The Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship, held last weekend in Rio, marked UFC bantamweight Rani Yahya’s return to BJJ competition.

Yahya, whose stellar career includes an ADCC title from ten years ago, made it to the lightweight final, where he came across Thiago “Baiano” Abreu of Checkmat.

Yahya attacked first with a single-leg. Thiago responded with an upright guillotine, later taking it to the ground. After Thiago spun, Yahya passed out. Referee Rodrigo Totti checked on Yahya and put an end to the match, just under one minute in.

Entre lutas de alto nível técnico, o Campeonato Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu Sem Kimono de 2017, realizado pela CBJJ no último fim de semana, no Tijuca Tênis Club, acabou promovendo o retorno aos dojôs da fera do UFC Rani Yahya, que foi parado em luta dramática.

Foi na final do adulto peso leve. De um lado, o casca-grossa Thiago “Baiano” Abreu, da CheckMat. Do outro, Rani Yahya, faixa-preta da Constrictor Team, campeão do ADCC em 2007 e atleta do UFC na divisão de peso-galo.

No duelo, Rani fez a primeira investida após se estudarem em pé, com um ataque no single-leg. Thiago prontamente atacou na guilhotina, ainda em pé, e foi para o chão na intenção de ajustar e liquidar a fatura.

Rani brigou para escapar do golpe, mas após o giro de Thiago o atleta do UFC acabou por apagar no golpe. O árbitro Rodrigo Totti, nosso GMIchecou Rani e ao reparar que o atleta não tinha resposta encerrou o combate, com pouco menos de um minuto de luta.

“In 2002, my sister Ana Kelly Almeida started practicing a sport called Jiu-Jitsu. Then my dad, Clayton Ferreira de Almeida, who hadn’t a clue what it was all about, bought a gi and started practicing just to accompany his daughter and find out what she was getting into. He ended up getting addicted to and fanatical about it, and after that he convinced me to practice with them. I remember the first Jiu-Jitsu magazines that he bought. At the time, he and I were fans of Marcio Pé de Pan, among others, and I never imagined that ten years later I’d be competing at a Jiu-Jitsu World Championship as a black belt and against one of our first idols in the sport.

“I had the pleasure of competing against him and knowing that I am a part of his story, since he and Comprido said that this year would be their last as competitors. Of course, besides him, I faced athletes of the highest caliber and friends of mine too. Thank God, after all these years, I managed to fulfill a dream that I always had: of being a world champion at weight and open weight—the same dream every practitioner of the art has.

“Ever since 2008 I’ve been achieving this at the other belts. I won at weight and open weight for the first time as a blue belt, and in 2009 again I won two gold medals, as a purple belt, along with Yuri Simões. In 2010, I won weight and absolute again, but this time with Antonio Carlos Junior. In 2011, on my debut as a black belt, I ended up losing in the absolute semifinal and came up short at weight, But in 2012, after dealing with numerous problems, I got focused and became closer with my buddy Lucas Leite when I went to live and train with him and everyone who lives here. Halfway through the training camp, an unexpected visitor showed up, my other buddy Raphael Chaves, who moved to California to live with us. He’s the one who helped me a lot when I moved to America in 2011.

“At the camp I was certain I’d become champion, since I trained like never before in my life and learned so much. A lot of what I learned in the days leading up to the championship was essential to my winning. Of course, my master, friend and brother Rodrigo Cavaca was also there. He’s the one who always told me I’d make it to where I am, that I’d achieve my goal.

“In the absolute final, I was losing by 4 to 0 and had already given up on the match—I was complaining of stalling. Then I looked at him. It was Cavaca who gave me the strength and showed me the way to win. He always believed in me even more than I did myself. I think in every match where I was losing or getting squashed I’d remember all the people who were part of the training camp and who were always rooting for me, whether in the Pyramid, Santos or in Catiapoã. Before going in to fight, I also remembered a talk with Alan do Nascimento: ‘Finfou, to beat me today they’ll have to choke my lights out or break something, because I’m not leaving without giving everything I’ve got.’ And that’s what I did; I didn’t give up at any moment, and after nine hard-fought matches, I managed to become the ultraheavyweight and absolute champion of the 2012 World Championship as a black belt.

“I can only thank all these people and my friends from Santos who were with me and Thiago Abreu, who was with me and was a part of numerous international titles, because everyone knows how much he helped me, besides him getting really sad that I didn’t show up for the party (laughs)! Besides him, I remember everyone who was here—there are so many names, but everyone who was a part of it knows who I’m talking about. Of course I can’t forget my number-one fan, my mother, Elisabete de Almeida! I’m so thankful to you all from the bottom of my heart, and of course to God. Thank you so much! OSSSS”

“No ano de 2002, minha irmã Ana Kelly Almeida começou a praticar um esporte chamado Jiu-Jitsu. Em seguida, meu pai Clayton Ferreira de Almeida, não sabendo do que se tratava, tratou de comprar um kimono e começou a praticar só para acompanhar a filha e saber aonde ela estava se metendo. Acabou que ele ficou viciado e fanático, e a partir daí acabou me convencendo a praticar junto com eles. Lembro das primeiras revistas de Jiu-Jitsu que ele comprou. Na época, ele e eu viramos fãs de Marcio Pé de Pano, entre outros, e nunca imaginei depois de dez anos que eu estaria lutando um Campeonato Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu na faixa-preta contra um de nossos primeiros ídolos do esporte.

“Tive o prazer de fazer uma luta com ele e saber que eu fiz parte da história dele, pois ele e o Comprido disseram que este ano foi o último para eles. Claro que, além dele, enfrentei atletas de altíssimo nível e lutei com amigos também. Graças a Deus. depois de todos esses anos. consegui alcançar um dos sonhos que sempre tive, o de ser campeão mundial no peso e na categoria aberta, que é o sonho de qualquer um que pratica essa arte.

“Desde 2008 venho conseguindo esse feito em outras faixas. Ganhei a primeira vez a categoria de peso e o absoluto na faixa azul, em 2009 novamente vieram duas medalhas de ouro, na roxa, junto com Yuri Simões. Em 2010, venci peso e absoluto de novo, só que agora com Antonio Carlos Júnior. Em 2011, na estreia de preta, acabei perdendo na semifinal do absoluto e bati na trave na categoria. Mas em 2012, depois de ter enfrentado muitos problemas, me foquei e foi onde me aproximei mais do meu irmãozão Lucas Leite, quando vim morar com ele na Califórnia e treinar com todos que moram aqui. No meio do camp, uma visita inesperada e definitiva apareceu, meu outro irmão Raphael Chaves, que se mudou para a Califórnia e veio morar com a gente, ele que me ajudou muito assim que mudei para a América em 2011.

“Nesse camp tive a certeza que eu iria ser campeão, pois treinei como nunca na minha vida e aprendi demais, muito do que aprendi dias antes do campeonato foi essencial para a minha vitória. Claro, teve ainda a presença do meu mestre, amigo e irmão Rodrigo Cavaca, ele que sempre falou que eu iria chegar até aqui, que eu iria alcançar esse objetivo.

“Na final do absoluto, eu estava perdendo por 4 a 0 e já tinha desistido da luta – comecei a reclamar de amarração. Aí olhei para ele. Foi Cavaca que me deu forças e o caminho para a vitória, ele acreditou mais em mim do que eu mesmo. Acho que em toda luta que eu estava perdendo ou sendo amassado eu lembrava de todas essas pessoas e todos que fizeram parte do camp e que sempre torceram e estavam torcendo, seja lá na Pirâmide, em Santos ou no Catiapoã. Antes de entrar para lutar, eu lembro inclusive que falei para o Alan do Nascimento: ‘Finfou, para ganharem de mim hoje vão ter de me apagar ou quebrar alguma coisa, porque não vou sair de lá sem dar tudo o que eu tenho.’ E foi o que eu fiz, não desisti em momento algum e consegui, após nove lutas duríssimas, ser campeão do Mundial 2012 no peso pesadíssimo e na divisão absoluto na faixa-preta.

“Só tenho a agradecer todas essas pessoas e meus amigos de Santos que estavam comigo, ao Thiago Abreu que sempre esteve comigo e fez parte de muitos títulos internacionais, porque todos sabem que ele me ajudou e muito, além de ele ficar muito triste porque eu não apareci na festa (Risos)! Além dele, lembro de todos que estavam aqui, são muitos nomes, mas todos que fizeram parte sabem do que estou falando. Claro que não poderia esquecer da minha fã número um, minha mãe Elisabete de Almeida! Sou muito grato a todos do fundo do meu coração e claro a Deus, muito obrigado! OSSSS”

Gilbert Durinho was stellar at the No-Gi Worlds in California last Saturday. Besides getting the finish in three out of four middleweight matches, he overcame submission wizards like Eduardo Milioli and Caio Terra in the absolute, before being stopped by Marcus Bochecha.

Tell us how your No-Gi Worlds campaign went.

I subbed Wallace Castro with a rear-naked choke in my first match. Then I beat Thiago Abreu by a takedown. In the semifinal I finished Lucas Leite with an armbar, and in the decider, I kept up the pace. After sweeping no-gi champion of Brazil Tiago Alves, I finished him with a guillotine. I also did the absolute. I beat Milioli eight to nil (back mount twice) and Caio two-two on points with one advantage point. But I stopped in the quarterfinals of the absolute, losing to Bochecha.

At weight, you stood out for getting finishes on super-tough adversaries. Did you do any special preparations to do so?

I was in Japan without my physical conditioning coach, without Ramon Lemos leading training, without the crew… So I concerned myself with finishing the matches quickly, to not run out of gas in the end. I wasn’t as sure about myself as I was in other competitions, whether I’d run out of gas, so I went for it. I had four matches and, thank God, I managed to get the finish in three. Training in Japan was great, but I trained with a lot of lower-ranked athletes and perhaps that ended up helping me. I would get a lot of submissions in training.

What are your goals for 2011?

I’ve won the World Pro and No-Gi Worlds. Now I have to get the gi Worlds. The ADCC is a other dream of mine, so I winning this no-gi title was all the more exciting. But I’m going to compete in everything next year. I want to win the European Open, the Pan, Brazilian Nationals… My focus for 2011 is to win all the championships.

Besides that, you got any other projects in mind?

First the Worlds. I took third at the last one, but I lost to Michael Langhi by an advantage point, a trifle. I feel I made a lot of mistakes in that match, but I kept on training and looking to evolve. This experience of traveling a lot, doing different types of training and then returning to Rio Claro is causing me to evolve quite a bit. I also want to make my MMA debut, but before that I have to get that world title.

Anything else you’d like to say?

I’m really happy about a lot of things. My girlfriend, Bruna Nascimento, who trains at Top Brother, became no-gi champion of Brazil. Besides that, my brother Herbert also won the No-Gi Brazilian Nationals, as a brown belt. The kids at Atos are doing awesome, Denílson Bischiliari earned his way to Abu Dhabi and Ronaldo Candido won the under-64 kg division at the World Pro qualifiers.

Gilbert Durinho teve ótima participação no Mundial Sem kimono, na Califórnia, no sábado passado. Além de finalizar em três das quatro lutas no peso médio, ainda bateu pedreiras como Eduardo Milioli e Caio Terra no absoluto, antes de ser freado por Marcus Bochecha.

Conte como foi a campanha no Mundial…
 
Na primeira luta finalizei o Wallace Castro com um mata-leão. Depois, ganhei do Thiago Abreu com uma queda. Na semifinal, finalizei o Lucas Leite com um armlock e, na decisão, mantive o ritmo. Depois de raspar o campeão brasileiro sem kimono Tiago Alves, finalizei com uma guilhotina. Também lutei o absoluto. Venci o Milioli por 8 a 0 (duas pegadas de costas) e o Caio com 2 a 2 nos pontos e  1 nas vantagens. Mas no absoluto parei nas quartas-de-final, derrotado pelo Bochecha. 

No peso, você se destacou pelas finalizações contra adversários duríssimos. Houve uma preparação especial para isso?    

Estava no Japão, sem o acompanhamento do meu preparador físico, do Ramon Lemos puxando o treinamento, de toda a galera… Então, fiquei preocupado em acabar logo com as lutas, para não faltar gasolina no final. Não tinha a certeza que tenho nas outras competições, se o gás ia acabar, e caí para dentro. Fiz quatro lutas e, graças a Deus, consegui finalizar em três. O treino no Japão foi muito bom, mas treinei com muitos atletas menos graduados e talvez isso tenha até me ajudado. Treinava chegando bastante nas finalizações.

Quais são seus objetivos em 2011? 

Já foi o World Pro e o Sem kimono. Agora esse Mundial tem que sair. O ADCC é outro sonho também e depois desse título sem kimono fiquei mais empolgado ainda. Mas vou lutar tudo no ano que vem. Quero ser campeão europeu, do Pan, Brasileiro… Meu foco em 2011 é vencer todos os campeonatos.   

Quero estrear no MMA também” Durinho

Além disso, há outro projeto em mente? 

Primeiro o Mundial. No último fiquei em terceiro, mas perdi por uma vantagem contra o Michael Langhi, num detalhe. Acho que cometi muitos erros nessa luta, mas continuei o treinamento e procurei evoluir. Essa experiência de viajar bastante, pegar treinos diferentes e depois voltar à Atos em Rio Claro  está fazendo eu evoluir bastante. Quero estrear no MMA também, mas antes disso tem que sair esse Mundial. 

Gostaria de comentar mais algo? 

Estou muito feliz com muita coisa. A minha namorada, a Bruna Nascimento, que treina na Top Brother, foi campeã brasileira sem kimono. Além disso, meu irmão, Herbert, também venceu no Brasileiro No-Gi, na faixa-marrom. A molecada da Atos está arrebentando, o Denílson Bischiliari carimbou o passaporte para Abu Dhabi e o Ronaldo Candido foi campeão no peso 64kg na Seletiva para o World Pro.

This past weekend, the Copa America 2010 was held in Lakeland, Florida, and the students of world champion Rodrigo Cavaca cruised through in style.

Marcus “Bochecha” Almeida and Thiago “Baiano” Abreu put in solid performances. The athletes from team Armory CheckMat won both the gi and no-gi absolutes, worth $1,000 a piece, having closed out with Vagner Rocha and Pablo Popovitch.

A number of top-tier athletes competed in pursuit of the payouts, and there were some great matches. Among them was Bochecha’s win over Daniel Moraes via rear-naked choke, with the score at 11 to 0, in the no-gi absolute semifinal.

Now the Cavaca students will forsake any rest to train hard for the Miami Open coming up on October 23, as well as the No-Gi Worlds on November 7, in Long Beach.

Aconteceu no último fim de semana a Copa América 2010, em Lakeland, na Flórida (EUA), e os alunos do campeão mundial Rodrigo Cavaca mandaram bem. 

Foram bem na competição Marcus Almeida, o Bochecha, e Thiago Abreu “Baiano”. Os atletas da equipe Amory Checkmat venceram os dois absolutos, com e sem kimono, que valiam US$1000 cada, tendo fechado com Vagner Rocha e Pablo Popovitch. 

Muitos atletas de primeira linha competiram em busca das premiações e houve grandes lutas. Entre elas, a vitória de Bochecha sobre Daniel Moraes, com uma mata-leão, quando o placar marcava 11 a 0, na semifinal do absoluto sem kimono. 

Agora os alunos de Cavaca, sem descanso, treinam forte para o Miami Open, que acontece no dia 23 de outubro, além do Mundial Sem Kimono, no dia 7 de novembro, em Long Beach .
