“I’m in and will leave for Rio the day after tomorrow to train with Ricardo Vieira and to accompany my white to purple belt students, who fight this weekend,” says the CheckMat representative.

On the 15^th and 16^th of May it will be the black belts’ turn to hit the mats. Cavaca will compete on both days, since the absolute is an obsession of his.

“I’m going in at weight and in the absolute. This year will be rough; I’ve just missed before, but I can’t give up. I have to win a CBJJ or IBJJF absolute. This year I was runner-up in Europe and third at the Pan. I have to make it!”

As added incentive, last weekend Cavaca won his supermatch at the SP Cup. The result lifted his spirits.

I fought well at that event in São Paulo and it was great. They handed out 30 travel packages for the Worlds. As I was absolute champion last year, I had a supermatch this year and hung on to my belt. I faced Tiago Alves, a student of Barbosa’s, and right off the bat I managed to sink a triangle and spin to his arm to finish. Tiago is a really tough guy and that was my moment.”

But his greater goal is the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship to take place in California from the 3^rd to the 6^th of June.

“I’ll do the Brazilian Nationals, return to Santos and, on the 20^th, I’ll head for the United States, where we’ll have a training camp for the Worlds. Last year the event showed how it just gets bigger and bigger. There’s nowhere to run, all the divisions are tough. There are several favorites in each weight class, each with a shot at becoming champion. It’ll be rough,” he forecasts.

“Last year I lost the ultra heavyweight decider to (Gabriel) Vella by two advantages. This time I’m going in more mature and better prepared. I feel I’ve evolved a lot, corrected some errors and this is my greater objective. This year I can’t strike out,” he says in finishing.

With the city of São Paulo empty, hundreds of Gentle Art aficionados headed for the Unitalo gymnasium, in the Santo Amaro borough, for an afternoon of a lot of technique and sweat.

In the six match areas, the troopers at the SP Cup were fighting with a more-than-just compensation for so much effort. The promoters distributed 30 complete travel packages for the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, to take place June, in Long Beach, California.

The gold medal in 30 divisions meant a round-trip ticket, board with breakfast and car rental.

Such ease drew a number of top-tier fighters: “It’s always good when it doesn’t have to come out of your own pocket,” joked “capitalist” Guilherme Mendes.

This Saturday, the main attraction was the black belt weight groups.

At featherweight, nothing new went on and Bruno Malfacine had two submission wins. In the final, he squeezes on the neck of Ivaniel Cavalcanti.

At light featherweight, Guilherme Mendes put on a show and choked Pablo Silva in the final to secure his travel package.

At featherweight, Theodoro Canal scored 2 to 0 in advantage points over Eduardo Ramos in the decider.

At lightweight, Claudio Claoquinha submitted everyone and caught Paulo Ledesma by the foot in the final.

At middleweight, veteran Pé de Chumbo came up spades. Delson Heleno relied on his takedown skills to make it 6 to 4 over Tiago Alves.

At medium heavyweight, Orlando Zanetti annulled Eduardo Telles’s turtle guard and scored 8 to 2 for his trip to the USA.

At heavyweight, Bernardo Faria and Leonardo Nogueira closed out the division.

At super heavyweight, Daniel Azevedo gave Luis Bonilha a 10 to 0 drubbing.

At ultra heavyweight, Rodrigo Cavaca guaranteed his place at the Worlds by beating Luiz Felipe Theodoro by judges’ decision.

Beyond all that, it was great to see Fernando Tererê hanging around the match areas, smiling and taking photos with athletes too young to have remembered his heyday.  Welcome back, Tererê.

This Sunday there’s more. The beasts return to the matted area for the absolute black belt division.

Com a cidade de São Paulo vazia, centenas de aficcionados pela arte suave se dirigiram ao ginásio da Unitalo, no bairro de Santo Amaro, para uma tarde de muita técnica e suor.

Nas seis áreas de luta, os batalhadores da SP Cup lutavam de olho numa recompensa mais do que justa para tanto esforço. Os organizadores distribuiriam 30 pacotes completos para o Campeonato Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, que acontece em junho, em Long Beach, Califórnia.

A medalha de ouro de 30 categorias significavam passagem de ida e volta, hospedagem com café da manhã e aluguel de carro.

Tamanha moleza atraiu grandes feras: “Sempre é bom quando não precisa sair nada do bolso”, brincou o “capitalista” Guilherme Mendes.

Nesse sábado, a atração principal foram os pesos da faixa-preta.

No galo, nenhuma novidade e duas finalizações de Bruno Malfacine. Na final, apertou o pescoço de Ivaniel Cavalcanti.

No pluma, Guilherme Mendes deu show e estrangulou Pablo Silva na final para garantir o pacote.

No pena, Theodoro Canal fez 2 a 0 nas vantagens sobre Eduardo Ramos, na decisão.

No leve, vitória do mineiro Cláudio Caloquinha, que finalizou todo mundo e na final apertou o pé de Paulo Ledesma.

No médio, melhor para o “veterano” Pé de Chumbo. Delson Heleno abusou das quedas para fazer 6 a 4 em Tiago Alves.

No meio-pesado, Orlando Zanetti anulou a guarda-tartaruga de Eduardo Telles e fez 8 a 2 para ir para os EUA.

No pesado, Bernardo Faria e Leonardo Nogueira fecharam.

No superpesado, Daniel Azevedo fez 10 a 0 em Luis Bonilha.

No pesadíssimo, Rodrigo Cavaca garantiu presença em mais um Mundial ao derrotar Luiz Felipe Theodoro na decisão do juiz.

Além disso, foi ótimo ver Fernando Tererê ao lado das áreas de luta, sorrindo e tirando fotos com atletas jovens demais para se lembrarem dele lutando.  Bem vindo de volta, Tererê.

Grandes atletas do Jiu-Jitsu estarão em ação neste fim de semana, no ginásio da Uni Ítalo, em São Paulo, onde acontece a SP Cup, evento organizado por Fernando Lopes, o Fepa. Em disputa, estarão 30 pacotes para o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF, que acontece na Califórnia.

“Surpreendeu o grande número de inscritos. São mais de 700 atletas e, na faixa-preta, o nível será muito alto”, conta o Fepa.

Organizado por Fernando Lopes, o Fepa, acontece nos dias 1º e 2 de maio o SP Cup, no Ginásio do Colégio Magno, em São Paulo. Entre os atrativos para a competição da World League Pro Jiu Jitsu, pacotes para o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF, na Califórnia.
