The UFC is venturing for the first time into China and its over-a-billion-strong market, a fraction of which would do heaps for Dana White’s audience. Will the show win over the popular tastes in those parts?

With the main event between former middleweight champion Rich Franklin and Hollywood star Cung Le, the die is cast.

But before the big show can begin, the fighters had to take on another stern opponent: the scale. Official weigh-ins went down this morning, and only Hyun Gyu Lim was unable to make weight. His fight with David Mitchell has now been canceled.

This Saturday the UFC makes its first incursion into Chinese territory, pitching tent in Macau. What follows is GRACIEMAG.com’s list of the five fights on the card that are bound to get the Jiu-Jitsu crew out of their seats. The main event doesn’t even figure in the equation, to give you an idea of how potent a mix there is to come.

Which is the one you’ll make a point not to miss?

1. Thiago Silva vs. Stanislav Nedkov

It’s no easy task that he’s got ahead of him, but Thiago Silva has to win to keep in the UFC top brass’ good graces. After all, three failures in a row would have anyone nervous about their job security. Now, while the Bulgarian beast Stanislav Nedkov boasts a Jiu-Jitsu black belt of his own, it’s the perfect fight for the light heavyweight Silva to use his sweep- and submission-heavy ground game. Might the Brazilian soften the undefeated Nedkov up on the feet before finishing him off on the ground? Or will he wear the Bulgarian out on the ground to knock him out on the feet? Either way, we’re bracing for a barnburner, standing or on the ground.

2. Dong Hyun Kim vs. Paulo Thiago

Dong “Stun Gun” Kim and the policeman from Brasilia are in the same boat: they’re both coming off a loss and need a win to stay relevant in the welterweight division. Kim will have the crowd on his side, and he will be looking for all-out standup exchanges, using his characteristic long-range kicks and punches. Officer Paulo Thiago will need to curb the Korean’s enthusiasm, and Jiu-Jitsu may be the way.

Prediction: Paulo Thiago

3. Takanori Gomi vs. Mac Danzig

A beast from back in the days of Pride FC, Takanori Gomi will be looking to take his American foe down and work him over with ground and pound. Gomi will likely try to steer clear of the striking game, as Mac Danzig is proven in the Thai boxing department. Who falls first? Who wins?

Prediction: Mac Danzig

4. Zhang Tie Quan vs. Jon Tuck

Chinese lightweight Zhang Tie (15w, 3l) is a brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu and has 12 submission wins to brag of. The coolest part is that he likes keeping the fight standing at the start, throwing potent punches and counter-attacking with his takedown game. That’s the style undefeated UFC first-timer Jon “Super Saiyan” Tuck of Guam will need to decipher. Tuck is a well-rounded fighter himself, so the odds are the match-up will make for a great fight.

Prediction: Zhang Tie

5. Riki Fukuda vs. Tom DeBlass

An experienced New Jersey-based Ricardo Cachorrão black belt, Tom DeBlass has held heavyweight and light heavyweight titles from other promotions. Now a middleweight in the UFC, Tom is hoping to get back to his winning ways, since failing to take down and finish the lanky Cyrille Diabete losing via split decision. Now he’s set to face Riki Fukuda, a Japanese fighter who has been around the block himself, having fought in the Shooto, Pancrase, K-1 and Deep promotions. The Chinese crowd probably won’t be too keen on a Japanese fighter, so Tom’s task is to win them over, sidestep Fukuda’s fists and go for the finish.

Prediction: Tom DeBlass

Apesar da pedreira búlgara Stanislav Nedkov também ostentar a faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, é a luta perfeita para o Silva dos meio-pesados usar seu jogo de solo, rico em raspagens e finalizações. Será que o brasileiro vai amaciar em pé e despachar o invicto Nedkov no chão? Ou então cansar o búlgaro no chão para derrubar em pé? Seja como for, nossa torcida é para um lutaço, no chão ou em pé.

2 . Dong Hyun Kim vs Paulo Thiago

Dong “Stun Gun “ Kim está na mesma situação que o policial de Brasília: está vindo de derrota e quer a vitória para seguir vivo no Ultimate. Kim terá a torcida a seu lado, tem chutes e socos fortes de longa distância como característica em seus combates e vai buscar a trocação franca com o brasileiro. O caveira Paulo Thiago vai precisar domar bem a empolgação do coreano, e o Jiu-Jitsu pode ser a saída.

3 . Takanori Gomi vs Mac Danzig

Monstrinho nos tempos do Pride, Takanori Gomi volta ao UFC novamente com o intuito de botar o rival americano para baixo  e trabalhar o ground and pound. Em pé, pode complicar para Gomi, afinal Mac Danzig é um ótimo lutador de muay thai. Quem vai cair primeiro? Quem vence?

4 . Zhang Tie Quan vs Jon Tuck

O peso leve chinês Zhang Tie (15v, 3d) é faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu e conta com 12 finalizações no seu cartel. O mais maneiro é que o doido gosta de manter a luta em pé no início, de onde solta fortes socos e, no contra-ataque, encaixa seu jogo de quedas. É esse estilo que o invicto Jon “Super Saiyan” Tuck (6v), atleta da ilha americana de Guam, vai precisar decifrar. Estreante no UFC, Tuck também tem um jogo completo. Promessa de lutão.

5 . Riki Fukuda vs Tom DeBlass

Experiente faixa-preta de Ricardo Cachorrão em Nova Jersey, Tom DeBlass já foi dono de cinturões no peso pesado e no meio-pesado. Hoje no peso médio do UFC, Tom quer reencontrar o caminho das vitórias, após não conseguir botar para baixo e finalizar o esguio Cyrille Diabaté. Perdeu na decisão dividida, e agora encara o rodado Riki Fukuda, japonês que lutou no Shooto, Pancrase, K-1 e Deep.  A torcida chinesa não deve apoiar muito um japonês, então para Tom é ganhar a galera, desviar das patadas de Fukuda e finalizar.

Bruno Bastos, a Jiu-Jitsu professor from Brazil now living in Dallas, Texas, decided to stick his neck out in MMA recently. The Nova União black belt fought twice over the last 30 days. First, on September 29, he overcame Yosif Petrov with a choke 2:20 minutes into their fight in Bulgaria. Next, on the 20th of this month, he squared off with the undefeated Ricardo McCall in Texas, USA, where he came up short.

Bruno hadn’t fought in MMA since 2006, when he suffered a setback to the then-up-and-coming Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares. In an exclusive GRACIEMAG.com interview, Bastos shared the lessons he learned in the ring, spoke of his expectations for the Copa Pódio Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and heaped praise on a special competitor of his: Xande Ribeiro. Check out what he had to say:

GRACIEMAG: What was missing for you to beat McCall? Is he really all that tough?

BRUNO BASTOS: Right, well I did win the first round; I just couldn’t get much going by way of submissions. I had a guillotine in tight but was afraid to risk ending up on bottom, so I opted to just win the round. In the second round, I tried taking him down and ended up stuck up against the fencing trying a single-leg. And to be honest, I lacked experience: rather than get out and try something else, I stayed there the whole round trying to take him down and wasted a lot of energy. I went back tired for the last round, when he defended my takedown attempt and hit me until the ref stepped in.

What did you learn from this MMA fight?

I learned that I need to do a better job of controlling the adrenaline. It’s really different from Jiu-Jitsu, and when something doesn’t go to plan, you have to use that control to create alternatives. A black belt in Jiu-Jitsu certainly doesn’t equate to a black belt in MMA (laughs).

Did you learn much from the training you did for the fights?

A lot. The training was awesome. We did a seven-week training camp where I worked a lot on standup with the UFC veteran Paul Buentello. After that I did another two weeks with my black belt Stanislav Nedkov, working on everything but focusing mostly on wrestling. Over the last two weeks, I ironed out my Jiu-Jitsu with my brother Ricardo.

You hadn’t fought in MMA since 2006. What’s your assessment of your return?

In Bulgaria I won by submission in the first round, and after that I fought in Texas. Bunching the two fights together, I feel it was overall positive because I went through situations that make me a better trainer for my students, not to mention the fact I’ll be able to use what I learned in my next fights. I want to fight again next year. Of course it would be great to make it to the UFC or Bellator; but my objective is really to just be a better and more well-rounded martial artist so I can share the skills with others. I think I’m always going to compete. It was you guys at GRACIEMAG.com who started calling me “Highlander”, wasn’t it (laughs).

In January you’ll be traveling to Rio for the Copa Pódio Jiu-Jitsu event. What have you got planned for when you take on Xande and the new generation of heavyweights?

Well, I’m getting old… But it will certainly be an honor to be among the top guys currently competing. Next year I’ll have completed 23 years of Jiu-Jitsu. Rodolfo will be turning 23 years of age… And then there’s João Gabriel, who’s even younger still. To make it to this level after competing for so long, to be recognized as a good fighter, that in itself makes me really happy. If you stop to think about it, I was invited to the ADCC in 2005, 2007 and 2009 and 2011, and now I’m invited to Copa Pódio. I’ve been doing a good, proper job, and that’s why I’m being rewarded with a chance to compete against the greats like Xande Ribeiro, who in my opinion is the best competitor in history. No one has won as much as he has. So I see myself as being ready to make history come January 13. And that’s how I see myself fitting in on this card.

What do you have planned for the rest of the season?

I’m going to compete at the No-Gi Worlds on the 3rd and 4th and at the Long Beach Open on December 8 to try and rack up enough points on the IBJJF ranking to get myself into the Pro League. I don’t want to miss out on this IBJJF effort to make an event where athletes get paid, after all these years. I also want to use the series of competitions to get me in tip-top shape for Copa Pódio. The No-Gi Worlds is important since next year is an ADCC year, and I want to compete there one last time.

How did your brother Ricardo manage to be so good on his return, making it to the final with Xande at the Masters Worlds? Was there some secret involved?

He just fought the way he trains. He was always considered a major promise at Nova União, but for reasons life put in our way, only now did he show his potential. And I can tell you that this isn’t the half of it. He won silver this time, but next year he’s going to fight for the world title at adult. He’s only 30 years old and still has at least three more years at the highest level if he keeps taking care of himself like he is now. I’m really proud of him. Everyone knows he had a good appearance; but he isn’t 100% prepared yet. Wait and you’ll see; this isn’t just a brother making promises.

Professor de Jiu-Jitsu radicado em Dallas, Bruno Bastos resolveu dar uma chance ao MMA. O faixa-preta da Nova União fez, nos últimos 30 dias, duas lutas na modalidade. Primeiro, no dia 29 de setembro, venceu Yosif Petrov na Bulgária, com um estrangulamento aos 2min20s de luta. No último dia 20, mediu forças com o invicto Ricardo McCall, no Texas, nos EUA, e tombou.

Bruno não lutava MMA desde 2006, quando sofreu um revés para a então promessa Rousimar Palhares, o Toquinho. O carioca, em entrevista exclusiva ao GRACIEMAG.com, listou as lições que aprendeu no ringue, falou da expectativa para a Copa Pódio de Jiu-Jitsu e exaltou um concorrente em especial: Xande Ribeiro. GRACIEMAG: O que faltou para vencer o McCall? O cara é pedreira mesmo?

BRUNO BASTOS: É. Eu até ganhei bem o primeiro round, mas não consegui trabalhar muitas finalizações. Tive uma guilhotina justa, mas fiquei com medo de cair por baixo e não arrisquei, optei por ganhar o round. No segundo assalto, tentei derrubar e fiquei travado na grade, tentando o single-leg, e para ser sincero faltou experiência: em vez de sair e tentar outra coisa, fiquei ali o round inteiro tentando derrubar, e gastei muita energia. Já voltei cansado pro round final, quando ele então defendeu minha tentativa de queda e bateu até o juiz mandar parar.

O que você aprendeu nesta luta de MMA?

Aprendi que devo controlar melhor a adrenalina. É bem diferente do Jiu-Jitsu, e quando algo não sai como o planejado, é preciso usar esse controle para criar alternativas. Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu certamente não é faixa-preta de MMA (risos).

Muito, os treinos foram ótimos. Foram sete semanas de camp, onde pude treinar trocação com o veterano do UFC Paul Buentello, depois mais duas semanas com meu faixa-preta Stanislav Nedkov, onde trabalhei de tudo mas com ênfase no wrestling. Nas últimas duas semanas, passei ajustando meu Jiu-Jitsu com meu irmão Ricardo.

Você não lutava MMA desde 2006. Como avalia esse retorno?

Na Bulgária, ganhei por finalização no primeiro round, e depois lutei no Texas. Juntando as duas lutas, acho que o saldo é positivo, porque passei por situações que me tornaram um melhor treinador para meus alunos, além de poder usar o que aprendi nas próximas lutas. Quero lutar novamente ano que vem. Claro que seria ótimo chegar ao UFC, Bellator, mas o objetivo mesmo é ser um artista marcial melhor e mais completo, para poder passar isso adiante. Acho que vou competir para sempre. Foram vocês do GRACIEMAG.com que começaram a me chamar de Highlander, né (risos).

Em janeiro, você vem ao Rio para a Copa Pódio de Jiu-Jitsu. O que pretende ao enfrentar Xande e a nova geração de pesos pesados?

Olha, eu estou ficando velho… Mas certamente é uma honra estar entre os melhores competindo. Ano que vem completo 23 anos de Jiu-Jitsu. O Rodolfo vai completar 23 de idade… E tem o João Gabriel, que é ainda mais novo. Conseguir estar nesse nível depois de tanto tempo, ser reconhecido como um bom lutador, isso já me deixa muito feliz. Se você parar para pensar, fui convidado para os ADCCs de 2005, 2007, 2009 e 2011, fui convidado para a Copa Pódio. Tenho feito um trabalho bom, correto e por isso estou sendo recompensado em lutar ao lado desses grandes como Xande Ribeiro, o melhor competidor da história na minha opinião. Ninguém ganhou tanta coisa quanto ele! Então me vejo pronto para fazer História no dia 13 de janeiro. É assim que me vejo nesse card.

O que você está programando para o resto da temporada?

Vou lutar o Mundial Sem Kimono, dias 3 e 4, e o Long Beach Open, dia 8 de dezembro, para tentar pontuar no ranking da IBJJF e entrar no Pro League. Eu não quero ficar fora dessa iniciativa da IBJJF de criar um evento que remunere os atletas, depois de tantos anos de reivindicações da galera. Também quero pegar essa sequência e chegar mil por cento na Copa Pódio. O Mundial Sem Kimono é importante, pois ano que vem é ano de ADCC, e quero lutar uma última vez.

Como seu irmão Ricardo fez para voltar tão bem, chegando à final do absoluto Master contra o Xande? Tem algum segredo?

Ele simplesmente lutou como treina. Ele sempre foi considerado a grande promessa da Nova União, mas por motivos que a vida coloca em nossa frente, somente agora ele está mostrando seu potencial. E posso dizer que isso tudo foi somente a metade. Ele foi prata desta vez, mas ano que vem vai brigar pelo título no Mundial adulto. Ele está apenas com 30 anos e ainda tem pelos menos mais três em alto nível se continuar se cuidando como está agora. Estou muito orgulhoso dele. O pessoal sabe que ele se apresentou bem, mas ainda não está 100% preparado. Podem aguardar, não é promessa de irmão não.

And “Monster” from the Brazilian state of Ceará plans to be on par with the man he is substituting, to remain in the UFC ranks. The talented black belt (this year he captured titles at the IBJJF Rio Open, as well as a berth at the Abu Dhabi WPJJ) traveled from Fortaleza to Rio de Janeiro this Tuesday to intensify his training.

At Nova União headquarters, in the Flamengo neighborhood in Rio, Caio will be brushing up on his Thai boxing and tactics alongside José Aldo, Coach André Pederneiras and the rest of the rugged crew on the team. GRACIEMAG.com caught up with Magalhães at his last training session in Fortaleza, where Caio showed signs of being ready both standing and on the ground, even with Maldonado having some of the heaviest hands in the UFC. Since confirming the Erick Silva-Siyar Bahadurza tilt for the UFC 142 main card yesterday, the UFC added another Brazilian to the lineup of the Rio de Janeiro event to be held in the HSBC Arena on January 14: light heavyweight Fabio Maldonado (18-4-0) of Nogueira team will take on undefeated Bulgarian Stanislav Nedkov (12-0-0).

Maldonado, who is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Kyle Kingsbury, will be looking for redemption in the octagon against the man who defeated Luiz “Banha” Cané at the last event held in Brazil, last August.

José Aldo (featherweight champion), Vitor Belfort (middleweight), Thiago Tavares and Edson Barboza (lightweight) are the others confirmed to defend the Brazilian flag on the promotion’s Rio de Janeiro return. It will be the first event held in Brazil to be broadcast live on Rede Globo, the most popular network television station in the country. Tickets are expected to go on sale in December.

“I’m really glad about it; I hope to have a good fight, like the other ones I’ve had in Rio [before joining the UFC]. This interval was perfect for me. I’m going to start with groundwork training and then do more power-based training later,” said Maldonado, promising to fix the flaws that led to his only defeat in the organization, at the TUF Finale last June. “I made some mistakes in training for my fight with [Kyle] Kingsbury, but that won’t happen again. I know when the fighter’s style matches up well with mine, and the Bulgarian is going to take a whooping,” joked Junior Cigano’s training partner.

Maldonado will get a chance to avenge the knockout suffered by his countryman Luiz Banha at the hands of Nedkov, who was making his promotional debut. To the Brazilian boxing specialist, the Bulgarian’s game fits right in with his.

“I like imagining what my opponent will have to do to beat me. In this case, he’ll need to take me to the ground. He’s a good wrestler, he’s got what it takes to do it, so I’ll work on takedown defense and I won’t take him down. I’m going to try and keep it standing, like I always do, since that’s where I feel I’m strongest,” he said in finishing.
