A partir do dia 28 de maio, os holofotes estarão virados para Long Beach. No palco da IBJJF, veremos os maiores astros e estrelas da cultuada comunidade do Jiu-Jitsu, que vão disputar pegada a pegada os aplausos do respeitável público.

No feminino, como no masculino, a promessa é de um Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu épico. Afinal, vão passar pelo tapete azul da Pirâmide ao menos dez protagonistas de primeira grandeza, como Gabi Garcia, Leticia Ribeiro, Michelle Nicolini, Mackenzie Dern, Bia Mesquita, Luiza Monteiro, Luanna Alzuguir, Hannette Quadros, Sophia Drysdale e Ana Laura Cordeiro, entre outras notáveis, divididas em oito categorias mais o absoluto.

Como num grandioso festival, o Mundial 2014 será marcado também por uma grande estreia. Não de uma atleta, mas de uma nova categoria, a das magrinhas. Melhor para Melissa Danforth, Marcela Lawton e Shiho Yaginuma, que vão lutar pela glória de se tornar a primeira campeã mundial faixa-preta no peso-galo.

Ausente no ano passado, Leticia Ribeiro está de volta a sua divisão, pluma, buscando seu oitavo (sim, oitavo) título como faixa-preta. Depois de seu desempenho em Abu Dhabi, em abril, a recém-promovida faixa-preta Ariadne Oliveira será o grande obstáculo de Leticia na busca ao título.

Nova atleta do plantel do Legacy, a lutadora Michelle Nicolini disputou e venceu, no ano passado, a divisão meio-pesado. Este ano ela volta ao peso-pena e deve ter Mackenzie Dern como principal oponente. Nadia Melo e Tammi Musumeci, campeã no Pan 2014, embolam a categoria.

O peso leve pode novamente desembocar numa decisão entre as altamente técnicas Bia Mesquita e Luiza Monteiro. Fabiana Borges vai brigar para tirar uma delas da final.

Campeã em 2013, Luanna Alzuguir subiu este ano para o meio-pesado, de modo que a divisão médio em 2014 ficou repleta de aspirantes de respeito. Vice-campeã de 2013, Vanessa Oliveira tem boas chances, mas Janni Larsson, Shanti Abelha e Sophia Drysdale não vão facilitar.

Já o peso meio-pesado tem tudo pra ser “A Divisão” no feminino do Mundial 2014. O enredo é promissor. Luanna Alzuguir quer seu quinto ouro num peso. Hannette Staack busca o título de número oito também. Para aumentar os contornos dramáticos, a invicta Ana Laura Cordeiro retorna após seis anos de afastamento, por conta de uma séria lesão nas costas. Quem leva? Não sabemos.

As moças do pesado estão empolgadas para o Mundial 2014. Pela primeira vez em anos, o nome de Gabi Garcia não figura entre as concorrentes ao topo. Com o advento da novíssima divisão superpesado, a estrela da Alliance teve de sair da categoria que vinha dominando. Assim, a corrida entre Andressa Correa, campeã do ano passado (ao fechar com Gabi), Luzia Fernandes, Fernanda Mazzelli, Tammy Griego e outras ganha em adrenalina.

Finalmente, a divisão superpesado deve servir de aquecimento para Gabi Garcia em sua empreitada por uma terceira medalha de ouro do absoluto. Além da estrela da Alliance, disputam o título Andréa Pereira e a finlandesa Venla Luukkonen.

GMA Drysdale BJJ in Las Vegas, NV is welcoming back Abmar Barbosa to teach classes twice a week. Barbosa earned his black belt under head instructor Robert Drysdale in 2008 and has since traveled the world training, teaching and competing.

But he’s back and scheduled for a lunchtime class every Monday and Wednesday from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

Other Jiu-Jitsu instructors besides ADCC and World champion Robert Drysdale include black belts Rodrigo Botti, Sonny Nohara, Sophia Drysdale as well as beginners and kids class instructors Kristian Woodmansee, Matt Villiatora and Gaspar Agabin

Arizona’s premiere all-female Jiu-Jitsu tournament returns for its second installment on May 4, 2013. Headed by stand-out Nova Uniao Brown belt, 2013 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Champion, and promoter of Inspire: All Female Open Mat, Kristina Barlaan, the 2nd Copa Bela boasts a tournament committed to the growth of women in sport Jiu-Jitsu. With divisions for juveniles, adults, and newly added masters division, as well as a brown/black belt absolute pro division offering $1000 to the winner, the tournament continues to push the pace for evolution of females in our sport.

“This is an excellent opportunity for women in the sport to compete and test their skills in a tournament atmosphere. Novice competitors get introduced to the thrills of competing for the first or second time and more advanced competitors get a nice tune-up competition before the 2013 IBJJF World Championship the following month. It’s great to see the women’s Jiu-Jitsu community grow with more seminars, camps, open mats, and, more recently, tournaments dedicated to that growth. Last year, the 1st Copa Bela saw 35 competitors take to the mats, with 4 of those competitors being in the brown/black absolute pro division. A lot of people may see that number and call it small. I call it a start. The very first Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship had 200 competitors and now it’s over 3,000! Of course the Copa Bela isn’t the Pans, but why should I not believe that it has the ability to grow in the same way? If we as a community continue to support these kinds events, then it’s only natural that we will not only see an increase of women in the sport, but an overall increase in women participating in competition,” says Barlaan.
