JT Torres foi um dos principais destaques do 2º Southwest BJJ Classic, em Mesa, Arizona. Com duas finalizações, em cima de Samir Chantre e Caio Terra, o aluno de Lloyd Irvin garantiu o prêmio de uma passagem aérea para Lisboa, Portugal, para lutar o Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu em janeiro de 2011.
O outro agraciado com o prêmio foi o campeão da categoria de cima, os pesados, Bruno Bastos.

Na luta contra Samir, JT passou a guarda com sua passagem X. Após controlar a posição, JT pôs o joelho na barriga, pegou as costas, fintou o estrangulamento e, respeitando a filosofia do ataque duplo, terminou a luta com uma chave de braço, a 4 minutos de luta.

Na final, JT encarou o carioca Caio Terra, que começou tentando raspar. JT manteve a postura e tentou pegar as costas, quando Caio levantou-se e ficou por cima. O aluno de Cesar Gracie então tentou manobrar na guarda 50/50, no que Torres escapou a perna, puxou a manga e encaixou um armlock, com 5 minutos de luta. Confira!

JT Torres was one of the main standouts at this weekend’s 2nd Southwest BJJ Classic in Mesa, Arizona. With a pair of submissions, over Samir Chantre and Caio Terra, the Lloyd Irvin student secured the prize of an air ticket to Lisbon, Portugual, to compete at the European Open in January 2011.

The other big winner of the prize was Bruno Bastos, who won the division above, the heavyweight division.

In his match with Samir, JT passed guard using his X-pass. After gaining positional control, JT got knee on belly, back mount, faked a choke and, true to double-attack philosophy, ended the match with an armbar four minutes in.

In the final, JT faced Caio Terra, who started off with a sweep attempt. JT maintained his posture and tried for the back mount, when Caio got up and ended up on top. The Cesar Gracie student then tried to maneuver to 50/50 guard, which Torres escaped from, grabbed Caio’s sleeve and sunk an armbar, five minutes into the match. Check it out!

There were a number of winners at this past weekend’s Second Southwest Classic Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Mesa, Arizona. The biggest names, however, were Bruno Bastos (Nova União) and JT Torres (Lloyd Irvin), who won two plane tickets to compate at the 2011 European Open in Lisbon, Portugal.

At the championship promoted by our GMA Gustavo Dantas, Bastos overcame Carlos Farias (Traven) by an advantage point. Now Torres submitted sensation of the season Caio Terra (Gracie Fighter) via armbar.

A segunda edição do Southwest de Jiu-Jitsu, em Mesa, Arizona, teve muitos vencedores nesse último fim de semana, nos EUA. Os maiores, no entanto, foram Bruno Bastos (Nova União) e JT Torres (Lloyd Irvin), que faturaram as duas passagens aéreas para lutar o Europeu 2011, em Lisboa, Portugal.

No campeonato organizado por nosso GMA Gustavo Dantas, Bastos venceu Carlos Farias (Traven) por uma vantagem. Já Torres finalizou a sensação da temporada Caio Terra (Gracie Fighter), com uma chave de braço.

Gustavo Dantas teaches seminars in Tempe

Vice-president of the Arizona State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (AZBJJF) and leader of team Nova União in the United States Gustavo Dantas still finds time to conduct seminars. Most recently, the black belt taught his techniques to the Tempe, Arizona, police department.

With around twenty-five participants, among them male and female police officers, Dantas went over situations typically to arise on the street, when detaining criminals and even defending themselves from aggressive suspects.

“With MMA’s rise in popularity in Arizona, the police are often put in situations where they face people committing criminal infractions who have fighting backgrounds and use the techniques against the officers. Many of these officers don’t know how to defend themselves in this type of confrontation. They just want to enforce the law, protect people, and it’s important that they be able to control criminals safely,” he states.

Now Gustavo carries on in his busy schedule. His next engagement is the Southwest BJJ Classic, an event he promotes that will count 600 participants on the 16th and 17th of this month in Mesa, Arizona.

Vice-presidente da Federação de Jiu-Jitsu do Arizona (AZSBJJF) e um dos comandantes da Nova União nos EUA, Gustavo Dantas ainda tem tempo para ministrar seminários. O faixa-preta ensinou suas técnicas aos policiais do departamento de polícia de Tempe, em Phoenix, nos Estados Unidos. 

Com aproximadamente 25 participantes, entre eles policiais do sexo masculino e feminino, Dantas visou situações típicas que os mesmos podem encontrar nas ruas, na hora de deter, prender e até se defender de um suspeito.     

“Com a popularidade do MMA no Arizona, os policiais já estiveram em situações que os infratores tinham antecedentes de luta e usaram as técnicas contra os oficiais. Muitos desses oficiais não sabiam como se defender nesse tipo de confronto. Eles querem apenas fazer cumprir a lei, proteger as pessoas, e é importante serem capazes de controlar infratores de forma segura”, comenta.

E Gustavo não para. Os compromissos seguem na organização do  Southwest BJJ Classic, evento que vai contar com 600 participantes nos dias 16 e 17 de outubro, em St. Mesa, no Arizona.
