Bellator’s first pay-per-view will happen, but not on Nov.2 like they planned.

Bjorn Rebney, Bellator CEO, announced on a Friday conference call that Tito Ortiz’s injury and scrapping of the planned main event with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will result in the company moving the card to Spike TV.

The card will air entirely for free with the prelims on SpikeTV.com and the main card on the cable television channel.

“While we’re disappointed that Tito’s injured … we’re thrilled that we’re going to be able to present the rest of that card to everybody on free TV, on Spike,” Rebney said.

The co-main event between lightweight champion Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez will move into the main event spot.

Ortiz suffered a fractured neck and was informed by his doctor that competing in the fight will have “dire consequences,” Rebney said. Ortiz wanted to follow through with the bout, but the fighter ultimately listened to his physician and bowed out of the fight.

Jackson will hopefully fight within the next few weeks, Rebney said, and the company chairman thinks they’ll be able to book a fight for him before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Anyone who already ordered the PPV will get a full refund, according to Spike TV executive Kevin Kay.

O último combate de Jackson foi uma derrota no UFC on Fox 6 contra Glover Teixeira. A luta foi a terceira derrota seguida do ex-campeão, e ele não ganha mais de duas seguidas há quase seis anos.

“Quando você olha para o meu contrato com o UFC e o alcance do meu acordo com O Bellator e a TNA, isto é como um
conto de fadas”, disse Rampage ao TMZ, programa americano de fofocas.

O acréscimo de Jackson à jaula do Bellator era improvável após o fim do contrato do lutador com o Ultimate. Rebney, numa entrevista dada ao Yahoo! Sports em janeiro, havia dito que o polêmico atleta não se encaixava no formato do Bellator, acrescentando ainda que a carreira de Jackson estava nas últimas:

“Seria uma daquelas situações de tentar botar a peça quadrada no buraco redondo”, disse
Rebney sobre a ideia de contratar Jackson. “Não acho nem que ele negaria que está nos últimos estágios de sua carreira. Ele não está nem na infância, nem no meio dela.”

Rebney acrescentou que teria de discutir com seus sócios se a adição de Jackson ao elenco da organização seria algo digno de consideração. Em vista do anúncio de ontem, a discussão acabou e a decisão está feita. Kevin Kay, presidente da Spike TV, disse que Jackson vai aumentar a audiência de seu canal, levando-se em conta a popularidade do astro:

“Estamos animados em criar esta oportunidade para um dos maiores atletas e personalidades do MMA”, disse Kay em anúncio. “Rampage atrai bilheteria, e vai deixar o Bellator e a TNA maisestrelados.”

O Bellator e Spike TV divulgaram nesta semana o nome dos 32 participantes do primeiro reality show promovido pela organização, o Fight Master. Entre os meio-médios selecionados, alguns velhos conhecidos do público e que já atuaram na franquia. O capoeirista Marcus “Lelo” Aurélio e o invicto Cristiano Souza são os únicos brasileiros na competição.

O Fight Master terá quatro treinadores: três ex-campeões de MMA, Joe Warren, Frank Shamrock e Randy Couture, e um dos profissionais mais respeitados de artes marciais, Greg Jackson.

Saindo dos moldes do programa da organização concorrente, os meio-médios escolherão seus técnicos e eles também serão responsáveis por escolher com quem querem lutar. Os três primeiros episódios terão combates eliminatórios. A final será ao vivo, em evento a ser confirmado para este ano, com transmissão da Spike TV.

O Bellator e o Spike TV, canal de TV americano, realizou ontem uma coletiva para detalhar os planos de um reality show com o nome “Fight Masters: Bellator MMA”. O programa deve ser exibido no fim do primeiro semestre de 2013. As informações são do repórter Erik Fontanez.

O reality terá 32 lutadores divididos em quatro times. O líder de um dos times será Randy Couture, ex-campeão de duas categorias do UFC, integrante do Hall da Fama da organização e pioneiro no reality show de lutas do UFC, quando foi técnico ao lado de Chuck Liddell da primeira edição do “The Ultimate Fighter”. Frank Shamrock, ex-campeão do UFC e do Strikeforce, Greg Jackson, famoso treinador de MMA que já trabalhou com Jon Jones, e o peso-galo do Bellator, Joe Warren, fecham a lista de técnicos do reality.

“Estou animado”, disse o CEO do Bellator, Bjorn Rebney, ao GRACIEMAG.com durante a coletiva. “Tem tanta coisa acontecendo ao mesmo tempo, é quase como beber água de uma mangueira de incêndio. É incrível”.

Os lutadores do programa vão entrar na disputa por uma vaga no GP dos meio-médios do evento, que ocorre no segundo semestre de 2013. Eles vão morar juntos e treinar em um complexo localizado em Nova Orleans. No formato do programa, os atletas vão poder escolher por qual técnico serão treinados e quem gostariam de enfrentar na luta seguinte.

A vice-presidente de séries originais do Spike TV, Sharon Levy, disse que o livre-arbítrio do programa pode definir os vencedores do programa.

“Como os lutadores decidem seu próprio destino, eles vão precisar usar bem sua estratégia dentro e fora das grades para avançar para a próxima semana”, disse.

O Spike TV foi a emissora que transmitiu as primeiras edições do “TUF”, no começo de 2005. A empresa deixou de veicular o show em sua programação após o Ultimate fechar contrato com a Fox.

A data de estreia do programa, assim como a programação das gravações, não foi divulgada pelos executivos.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Bellator and Spike TV plan to produce and broadcast an MMA-related reality show entitled “Fight Master: Bellator MMA” in summer 2013, the companies announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

The show will be comprised of 32 fighters divided into four teams coached by former two-division UFC champion Randy Couture, former Strikeforce and UFC champion Frank Shamrock, famed MMA coach Greg Jackson, and Bellator bantamweight Joe Warren.

“I’m excited,” Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney told GRACIEMAG.com following the press conference. “There’s so much happening right now. It’s almost like getting a drink of water out of a fire hose. It’s awesome.”

The fighters will compete for a spot in the welterweight tournament, which will take place in the fall of 2013, and will live and train together in a compound located in New Orleans. Additionally, fighters will be able to choose which coach they want to train under and who they want to fight next.

Sharon Levy, Spike’s executive vice president of original series, described the show’s approach by saying the stakes are high and any wrong decision by a fighter can make the difference.

“As the fighters control their own destiny, they will need to utilize strategy in and out of the cage if they want to succeed and advance each week,” she said.

Levy and Rebney did not divulge what day and time slot the show is scheduled for, but Levy said that an announcement will be made soon.

Spike has been known for showcasing reality-based MMA programming in the past, as they were the home to the UFC’s groundbreaking series “The Ultimate Fighter” beginning in 2005. The company broadcasted the UFC’s show until the end of 2011 when the MMA promotion signed an exclusive deal with the Fox network.

The Bellator series will delve into its fighters backgrounds and showcase the journeys that brought them to the reality tournament. Fighters were interviewed and recruited from “all over,” according to Rebney, but their identities were not revealed.

Plans for when they plan to start shooting for the series were not announced.

Ben Askren, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal e Douglas Lima brilharam mais forte no card do Bellator 86, realizado em Thaclervile, no estado de Oklahoma, nessa quinta-feira, 24 de janeiro. As informações são do nosso repórter Erik Fontanez.

Na luta principal da noite, Ben Askren defendia o cinturão dos meio-médios contra Karl Amoussou. Askren foi superior durante os cinco minutos do primeiro round, chegando a abrir um corte no rosto de Karl. No segundo assalto, Amoussou tentou aplicar uma chave de pé em Ben, que escapou e já se colocou em posição de vantagem, dominando mais esta etapa. No terceiro, Askren montou e aplicou duros golpes em Amoussou, impedindo que o mesmo voltasse para o quarto round. Vitória por nocaute técnica de Askren, que manteve uma invencibilidade de 11 lutas.

Pelo coevento principal, o ex-Strikeforce “King Mo” Lawal fazia sua estreia no Bellator contra o impronunciável Przemyslaw Mysiala, da Polônia. Sem muito mistério, King Mo partiu para cima de Mysiala, que chegou a tentar responder com uma boa combinação, mas foi surpreendido com dois punhos rápidos de Lawal, que o levaram ao nocaute aos 3min52s de luta.

Destaque também para a luta entre o brasileiro Douglas Lima contra Michail Tsarev. Além de se manter em pé o tempo todo, defendendo as investidas de queda de Michail, Douglas soltou as caneladas para cima do adversário. Tsarev não resistiu ao castigo, e obrigou o árbitro a interromper a luta a 1min44s do segundo round.

Mais uma luta valendo cinturão rola hoje, dia 17 de janeiro, e tem cão de guarda brasileiro na disputa. Patrício Pitbull, atleta do Bellator, sobe no cercado contra Pat Curran, para brigar pelo título dos penas. Campeão do peso-galo da organização, Dudu Dantas (Nova União) aposta as fichas no amigo Pitbull, e explica por quê.

“O Patrício é um atleta muito duro, assim como o irmão dele, Patricky, que também é outro amigo que tenho. Estarei na torcida por ele nesta luta. O Curran é um excelente lutador, mas confio na pegada do Patrício, no ritmo forte de luta que ele impõe e em suas mãos pesadas. Não sei como a luta vai terminar, mas acho que teremos mais um campeão brasileiro no Bellator”, torce Dudu, que defende o seu cinturão contra Marco “Loro” Galvão, no dia 14 de fevereiro, na Carolina do Norte, no Belllator 89.

Já Patricky, irmão de Patrício, revelou ter recusado um convite para transmitir a luta, para ter liberdade com suas emoções.

“Até me convidaram para comentar a luta, mas não aceitei. Quero ficar em casa para poder xingar e acompanhar o combate. Meu irmão está bem tranquilo, quando ele está com a cabeça boa não tem quem o segure”, revelou Patricky, que luta no dia 31 de janeiro, no Bellator 87.

O card do Bellator 85, que terá também a disputa de cinturão dos leves entre Rick Hawn e Michael Chandler, ainda traz dois faixas-pretas de Jiu-Jitsu experientes: Renato Babalu, que enfrenta Mikhail Zayats pelas quartas de final da divisão dos meio-pesados; e Cleber “Tomadinha” Luciano, que enfrenta Mario Navarro.

Principal concorrente do UFC, o Bellator FIghting Championship fará sua estreia no canal americano Spike TV, dia 17 de janeiro de 2013, informa nosso Erik Fontanez. A transmissão traz logo duas disputas de cinturão. O anúncio foi feito pela organização nesta terça-feira.

Atual campeão dos pesos leves, Mike Chandler vai defender seu título contra o vencedor da sexta temporada do GP dos leves, Rick Hawn. Já pelos penas, Pat Curran vai defender o cinturão contra o brasileiro Patricio Pitibull, no show de estreia no Spike TV. O evento será realizado na Universidade da Califórnia, em Irvine.

A organização também anunciou que o segundo show a ser exibido já tem data: será em 24 de janeiro, com a defesa do cinturão dos meio-médios, entre Ben Askren e Karl Amoussou. Ex-campeão dos meio-pesados, Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal também vai estar neste segundo evento, mas seu oponente ainda não foi definido.

Além disso, cinco GPs serão organizados durante a próxima temporada – nas divisões dos penas, leves, meio-médio, médios e meio-pesados. Lutadores como Lawal, o brasileiro Renato Babalu e Seth Petruzelli vão estar na categoria dos meio-pesados, enquanto Ben Saunders e o brasileiro Douglas Lima estão confirmados na divisão dos meio-médios.

A promessa é de um show do Bellator toda quinta-feira, nas 12 primeiras semanas de transmissão pelo Spike TV. O Bellator, que já era transmitido via cabo pelo canal MTV2, ainda não tem previsão para vender seus programas via pay-per-view, tal qual o UFC. Os organizadores disseram também que há planos para um reality show.

Bellator Fighting Championships will make their 2013 debut on Spike TV on Thursday, Jan. 17, and the broadcast will feature two title fights, the company announced on Tuesday.

Lightweight champion Mike Chandler will defend his title against Season 6 tournament winner Rick Hawn, and Pat Curran will defend his featherweight belt against Patricio “Pitbull” Freire on the Spike TV debut. The event will take place at The University of California, Irvine’s Bren Center in Irvine, Calif.

The company also announced that their second broadcast will be Jan. 24, which will feature welterweight champion Ben Askren defending his title against Karl Amoussou. Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal will also be on the second event, but an opponent is yet to be determined. Lawal will have specials dedicated to him airing between the first and second Bellator broadcasts on the network.

Bellator will air events every Thursday for 12 straight weeks, officials said, and broadcasts will start at 10 p.m. ET. Viewers on the West Coast with a dish can watch the fights live at 7 p.m. PT, but cable subscribers will have to wait for a tape delay at 10 p.m. PT.

Five tournaments will take place during the upcoming season, including those in the 145-, 155-, 170-, 185- and 205-pound weight classes. Fighters such as Lawal, UFC veteran Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Seth Petruzelli will be in the 205-pound tournament, while Ben Saunders and Douglas Lima will be in the 170-pound bracket. Others will be added in the near future.

Bellator’s biggest competitor, the UFC, has long presented itself as a Pay-Per-View company. Bellator, however, has made their reputation through cable networks, most recently with MTV2 and next year with Spike — a network that used to host UFC Fight Night cards. When asked, company CEO Bjorn Rebney said there are no immediate plans for a Bellator Pay-Per-View.

Officials said the company is currently casting for its first fight-based reality show, but plans for its debut are still being worked out.

Tonight, I decided to sit down and watch “Ultimate Gracie” on Spike TV.

This documentary tells a story that if you train martial arts and especially Jiu-Jitsu, you should have heard, read or seen many times over. About 25 minutes into the documentary, it gets to Royce Gracie’s first fight at UFC I vs. the champion boxer, Art Jimmerson.

As I was watching the story unfold, I saw and then heard something that in my opinion explains a lot. I saw Art Jimmerson in the exact same position that James Toney found himself in against Randy Couture a few weeks back in the same Octagon – the Mount. In both situations, the boxer had absolutely no idea what to do.

In the James Toney fight, you could see the legs flat to the mat, which is an obvious sign that the person has no experience escaping the mount. So the question arises, if the world was introduced to Jiu-Jitsu back in 1993 when Royce mounted a boxer and won a fight without a single punch being thrown by the boxer, why are there still people, more specifically fighters, that do not train Jiu-Jitsu?

Then Art answered the question for me. “It was a sort of phobia.” He tapped out because there was a 170-pound kid on top of him that he could not get off. It was just scary. Panic sets in and there is nothing left to do.

Luckily, his life did not depend on it and he had the ability to tap out! Despite MMA and Jiu-Jitsu becoming vastly popular around the world, there are still millions of people who have no idea how to handle themselves in a fight, and even more so on the ground. I firmly believe that one of the primary reasons is this phobia that was mentioned tonight on Spike TV.

I have witnessed in my time teaching Jiu-Jitsu, grown men submit because of this panic that sets in when one realizes that they cannot escape, even when no one is punching them! I will always remember my teacher, Pedro Brandao Lacerda, telling me that he was going to “think heavy,” and all of a sudden his side control literally felt like one hundred kilos!

I have tried my hardest to pass this on to our students at PMA, because I think this sort of claustrophobia is a very important obstacle to overcome in your Jiu-Jitsu training. My students luckily have recognized the benefits of continuing to train and overcoming this panic by learning to relax and escape.

Hopefully with time, more people will take the plunge and start training martial arts. If someone can overcome the phobia and fear of stepping out onto the mat, they will experience one of the most rewarding journeys of a lifetime. Have you started your journey yet?
