What do you do when your opponent doesn’t let you do your thing in closed guard? If your answer is “sweep and finish him”, this video isn’t for you.

But if you find your grips are always getting unhooked and you’re not managing to sweep to make it to the back, there are some details GB Dana Point headmaster Flavio Almeida has to teach you.

To Flavio, the pivotal detail is to not let the opponent step to the side and get a knee by to pressure past guard to side-control. Ideally you will use a hook to defend the pass.
