After knocking out James McSweeney on his promotional debut at UFC 120, Fábio Maldonado already has a date set for his return to the world’s most famous octagon: April 2011, at UFC 130. Neither the venue nor opponent have yet been confirmed, but it will likely go down in Canada. While he awaits word on who he’ll be facing the fighter forges ahead in his training routine, even while recovering from an injured left wrist and right elbow.

“I’m in the recovery phase, I’ve been doing a lot of physical conditioning and weight lifting under the orientation of Douglas Monteiro and Paulo Manzini. I plan to show up in Canada strong,” remarks Maldonado.

Known for his knockouts, despite not being 100%, the fighter carries on working on his boxing, his forte. Could another knockout be looming on the horizon?

“Even though I’m injured, I’m still training, hitting the bags,” he warns.

On the coming 12th, Fábio Maldonado travels to Florianópolis, where he will spend ten days training with Thiago Tavares and Jefferson Teixeira.

Depois de nocautear James McSweeney em sua estréia pelo UFC na edição 120, Fábio Maldonado já tem data marcada para voltar ao octógono mais famoso do mundo: em abril de 2011, no UFC 130, provavelmente no Canadá, ainda sem adversário definido. Enquanto não sabe quem vai enfrentar, o atleta continua com sua rotina de treinos, mesmo recuperando-se das lesões no punho esquerdo e cotovelo direito  

“Como estou em fase de recuperação, tenho feito bastante preparação física e musculação sob a orientação de Douglas Monteiro e Paulo Manzini. Minha intenção é chegar mais forte no Canadá”, comenta Maldonado.

Conhecido plos nocautes, apesar de não estar 100%, o lutador segue afiando o boxe, sua principal habilidade. Será que vem mais nocaute pela frente?  

“Apesar de lesionado continuo treinando, batendo saco”, avisa.  

No próximo dia 12, Fábio Maldonado viaja para Florianópolis e fica por dez dias treinando com Thiago Tavares e Jeferson Teixeira.

After a UFC deal came from out of the blue and without even time to properly prepare for his debut, Fabio Maldonado is reaping the rewards of victory against James McSweeney last Saturday in England at UFC 120.

“Now I’m going to take a rest, go to a dude ranch and kick back! The UFC opened a lot of doors for me; I’ve received a number of offers and I’ll take the opportunity to figure it out. But next week, I’m back in training full on!” remarks Maldonado.

Following his knockout win on the debut, in a chat with GRACIEMAG.com, the fighter breaks down what he needs to improve on, comments on the thorny light heavyweight division, and reveals his dream of facing Quinton Jackson.

You let a few finishes slip away in the fight. How do you hope to fix that?

Truth is, McSweeney asked to stop when I had the americana lock, but the ref didn’t hear him and he continued. I also could have had him with the rear-naked choke, but I let him get out. What I trained hardest was grappling, but I got really nervous in the fight. I have to do some fine-tuning, of course, and work on my wrestling, too. But I don’t feel I did too bad on the ground. I may have let some positions get away, I could have finished or whatever, but it didn’t happen. Despite not having gotten the submission, I wailed on him on the ground. I have a lot to improve on in Jiu-Jitsu and standing, too. I’m going to keep working on positions because I didn’t used to do so. Now I have to work a lot on my ground game with Thiago Tavares at Ataque Duplo gym.

Your specialty is boxing. Do you feel that in the UFC that’s not enough?

This business about being complete is tricky. Everyone says that. In my case, I have to make up for everything else with my hands. Of course we have to improve on everything. I’ve been doing well in wrestling practice and been rolling well with black belts. But training is one thing and fighting another. I read an article where Babalu stressed the importance of competing. When something is on the line, the game gets tougher, there’s no letting up. Now my kicks, for example, are a crying shame. I have to improve on everything, but I also have to make my hands better. I want to hit and really strike fear in them.

In your division of the UFC, who are your favorite fighters?

Man, the light heavyweight division is the most stacked and the latest champions, aside from Lyoto, couldn’t manage to defend even once. They are top-tier fighters and it would be totally out of place for me to talk of the belt now. Although he hasn’t had good appearances in his last two fights, I like Minotouro a lot. Shogun is perhaps the best of all times at this weight. There’s also Jon Jones, Chuck Liddell, Thiago Silva, Banha, Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson… A lot of good guys.

And who of them would you like to fight?

Man, I feel Quinton Jackson is great and I’d love to fight him. It would be a great fight, wouldn’t it? I feel his wrestling’s better than mine, but my Jiu-Jitsu and boxing are better than his. It would be awesome! I only wouldn’t face Minotouro in my weight group; I’d rather leave the UFC than fight him.

What’s your analysis of your debut?

I was really nervous, afraid of getting tired and putting on a bad performance. I already had it in my head that I’d take the punishment early on. He moved around, kicked my legs, kneed my head… But I took it until it was my turn. I didn’t have much time to drop weight. I had nineteen days to droop from 106 kg (233 lbs) to 92 kg (202 lbs). I won’t be subject to that anymore.

And what about McSweeney asking out and continuing to fight? What did you think of that?

I felt it was due to my own incompetence. He said ‘stop’ twice and I ended up losing the hold. Truth is, he managed to escape, and I don’t think he even needed to ask to stop if he’d just been a little more patient. I carried on normally and called him to fight standing. I said ‘let’s settle this business on our feet.’

I’d like to say how happy I am to be in the UFC and to thank Rodrigo Minotouro and Alex Davis. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. Now can I leave out Mr. Pepe, de Santos, and Thiago Tavares, who helped me a lot.

Depois de fechar com o UFC de uma hora para outra e nem ter muito tempo para se preparar para a estreia, Fabio Maldonado colhe os louros da vitória. O triunfo foi no Ultimate 120, no último sábado, na Inglaterra, contra James McSweeney.

“Agora vou dar uma descansada, ir para um hotel fazenda e tomar uma breja! O UFC já abriu muitas portas, estou com várias propostas e aproveitarei para resolver isso. Mas, semana que vem, já volto a treinar no ritmo forte!”, comenta Maldonado.

Depois do nocaute na noite de debute, em conversa com o GRACIEMAG.com, o lutador analisa o que tem que evoluir, comenta a espinhosa categoria de meio-pesados e não esconde o sonho de encarar Quinton Jackcson.

Você deixou escapar algumas finalizações na luta. Como espera melhorar isso?

Na verdade, o McSweeney pediu para parar na chave americana, mas o juiz não ouviu e ele continuou. Também poderia ter pego no mata-leão, mas deixei escapar. O que eu mais treinei foi o chão, mas fiquei muito nervoso na luta. Tenho que trabalhar alguns ajustes, claro, e o meu wrestling também. Mas não acho que fui tão mal no chão. Apesar de perder algumas posições, poderia ter sido finalizado, ou algo assim, e isso não aconteceu. Apesar de escapar a finalização, meti a mão no chão. Tenho muito o que melhorar no Jiu-Jitsu e em pé também. Vou continuar fazendo posições, porque antes eu só rolava. Agora tenho trabalhado muito essa parte de posição com o Thiago Tavares, lá na Ataque Duplo.

Sua especialidade é o boxe. Você sente que no UFC apenas isso não basta?

Esse negócio de ser completo é difícil. Todo mundo fala isso. No meu caso, tenho que compensar na mão. Lógico que temos que tentar melhorar em tudo. Tenho ido bem nos treinos de wrestling e rolado bem com os faixas-pretas. Mas, treino é uma coisa e luta é outra. Li numa entrevista do Babalu ele ressaltar a importância de competir. Quando está valendo algo, o jogo fica mais duro, não existe aliviar em nada. Já o meu chute, por exemplo, é uma lástima. Tenho que melhorar em tudo, mas também tenho que deixar a minha mão melhor. Quero bater e, realmente, abalar.

Na sua categoria no UFC, quais são os seus lutadores favoritos?

Rapaz, essa categoria (meio-pesado) é a mais complicada e os últimos campeões, tirante o Lyoto, não conseguiram manter o cinturão em nenhuma defesa. São lutadores de nível excelente e seria até demagogia da minha parte falar em cinturão agora. Apesar de não ter se apresentado bem nas duas últimas lutas, gosto muito do Minotouro. O Shogun talvez seja o maior de todos os tempos neste peso. Também tem o Jon Jones, Chuck Liddell, Thiago Silva, Banha, Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson… Tem muita gente boa.

E qual desses gostaria de enfrentar?

Nossa, acho o Quinton Jackson muito bom e adoraria enfrentá-lo. Seria uma luta muito legal, né cara?  Acho que ele tem o wrestling melhor que o meu, mas o meu Jiu-Jitsu e boxe são superiores ao dele. Ia ser muito legal! No meu peso só não enfrentaria o Minotouro, prefiro estar fora do UFC a lutar com ele.

Como analisa a sua estreia?

Estava muito nervoso, com medo de me cansar e fazer feio. Já tinha na minha cabeça ter que segurar o castigo no início. Ele se movimentou, chutou as minhas pernas, deu joelhada na minha cabeça… Mas fui engolindo ele até que chegou a minha hora. Tive que baixar de peso em pouco tempo. Estava com 106kg e desci para 92kg em 19 dias. Não vou dar mais bobeira não.

E o fato de o McSweeney pedir para parar e continuar lutando? O que achou disso?

Acho que foi incompetência minha. Ele falou duas vezes ‘stop’ e acabei perdendo o golpe. Na verdade, ele conseguiu escapar do encaixe, e acho que nem precisava ter pedido para parar se tivesse tido um pouco mais de paciência. Segui normalmente e chamei ele para lutar em pé. Disse ‘vamos resolver essa parada em pé’.

Gostaria de dizer que estou muito feliz por estar no UFC e agradecer ao Rodrigo Minotauro e Alex Davis, sem eles não estaria lá. Também não posso esquecer do Sr. Pepe, de Santos, e do Thiago Tavares, que me ajudaram muito.

The UFC raised its octagon in England this Saturday, providing a stage for a good number of the United Kingdom’s fighters. However, the 120th installment of the event didn’t prove to be the best for the hometown, with its representatives suffering a lot of losses. On the live broadcast, though, Michael Bisping saved the day, in the main event of the evening.

Indeed, there was no lack of action in the last fight on the card. Bisping and Japan’s Yoshihiro Akiyama’s encounter played out mostly on the feet. The Englishman got the best of the three-round affair, but Akiyama would not yield. In the final round, Bisping again landed with heavy shots and mixed in some high kicks. Akiyama tried to respond in kind and went all or nothing in the waning moments. But it was too little too late, and the hometown hero took the fight by unanimous decision.

Another hometown boy, James Wilks, lost for the second time in the organization, to Claude Patrick. The loss came by way of unanimous decision. After a draw between France’s Cheick Kongo and the USA’s Travis Browne, it was Mike Pyle’s turn to rain on the local fans’ parade, beating the until-then unbeaten John Hathaway, who amassed thirteen wins before the setback.

When he faced Georges St.-Pierre for the belt back in March, Dan Hardy wriggled out of the champion’s submission holds. This time around, though, in the co-main event, he couldn’t get around the knockout he suffered at the hands of Carlos Condit, losing in the first round.

Besides Michael Bisping, another English win was provided by Rob Broughton over Brazil’s Vinicius “Spartan”. Check out the coverage here.

UFC 120 set up shop in England this Saturday, and opened with a big win from Brazil’s Fabio Maldonado, making his promotional debut.

The boxing specialist stuck with his roots. With Thiago Tavares in his corner, Maldonado knocked out local boy James McSweeney in the opening fight of the card. The win came at 0.48 minutes of the third round. With the result, the Brazilian makes it to the eighteenth win on his record, which also counts three losses.

O UFC montou seu octagon na Inglaterra, neste sábado, com muitos representantes do Reino Unido. Entretanto, a 120ª edição do evento não foi das melhores para os ingleses, com muitas derrotas. No card transmitido ao vivo,  salvou a pátria Michael Bisping, na luta principal.

Aliás, não faltou ação no último combate da noite. Bisping e o japonês Yoshihiro Akiyama fizeram uma luta com muita trocação. Nos três rounds, o inglês foi melhor, mas Akiyama não se entregou. Na última parcial, Bisnping novamente conectou bons socos e variou com chutes altos. Akiyama tentou responder e partiu com tudo para cima nos últimos segundos. Mas já era tarde, e a vitória foi para o inglês por decisão unânime.

Atleta da casa, James Wilks perdeu pela segunda vez na organização em combate contra Claude Patrick. A derrota foi por decisão unânime. Depois do empate entre o francês Cheick Kongo e o americano Travis Browne, foi a vez de Miek Pyle jogar outra ducha de água fria na torcida local, com vitória sobre John Hathaway, que tinha o cartel invicto (13).

Quando enfrentou Georges St. Pierre pelo cinturão, em março, Dan Hardy se safou bem das tentativas de finalização. Entretanto, agora, na segunda luta mais importante da noite, não escapou do nocaute contra Carlos Condit. O revés veio no primeiro round.

O UFC 120 desembarcou na Inglaterra, neste sábado. Nas lutas do card preliminar, destaque para o estreante Fabio Maldonado.

O especialista em boxe não abandonou as raízes. Com Thigo Tavares ao seu lado no corner, Maldonado nocauteou o local James McSweeney no primeiro combate da programação. A vitória veio aos 48s do terceiro round. Com o resultado, o brasileiro chegou à 18ª vitória no cartel, que também conta com três derrotas.

A Inglaterra pôde comemorar com Rob Broughton. O lutador usou a luta de chão para finalizar o representante da Chute Boxe Vinicius Spartan com um mata-leão, também no terceiro round.

Getting ready for this Saturday’s UFC 120 event in England, UFC president Dana White addressed the possibility of the WEC divisions – from bantam to lightweight – being incorporated into the UFC.

On one of the WEC champions, specifically, White was more incisive, saying he’d like to see José Aldo in the UFC, perhaps in the lightweight division now dominated by Frankie Edgar.

On the subject, Aldo told GRACIEMAG.com:

“Of course I’d accept. I have what it takes to fight in the UFC, but it’s not up to me. I’d have to talk to those who work with me: Dedé (Pederneiras), my coach; and Joinha (Jorge Guimarães), my manager. Whatever they decide is always the best. But I believe I have just what it takes to fight in the division above mine. Wouldn’t be a problem at all.”

Nos preparativos para o UFC 120, que acontece neste sábado, na Inglaterra, e conta com transmissão ao vivo do canal Combate, o presidente do UFC, Dana White, falou sobre as possibilidade das categorias do WEC, que vão do peso leve ao pluma, integrarem o UFC.

Sobre um dos campeões do WEC, especificamente, White foi mais incisivo. O carequinha quer ver José Aldo no UFC, quem sabe entre os pesos leves, categoria hoje dominada por Frankie Edgar.

Sobre isso, Aldo já falou aqui no GRACIEMAG.com:

“Aceitaria, com certeza. Tenho plenas condições de lutar no UFC, mas não depende apenas de mim. Teria que conversar com as pessoas que trabalham comigo, com o Dedé (Pederneiras), meu treinador, e o Joinha (Jorge Guimarães), meu empresário. O que eles decidem é sempre o melhor. Mas acredito que tenha plenas condições de lutar na categoria de cima. Não teria problema algum”.
