O anúncio do fim da categoria dos pesos pesados no Strikeforce, na última quinta-feira, deixou alguns lutadores órfãos. Nomes como Brett Rogers, Andrei Arlovski, Shane Del Rosário, Sergei Kharitonov, além de Fedor Emelianenko, sem contrato, por enquanto estão sem um grande evento para lutarem nos EUA.

Outros, como Josh Barnett e Daniel Cormier, que disputam a final do GP dos pesos pesados, em março, estão cotados para engrossarem o caldo da divisão dos pesados no Ultimate – caminho que tomou, por exemplo, Fabricio Werdum.

Segundo os cartolas, o término da categoria se deveu à falta de lutadores talentosos entre os mais pesados. O UFC comprou o Strikeforce em março e já renovou contrato com o canal de televisão Showtime, que vai transmitir oito etapas do evento em 2012.

The demise of the Strikeforce heavyweight division, announced last Thursday, has left a number of fighters orphans. Names like Brett Rogers, Andrei Arlovski, Shane del Rosário, Sergei Kharitonov, not to mention Fedor Emelianko are all contract-less and without a major event to fight at in the USA.

Others, like Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier—the finalists in the heavyweight GP final next March—, are tipped to bolster the UFC heavyweight fray, a route already taken by Fabrício Werdum, for example.

According to promotional upper management, the dissolution of the division comes down to the dearth of top heavyweight talent. The UFC purchased Strikeforce last March and renewed the promotion’s contract with Showtime cable-television channel, which will broadcast eight shows in 2012.

In the GP semifinals, there will be no lack of excitement as Josh Barnett squares off with Sergio Kharitanov and Antonio Bigfoot taking on Daniel Cormier, who steps in to take the place of Alistair Overeem, who is now scheduled to face Brock Lesnar in the UFC.

Still on the main card. Ronaldo Jacaré will defend his middleweight title against Luke Rockhold. Now Roger Gracie will be looking to hang on to his unbeaten record against King Mo Lawal. To add even more spice to the mix, former champion Rafael Feijão will have his work cut out for him against Yoel Romero, while Evangelista Cyborg tests his mettle against Jordan Mein and fast-rising up-and-comer Amanda Nunes faces off with Alexis Davis.

Pelas semifinais do GP, não vai faltar emoção nos desafios de Josh Barnett contra Sergei Kharitonov e de Antonio Pezão, que encara Daniel Cormier, substituto de Alistair Overeem – o holandês agora encara Brock Lesnar no UFC.

Ainda no card principal, Ronaldo Jacaré defende o título de médios contra Luke Rockhold. Já Roger Gracie tenta manter a invencibilidade contra King Mo Lawal. Para transformar a edição numa das melhores em todos os tempos da organização, o ex-campeão Rafael Feijão vai ter Yoel Romero pela frente, Evangelista Cyborg se testa com Jordan Mein e a promissora Amanda Nunes vai encarar Alexis Davis.

Segundo o site do Strikeforce, a transmissão de tv começa às 22h30 na costa leste dos EUA, ou às 23h30 no horário de Brasília, mas infelizmente nenhum canal disponível no Brasil trasnmitirá o evento.

This Saturday in Dallas defined the heavyweight GP semifinalists.

In the main event of the evening Fabrício Werdum was unable to put his Jiu-Jitsu to work the way he did against Fedor Emelianenko previously. Alistair Overeem’s striking prevailed. Werdum tried on various occasions to get him into his guard, but the Dutchman wisely chose to keep it standing. When the black belt finally managed to get Alistair to go with him to the ground, his attacks came up short. Overeem defended handily and got the better of the three rounds of action, earning him the unanimous decision in his favor. Now he’ll face off with Antonio Pezão in the next stage.

Josh Barnett didn’t face much opposition in Brett Rogers. In the first round, Barnett used the grappling skills that won him a No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu World Championship to good effect. He got the takedown and the mount in the first, while the second saw him swiftly finish with an arm-and-neck choke just 1:17 minutes into the round. The “Baby Faced Assassin” will square off with Sergei Kharitanov in the grand prix semifinals.

The main card fight between Gesias Cavancante and Justin Wilcox ended in a disappointing no-contest.

O Strikeforce definiu na noite deste sábado, em Dallas, as semifinais do GP de pesos pesados.

Na principal luta da noite, Fabrício Werdum não conseguiu impor novamente seu Jiu-Jitsu, o que fizera antes contra Fedor Emelianenko. Contra Alistair Overeem, prevaleceu o jogo do striker. Werdum tentou diversas vezes chamar para a guarda, mas o holandês, malandro, continuava em pé. Quando o faixa-preta conseguiu trazer Alistair para o chão, não conseguiu atacar. Overeem soube se defender e foi melhor na luta em pé nas três parciais, o que valeu a decisão unânime a seu favor. Agora ele encara Antonio Pezão na próxima fase.

Josh Barnett não teve tanto trabalho contra Brett Rogers. No primeiro round, Barnett, que já foi campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono, usou bem o jogo de chão. Quedou e montou. Na segunda etapa, em 1mi17s, finalizou rápido com um katagatame. O “Cara de Bebê Assassino” segue para a semifinal do grand prix contra Sergei Kharitonov .

No card principal, resultado frustrante na luta entre Gesias Cavalcante e Justin Wilcox, que acabou em no contest.

O corpo e o olhar eram parecidos. A explosão e a rapidez, não.

O mito Fedor Emelianenko, de 34 anos, pisou na jaula do Strikeforce esta noite, em Nova Jersey, buscando provar que ainda era o favorito para o título do Grand Prix, o renovado formato de torneio em que ele se acostumou a brilhar – e a vencer – no Japão, nos tempos do Pride.

Mas Antonio Pezão estava no seu caminho. Com uma montada eficaz, quedas eficientes e especialmente uma calma de arrancar aplausos, o gigante paraibano castigou o rosto de Fedor no segundo assalto. Não adiantaram as tentativas de escorregar e fugir da montada, estratégia que havia dado certo até com Minotauro em priscas eras (leia-se, em 2004).

Contra Pezão, Fedor ficou. As marretadas não foram suficientes para o juiz interromper, mas causaram danos severos no olho direito do ex-Imperador, olho que se fechou quando soou o gongo do segundo assalto. Após a interrupção do médico, enquanto Pezão fazia a festa e tentava conter as lágrimas, emocionado, Fedor falou ao microfone no meio do palco.

Disse, em russo, que talvez seja a hora de parar, sim. Se o pessoal do Strikeforce for sagaz, como costuma ser, arma uma luta de despedida milionária.

Pezão, por sua vez, prossegue. O faixa-preta da ATT agora enfrenta o vencedor de Fabricio Werdum x Alistair Overeem (atual campeão dos pesados), luta marcada para abril.

Na primeira luta do GP de pesados, Andrei Arlovski vinha bem na trocação e contava com o apoio do público. No entanto, Sergei Kharitonov mostrou por que era uma das grandes pedreiras do Pride. Depois de acertar o queixo de Arlovski, socou o oponente ao chão até a interrupção. O juiz separou aos 2min49s do R1.

Dois combates que antecederam o GP trouxeram muita emoção. Shane Del Rosario, aluno de Giva Santana, seguiu os ensinamentos do mestre, rei do armlock. Finalizou bonito com a posição Lavar Johnson aos 4min31s da primeira etapa e arrancou muitos aplausos do público, prova de que o americano também gosta de Jiu-Jitsu no MMA. Já Chad Griggs e Gian Villante trocaram para valer, com socos e chutes. Qualquer um dos dois poderia cair a qualquer momento e quem levou a pior foi Villante, nocauteado aos 2min49s do assalto inicial.

Na primeira luta do card principal, entre dois strikers, Valetijn Overeem surpreendeu contra Ray Sefo. Depois de uma breve trocação, Overeem tratou de derrubar, chegou do lado e finalizou em apenas 1min37s de combate. Mérito do holandês, que aprimorou o Jiu-Jitsu. Já a Sefo, recomenda-se umas aulinhas de chão.

Na preliminar mais aguardada, Igor Gracie não deu brechas e faturou a terceira vitória no MMA. Depois de levar um susto com uma joelhada logo no início, Igor aplicou uma bela queda, pegou as costas e terminou a primeira etapa montado no oponente. No segundo assalto, o Gracie tratou de derrubar, montou e apertou no katagatame, golpe que acabou com as chances de Salgado para a alegria do mestre Renzo, ao lado do Cage.

The body and stare were similar. The explosiveness and speed wasn’t.

Last night in New Jersey, Fedor Emelianenko, 34, the myth, stepped into the Strikeforce cage looking to prove he was still the favorite to take the Grand Prix title, again competing in the tournament format he used to shine in – and win in – in Japan, back in the days of the Pride FC event.

But Antonio “Big Foot” Silva had his own plans. With a stalwart mount, efficient takedowns and a cool air about him, the giant from the Brazilian state of Paraiba punished Fedor’s face in the second round. His attempts to slip away and escape the mount were in vain, no longer effective like they were against Minotauro in the days of old (circa 2004).

Against Big Foot, there Fedor stayed. The hammer fists weren’t enough to cause the ref to stop the battle, but they did cause enough damage to the former emperor’s left eye that is closed up completely as the bell ending the second round sounded. Following intervention from the doctor, while Big Foot fought to contain his tears of joy, Fedor spoke through the microphone.

In Russian, he said perhaps it was time. If the Strikeforce gang has its wits about them – like they tend to – they’ll set up a big-money farewell fight.

Now Big Foot forges ahead. The ATT black belt will now face the winner of the April bout between Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem (current heavyweight champion).

In the first fight of the heavyweight GP, Andrei Arlovski was doing well in the standup action and had the crowd behind him. However, Sergei Kharitanov showed why he was at the top of the heap at Pride FC. After landing a punch square to Arlovski’s chin, he pounded away on his downed opponent until the referee stepped in, 2:49 minutes into the opening round.

Two bouts preceding the GP brought loads of excitement. Shane Del Rosario, a Giva Santana student, followed the teachings of his teacher (the king of the armbar) to the T. He did a swell job finishing off Lavar Johnson with the hold 4:31 minutes into the first round and drew applause from the crowd, showing how Jiu-Jitsu is growing in the good graces of the American MMA-viewing public. Now Chad Griggs and Gian Villante went balls to the wall with punches and kicks. Either one of the two could have fallen at any moment and the won who did was Villante, knocked out 2:49 minutes into the opener.

In the first fight of the main card, between two striking specialists, Valentijn Overeem had a surprise in store for Ray Sefo. After a brief standup exchange, Overeem went for the takedown, made it to side control and submitted his quarry in 1:37 minutes of fighting. Props to the Dutchman, who did a good job with his Jiu-Jitsu. Now Sefo could follow suit and take some classes himself.

In a much-anticipated preliminary fight, Igor Gracie left nothing to chance in notching his third MMA win. After a scare from an early knee, Igor landed a sightly takedown, took back mount and ended the first round mounting his opponent. In the second, Gracie got the takedown, mounted and squeezed out an arm-and-neck choke, ending Salgado’s chances, to the joy of his master Renzo, who was cageside.

No dia 12 de fevereiro, em Nova Jersey, vai ter início o aguardado grand prix de pesos pesados do Strikeforce. Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Pezão, Andrei Arlovski, Sergei Kharitonov, Fabrício Werdum, Alistair Overeem, Josh Barnett e Brett Rogers são os convocados.

Na edição do dia 12, Fedor Emelianenko encara Pezão, enquanto Andrei Arlovski enfrenta Sergei Kharitonov. No evento seguinte do GP, Fabrício Werdum combate com Alistair Overeem e Josh Barnett duela com Brett Rogers.

GRACIEMAG.com escutou os palpites de alguns especialistas em GP, que vivenciaram os áureos tempos do sistema de disputas no extinto Pride.

“O franco favorito é o Fedor, ele é o cara. Acredito, sim, que o raio possa cair no mesmo lugar duas vezes e tenho muita fé nos brasileiros. Gostaria muito de ver a final entre o Werdum e o Pezão, o que seria excelente, mas ainda acho o russo favorito”, diz o ex-treinador da BTT Bebeo Duarte.

“Fica a minha torcida para o Werdum, aposto nele!”, fala o treinador da Chute Boxe Rudimar Fedrigo, que acompanhou nos GPs feras como Maurício Shogun e Wanderlei Silva.

“Sou suspeito para falar, mas gosto muito do Pezão. Entretanto, não posso esquecer o Fedor e o Barnett. Vai ser duro ali dentro!”, lança Rodrigo Minotauro.

GRACIEMAG.com listened to the predictions of a number of GP specialists who have been around since the olden days of the Pride FC tournaments.

“The firm favorite is Fedor, he’s the man to beat. Yes, I believe lightning can strike twice in the same place and I have faith in the Brazilians. I would love to see a final between Werdum and Pezão, which would be excellent, but I still feel the Russian is favored to win,” says former BTT coach Bebeo Duarte.

“I’m rooting for Werdum, my money’s on him!” says Chute Boxe trainer Rudimar Fedrigo, who cornered beasts like Maurício Shogun and Wanderlei Silva in past Gps.

“I’m kind of biased, but I like Pezão (Antonio Silva) for this one. However, I can’t forget about Fedor and Barnett. It’ll be rough in there!” wagers Rodrigo Minotauro.

Even coming off a loss, Fedor Emelianenko manages to stand out among beasts like Josh Barnett, Alistair Overeem, Antonio Pezão, Andrei Arlovski, Sergei Kharitonov, Brett Rogers, and Fabrício Werdum, the last person to beat him. That is the burly lineup of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix, balm for the longing of lovers of the now-defunct Pride, and Emelianenko is the big star of the team.

For the opening bout, against Pezão on February 12, Fedor is going through his preparations in his country, Russia. He will likely have some heavyweight help, though, in the form of one-time UFC title challenger Shane Carwin.

“Fedor is cool with me. He’s a great person and a great fighter. I might fly to Russia for us to train together, if all goes according to plan,” posted Carwin on the Underground forum.
