MMA is going through a boom in Brazil, and the UFC is leading the explosion. And according to Ancelmo Gois’s column in today’s “O Globo” newspaper, now the event will be broadcast live at cities across the country, like Salvador, Recife, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Fortaleza.

The first showing will be – you guessed it – for the August 27 UFC Rio show, and, according to the columnist, tickets go on sale today over Ingresso.com.br.

Such live broadcasts in cinemas have been going on since UFC 111 last year and even some UFC stars have been seen in attendance, as a way of marketing the effort. So cinema goers in Brazil now can ask themselves the following question: will I be sitting next to some fighter when I attend?

A expressão “pipocar” no MMA vai ter outro sentido no Brasil. O UFC, agora, vai ser exibido ao vivo nos cinemas da rede UCI, em seis capitais do país, Salvador, Recife, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Fortaleza. A informação é da coluna de Ancelmo Gois, no jornal “O Globo” de hoje.

O “UFC Sem Limites” deste sábado, dia 27, traz um momento inesquecível do maior evento de MMA do mundo no quadro “Sem Limites para a História”. As lendas Rashad Evans e Forrest Griffin se enfrentaram na luta principal da 92ª edição do Ultimate Fighting Championship, que aconteceu em Las Vegas, em dezembro de 2008. O confronto foi válido para o cinturão dos meio-pesados e, definitivamente, entrou para a história do UFC.

O programa traz ainda mais dois embates eletrizantes. O encontro da revelação dos meio-pesados Joe “Bones” Jones com Vladimir Matyushenko, no recente UFC Live.

O “UFC Sem Limites” vai ao ar à meia-noite, na madrugada de sábado para domingo, e é apresentado por Cris Lyra e Fernando Navarro, com comentários de Eder Reis.

Apontado como um dos melhores lutadores em todos os pesos do MMA atual, Georges St. Pierre segue imbatível entre os meio-médios do UFC. Contra o inglês Dan Hardy, no UFC 111, foi mais um passeio do canadense. 

Entretanto, se para muitos a vitória incontestável seria apenas motivo para comemoração, não é o caso de GSP. Mesmo num grande triunfo, o lutador observou falhas no jogo. Mais de uma vez, principalmente numa justa chave Kimura, chegou perto da finalização contra Hardy. No entanto, não conseguiu fazer o oponente dar os três tapinhas.   

A evolução técnica, a busca pela perfeição – ou algo próximo disso -, é o principal combustível do campeão. No vestiário, logo após a vitória, St. Pierre conversou com os treinadores Renzo Gracie e John Danaher, que o ajudaram nos treinamentos para o combate.   

“A primeira coisa que ele fez após a luta foi pedir para mostrar o que houve de errado. O porquê de não ter finalizado”, disse Renzo. 

O Gracie corrigiu algumas questões referentes ao posicionamento, ângulo e distribuição de peso. Pequenos detalhes que podem fazer diferença num momento crucial. Mas não deixou de elogiar GSP, que fez por merecer a faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu na apresentação.   

“Sei que da próxima vez ele não vai cometer tal erro. Foi uma luta incrível, ele não parou por um segundo”, finalizou Renzo.

Widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of present day, Georges St.-Pierre seems unbeatable in the UFC welterweight category. Against England’s Dan Hardy, at UFC 111, it was another walk in the park for the Canadian.

Nevertheless, if for most an undisputable win would be grounds for celebration, that is not the case with GSP. Even after such triumph, the fighter spotted flaws in his game. More than once, most notably with a tight kimura lock, he got close to finishing off Hardy. He just wasn’t able to coax the three taps out of his opponent, though.

Technical evolution, the pursuit of perfection – or something of the sort –, is a champion’s fuel. In the dressing room, right after his win, St.-Pierre discussed where he had failed with coaches Renzo Gracie and John Danaher, who had helped him train for the bout.

“The first thing he did after the fight was ask to be shown where he went wrong. The reason for his not getting the submission,” said Renzo.

The Gracie corrected some issues regarding positioning, angle and weight distribution. Tiny details that can make the difference at the crucial moment. But he had no lack of praise for GSP, and claimed GSP lived up to his rank of Jiu-Jitsu black belt with his performance.

“I know that next time he won’t make the mistake. It was an incredible fight; he didn’t stop for a second,” said Renzo in finishing.

Thiago “Pitbull” Alves was set to fight March 27 at UFC 111, where he would have faced Jon Fitch. However, a routine pre-fight resonance exam revealed a problem with an artery in the brain of the fighter, who was pulled from the bout.

The brain surgeon who operated Pitbull, Dr. Borhan Atassi, commented on the situation. An acquaintance of Marcelo Garcia, the doctor answered a request from the Alliance ace who has trained at the ATT in the past to examine Thiago. After determining the seriousness of the case, the doctor performed surgery and was pleased with the prognosis, saying the fighter will likely return to training within the next three weeks. According to the specialist, though, it is truly a serious, high-risk ailment, which could even have proven fatal during a fight.

Dr. Borhan went on to applaud the UFC for their performing such preventive exams on the athletes.

Despite Shane Carwin’s jaw-dropping knockout of Frank Mir, grappling marked UFC 111 this Saturday in New York. George St-Pierre demonstrated a well-refined Jiu-Jitsu game, while Ricardo Almeida, Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino and Rousimar Toquinho came up with clinical finishes. The big winner was Renzo Gracie, whose toothy smile said it all, as he watched on from ringside.

Arm of rubber

Georges St. Pierre’s superiority on the ground was apparent throughout his five rounds against Dan Hardy, ending in a unanimous decision. However, what marked the welterweight-title dispute was the elasticity of Hardy’s arms. In the first round the Englishman survived a cringe-worthy armbar. He also impressed with his resistance to the kimura lock in the fourth, which looked ready to snap. A Bruno Fernandes black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, GSP showed just how sharp his wrestling and BJJ are. He got the takedown in every which way and demonstrated polished ground skills. Hardy held in there, but he’ll have some sore arms. GSP, by the way, headed straight to locker room afterwards to practice submission adjustment with John Danaher.

Carwin takes a joy ride

Frank Mir dreamed of facing Brock Lesnar for a third time. He’ll have to wait. His fight with Shane Carwin was worth the interim belt and was thus scheduled for five rounds. It lasted but a few minutes, though. After getting pressed up against the fencing by Shane, Mir took a powerful punch and felt it. Carwin followed up with a merciless beating until the referee intervened, all in the very first round.

If the fight were to hit the ground, who would have said that the advantage would not be Fabrício Morango’s, a black belt from Gracie Humaita? Morango started better, applying a beautiful takedown and taking the local star’s back. But Ricardo Almeida’s former student rallied and prevailed. Batman mounted, choked and, after taking the back, finished off his Brazilian counterpart with a rear-naked choke. All in the second round.

Walk in the park for Fitch

Substituting Thiago Alves, who was vetoed by the athletic commission a few days before the event, Ben Saunders did his best to hold out against Jon Fitch. However, his enthusiasm and energy weren’t enough to win. Fitch came in and unleashed his striking and takedown power to punish his opponent from top position, dropping an onslaught of elbows in the final round. In the end he took a well-deserved victory by unanimous decision.

First-rate Jiu-Jitsu

Two Jiu-Jitsu black belts entered the octagon and left victorious. Rousimar Toquinho allowed Tomasz Drwal no breathing room, slapping on a heel hook 45 seconds into the affair. Ricardo Almeida, though, had a little more work to do, but also got the finish against Matt Brown, with a rear-naked choke in the second round. On the way to the submission hold, “Big Dog” adjusted a body triangle from Brown’s back that was key in his not losing the position. Great display of ground technique from both fighters in Jim Miller’s close victory over Mark Bocek.

Apesar do impressionante nocaute de Shane Carwim sobre Frank Mir, a luta de chão marcou o UFC 111, em Nova Jersey, neste sábado. George St. Pierre apresentou um Jiu-Jitsu de primeira, enquanto Ricardo Cachorrão e Rousimar Toquinho conseguiram boas finalizações. Quem gostou foi Renzo Gracie, que viu tudo de pertinho e foi focalizado num tremendo sorriso. Confira como foi o show:

Um braço de borracha

Apesar da nítida superioridade de Georges St. Pierre nos cinco rounds contra Dan Hardy, o que valeu a decisão unânime dos jurados, impressionou na disputa de cinturão meio-médio a elasticidade nos braços de Hardy. No primeiro round, o inglês sobreviveu a um armlock muito justo. Também marcou a resistência numa chave Kimura, na quarta etapa, encaixadíssima. Faixa-preta do brasileiro Bruno Fernandes, GSP mostrou que o wrestling e o Jiu-Jitsu estão muito afiados. Quedou de todas as maneiras e apresentou um chão bem trabalhado. Hardy teve muita disposição, mas os braços – aposto – ficarão bem doloridos.

Carwin brinca com Frank

Frank Mir tinha o sonho de enfrentar Brock Lesnar. Terá de esperar. A luta contra Shane Carwin era válida pelo cinturão interino de pesados, programada para cinco assaltos. No entanto, durou poucos minutos. Depois de ser prensado nas grades por Shane, Mir sofreu um potente soco e sentiu. Carwin continuou batendo, sem piedade, até o árbitro intervir, ainda na primeira parcial.

Pellegrino bom de chão

Se a luta fosse para o chão, quem diria que a vantagem não seria de Fabrício Morango, faixa-preta da Gracie Humaitá? Mas quem levou a melhor no solo foi Kurt Pellegrino. Apesar de Morango chegar perto de definir no assalto inicial, o americano montou, sufocou por cima, e, depois de pegar as costas, finalizou com um mata-leão. Tudo isso no segundo round.

Passeio de Fitch

Substituto de Thiago Alves, vetado pela comissão atlética poucos dias antes do evento, Ben Saunders tentou resistir contra Jon Fitch. Entretanto, garra e disposição não foram o suficiente para vencer. Fitch veio bem na trocação, abusou das quedas e castigou por cima, ao chão, principalmente com cotoveladas no último assalto. No fim, a merecida vitória por decisão unânime.

Jiu-Jitsu de primeira

Dois faixas-pretas da arte suave entraram e saíram vitoriosos do octagon nos primeiros combates. Rousimar Toquinho não deixou Tomasz Drwal respirar e, em apenas 45 segundos, finalizou com uma chave de calcanhar. Ricardo Almeida, o cachorrão, teve um pouco mais de trabalho, mas também finalizou. Contra Matt Brown, definiu com um mata-leão no segundo assalto.

Never in the history of the UFC has a card gathered so many stellar black belts. If the statement is an exaggeration or whether they will prevail, is what viewers want to know in New York and neighboring New Jersey, which hosts the show today at the Prudential Center in Newark.

The main expectation of this spring Saturday in the U.S. is to see what kind of lesson 77kg champion Georges St-Pierre (19w, 2l) will teach challenger Dan Hardy (23w, 6l), an Englishman who presents danger despite his loose tongue .

Hardy comes into the title fight on a high after overcoming sharp wrestler Mike Swick at UFC 105, but GSP has more up his sleeve than just takedowns. A black belt in Jiu-Jitsu under Bruno Fernandes from Gracie Barra Montreal, and in karate as well, the Canadian superstar has the right opponent to put on a great display of Jiu-Jitsu.

Part of the press presents a “Rush” Saint-Pierre victory a given, pointing to a future fight between Hardy and Josh Koscheck being a classic. But, wait, respect is the challenger and his game today.

The ground may also be the easiest route for Frank Mir (13w, 4l), against overwhelming Shane Carwin (11w, 0l), in a heavily anticipated bout worth the interim heavyweight belt. Whoever wins will face the brute force of Brock Lesnar, in a title bout promising to be war. A Ricardo Pires Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Mir is one of the best representatives of the art in the Octagon, and will test Carwin’s submission defense. If there’s time, of course, because the undefeated knockout artist from Denver usually ends his contests in little over a minute, like he did against Gabriel Gonzaga.

Also live on pay-per-view, two ground specialists Fabricio “Morango” Camoes (10w, 4l, 1d) and Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino (14w) make for an interesting matchup. Morango proved his worth in 2006 by winning an MMA lightweight tournament with three fights in one night, at Super Challenge in Sao Paulo. The champion of the weight group above was Demian Maia, but Morango took a longer route and only now made it onto the main card of UFC, after a promising draw with Caol Uno and due to problems in the medical exams of Thiago Pitbull, who found out the day before he would no longer face Jon Fitch. A new test should confirm that all is well with the ATT athlete, as he himself guarantees.

Last year Morango competed at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, however untrained, while Kurt loves to test himself in the ADCC. The one with their Jiu-Jitsu up to date wins today and advances.

Another black belt fun to watch on this card is Nate Diaz (11w, 5l), who has alternated between beautiful submission wins and decision losses. Which Nate will enter the Octagon today?

Based in New Jersey, Rio de Janeiro native Ricardo “Cachorrão” Almeida (11w, 3l) returns vs. Matt Brown (11w, 7l) live on Spike TV, and a submission would do the fighter well in his welcome to the welterweight division, looking to return to the main card in the presence of his fans and students.

Now Rousimar “Toquinho” has his work cut out for him in Tomasz “Gorilla” Drwal (17w, 2l) seeking to prove that his Jiu-Jitsu can still delight, and trying to strengthen the prophecy of his coach Murilo Bustamante, who said “Toquinho will be UFC champion some day. The Brazilian can start paving the way in New Jersey.

Nunca na história do UFC um card trouxe tantos faixas-pretas de tamanho quilate. Se a afirmação é um exagero ou se eles vão prevalecer, é o que desejam saber os espectadores em Nova York e na vizinha Nova Jersey, que sedia o show de hoje,  no Prudential Center, em Newark.

A expectativa principal deste sábado de primavera nos EUA é ver que tipo de lição o campeão até 77kg Georges Saint-Pierre (19v, 2d) vai aplicar no desafiante falastrão Dan Hardy (23v, 6d), um inglês perigosíssimo em pé apesar da língua solta.

Hardy vem com moral após superar o wrestling afiado de Mike Swick no UFC 105, mas GSP tem muito mais na manga do que meras quedas. Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu da Gracie Barra Montreal, de Bruno Fernandes, além de karateca, o superastro canadense tem o oponente certo para fazer uma grande exibição de Jiu-Jitsu.

Parte da imprensa especializada dá como favas contadas a vitória de “Rush” Saint-Pierre, apontando uma futura luta entre Hardy com o também porradeiro Josh Koscheck como um clássico. Mas calma lá, respeite-se o desafiante e seu jogo hoje.

O chão também pode ser o caminho mais fácil para Frank Mir (13v, 4d), contra o avassalador Shane Carwin (11v, 0d), em luta bastante aguardada que vale o cinturão interino dos pesos pesados. Quem vencer enfrenta a massa bruta Brock Lesnar, e a guerra é boa. Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu de Ricardo Pires, Mir é um dos melhores representantes da arte no Octagon, e vai testar a resistência de Carwin às finalizações. Se tiver tempo, claro, pois o nocauteador de Denver costuma terminar suas lutas em um minuto e pouco, como fez contra Gabriel Napão.

Também ao vivo no pay-per-view, os dois especialistas em chão Fabricio Camões “Morango” (10v, 4d, 1e) e Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino (14v, d) fazem duelo interessante. Morango em 2006 já provou seu valor no MMA ao vencer paradas duríssimas em torneio de pesos leves com três lutas na mesma noite, no Super Challenge em São Paulo. O campeão do peso de cima foi Demian Maia, mas Morango pegou um caminho mais longo e só agora chegou ao card principal do UFC, após um empate promissor com Caol Uno e devido a problemas no exame médico de Thiago Pitbull, que soube na véspera que não iria mais enfrentar Jon Fitch. Um novo exame deve confirmar que está tudo bem com o atleta da ATT, como o próprio garante.

Ano passado, Morango chegou a lutar o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu destreinado mesmo, enquanto Kurt adora se testar no ADCC. Quem estiver com o Jiu-Jitsu em dia vence hoje e avança.

Outro faixa-preta divertido de assistir presente no card é Nate Diaz (11v, 5d), que tem alternado belas finalizações com derrotas na decisão dos jurados. Que Nate entra no Octagon hoje?

Radicado em Nova Jersey, o carioca Ricardo “Cachorrão” Almeida (11v, 3d) retorna contra Matt Brown (11v, 7d) ao vivo pela Spike TV, e uma finalização também cairia bem para o lutador que, em nova categoria, até 77kg (170 libras), busca voltar ao card principal, diante de sua torcida e alunos.

Já Rousimar Palhares “Toquinho” enfrenta o completo Tomasz “Gorilla” Drwal (17v, 2d) buscando provar que seu Jiu-Jitsu ainda encanta, e tentando fortalecer a profecia de seu técnico Murilo Bustamante, que garantiu que “Toquinho ainda vai ser campeão do UFC”. O mineiro pode começar a pavimentar este caminho a partir de Nova Jersey.
