Peso pesado da família Gracie, Rolles mostrou estar em dia com o Jiu-Jitsu e voltou a finalizar no MMA japonês, mais uma vez no primeiro assalto. No último réveillon, o filho mais velho da lenda Rolls Gracie finalizou o local Yusuke Kawaguchi com um katagatame ou triângulo de mão – golpe que usou para vencer quatro de suas oito vitórias no MMA.

O professor carioca radicado em Nova Jersey comentou o triunfo no Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye, realizado em Tóquio.

GRACIEMAG.com: Como nos velhos tempos, o Japão voltou a receber a família Gracie para uma luta. Como foi viajar com Renzo e Daniel para mais um compromisso, desta vez no Ano Novo no Japão?

ROLLES GRACIE: Sempre sonhei em lutar no Japão. Já tinha ido lá duas vezes antes, mas apenas para ver o Ryan lutar no Pride. Desde então isso se tornou um sonho para mim. Foi uma honra, e uma experiência muito boa. O público é algo especial. Lá ninguém vaia, mesmo se não estiver acontecendo muita coisa na luta. O japonês é um povo muito educado e respeitador.

Como foram os seus treinamentos para essa luta?

Meu camp foi bom, treinei muito para a luta. Nós estamos com um time forte aqui em Nova Jersey. Eu não me lesionei treinando e correu tudo perfeitamente no camp.

Agora você está invicto há cinco lutas. Pensa num retorno bem-sucedido ao UFC?

Acho que uma possível volta ao UFC será consequência do meu trabalho. Quando eu receber uma eventual ligação do UFC, aí pensarei no que fazer, mas por enquanto estou feliz com minha carreira. Recebi propostas de três eventos diferentes para lutar. Estou estudando qual é a melhor opção. Devo ter notícias concretas a qualquer minuto.

O peso pesado no UFC tem cada vez mais pedreiras… Tem acompanhado?

Sim, só tem pedreira, como em qualquer outra categoria. Aliás, em qualquer lugar só se encontra cara duro hoje em dia, só atleta profissional.

Você é responsável pela academia RGA de Nova Jersey. Como é conciliar a tarefa de dar aulas , administrar a academia e treinar para lutar MMA?

Eu mato um leão por dia, pois além disso tudo tenho três filhos. Não é fácil, mas tudo que eu faço é por amor aos meus filhos, então facilita muito. Meu objetivo é continuar lutando MMA. Fechei o ano de 2012 lutando, espero que em 2013 mais oportunidades apareçam.

The Gracie family’s heavyweight, Rolles Gracie, showed his Jiu-Jitsu is still up to speed when he stepped into the ring in Japan and won yet another MMA fight by first-round submission at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye in Tokyo. On New Year’s Eve, the son of the legendary Rolls Gracie tapped out Yusuke Kawaguchi with an arm-triangle choke—a move he’s used to finish four of his eight MMA wins.

The New Jersey native shared his thoughts with GRACIEMAG.com following the event.

GRACIEMAG.com: Like in the old days, Japan has again brought in a member of the Gracie family for a fight. What was it like to travel with Renzo and Daniel to fight on New Year’s in Japan?

ROLLES GRACIE: I always dreamed of fighting in Japan. I’d been there two times previously, but only to watch Ryan fight at Pride FC. Since then it’s become a dream of mine. It was an honor and a great experience. The crowd is really special. Nobody boos, even if there isn’t much going on in the fight. The Japanese are a very polite and respectful people.

How did your training for this fight go?

My training camp was good. I trained a lot. We’ve got a strong team here in New Jersey. I didn’t get hurt in training and everything went smoothly.

Now you’re riding a five-fight win streak. Are you considering a return to the UFC?

I think a possible return to the UFC would depend on the work I do. When I eventually get a call from the UFC, then I’ll think about what to do. But for the time being I’m pleased with the way my career is going. I’ve gotten offers to fight from three different events. I’m looking at which is the best option. I should have concrete news at any moment.

The UFC heavyweight division is becoming deeper and deeper. Have you been following?

Yes, they’re all tough, like in all the other divisions. In fact, these days there are tough guys everywhere you turn. All professional athletes.

You’re in charge of the New Jersey chapter of RGA academy. What’s it like to deal with teaching class, managing the academy and training for MMA?

I “kill one lion every day.” Besides that, I have three kids. It isn’t easy but everything I do I do out of love for my kids, so that helps. My objective is to continue fighting in MMA. I closed out 2012 with a fight. I hope even more opportunities will be coming my way in 2013.

Lenda do Pride e do K-1 e ex-atleta do UFC, o croata Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic retornou no melhor estilo, esbanjando no Jiu-Jitsu.

O ex-policial croata enfrentou o japonês Shinichi Suzukawa e finalizou com um justo armlock, a 1min18s do primeiro round, pelo IGF Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye, em Tóquio, no dia 31 de dezembro de 2012.

Mirko Cro Cop não lutava desde outubro de 2011, quando sofreu uma derrota por nocaute para Roy Nelson no UFC 137, em seu terceiro revés seguido na organização.

Nas outras lutas, destaque para o campeão de Jiu-Jitsu Rolles Gracie (8v, 1d), que finalizou Yusuke Kawaguchi com um triângulo, a dois minutos do primeiro round. O Gracie soma cinco vitórias consecutivas.

Já o japonês Satoshi Ishii, medalhista olímpico de judô, venceu o ex-campeão peso pesado do UFC Tim Sylvia, por decisão unânime dos jurados.

O One FC rolou nessa manhã em Quezon City, nas Filipinas. Na luta principal, Bibiano Fernandes e Gustavo Falciroli fizeram uma luta movimentada e depois de três rounds, Bibiano levou por decisão unânime dos jurados.

Nas outras lutas, Gregor Gracie finalizou Nicholas Mann com uma chave de braço no primeiro round e Rolles Gracie encaixou um mata-leão em Tony Bonello para encerrar a peleja no terceiro assalto.

Já Igor Gracie foi surpreendido por Jung Hwan Cha e acabou nocauteado na terceira etapa.

No duelo entre Andrei Arlovski e Tim Sylvia, o russo acertou um direto que fez Sylvia descer grogue. Com o americano de quatro, Arlovski mandou dois chutes ilegais. Os golpes decretaram o resultado da luta, No Contest.

In the main event at One FC today in Quezon City, Philippines, Bibiano Fernandes and Gustavo Falciroli fought a lively three rounds that resulted in Bibiano winning via unanimous decision.

Earlier in the event, Gregor Gracie tapped out Nicholas Mann with an armbar in the first round and Rolles Gracie subbed Tony Bonello with a rear-naked choke in the third.

Now Igor Gracie was less fortunate than his kindred, succumbing to Jung Hwan Cha via knockout in the third round.

In the hostile encounter between onetime UFC heavyweight champs Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia, the Belarusan landed a right that dropped a stunned Sylvia to the ground. With his American counterpart on all fours, Arlovski fired off two illegal kicks, rendering a No Contest outcome for the bout.

All the fighters on the card for this Friday’s One FC made their respective weights without much ado. When it came time for Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia, two archrivals from way back in their UFC days, to engage in the traditional staredown, though, things nearly boiled over.

Earlier, before their altercation at the scale, they crossed paths in the hotel elevator, causing the staff on duty some worry, nearly finding themselves in a crossfire.

All Arlovski did, though, was poke Sylvia in the chest and say, “You’d better be ready.” Without blinking, the former UFC champion responded, “I’m ready,” later stating that he plans to take out and retire Arlovski. Who’ll be on their feet when the dust settles on this one?

All was a good deal calmer during the other staredowns. One FC goes down tonight in Quezon City, Philippines, and is headlined by a Jiu-Jitsu-heavy main event between Brazilians Bibiano Fernandes and Gustavo Falciroli. Formerly the champion of the Dream promotion and having turned down offers from the UFC, Bibiano hasn’t laced up his gloves professionally since December; but still he feels his countryman won’t cause him too many problems.

Also a major draw for the event, three members of the Gracie family feature on the same card, something that hasn’t happened since the Pride Bushido 1 and 3 events. Rolles will be leading the clan, made up of brothers Igor and Gregor in the Asian archipelago.

Todos os lutadores escalados para o One FC desta sexta-feira bateram o peso ontem sem maiores problemas. Na hora da encarada, porém, o caldo quase entornou entre Andrei Arlovski e Tim Sylvia, arquirrivais desde os tempos do UFC.

Antes de quase saírem na mão perto da balança, os lutadores ainda bateram de frente no elevador de hotel, o que preocupou o staff do evento, que quase se viu no meio de um fogo cruzado.

Arlovksi, no entanto, apenas cutucou Sylvia no peito e disse: “É melhor você estar pronto”. Sem pestanejar, o ex-campeão do UFC respondeu: “Estou pronto”. Tim declarou que quer derrubar e aposentar Arlovski. Quem vai terminar esta de pé?

Nas outras encaradas, tudo ameno. O One FC rola hoje em Quezon City, nas Filipinas, e traz como luta principal o duelo de Jiu-Jitsu entre os brasileiros Bibiano Fernandes e Gustavo Falciroli. Ex-campeão do Dream que recusou propostas do UFC, Bibiano não calça as luvas profissionalmente desde dezembro, mas acha que não terá maiores problemas contra o compatriota.

Outros atrativos do evento são as presenças de três membros da família Gracie no mesmo torneio, o que só ocorrera antes no Pride Bushido 1 e 3. Rolles puxa a fila do clã, formada ainda pelos irmãos Igor e Gregor no arquipélago asiático.

The evening of Friday, August 31, is likely to be a special one for the Gracie clan. Three members of the Jiu-Jitsu family will see action at a single event, One FC. Waging war in the cage set up at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines, Rolles takes Tony Bonello, Igor squares off with Jung Hwan Cha, and Gregor faces Nicolas Mann.

“There will be three Gracies fighting on the same night, something that only ever happened before at Pride Bushido 1 and 3, in Japan. We like to fight; it’s another attack for the family,” says Renzo Gracie on a publicity video released this week.

“São três Gracies na mesma noite, algo que só aconteceu antes no Pride Bushido 1 e 3, no Japão. Nós gostamos da luta, é mais um ataque da família”, disse Renzo Gracie, no vídeo de divulgação lançado esta semana.

For the good of his weary body and anxious daughters, the legend Fedor Emelianenko announced his retirement last Friday after knocking out Pedro Rizzo at an M-1 Global event in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

However, when interviewed by the Inside MMA television program, the Russian myth didn’t discard a possible heavyweight fight down the road. He seems to predict that soon enough he’ll be getting that itch to put on his gloves, that keeping away from training altogether will be impossible—something typical of those who have the heart of a fighter.

“I’m not promising [a return]; anything can happen. The truth is, I know I’ll be asked if I plan to come back a lot, but the pressure doesn’t bother me,” said the fighter, who is tipped for a possible marquee fight with pro-wrestling giant Brock Lesnar, a former UFC champ who has also recently retired.

“I feel that, with time, people will come to accept my decision. The fans shouldn’t be disappointed with my decision to stop. I thank everyone who supported me. Today, I’ll say my time has come, because I have daughters growing up and I’m not around to see them. For a father who always puts his family first, that is hard to accept. Truth is, I’d like for Russia to produce new MMA stars,” he added.

Para o bem de seu corpo cansado e das filhas ansiosas, a lenda Fedor Emelianenko anunciou sua aposentadoria na última sexta-feira, após nocautear o brasileiro Pedro Rizzo no evento M-1 Global, em São Petersburgo.

Entrevistado pelo programa “Inside MMA”, no entanto, o mito russo não descartou uma nova luta entre os pesos pesados. Já parece prever que a coceira de vestir as luvas não vai cessar, e que o afastamento total dos treinos será impossível, algo típico de quem tem coração de lutador.

“Não estou prometendo (o retorno), tudo é possível. Na verdade, sei que ainda vão me perguntar muitas vezes se pretendo voltar a lutar, mas a pressão não me incomoda”, deixou no ar o lutador, que está sendo cogitado para uma grande luta contra o gigante do pro-wrestling Brock Lesnar, ex-UFC e também recém-aposentado.

“Acho que, com o tempo, as pessoas vão aceitar melhor minha decisão. Os fãs não devem ficar decepcionados com a minha decisão de parar. Agradeço a todos que me apoiaram. Hoje, eu digo que minha hora chegou, porque tenho filhas crescendo longe de mim. Para um pai que coloca a família sempre em primeiro lugar, isso é muito difícil de aceitar. Na verdade, gostaria que a Rússia formasse novos astros do MMA”, completou.

The biggest surprise to arise on the card is Tim Sylvia, who will be doing a bout of pro-wrestling. Tim was set to take on the heavy-handed Brett Rogers, who allegedly had visa problems and could not make it to Japan. According to the website Heavy.com, Sylvia accepted a match under pro-wrestling rules against K-1 star Jerome LeBanner so as not to have to sit out the event.

“The Mainiac,” who has 37 fights on his MMA record and won six of his last seven encounters, will be making his choreographed-fighting debut. Under the same rules, Josh Barnett enters the ring against Hideki Suzuki, Peter Aerts faces Kazutuki Fujita, and Kazushi Sakuraba will “fight” both Shinichi Suzukawa and Atsushi Sawada at the same time, alongside sidekick for the endeavor Katsuyori Shibata.

The night of December 31 in the Saitama Super Arena also features Bibiano Fernandes (Carlson Gracie Canada) squaring off with Rodolfo Marques (Nova União) in one of the bantamweight GP semifinals. The winner goes on to face the victor of the Antonio Banuelos-Masakazu Imanari matchup on the same night.
