took the unanimous decisions.

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman

Olav came on strong in the first round with solid takedowns and strikes. It looked like Olav was sure to win in the second, but Herman landed a knee that set off a sequence of fight-ending strikes, taking the win by technical knockout.

Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha

Vagner had a promising start with a nice takedown. He was swimming upstream from there on out, though, as Cerrone took control of the fight with leg kicks. Pablo Popovitch black belt Rocha didn’t get to put any of his Jiu-Jitsu to work during the three rounds. Keeping out of danger with his potent leg kicks, Cerrone took the well-deserved unanimous decision.

O UFC 131 trouxe lutas movimentadas em Vancouver, no Canadá, na noite deste sábado. No principal desafio, Junior Cigano chegou à sétima vitória seguida, a sexta no UFC, e agora vai ter a chance pelo título de pesados. Confira todos os resultados e análises das lutas principais:

Junior Cigano x Shane Carwin

Nos primeiros instantes, Carwin dava a entender que não queria se arriscar contra o boxe do oponente, tentando aplicar quedas. Na primeira parcial, Cigano acertou bem com socos quando quase definiu. Shane apanhou bastante de quatro apoios e foi para o intervalo como o rosto avariado. Após segundo round morno, Cigano voltou a dominar na terceira parcial, tendo conseguido até quedar. Foi a primeira vez que Carwin lutou três rounds, mas a vitória foi por unanimidade para Junior, que agora vai ter finalmente a chance contra Cain Velásquez pelo cinturão de pesados.

Kenny Florian x Diego Nunes

Diego Nunes foi bem no assalto inicial e conseguiu um knockdown com socos nos últimos segundos. Na segunda parcial, Florian encaixou o seu jogo e aplicou boas quedas para levar vantagem. Na terceira parcial, com um sangramento na cabeça, Nunes parecia mais cansado. Kenny insistiu nas quedas e, mesmo com o brasileiro sem desistir até o fim, Kenny levou a melhor por decisão unânime. Foi a estreia de Florian no peso pena.

Demian Maia x Mark Munoz

Demian Maia começou melhor. Na primeira parcial, conectou bons golpes na trocação. Na segunda parcial, o faixa-preta pareceu se desgastar, principalmente nas tentativas de queda. Monoz passou a controlar a luta,com quedas e socos. Demian tentou alguns ataques no chão, mas não foi suficiente. Vitória de Munoz por decisão unânime.

Jon Olav Einemo x Dave Herman

Olav veio bem no primeiro round, com boas quedas e bons socos. Na segunda parcial parecia que a vitória de Olav estava garantida, mas Herman aplicou uma boa joelhada e deu início a uma sequência de golpes que o levou a vitória por nocaute técnico.

Donald Cerrone x Vagner Rocha

Vagner começou bem, tendo aplicado uma boa queda. No entanto, logo depois disso Cerrone passou a controlar a luta com muitos chutes nas pernas. Aluno de Pablo Popovitch, faixa-preta, Rocha não conseguiu impor o seu Jiu-Jitsu nos três rounds. Sem sofrer perigo, na base dos chutes, Cerrone teve merecida a vitória por decisão unânime.

Diego Nunes is stuck in a situation that to many in MMA, mainly to Brazilian fighters, is a bit of a quagmire. This evening he takes on Kenny Florian at UFC 131 in Canada. Riding a three-fight win streak and holding a record of just one loss in 17 fights, the Nova União rep could earn a shot at the UFC featherweight title, now held by teammate José Aldo.

“I always have my sights on what’s coming up next, not what could happen later. Now I’m focused on Florian and what I can do to beat him. My objective is the best and I can’t imagine, not for a hundredth of a second, what may happen after this fight. Aldo’s my brother, friend and training partner. I can’t deny that we’ve already discussed this with our coach and managers before,” Nunes said on the UFC website.

However, the task at hand is Florian, who dropped down a division for tonight’s challenge.

“Wait and have faith. For now my future holds one thing: Florian. The rest comes later and only later, if it comes,” he said.

“I know he’s a guy with all kinds of professionals to help him prepare for a new weight class, but training is training and a fight’s a fight. I can’t see him being 100% for this new division. I’ve been in it since 2008 and believe he’ll be missing something. I don’t know if it will be endurance or strength, but I see myself as having a bit of an advantage,” said “The Gun” in closing.
