A Federação Internacional de Jiu-Jitsu (IBJJF) decidiu alterar os nomes das divisões sênior para a temporada de campeonatos em 2014.

A partir do próximo ano, nenhuma divisão será chama de sênior.

Veja como fica:

* Master torna-se Master 1

* Sênior 1 torna-se Master 2

* Sênior 2 torna-se Master 3

* Sênior 3 torna-se Master 4

* Sênior 4 torna-se Master 5

* Sênior 5 torna-se Master 6

Registration is open for the annual U.S. Open XVIII event run by GMA member Claudio Franca. Beyond the years of experience this tournament holds, this year will be better because of the upgrade in location. The event will be October 19-20.

The new venue for the open will be at the Kaiser Permanente Arena, home of the Santa Cruz Warriors professional basketbal team. The space is a huge 15,000 square foot area for the mats and plenty of seating in the stadium bleachers for family, friends and team to come support their athletes.

Another upgrade is the livestream of the event with commentators. Also added is a new kids division.

The New England Massachusetts State Championship is happening June 15 in Milford, MA. The tournament held by the MASSBJJF caters to both kids and adults, masters and seniors.

Uma das competições de Jiu-Jitsu mais charmosas e tradicionais no calendário da IBJJF terá início nesta quinta-feira, no ginásio do Tijuca Tênis Clube, no Rio. É o Internacional de Masters e Sêniors, evento que reúne a “molecada” da arte suave que já passou da casa dos 30 anos. Entre os inscritos, feras do pano que fizeram e ainda fazem história no esporte, lutando ou ensinando.

Gene Pace, a good-natured 78-year-old grandfather, has been training Jiu-Jitsu at Gracie Barra Costa Mesa, California, for the last 15 years.

Upon earning his black belt last Wednesday, Gene was featured in the “Daily Pilot”, newspaper in an article by Sarah Peters with photos by Don Leach, and with the story came some lessons.

Gene trains at GB twice a week, which seems about right for an elder practitioner not to suffer too many injuries.

The promotion ceremony gathered around a hundred of the new black belt’s friends and fans.

“It was pretty touching,” admitted Gene with a chuckle.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START JIU-JITSU

Mike Buckels, a teacher at GB Costa Mesa, highlighted the greatest quality of the senior 5 black belt (because there’s no such thing as a senior 8 or 9 division).

“He’s Mr Consistency. He never misses a class, ever,” says Buckels, who only had one black belt under him before Gene. “He does exactly what he’s taught. If you show him a position, he’ll perform the movement perfectly.”

Buckels says he’s judicious when pairing Gene up with a sparring partner but stresses that he is not to be underestimated.

GIVING UP HALFWAY IS WEAK

Gene can hang with me in training—I’m over 80 kg—and takes me down. He usually trains with guys about 55 years younger than he is,” says Mike, pointing out one of the peculiarities of Jiu-Jitsu, a gentle martial art where technique can overcome stamina and brute strength.

Gene Pace started practicing martial arts as a way to exercise and to give his grandchildren something to get excited about.

“I thought to myself, ‘They’re not going to kill me, and I might just learn something new.’ Once I got started, I thought, “Am I going to give up and embarrass my grandkids? No way, I’m not going to disrespect them like that. And everyone kept training,” recalls the burly granddad.

Pace’s finish-what-you-started attitude was key in making it to black belt.

Gene Pace, um simpático avô de 78 anos, treina Jiu-Jitsu há mais de 15 anos, na escola Gracie Barra Costa Mesa, na Califórnia.

Ao receber sua faixa-preta, na última quinta-feira, Gene virou artigo do jornal “Daily Pilot”, e a reportagem de Sarah Peters, com foto de Don Leach, deixou algumas lições.

Gene treinava na GB duas vezes por semana, o que parece o correto para evitar maiores lesões em praticantes de idade avançada.

A cerimônia de graduação reuniu cerca de cem amigos e fãs do novo velho faixa-preta.

“Foi um pouco emocionante”, admitiu Gene, com uma gargalhada.

Nunca é tarde demais para começar no Jiu-Jitsu

Mike Buckels, professor da GB Costa Mesa, destacou a grande qualidade do faixa-preta sênior 5 (apenas porque não existe sênior 8 ou 9).

“Ele é o Sr. Consistência. Nunca perde uma aula, jamais”, disse Buckels, que tinha apenas um faixa-preta antes de Gene. “Ele executa exatamente o que é ensinado. Se você mostra uma posição para ele, ele vai buscar fazer aquele movimento perfeitamente”.

Buckels contou que é criterioso na hora de casar a dupla de Gene, mas reforça que ele não deve ser subestimado.

Desistir no meio do caminho é fraqueza

“Gene consegue treinar comigo – e eu peso mais de 80kg – e me derrubar. Ele treina normalmente com caras quase 55 anos mais novo que ele”, diz Mike, reforçando uma das peculiaridades do Jiu-Jitsu, arte suave em que a técnica compensa o gás e a força física.

Gene Pace começou a treinar artes marciais pelo exercício e para animar seus netinhos.

“Pensei comigo, eles não vão me matar, e de repente eu ainda aprendo alguma coisa nova. Uma vez que comecei, tive de pensar: vou desistir e envergonhar meus netos? Nada, não se pode ser desrespeitoso assim. E todo mundo continuou treinando”, relembra o vovô casca-grossa.

A atitude de Pace de “termine-o-que-você-começou” foi vital para chegar à faixa-preta.

“It’s a way of celebrating my birthday. I want to turn 40 fighting among the young guys, ” Gurgel told GRACIEMAG.com.

With the decision, from the four-time world champion General of Alliance will complicate the lives of a lot of kids in the category that includes Igor Silva, Igor Araujo and Marko Helen, as well as Bernardo Faria, a Gurgel disciple.
