Deemed today one of the greatest representatives of BJJ in mixed martial arts, Demian Maia has been around the block. On October 20, 2007, he was stepping inside the Octagon for the first time.

After shining with his superb jiu-jitsu in Brazil, the U.S. and Abu Dhabi, Demian successfully made the move to MMA, racking up six consecutive wins with three submissions. Then came his UFC debut at event No. 77 in Cincinatti. It was a bout in the middleweight division, where he would go on to climb and take a shot at Anderson Silva’s belt two years later.

His first opponent in the UFC was Ryan Jensen, who had 11 wins and two losses at that point. Demian started out aggressive and got a takedown. Jensen didn’t accept his fate, and kept reacting competently to Demian’s attempts. But then the Brazilian passed an arm under his opponent’s chin and squeezed, ending the fight in the first round and getting the Submission of the Night bonus.

He scored five back-to-back tapout wins in the UFC (against Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason MacDonald, Nate Quarry and Chael Sonnen), but life is no walk in the park for anybody. A Jiu-Jitsu black belt with smooth moves, Demian Maia has now had to cut weight after a string of defeats and will be making his welterweight debut this Saturday at UFC 148.

“It’s funny because early in my career as a UFC middleweight I’d usually walk around at around 85kg, fight at 83.9 kg. Going back to 85 kg and then having to drop to 77 kg reminded me how having extra weight doesn’t necessarily mean I’m stronger. I feel quicker and don’t feel I have any issues where strength is concerned, so I feel that even though I had a hard time dropping weight, I did the right thing,” Demian is quoted as saying on the UFC website.

The São Paulo native will be taking on Korea’s Dong Hyun Kim, who has but a single blemish on his record: a knockout loss to Carlos Condit, the owner of the divisional interim belt.

“Like any good fighter, he presents a number of challenges and difficulties,” says Demian in the article. “I see Kim as a solid competitor, and for the level he reached in judo, he has certainly shown the level of dedication and discipline he has. He’s a complete fighter, is aggressive, and has a solid background. It’s an important fight for the both of us; it’s a fight that will be a boon to whoever wins it,” wagers the former Brazilian national Jiu-Jitsu champion.

“Moving to the welterweight division is both a blessing and a curse, in a way. It’s a blessing because every athlete wants to have the means to make it to the top of their sport, and it’s a curse because any welterweight fighter will have to walk on burning coals to get past Carlos Condit, Rory McDonald, Martin Kampmann, Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger, Josh Koshcheck and the rest, until getting a shot at Georges St-Pierre,” says the Fabio Gurgel black belt.

“I’m working hard with my team for this fight. I know what it means, and I’m really glad to be a part of UFC 148. I’m going to give it my best, and I truly hope that it’s a fight that pleases the fans and will be the start of a new march, step by step,” he says in closing.

Ele emplacou cinco finalizações seguidas no UFC (Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason McDonald, Nate Quarry, e Chael Sonnen), mas a vida não é fácil para ninguém. Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu com estilo suave, Demian Maia precisou baixar de peso após sucessivas derrotas e estreia no peso meio-médio neste sábado, no UFC 148.

“É engraçado, porque no começo da minha carreira, como peso médio no UFC, eu geralmente andava com 85kg ou algo assim, e lutava com 83,9kg. Voltar aos 85 kg e ter de baixar para 77kg me faz lembrar que o peso extra não significa necessariamente mais força para mim. Eu me sinto mais rápido, e não sinto nenhum problema quanto à minha força, então acredito que mesmo sendo difícil perder peso, foi a coisa certa a fazer”, disse Demian, no site do UFC.

O paulista enfrenta o coreano Dong Hyun Kim, que tem apenas uma derrota na carreira: para Carlos Condit, dono do cinturão interino da categoria.

“Como qualquer lutador bom, ele apresenta vários desafios e dificuldades”, diz Demian. “Vejo o Kim como um competidor sólido, e para alguém estar no nível que ele estava como judoca, certamente mostra o comprometimento e disciplina que ele tem. Ele é um cara completo, agressivo e com uma boa base. É uma luta importante para nós dois, é uma luta que irá erguer quem quer que vença”, aposta o campeão brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu.

“Ir para a divisão dos meio-médios é uma benção e uma maldição, de certa forma. Uma benção porque todo atleta quer ter meios de chegar ao topo do esporte, e uma maldição porque qualquer lutador com 77kg vai ter de andar em cima de brasa para passar por Carlos Condit, Rory McDonald, Martin Kampmann, Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberguer, Josh Koscheck, entre outros, até conseguir uma chance contra Georges St-Pierre”, comentou o faixa-preta de Fabio Gurgel.

“Estou trabalhando duro com minha equipe para esta luta, eu sei o que ela significa, e estou muito feliz em fazer parte do UFC 148. Vou dar meu melhor e realmente espero que seja uma luta que agrade os fãs, e o começo para uma nova caminhada, passo a passo”, concluiu.

Nessa reflexão, Demian fala sobre os medos e inseguranças de um lutador de MMA, e já menciona Anderson Silva, com quem batalharia em Abu Dhabi três anos depois.

“Por que tudo isso? Todo esse estresse, toda essa tensão? É o que me perguntava no vestiário do UFC 77, poucas horas antes de entrar para lutar. É assim que me sinto toda vez que estou num campeonato, seja de Jiu-Jitsu ou vale-tudo. Quando eu era faixa-azul achava que um dia essa sensação iria acabar… Doce ilusão. Quanto mais profissional você fica, maior é a responsabilidade e, consequentemente, maior é a pressão.

“Agora, na maior organização de vale-tudo do mundo, a tensão foi grande, mas não superior à minha felicidade de estar lá. Me preparei a vida inteira, não resolvi fazer vale-tudo por dinheiro ou para satisfazer meu ego. Desde criança sonhava em ser o melhor lutador do mundo, com uns 9 anos de idade já queria ser lutador. Comprava livros de karatê e ficava imitando as defesas pessoais com alguns amigos. Tinha feito um ano de judô, mas era muito pequeno, nem me lembro bem. Aos 12 anos comecei a treinar kung-fu, depois um pouco de karatê – influenciado pelos filmes da época.

“Sonhava com um evento como o que havia visto no filme ‘O Grande Dragão Branco’, com Jean Claude Van Damme. Mas tudo isso era coisa de filme, algo distante, que talvez só existisse clandestinamente… Era assim que eu pensava até uma fatídica noite de 1992. Nessa data eu estava no local certo: o ginásio Mauro Pinheiro, em São Paulo. Três atletas desconhecidos do Jiu-Jitsu – pelo menos para mim – se preparavam para lutar contra um pessoal do full-contact e do kung-fu. Uma lavada! Os lutadores de Jiu-Jitsu não tomaram conhecimento dos adversários e ganharam as lutas rapidamente. Foi meu primeiro contato com a arte suave e foi quando comecei a pensar em treinar. E antes que me esqueça, aqueles ‘desconhecidos’ eram Marcelo Behring, Ralph Gracie e Renzo Gracie.

“Na noite do Ultimate toda essa história veio na minha cabeça. Sei que nasci para lutar e que, principalmente, trabalhei duro treinando minha mente e meu corpo para este momento. E posso dizer que toda a tensão vai embora quando entro por aquele corredor. Para mim, aliás, é a melhor parte. Na verdade minha vontade era de rir de felicidade. Acho até mais confortável o MMA do que o Jiu-Jitsu esportivo. Muitas pessoas se abalam quando estão diante de uma multidão como a que esteve presente em Cincinati no dia 20 de outubro, cerca de 15 mil pessoas, mas me sinto bem e também orgulhoso em representar uma arte marcial desenvolvida por brasileiros. Uma arte marcial que possibilita a vitória sem a necessidade de nocautear ou lesionar seriamente o adversário.

“Lá dentro, já no octógono, outra alegria. O árbitro da minha luta seria Big John McCarthy. Os primeiros Ultimates a que assisti – com Royce lutando e Big John de juiz – decidiram meu futuro. O UFC é o meu palco agora, e aquele mesmo octógono da época do Royce, que me fez querer ser um lutador, ainda verá muitas apresentações minhas.

Epílogo

“Ganhei a luta e fui para o vestiário. Fiquei num corredorzinho tentando ver as outras lutas. Estava ansioso para ver a luta do Anderson (contra Rich Franklin), pois gosto muito dele e estava torcendo por ele. Foi um show de técnica. Para mim o Anderson é o melhor lutador do mundo atualmente. Só tem um problema, ele é o campeão do meu peso. Naquele corredor, escondido, eu pensava que um dia, se quiser ser campeão do peso médio, vou ter de enfrentá-lo. Acho que ainda vai demorar, posso ganhar ou perder, mas nesse dia terei um sorriso estampado no rosto.”

“Why go through all this? All this stress, all this tension? That’s what I asked myself when in the dressing room at UFC 77, a few hours before going in to fight. And that’s how I feel every time I’m at a championship, whether Jiu-Jitsu or MMA. When I was a blue belt I though that feeling would end… Sweet illusion. The more the professional you become, the greater the responsibility and, consequently, the greater the pressure.

“Now, in the greatest organization in the world, the tension is huge, but it’s not any greater than my joy for being here. I prepared my whole life for this, I didn’t decide to do MMA for money or to satisfy my ego. Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of being the best fighter in the world – I already wanted to be a fighter at nine years of age. I’d buy karate books and would imitate self-defense techniques with some of my friends. I had done a year of judo, but I was really small, I don’t even remember it that well. At twelve I started practicing kung-fu and karate a bit later on – influenced by the movies of the times.

“I dreamed of being in an event like the one I’d seen in the movie “Bloodsport” with Jean-Claude Van Damme. But that was all movie stuff, distant, which perhaps only existed underground… That was how I thought until one fateful night in 1992. On that date I was in the right place: Mauro Pinheiro gymnasium in São Paulo. Three unknown Jiu-Jitsu athletes – at least unknown to me – were getting ready to fight guys from full-contact fighting and from kung-fu. It was a drubbing! The Jiu-Jitsu fighters didn’t bat an eye in quickly beating their opponents. It was my first contact with the gentle art and that was when I started considering training. And before I forget, those ‘unknowns’ were Marcelo Behring, Ralph Gracie and Renzo Gracie.

“On the evening of the UFC that whole story entered my head: I know I was born to fight and, most importantly, I worked hard training my mind and body for this moment. And what I can say is that all the tension goes away when I walk down that corridor. In fact, to me it’s the best part. The truth is I feel like laughing with joy. I even feel more comfortable in MMA than I do in sport Jiu-Jitsu. A lot of people get shaken when faced with as many people as there were in the arena in Cincinnati on October 20 – nearly 15 thousand people –, but I feel good and proud to represent a martial art developed by Brazilians. A martial art that lets you win without having to knock out or injure the adversary.

“In there, in the octagon, there’s another joy. The referee for my fight would be Big John McCarthy. The first UFCs that I watched – with Royce fighting and Big John as referee – determined my future. The UFC is now my stage, and that same octagon from the days of Royce Gracie, who made me want to become a fighter, would host many of my fights.

Epilogue

“I won the fight and headed back to the dressing room. I hung around a corridor trying to see the other fights. I was anxious to see Anderson (against Rich Franklin), since I like him a lot and was rooting for him. It was a show of technique. To me Anderson is the best fighter in the world right now. There’s just one problem, he’s the champion of my weight class. In that corridor, hidden away, I thought of how one day, if I wished to be middleweight champion, I’ll have to face him. I feel it will still be a while, I may win or lose, but on that day I’ll wear a smile on my face.”

This Saturday’s UFC 121 show in Anaheim, California, crowned a new champion. Cain Velasquez ran rampant over Brock Lesnar and is the new king of the heavyweights. In the other fights on the main card, Jake Shields, Diego Sanchez, Matt Hamill, and Brendan Schaub all came up on the right end of the judges’ decisions. Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez

He was undefeated in MMA (9 wins), and so he remains, but now he possesses the coveted UFC heavyweight belt. Brock Lesnar went guns a blazing after his adversary and managed the takedown. But one of Cain’s never-fold spirit. With his enviable endurance, he got out from bottom position and started firing off rounds on Lesnar standing and on the ground. Brock tried to escape, but ended up groggily losing his balance. And the challenger continued to tee off till the bout was called to an end, after 4:12 min of combat. Now Cain will have to defend his title against Brazil’s Junior Cigano, who will be looking to avenge mentor Rodrigo Minotauro’s loss at UFC 110. Brock humbly admitted that his opponent was better on the night.

Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampann

Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields entered the UFC scene as the man tipped to beat the promotion’s current welterweight champion, George St.-Pierre. However, the Cesar Gracie black belt’s welcome matchup wasn’t smooth sailing against Martin Kampmann. During the fight, Shields managed to take the fight to the ground, pass guard, mount, and get back mount, but not without showing significant fatigue for his efforts. Kampann got the best of the standup action and landed damaging knees. In the end, the scorecards gave Shields the nod by split decision, the fighter’s fifteenth win in a row.

Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago

Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago put on a show for the crowd. In the opening round, the officer from Brazil’s Bope police special forces unit had the upper hand. He landed solid strikes standing, got the takedown, and made things complicated for his rival with an arm-triangle. In the second, Diego took the initiative to bring the action to the ground. Paulo managed to invert the situation with a sightly overhead sweep, but Sanchez returned the attack with a swooping takedown. In the final round, Diego returned his efforts to the takedown, achieveing back mount and controlling the fight. A well-earned unanimous decision for the American followed, now recovering from back-to-back losses.

Matt Hamill vs. Tito Ortiz

Matt Hamill was the better fighter, was more effective striking and in takedowns. Over the three rounds, he took the fight to the ground and worked the ground-and-pound to his advantage, throwing strikes and elbows. Tito tried to react, but he had nothing potent to throw at his opponent. After the final bell, the unanimous decision went to Hamill, who notches his fifth win in a row in the UFC.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Brendan Schaub

Brendan Schaub felt right at home against Gabriel Napão. The entire three-round affair played out on the feet. He went to his boxing and managed to take the Brazilian to the ground with a first-round knockdown. Throwing good striking combinations, Brendan dominated the fight, avoided his opponent’s Jiu-Jitsu, and took the unanimous judges’ decision.

O UFC 121, em Anaheim, na Califórnia, fez um novo campeão neste sábado. Cain Velasquez detonou Brock Lesnar e é o novo rei dos pesos peados. Em outras lutas do card principal, mandaram bem Jake Shields, Diego Sanchez, Matt Hamill e Brendan Schaub. Confira os resultados e análises dos principais combates:

Brock Lesnar x Cain Velasquez

Invicto no MMA (9v), assim continua Cain Velasquez, só que agora com o cinturão de pesados do UFC afivelado. Brock Lesnar partiu com tudo para cima e derrubou o adversário. Mas uma das grandes virtudes de Cain é jamais desistir. Dono de um fôlego invejável, saiu de baixo e passou a metralhar Lesnar com socos, seja em pé ou ao chão. Brock tentou se desvencilhar, mas, tonto, caiu desequilibrado. Viu o oponente continuar socando até o combate ser separado, aos 4min12s. Agora o próximo oponente de Cain deve ser o brasileiro Junior Cigano, que poderá vingar a vitória do campeão sobre Rodrigo Minotauro, no UFC 110. Já a Brock restou admitir, humildemente, que o oponente foi melhor nesta noite.      

Jake Shields x Martin Kampmann

Campeão do Strikeforce, Jake Shields chegou ao UFC como o homem indicado a bater o atual campeão de meio-médios, Georges St. Pierre. Entretanto, o faixa-preta de Cesar Gracie não teve moleza na estreia contra Martin Kampmann. Durante a luta, Shields conseguiu quedar, conquistou posições como a passagem de guarda, montada e costas, mas se cansou bastante. Kampmann foi melhor na trocação e acertou boas joelhadas. No fim, as papeletas anotaram decisão dividida para Shields, que chega à 15ª vitória seguida.     

Diego Sanchez x Paulo Thiago

Um espetáculo para o público fizeram Diego Sanchez e Paulo Thiago. No assalto inicial, o policial do Bope foi muito bem. Encaixou bons socos, derrubou e incomodou com o triângulo de braço. Na segunda parcial, quem derrubou foi Diego. Paulo reverteu com uma bela raspagem de balão, mas Sanchez devolveu o ataque com uma queda que levantou o brasileiro alto. Na última etapa, Diego voltou a quedar, pegou as costas e administrou bem. Merecida vitória por decisão unânime do americano, que se recuperou de duas derrotas seguidas.

Matt Hamill x Tito Ortiz

Matt Hamill foi melhor, mais efetivo na trocação e nas quedas. Nos três rounds, derrubou e trabalhou bem no ground and pound, com socos e cotoveladas. Tito tentava reagir, mas não conseguia acertar forte o oponente. Depois do gongo final, decisão unânime a favor de Hamill, que chega à quinta vitória seguida no UFC.

Gabriel Gonzaga x Brendan Schaub

Brendan Schaub se sentiu em casa na luta contra Gabriel Napão. Nos três rounds de combate, lutou em pé, na trocação de socos. Pôde usar bem o boxe e, no primeiro assalto, conseguiu derrubar o brasileiro em konckdown. Com boas combinações de socos, Brendan dominou o combate, evitou o Jiu-Jitsu do adversário, e faturou a decisão unânime dos jurados.

Aconteceu neste sábado, em Las Vegas, o UFC 114. Com a presença de astros como o jogador da NBA Tim Duncan, do pugilista Mike Tyson e do rapper Snoop Dogg, o ex-campeão Rashad Evans eliminou o desafeto Quinton Jackson na corrida pelo cinturão de meio-pesados. Os dois se estranham desde as gravações do reality show “The Ultimate Fighter”, mas Evans levou a melhor e poderá lutar pelo título. Em outras lutas aguardadas, Rogério Minotouro venceu a segunda no UFC e o inglês Michael Bisping se recuperou do revés para Wanderlei Silva. Mostrando a força da Inglaterra no MMA, John Hathaway não deu chances ao favorito Diego Sanchez.

Rashad Evans x Quinton “Rampage” Jackson

Nos primeiros 30 segundos, Rashad Evans já mostrou a que veio com um forte soco que abalou Quinton Jackson. Mas a luta, que começou quente, foi dar grandes emoções apenas round derradeiro. Rampage era controlado por Rashad, quando acertou uma boa sequência de socos e derrubou o oponente. Rashad conseguiu se recuperar e retribuiu com uma queda para depois trabalhar no ground and pound. A vitória por decisão unânime credencia o americano a encarar Maurício Shogun, pelo título de meio-pesados.  

Michael Bisping x Dan Miller

Numa luta sem grandes emoções, Michael Bisping controlou com tranqüilidade Dan Miller nos três rounds. O combate foi todo na trocação e o inglês conectou os melhores golpes. Ao final, Bisping se recuperou da derrota para Wanderlei Silva por decisão unânime.  

Todd Duffee x Mike Russow  

Protagonista do nocaute mais rápido na história do UFC (7 segundos), Todd Duffee provou um pouco do próprio remédio contra Mike Russow. Depois de quase definir no assalto inicial, Duffee passou a administrar o combate. Mas o gordinho Russow surpreendeu no terceiro round. Depois de um soco cruzado, viu Duffee cair nocauteado.   

Rogério Minotouro x Jason Brilz

Quem achava que Rogério Minotouro teria moleza na luta contra Jason Brilz se enganou. O baiano teve que suar para bater o oponente. Depois de um primeiro round parelho, em que Minotouro foi quedado, mas raspou e foi mais ofensivo na trocação,  Brilz apertou com tudo na guilhotina na segunda parcial. Minoto conseguiu se soltar, mas também sofreu duros golpes na trocação. No assalto final, acabou o gás do americano e o brasileiro trabalhou bem no chão com raspagens, por cima e num crucifixo, em que prendeu os braços do oponente com as pernas e soltou golpes no rosto. A decisão dividida  a favor de Minoto desagradou o público, que torcia para Brilz.

John Hathaway x Diego Sanchez

Invicto no MMA, John Hathaway passou bem pelo primeiro grande teste no UFC. Contra Diego Sanchez, que voltou a lutar no peso meio-médio, o inglês acertou uma joelhada de encontro no primeiro assalto e quase nocauteou no ground and pound. Nas etapas seguintes, Hathaway foi melhor na trocação e soube conter Sanchez nos minutos finais. Merecida vitória por decisão unânime.   

Lutas preliminares

Nos combates de abertura do UFC 114,  Ryan Jensen não deu bobeira e tratou de finalizar Jesse Forbes com uma guilhotina logo no primeiro round.  Luis Banha acabou perdendo a segunda seguida na organização, nocauteado por Cyrille Diabate. Já Melvin Guillard segue vencendo com uma joelhada que nocauteou Waylon Lowe no assalto inicial.
