New BJJ star Nathiely Jesus has been turning heads with her performances on the mats. In less than six months as a black-belt, she has won the No-Gi Worlds and the European Championship. Her next appointment is at Fight to Win Pro 27, set for Mar. 3 in Round Rock, Texas.

Nathiely will take on Gracie Barra’s Tammy Griego. This heavyweight title bout will be a ten-minute, submission-only affair.

The co-main event will pit ADCC runner-up Bruno Frazatto against Gabriel Martins. There will be a total 20 superfights. The info comes from Flograppling.com.

Roberto Cyborg

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Tour made its stop in Los Angeles this Sunday, Oct. 18.

Hundreds of athletes gathered at the Azusa Pacific University for a whole day of great technique and thrilling matches.

Roberto Cyborg came back from a 10-0 defeat in the +94kg division final against Ricardo Evangelista to a four-win campaign for the gold medal.

He first beat Alec Baulding 6-0, then he caught Erberth Santos with a choke from the back.

In the semifinal, a last-minute sweep over the same Evangelista ,meant the spot in the final.

The gold medal match was against Andre Campos and Cyborg put hs game to work until he caught Campos’ neck.

Tammy Griego

In the female brown/black belt division, Tammy Griego needed two matches to win the open class.

First she beat Maxine Thylin 2-0 and then in the final Tammy faced Talita Alencar, defeated with another 2-0 score.

The other champions in the black belt division were:

62kg: João Miyao choked João Pedro Somalia from the back for the title.

69kg: Paulo Miyao beat Samir Chantre 5-0 for the gold medal.

77kg: Celso Venícius secured the gold medal after Roberto Satoshi dislocated his shoulder early in the final.

85kg: Tanner Rice beat Lucas Barbosa 2-1 on advantages for the gold medal.

94kg: Erberth Santos beat Evandro Nunes 10-0 for the title.

+94kg: Ricardo Evangelista beat Roberto Cyborg 10-0 for the gold medal.

In the female division, results were:

55kg: Maxine Thylin beat Talita Alencar for the gold

62kg: Mackenzie Dern beat Marina Ribeiro 2-0.

70kg: Jessica Oliveira beat Tammy Griego for the gold medal.

The final team podium was:

The open weight division for the female adult black belts was held on Saturday, March 15 prior to their weight categories. Featherweights, lightweights, middleweights, medium-heavyweights and heavyweights all joined in for exciting performances.

In the first match, middleweight and new black belt Megan Nevill of Atlanta, GA earned a win against fellow new black belt lightweight Charlene Coats of Coalition 95 by 1-1 in advantages and 1 penalty for Charlene.

Next up medium-heavyweight Rachel Demara of Big Brothers secured a kneebar on heavyweight Tammy Griego of Gracie Barra New Mexico which was her first black belt match in the gi.

Featherweight Mackenzie Dern of Gracie Humatia/Megaton went up against middle-heavyweight Talita Treta Nogueira of Gracie Elite Team and managed to sweep and stay on top for the win.

 Heavyweight Andresa Correa of Alliance managed a win by 9-4 in advantages of lightweight Fabiana Borges of Gracie Barra who stayed tough throughout the entire match.

Lightweight Beatriz Mesquita of Gracie Humaita had a bye and faced Megan Nevill. She made a swift transition to the back form closed guard and finally finished with an armbar.

On the other side of the bracket, the semi-final between Andresa and Mackenzie was decided by a guard pass in which Andresa earned her place in the final on Sunday, March 16.

The final for the open weight division between Bia and Andresa began with a pull to guard from Bia. Multiple wrist lock attempts and sweeps were made by Bia which gained her advantages. As Bia went for a triangle, she also attempted to get on top. She then went for an armbar and Andresa defended well, coming on top. She nearly made Bia turtle but Bia recovered her guard. The match ended with 6-1 in advantages in Bia’s favor making her the double gold champion of the 2014 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

A três dias do início do 18º Campeonato Mundial da IBJJF, em Long Beach, na Califórnia, a paulista Michelle Nicolini sabe onde não pode errar para conquistar mais uma medalha de ouro em Mundiais. Um dos aspectos está no pulso, como ela comentou em papo com GRACIEMAG.

Em uma de suas últimas disputas, Michelle perdeu a hora, entrou mal e perdeu a luta, como ela relembra.

Para o Mundial, a estrela da CheckMat não quer saber de atraso. Este ano, Nicolini vai encarar a disputa entre as meninas do meio-pesado, ela que ano passado venceu o peso-pena, ao superar a colega de time Marina Ribeiro.

GRACIEMAG: A categoria meio-pesado tem Hannette Staack, Fernanda Mazzelli, Tammy Griego, Talita e outras feras. Por que fez essa opção arriscada?

MICHELLE NICOLINI: A categoria está bem difícil mesmo, e é o peso com maior número de campeãs mundiais. Mas eu me coloquei nesta categoria porque sou segura, sei que posso chegar nas cabeças! O que acontece é que na faixa-preta não tem muito para onde correr, ninguém está lá de brincadeira.

No Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu você acabou perdendo a final para a Luanna, na chave de braço. O que aprendeu com a derrota, Michelle?

O lance no Brasileiro foi que as finais deveriam ter sido todas no mesmo dia, no sábado eu estava prontinha para vencer (risos). No domingo, tive um problema com o horário e me confundi, achando que as finais seriam em um certo horário e não foram. As lutas foram duas horas mais cedo do que pensei. Cheguei muito atrasada e nervosa, com medo de ser desclassificada e aí não tem jeito. Uma coisa vai puxando outra e acabei perdendo as duas finais na competição. Não tive nenhuma lesão, foi só isso mesmo. Sempre tiro lições dos meus erros e mais uma vez aprendi com a minha falta de atenção. Deveria ter conferido o cronograma várias vezes, ter me programado e chegado mais cedo ao ginásio. Sempre faço tudo isso, mas não fiz no Brasileiro e foi fatal.

O que você promete mostrar para seus fãs e admiradores na Pirâmide de Long Beach?

Sei o quanto treinei. Podem esperar o meu melhor Jiu-Jitsu, sem amarração. Este será meu décimo Mundial, e assim como no primeiro espero sair de lá com a medalha de ouro no peito. Os treinos foram ótimos, já estavam fortes no Brasil e agora nos EUA. Nesses últimos dias, o Leozinho (Vieira) tem ajustado nosso jogo, e vai deixar toda a galera com o astral lá em cima.

Abu Dhabi, a capital dos Emirados Árabes, já se prepara receber o charmoso WPJJC, campeonato profissional de Jiu-Jitsu com polpuda premiação em dinheiro. A competição rola neste fim de semana, nos dias 13 e 14 de abril.

As crianças lutam nessa quarta-feira. A pesagem dos atletas, da faixa-branca à preta, será no dia 11 de abril.

A concorrência está acirrada, com direito a superastros da atualidade. De olho na lista de inscritos e nas diferentes categorias de peso, divulgada pela organização, o GracieMag traz os principais nomes da competição.

Arizona’s premiere all-female Jiu-Jitsu tournament returns for its second installment on May 4, 2013. Headed by stand-out Nova Uniao Brown belt, 2013 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Champion, and promoter of Inspire: All Female Open Mat, Kristina Barlaan, the 2nd Copa Bela boasts a tournament committed to the growth of women in sport Jiu-Jitsu. With divisions for juveniles, adults, and newly added masters division, as well as a brown/black belt absolute pro division offering $1000 to the winner, the tournament continues to push the pace for evolution of females in our sport.

“This is an excellent opportunity for women in the sport to compete and test their skills in a tournament atmosphere. Novice competitors get introduced to the thrills of competing for the first or second time and more advanced competitors get a nice tune-up competition before the 2013 IBJJF World Championship the following month. It’s great to see the women’s Jiu-Jitsu community grow with more seminars, camps, open mats, and, more recently, tournaments dedicated to that growth. Last year, the 1st Copa Bela saw 35 competitors take to the mats, with 4 of those competitors being in the brown/black absolute pro division. A lot of people may see that number and call it small. I call it a start. The very first Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship had 200 competitors and now it’s over 3,000! Of course the Copa Bela isn’t the Pans, but why should I not believe that it has the ability to grow in the same way? If we as a community continue to support these kinds events, then it’s only natural that we will not only see an increase of women in the sport, but an overall increase in women participating in competition,” says Barlaan.

Xande Ribeiro contra Leandro Lo na final do absoluto do Mundial Sem Kimono 2012

Xande Ribeiro foi o grande vencedor do Mundial Sem Kimono 2012, assumindo o trono absoluto que era de Marcus Vinicius Bochecha.

Com seu Jiu-Jitsu clássico, “old school”, Xande mostrou que está sempre atualizado, e parou Leandro Lo, um “fenômeno da nova geração” (nas palavras de Xande) na grande final do aberto. Com sabedoria para não cair nas armadilhas da guarda de Lo, Xande esperou até cerca de oito minutos para ir com tudo numa passagem de guarda, obrigando o peso leve treinado por Cícero Costha a virar de quatro.

Xande abraçou as pernas de Lo, tirou o quadril dele do chão e emborcou o oponente, que se virou. Vantagem e ouro para Xande.

“Continuo competindo pelo prazer, pelo desafio e pela adrenalina, mas o melhor vem depois do campeonato”, disse Xande, após postar no Twitter uma foto jantando abraçado a Lo. Um sinal da amizade e do respeito próprios do esporte.

Pódio vazio

Foi uma festa completa na Pirâmide de Long Beach, com apenas um momento que destoou.

Após Augusto Tanquinho vencer “JT” Torres nos últimos segundos, graças a uma vantagem dada a Tanquinho numa decisão polêmica da arbitragem, a revolta foi grande pelo lado do time de Lloyd Irvin. JT foi embora mais cedo, sem pegar sua medalha de prata. Nem Lloyd foi lá buscar seu troféu de segunda melhor equipe do fim de semana, dois pontos atrás da Alliance.

No resto do campeonato, o time de Lloyd fez a festa, com os títulos de DJ Jackson no médio adulto, em cima de Clark Gracie, e a medalha de ouro do próprio Lloyd, no superpesado do sênior 1.

The absolute division was team Avengers’ domain. Black belts Vagner Rocha and Roberto Cyborg went through with the final to please the crowd, with Vagner catching Cyborg by the neck.
