Depois do ouro no Mundial Sem Kimono, Beatriz Mesquita encerrou o calendário esportivo 2010 mais uma vez no alto do pódio. Detentora do cinturão da World Cup 2009, a faixa-marrom da Gracie Humaitá confirmou o favoritismo defendendo o título no último fim de semana, em São Paulo.

Na competição, Bia finalizou Luiza Monteiro com um estrangulamento pelas costas, aos 2min de luta, o que valeu o prêmio de R$1.500, além de permanecer com o cinturão por mais um ano.

“Estou muito feliz, porque pude mostrar que o Jiu-Jitsu feminino também tem seu brilho técnico. Ainda embolsei uma graninha para o Natal!”, comenta aos risos.

Agora a lutadora de Saquarema, no litoral fluminense do Rio de Janeiro, foca os próximos desafios.

“Agora é treinar muito para a seletiva de Abu Dhabi e para o Europeu, em janeiro”, finaliza.

Following her gold medal-winning performance at the No-Gi Worlds, Beatriz Mesquita wrapped up the 2010 competition calendar atop the winners’ podium yet again. Holder of the 2009 World Cup belt, the Gracie Humaitá brown belt confirmed her favorite status defending her title last weekend in São Paulo.

At the competition, Bia submitted Luiza Monteiro with a choke from back mount two minutes in, yielding here $R 1,500, as well as the honor of keeping her belt for yet another year.

“I’m happy because I was able to show female Jiu-Jitsu has technical shine to it too. Plus I got some money for Christmas,” she says with a jovial laugh.

Now the fighter from the coastal town of Saquarema is focused on her upcoming challenges.

“Now I’m going to train a lot for the Abu Dhabi trials and the European Open, in January,” she says in finishing.

Campeã na categoria leve e vice no absoluto do Mundial Sem Kimono, realizado este mês em Long Beach, na Califórnia, na volta dos EUA Beatriz Mesquita teve direito a uma recepção honrosa em sua cidade, Saquarema, no norte fluminense do Rio de Janeiro. Na bagagem, a faixa-marrom trouxe o primeiro ouro em Mundiais disputando contra faixas-pretas.   

Bia foi homenageada com uma baita festa. Parentes, amigos, lutadores e admiradores se reuniram para comemorar o desempenho de Bia nos dojôs. Prefeita da cidade, Franciane Motta foi receber a ilustre cidadã de Saquarema, além de outros representantes importantes da cidade, entre eles vereadores e promotores.      

Para finalizar o ano, Bia defende o seu cinturão no World Cup, no dia 4 e 5 de dezembro, em São Paulo.

Lightweight champion and absolute runner-up at last month’s No-Gi Worlds in Long Beach, California Beatriz Mesquita was received with a homecoming party in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro state. With her in her baggage the brown belt brought the Worlds gold medal she won disputing against black belts.

Bia’s party gathered relatives, friends, fighters, and admirers in celebration of Bia’s performance on the mat. The city’s mayor, Franciane Motta, received the illustrious Saquarema native along with other dignitaries, among them town councilmen and district attorneys.

To cap off the year, Bia will defend her World Cup title on December 4 and 5 in São Paulo.

Tipped early last year by GRACIEMAG.com as a major promise for 2010, Beatriz Mesquita lived up to expectations. At the No-Gi Worlds in California, the Gracie Humaitá representative conquered yet another title – at lightweight – and barely missed taking gold in the absolute, taking silver instead.

“It made me really happy because it’s my first world title at brown/black belt; I didn’t have one yet. Besides that, it was my second no-gi championship. The first was last year’s Brazilian Nationals, but I only had one match. So it was great. I only trained in San Diego with Letícia (Ribeiro) and Fabrício Morango for two weeks, and for the no-gi experience, I feel it was really great. Of course, I really wanted to win the absolute, but I’m content!” she tells GRACIEMAG.com.

At weight Bia had two matches. First she overcame Claudia Gadelha by an advantage point, before going into the final with Michelle Nicolini – a side challenge at the event for the athlete.

“We had two really tough bouts. In the weight group, I got on top and scored two points after she fell out of the area with a footlock in place. When I returned to the middle, I managed to close guard and got the finish with an armbar.”

In the absolute, the brown belt had two matches before again facing Nicolini.

“It was a tough match again. I tried pulling guard and she went for my foot, which was already sore from the first final. I ended up tapping out and even got a little hurt,” she admits.

And training carries on full swing. Bia has a dream to fulfill in the 2011 season.

“The start of the year will be frenetic. There’s the Abu Dhabi qualifier in January followed by the European Open. Then comes the Pan and the Worlds, which is my main focus for 2011. I want that gi title too.”

Beatriz is from Saquarema, a coastal Rio de Janeiro town better known for good waves for surfing than for Jiu-Jitsu. But the stalwart competitor represents her town well on the mat. That’s why she is frequently paid tribute.

“Over there I train with Luis Fernando, who’s from Gracie Humaitá. But I’m also always going to Gracie Tijuca, Humaitá, and before big events, to San Diego to train with Letícia,” she says.

“When I return, my parents always prepare a surprise for me along with the folks who support me there in Saquarema. There’s often a party when I get home,” she says in finishing.

Apontada pelo GRACIEMAG.com, no início do ano, como uma das apostas para 2010, Beatriz Mesquita não decepcionou. No Mundial Sem Kimono, na Califórnia, a representante da Gracie Humaitá conquistou mais um título, no peso leve, e por pouco também não faturou o ouro no absoluto, ficando com a prata.

“Fiquei muito feliz, porque é o meu primeiro título mundial na faixa-marrom e preta, ainda não tinha. Além disso, era o meu segundo campeonato sem kimono. O primeiro foi no Brasileiro do ano passado, mas fiz apenas uma luta. Então foi ótimo. Treinei apenas duas semanas em San Diego com a Letícia (Ribeiro) e o Fabrício Morango e, pela experiência sem kimono, acho que foi muito bom. Claro, também queria ter vencido o absoluto, mas estou satisfeita!”, fala ao GRACIEMAG.com.

No peso, Bia fez duas lutas. Primeiro derrotou Claudia Gadelha por uma vantagem, antes da final contra Michelle Nicolini, um desafio a parte para a atleta neste evento.

“Fizemos duas lutas muito duras. Na categoria, fiquei por cima e fiz dois pontos depois que ela saiu para fora com a chave de pé encaixada. Quando voltou para o meio, consegui fechar a guarda e finalizei com um armlock.”

No absoluto, a faixa-marrom fez duas lutas antes do segundo confronto contra Nicolini.

“Novamente a luta estava dura. Tentei puxar para guarda e ela foi no meu pé, que já estava dolorido da outra final. Acabei batendo e até machucou um pouco”, admite.

E os treinos não param. 2011 já começa a todo vapor e Bia tem um sonho a ser realizado na próxima temporada.

“O início de ano já vai ser frenético. Tem a seletiva para Abu Dhabi, em janeiro, e logo em seguida o Europeu. Depois vem o Pan e o Mundial, que é o meu principal foco em 2011. Quero esse título de kimono também.”

Beatriz é de Saquarema, cidade litorânea do Rio de Janeiro, mais conhecida pelas boas ondas para o surfe do que para o Jiu-Jitsu. Mas a casca-grossa representa bem a cidade nos dojôs. Por isso, costuma receber homenagens.

“Treino lá com o Luis Fernando, que é da Gracie Humaitá. Mas vou sempre também na Gracie Tijuca, no Humaitá e, antes dos eventos grandes, para San Diego, com a Letícia”, conta.

“Quando volto, meus pais sempre me preparam uma surpresa ao lado do pessoal que me apóia lá em Saquarema. Geralmente, quando eu chego, tem festa”, encerra.
