Jiu-Jitsu coach to beasts like Forrest Griffin, Robert Drysdale was overjoyed at the last installment of the UFC, on December 12. On the occasion, he accompanied yet another fighter to win in MMA. Better  still was how Ricardo Pires black belt Frank Mir’s finish over Cheick Kongo came via guillotine choke after pulling guard, demonstrating the purest Jiu-Jitsu. In a chat with GRACIEMAG.com, Robert speaks of Mir, his recent health problems and announces that he’ll head into MMA full steam in 2010.

What did you think of Frank Mir’s performance against Kongo?

He’s improved a lot in Jiu-Jitsu, we have to hand that to him. His standup game is excellent too; standing with him is rough. He’s taking everyone down really quick. Cheick Kongo has high-caliber striking and he knocked him down quick, with one punch. Frank is training, determined, and will do anything to take on Brock Lesnar. He wants revenge, is going nuts for having lost and that’s all he talks about.

What’s it like working with Mir?

I’ve been working with Frank for nearly two years and we get along really well. It’s easy to teach him. Frank is a smart guy and you only need to show him a position once for him to get it.

Does he ever train in the gi?

We train in the gi when there’s no fight on the horizon. When there’s a fight scheduled, it’s all about specific training. For Cheick Kongo we based our training solely on his characteristics. But, that aside, we do train in the gi. Not much, but he puts on the gi and plays. It’s not a strong point of his or a main objective.

You had some health problems, but then you even did your supermatch at the ADCC. How are you?

It’s an aneurism, but I’ve already been cleared by medical exams. I went nine months without training my striking. I went to Brazil two weeks ago and the doctors cleared me. The aneurism is small, doesn’t need to be operated and there’s no risk to my life. I can be calm about it. I had an exam called an angiogram, which is specific for the problem. Now I’m waiting for the result to be translated into English to present to the athletic commission in the United States, for approval.

Athletic Commission? So you want to fight MMA?

I want to do three muay thai fights before doing MMA. I want more experience standing to get the feel for it, take some blows to the face. I want to do muay thai fights with knees and elbows. At around March, I plan to make my professional MMA debut. I’m not going to stop over Christmas and we’re training hard, Forrest Griffin, Frank Mir and me. Frank fought on Saturday and we were already training again on Tuesday. Forrest, even with a broken foot, is training and we’re all helping out. I haven’t stopped since the ADCC and 2010 will be my year. I had health problems and now I want to kick butt.

BJ Penn manteve o cinturão dos pesos leves contra Diego Sanchez de forma brilhante, na madrugada de sábado, no UFC 107, em Memphis, Tennesse.  Após cinco rounds de luta,  o haviano não deixou dúvidas sobre o título de melhor lutador até 70kg do Ultimate.

O aniversariante do dia presenteou a si mesmo com a vitória no quinto round (aos 2min 37 segs) e o público por uma exibição impecável, praticamente um colírio para os olhos dos fãs de MMA. BJ deu show de trocação.

Logo no comecinho da luta, partiu para cima de Sanchez de forma avassaladora e deixou o público sem ar com potente soco de direita, que levou seu oponente à lona rapidamente. Grogue, Sanchez precisou de alguns segundos para se recuperar e voltar a si, enquanto BJ Penn o socava. Por muito pouco o havaiano não despachou o faixa-marrom de Saulo Ribeiro em poucos segundos de combate. Por sorte, o árbitro não interrompeu.

Este seria apenas um aperitivo do que estava por vir. Superior em todos os cinco rounds, BJ Penn mostrou que está com um soco de direita afiadíssimo e não deu espaço para Sanchez achar seu jogo. No segundo round, o americano bem que tentou encontrar Penn, mas não conseguiu. O haviano aproveitou para jogar de modo inteligente no contra-ataque  e castigou mais um pouco seu adversário, o fazendo sangrar na orelha direita.

No terceiro round, Sanchez tentou quedar Penn, mas o haviano faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu mostrou-se eficaz nas defesas de quedas. A torcida foi ao delírio ao gritar seu nome em coro: “BJ! BJ! BJ!”. No quarto round, Sanchez não conseguiu achar BJ mais uma vez e recebeu vaias da torcida numa nova tentativa de quedar o havaiano.

Para deixar o público ainda mais de queixo caído, BJ desferiu plástica canelada em Sanchez e abriu uma cratera no supercílio do americano, que continuou a lutar bravamente, mas sangrando muito. Sem ver o tamanho do corte feito em Sanchez, o árbitro deixou a luta seguir. BJ então partiu para cima e pôs um ponto final na defesa de seu cinturão dos leves  com uma sequência de socos enquanto Sanchez estava agachado. Final de combate, BJ campeão dos leves. Sanchez, terá que mostrar muito mais para tirar o cinturão do havaiano.

Frank Mir também se mostrou bastante superior ao adversário francês Cheick Kongo. O ex-campeão dos pesos pesados demorou apenas um minuto para finalizar e apagar Kongo com uma guilhotina.
“Estou realmente dando duro para ser campeão neste esporte”, declarou ao repórter Joe Rogan. Mir mandou recado a Brock Lesnar e demonstrou interesse em retomar seu cinturão.

Na noite em que o foco do Ultimate 107 do Tenesse esteve na disputa do cinturão dos leves entre Bj Penn x Diego Sanchez e na luta entre Frank Mir x Cheik Kongo,  quatro brasileiros estiveram em ação no card preliminar do evento de Dana White.  E os resultados não foram  favoráveis ao Brasil.  Apenas Rousimar Toquinho se saiu bem contra Lúcio Linhares.

Era a luta que marcava a estreia de Lúcio Linhares no UFC e Rousimar Palhares “Touquinho” não deu boas-vindas ao compatriota, finalizando Linhares com uma chave de calcanhar aos 3min 21segs do 2 R.

Apesar do incentivo  da torcida brasileira, o “Golden Boy” Ricardo Funch conheceu na noite de 12 de dezembro,  sábado, sua primeira derrota da carreira ao topar com o americano Johny Hendricks. Ambos estavam invictos com 7 lutas no cartel de MMA, mas quem saiu feliz do combate foi Hendricks, que venceu Funchs na decisão unânime dos juízes 30-27, 30-27 e 30-25.

Outro dissabor para os brasileiros, foi o nocaute sofrido pelo cearense Wilson Gouveia aos 3min 03 segs do primeiro round. A luta começou quente, com intensa trocação, mas Gouveia não resistiu ao upper de Alan Belcher e foi à lona. O árbitro interrompeu o confronto e Gouveia amargou sua segunda derrota consecutiva em 2009. A primeira foi contra Nate Marquardt.

After a memorable UFC Fight Night last April in Nashville, the UFC returns to the state of Tennessee, to provide fans with another mixed martial arts spectacle.

Lightweight champion BJ Penn faces his toughest test in the under 70kg division, Diego Sanchez. The show will be held live in the FedEx Forum in Memphis, on Saturday, December 12.

“Sometimes it takes an athlete years to find out in which division he is best,” said UFC president Dana White. “I think BJ Penn and Diego Sanchez finally found their homes in the lightweight division. It will be the best performance from Penn and Sanchez ever seen,” Dana adds.

Unbeaten in the lightweight category for eight years, with nine finishes in ten wins, Hawaii’s BJ Penn has overcome such top-caliber opponents as Joe Stevenson, Sean Sherk and Kenny Florian. At 30 years of age, the lightweight champion and former welterweight champion defended his title against Florian in August of this year, at UFC 101, displaying the best form of his career. He beat his opponent with a 4^th-round rear-naked choke in an impeccable performance.

Another challenge has arisen in Penn’s career. This Saturday he faces Sanchez, the winner of the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter”. “I’m anxious to defend this title. I know what kind of athlete Diego Sanchez is and that’s why I trained so much. This will be a great test,” said the lightweight champion.

Diego Sanchez reinvented himself as a true fighting machine. At 27, the New Mexico native has collected superb wins against Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida, since dropping divisions. The fight with Penn marks his first title challenge.

“I always wanted to fight the best fighters. I’ve worked hard for that and I’ll finally have a title challenge. I’m training harder than ever and I expect a war in the octagon,” said Sanchez.

And there’s more. UFC 107 also features two-time heavyweight champion Frank Mir’s return to the octagon in pursuit of a third title in the most difficult division in the championship. Mir won three of his last four fights, beating Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira, Brock Lesnar (in February of 2008) and Antoni Hardonk. Nevertheless, his last outing was marked by a crushing loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 100. He will need, therefore, to catch his breath against the devastating attack of opponent Cheick Kongo.

“I’m coming off a loss and I definitely want to get back on the path to the title. This will be a great challenge since Cheick Kongo is one of the best of the UFC,” said Mir.

Like his adversary, Cheick Kongo won three of his last four fights, having beaten Antoni Hardonk, Mostapha Al Turk and Dan Evenson, and comes off a loss to Cain Velasquez. Kongo knows a win over a star like Frank Mir could get him closer to the belt. “In the UFC you aren’t given easy opponents. But when you face a former champion at Frank Mir’s level you expect the toughest fight of your career. It will be a classic,” said Kongo.

Numa seqüência de cinco vitórias, Lucio Linhares estréia neste sábado no UFC 107, no Tennessee. O Espartano, como é chamado, terá pela frente na primeira apresentação pela organização o compatriota Rousimar Toquinho, conhecido pelo forte Jiu-Jitsu. Mas nada que assuste Linhares.

“Eu sei que o Toquinho é um fenômeno, mas estou em grande fase. Venci minhas últimas cinco lutas e levarei isso para dentro do octógono”, adianta a fera, em entrevista ao site oficial do UFC.

Toquinho não luta desde janeiro, depois que teve de tratar uma contusão. Sem se importar por encarar outro brazuca no cercado, o representante da BTT está louco para entrar em ação.

“Rapaz, não vejo a hora de chegar lá e lutar. Estou doido, porque tem muito tempo que estou afastado. Não agüento mais esperar”, disse ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Precavido com o perigoso oponente, Linhares promete empenho para não dar bobeira na estréia.

“Não quero ficar esperando, porque ele pode tentar me surpreender com algo que as pessoas não estão esperando. Essa é uma das razões para ir com tudo para cima dele. Sei que tenho um bom Jiu-Jitsu para enfrentar qualquer um no UFC, até mesmo porque essa é a hora da verdade para mim”, encerra.

“Belcher is super strong, has good Jiu-Jitsu and sharp muay thai. I trained a lot and, God willing, everything will go well for me,” he is quoted as saying on the UFC website.

“I feel this will be a good fight because our styles are similar. But the fact that we are both coming off losses is further motivation,” he adds.

A former light heavyweight, Gouveia will fight at middleweight. The change of division could set him up to face Anderson Silva. Nevertheless, the American Top Team representative discards a confrontation with the current champ. At least for the time being.

“I’m conscious of the fact I’m not ready to face a guy of the caliber of Anderson Silva. For that reason I’m trying to improve as a fighter, not just technically, but psychologically as well,” remarks the Brazilian, who spares no praise for the current champion.

“It’s one thing for someone to think he can beat the champion, but to win is completely different. Anderson is the champion because he’s the best, period. Of course one day he’ll lose the belt, but by the time that happens a lot of competitors will show confidence they can beat him and, when fight time comes, they won’t be able to accomplish what they promised to,” he says in finishing.
