At his seat and about to take off on his flight from the United States to Brazil, Coach Carlos “Escorrega” Lemos’s last words to the press while still on American soil were with GRACIEMAG.com, with whom he discussed the man sitting next to him, Spencer Fisher’s impending battle with Brazil’s Thiago Tavares at UFC Rio.

“He’s and great shape and will put in a great performance, you can count on it,” said the 2002 Jiu-Jitsu world champion who is also our GMA at Gracie Barra Countryside.

The flight attendant chimed in. It was time to turn off the phone, the plane was about to take off. Before that, though, “Escorrega” addressed the training Fisher has been doing to try and win in his opponent’s hometown.

Is Spencer coming with you to Brazil?

Yes, we’re going to finish up training at Gracie Barra.

What are his main weapons going into this fight?

He’s a great striker, the best I’ve ever seen in the lighter weight groups, and his defensive wrestling is really good, too. It’s really hard to take him down. His only weakness is on the ground, but we’ve been working on it for some time now.

How did your coaching him come about?

He showed up through a friend. I had three weeks to coach him for his last fight (loss to Ross Pearson at UFC 127), against a guy from the same school, a student of Bráulio Estima. We did some good work. I wasn’t in his corner, but he had a good fight and did a good job on the ground. For real, he landed hard shots the whole time but they didn’t give him the win. Fisher held an exchange with my academy, he’s got students who are wicked wrestlers. The training sessions were burly. Matt Wiman, who knocked out Thiago Tavares, is in the photos from the session [below], for example.

Dentro da aeronave, as últimas palavras antes da viagem dos Estados Unidos ao Brasil foram com o GRACIEMAG.com. O treinador Carlos Lemos, também conhecido como Escorrega, vem ao lado de Spencer Fisher, adversário do Brasileiro Thiago Tavares no UFC Rio.

“O cara tá bem e vai fazer bonito, podem esperar”, avisa o campeão Mundial de 2002, que é nosso GMA na Gracie Barra Countryside.

A comissária de bordo chamou a atenção. Já era a hora de desligar o telefone, o avião iria decolar. Antes disso, porém, Escorrega bateu um papo sobre os treinos de Fisher para tentar vencer na casa do adversário.

Já vem para o Brasil com o Spencer Fisher?

Sim, vamos finalizar o treinamento na Gracie Barra.

Quais as principais armas dele para o desafio?

Ele é um grande striker, o melhor que já vi entre os pesos mais leves, e tem o wrestling defensivo muito bom, é muito difícil derrubá-lo. A deficiência dele era o chão, mas estamos trabalhando isso há algum tempo.

Como começou a treinar ele?

Ele apareceu através de um amigo. Tive três semanas para treinar ele para a última luta (derrota para Ross Pearson no UFC 127), contra um cara que vem da mesma escola, aluno do Bráulio Estima. Conseguimos fazer um bom trabalho, não estive no corner dele, mas ele fez uma boa luta e trabalhou bem no chão. Na real, ele enfiou a mão, mas não deram a vitoria para ele. Fisher passou a fazer um intercâmbio na minha academia, ele tem alunos top no wrestling. O treino é duro. Nas fotos do nosso treino (logo abaixo), por exemplo, está o Matt Wiman, que já nocauteou o Thiago Tavares.

Thiago Tavares managed to get what so many of his compatriots crave: a berth at UFC Rio. Come August 27 the black belt will have his chance to fight before his countrymen, facing Spencer Fisher in the HSBC Arena.

“It’s what everyone’s been wanting and my fight was one of the first ones confirmed. I’ve been dreaming of this; it was my goal. But to be honest I didn’t expect it to happen. I’m overjoyed,” he told GRACIEMAG.com.

Coming off a loss, the fighter knows he’ll need to put in a good showing for the promotion. The fact he’s fighting in Brazil may mean greater pressure, but Thiago says he’s used to it.

“There’s always pressure when you fight in the UFC. Sometimes the pressure is to get your contract renewed, to move up in the ranks or when your opponent is really dangerous… All that comes with being a fighter, and we have to deal with it whether we want to or not. It’s another fight I’m going to face as best I can. It’s a bit different, since it will be in Brazil, but I’m going to do what needs to be done. I feel that if it affects me at all it will be positively, because I’ll be among my fans and my friends. What we feel a lot of the time we’re away from home our opponents will get to feel this time.”

With that in mind, the Florianópolis native turns his attention to his adversary.

“He’s really dangerous, has knockout power, can end a fight at any moment, and he has a solid chin. I don’t think he’s ever been knocked out, and he handles himself well in tight situations. He’s been in fights where he gets battered bad and still comes out on top, and he should show up in peak form. The fight will be a show-stopper. I feel it will be one of the fights of the night.”

However aware he is of Fisher’s striking savvy, Tavares isn’t likely to resort to trying to keep the fight on the ground.

“I’m going to do MMA. I’m going to stand and trade and do to him everything that needs doing. I’ve got my boxing up to speed. Everyone gets hit, sometimes they might fall. I’m going to stand and bang and if he goes to the ground I’m ready for that too. In MMA we have to be ready for wherever the fight ends up,” he said in closing.

Thiago Tavares conseguiu o que muitos de seus compatriotas queriam: foi escalado para o UFC Rio. No dia 27 de agosto, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu encara Spencer Fisher na HSBC Arena.

“Todos estavam querendo isso e a minha luta foi uma das primeiras a ser confirmada. Sonhava com isso, era o meu objetivo, mas confesso que não esperava. Estou muito feliz!”, declara ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Vindo de derrota, o lutador sabe que precisa de um bom resultado na organização. O fato de lutar no Brasil poderia aumentar ainda mais a pressão, no entanto, Thiaguinho está acostumado com isso.

“Lutar no UFC é sempre muita pressão. Às vezes essa pressão é para renovar o contrato, para subir no ranking, ou quando o adversário é perigoso… Isso faz parte da vida do lutador, e temos que lidar com isso querendo ou não. É mais uma luta que vou encarar da melhor maneira. É um pouco diferente, pois vai ser no Brasil, mas vou fazer o que tem que ser feito. Acho que, se afetar em algo, vai ser a favor, porque estarei perto da minha torcida e de muitos amigos. O que sentimos na maioria das vezes, quando lutamos longe de casa, nossos adversários vão sentir dessa vez.”

Sendo assim, a fera de Florianópolis está ligada no adversário.

“Ele é muito perigoso, tem poder de nocaute, pode acabar com a luta a qualquer momento, e tem queixo. Acho que ele nunca foi nocauteado e aguenta bem o aperto. Tem lutas que ele deu a volta por cima depois de muito castigo e deve vir no auge da forma. Vai ser luta para parar o ginásio, acredito que uma das melhores da noite.”

Apesar de saber da boa trocação de Fisher, Tavares não deve fazer uma luta somente na tentativa de explorar o chão.

“Vou fazer MMA. Troco em pé e faço com ele tudo o que tem que ser feito. Estou com o boxe afiado. Todo mundo toma uma mão, às vezes acontece de cair. Vou trocar em pé e, se ele jogar no chão, também vou estar preparado. No MMA temos que estar prontos para aonde a luta cair”, encerra.

A fourth matchup has been announced for the card to feature at the August 27 UFC Rio show. According to the UFC website, Brazil’s Luiz “Banha” Cane is set to face Bulgaria’s Stanislav Nedkov.

Nedkov, who will be making his UFC debut, is undefeated in MMA with 11 fights on his ledger. The fighter has five knockouts and holds a win over Kevin Randleman. Now Banha has seven fights in the UFC, four of them wins (one by disqualification).

As previously reported by GRACIEMAG.com, the other matches confirmed feature Anderson Silva, Yoshin Okami, Maurício Shogun, Forrest Griffin, Thiago Tavares e Spencer Fisher.

O quarto combate foi anunciado para o UFC Rio, evento que acontece no dia 27 de agosto. Segundo o site oficial do UFC, o brasileiro Luiz “Banha” Cane encara o búlgaro Stanislav Nedkov.

Nedkov, que estréia no Ultimate, está invicto no MMA com 11 lutas no cartel. A fera tem cinco triunfos por nocaute e já venceu lutadores Kevin Randleman. Já Banha possui sete lutas no UFC, com quatro vitórias. Vale lembrar que uma das derrotas foi por desclassificação.

Como o GRACIEMAG.com já vinha anunciando, as outras lutas confirmadas contam com feras como Anderson Silva, Yoshin Okami, Maurício Shogun, Forrest Griffin, Thiago Tavares e Spencer Fisher.

The card for UFC Rio is starting to take shape and three matchups have already been announced by the promotion, each involving a local fighter. The event is set for August 27, at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

Previously reported by GRACIEMAG.com, the rematches between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami and Forrest Griffin and Maurício Shogun have been made official.

The third bout confirmed pits lightweight Thiago Tavares against Spencer Fisher. Neither athlete has been having great results, so a win is of the utmost importance.

Ticekts go on sale in May. UFC president Dana White promises to announce the complete card by June 16, so stay tuned to GRACIEMAG.com to find out about the matchups in the works as they happen.

O card do UFC Rio começa a ganhar corpo e três combates já foram anunciados pela organização, todos envolvendo lutadores locais. O evento acontece no dia 27 de agosto, na HSBC Arena, na Barra da Tijuca.

Lutas que o GRACIEMAG.com já vinha comentando, foram oficializadas esta semana as revanches entre Anderson Silva e Yushin Okami, luta principal da noite e disputa do cinturão de médios, e a entre Forrest Griffin e Maurício Shogun.

O terceiro combate confirmado traz o peso leve Thiago Tavares contra Spencer Fisher. Os atletas não vêm numa série de grandes resultados, então a vitória se torna algo importantíssimo para ambos.

Os ingressos começam a ser vendidos a partir de maio. Presidente do UFC, Dana White promete anunciar o card completo até o dia 16 de junho, mas, antes disso, confira as novidades pelo GRACIEMAG.com.
