February 12, in New Jersey, marks the opening of the heavily-anticipated Strikeforce heavyweight GP. Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Pezão, Andrei Arlovski, Sergei Kharitonov, Fabrício Werdum, Alistair Overeem, Josh Barnett, and Brett Rogers make up the roster for the tournament.

On the 12th, Fedor Emelianenko will face Pezão while Andrei Arlovski faces Sergei Kharitonov. At the next GP event, Fabrício Werdum will do battle with Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett will duke it out with Brett Rogers.

GRACIEMAG.com listened to the predictions of a number of GP specialists who have been around since the olden days of the Pride FC tournaments.

“The firm favorite is Fedor, he’s the man to beat. Yes, I believe lightning can strike twice in the same place and I have faith in the Brazilians. I would love to see a final between Werdum and Pezão, which would be excellent, but I still feel the Russian is favored to win,” says former BTT coach Bebeo Duarte.

“I’m rooting for Werdum, my money’s on him!” says Chute Boxe trainer Rudimar Fedrigo, who cornered beasts like Maurício Shogun and Wanderlei Silva in past Gps.

“I’m kind of biased, but I like Pezão (Antonio Silva) for this one. However, I can’t forget about Fedor and Barnett. It’ll be rough in there!” wagers Rodrigo Minotauro.

Alexandre Cacareco wreaking havoc on his opponents is no recent thing, whether at grappling tournaments, like the ADCC, or in MMA. However, the one thing missing was for the fighter to return to combat for a big promotion. Not anymore: Cacareco signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and makes his debut at UFC 122 in Germany on November 13.

“I think he’ll put on a great show, because he’s been waiting for this opportunity for a long time and now it’s come. He’ll debut in Germany, so there isn’t much more than a month to go, and against Vladimir Matyushenko. He’s a great opponent, but Cacareco will do well for sure. I’m going to help him as much as I can to be sure it happens,” says Rudimar Fedrigo, the master at Chute Boxe, to GRACIEMAG.com.

Now Cacareco is overjoyed with his shot in the UFC:

“I was even on the Sensei SporTV show (Brazilian television program) where I said I’d become unmotivated for going so long without appearing in a big event. Master Rudimar told me things were moving, but I never believed it would happen nor that the opportunity would be in the UFC. When he called me yesterday (Tuesday) and told me I was in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, I was overjoyed. I’m where every fighter wants to be!” he says in celebration.

“I just got kind of desperate, because there’s only a month till the fight and I was kind of off focus. But I have this time to get my body up to speed,” he adds.

For his opponent, Vladimir Matyushenko, Cacareco has nothing but respect.

“His heart and determination is unarguable. He’s a warrior who doesn’t duck a fight and he’s really tough. He’s fought in the UFC against top opponents. I’m coming in now so it’s hard to say things about those who are already there”

In the division I admire Shogun and Lyoto” Cacareco

In one of the most stacked division there is (light heavyweight), packed with stars, the fighter doesn’t hide who his favorites are.

“The two top fighters I admire most are Shogun and Lyoto. One is the champ and the other is the former champ. To me they’re the best,” says Cacareco in closing, asking the support of the fans.

“I’d like to ask that everyone cheers for me on November 13 and to thank Master Rudimar, who is the main reason these things are happening for me.”
The post Cacareco and master comment on impending UFC debut first appeared on Graciemag.

“A garra e determinação é indiscutível.

The post Mestrão e Cacareco comentam estreia no UFC first appeared on Graciemag.

Fighter, trainer, master, director, talisman, encourager, friend. First and foremost, Luiz Alves (1956-2010) was a winner.

Against all odds, he left his hometown of Nova Russas, in the grasslands of Ceara in 1968 to become a fixture among the skyscrapers of Tokyo, the hotels of Las Vegas and the kickboxing gyms of Holland, where he first went to train in 1995. With him he took a talented young fighter named Pedro Rizzo for polish.

Luiz leaps, in a rare scene where he sports a gi. Photo: Personal archive.

After arriving from Ceara, Luiz Alves started practicing judo in Rio de Janeiro, and went on to find fame in muay thai after winning titles in taekwondo. Owner of an open mind, discipline and kick respected mainly for his aim, Luiz taught class scolding his students (“You got it all wrong”), phrases he would swap for words of encouragement when he was in a fighter’s corner. Things like, “Believe! Take his head off!”

As a fighter, Alves would always believe. At a time when no one would train using pads, but shin on shin, he gained respect after knockouts like his win over the legendary Budi, a feared soccer hooligan. Alves beat Budi with a powerful kick to the abdomen, precisely where his adversary had been shot years earlier.

As a trainer, the grandmaster did not subscribe to rivalries or traditions, and in 1998 decided to teach muay thai to a Jiu-Jitsu black belt preparing for an MMA fight. The outcome? The debuting Andre Pederneiras knocked out Rumina Sato after an unforeseen kick, at Shooto Japan.

As president of the Muay Thai Confederation, working with kids for the future of the sport.

There was, however, a night when Luiz Alves could do nothing for his student. It was one of the coach from Ceara’s most enjoyable evenings. In November of 2003 in Japan, TV reporter Gloria Maria barged into the lobby of the hotel summoning everyone for breaking news to be shown on the Fantastico television program: a showdown between Wanderlei Silva and Rodrigo Minotauro, at a videogame arcade in Shinjuku. The next day, Wand would face Yoshida and Rampage, and Minotauro would fight Cro Cop.

His eyes glued to the videogame, Alves was one of those most excited. He advised Minotauro what to do, hollering throughout, but there was nothing he could do. The heavyweight was in dire straits, getting knocked out by the Chute Boxe star six times, to cackles from everyone present, especially Gloria Maria. “The Wand avatar is really strong, he only loses to Royce, who submits everyone in seconds,” said Rodrigo in resignation.

Guided by Minotauro, the Nogueira on the screen tries to escape the Wand's onslaught and close the distance, egged on by Alves. Photos: Marcelo Dunlop.

It was a sort of virtual revenge for Chute Boxe. Six years earlier in Sao Paulo, the Boxe Thai team Alves had founded in 1984 and Rudimar Fedrigo’s team had a memorable showdown. The two academies were born of the seeds left by Master Nelio Naja, one in Rio and the other in Curitiba, two teams that believed a fight, regardless of the will of those involved, would one way or another end on the ground. They differed only in their training philosophies.

“We always prized the combination of moves, while Chute Boxe would work the hands separate from the legs, etc…” said Artur Mariano, a student of Luiz’s since 10 years of age and a Jiu-Jitsu black belt, in an article in NOCAUTE magazine.

After 19 minutes of fighting, Artur Mariano overcame Wanderlei Silva by doctor’s intervention for a giant gash on the forehead, in the final of the IVC tournament.

A victim of brain hemorrhage this Friday, March 19, after a stroke suffered on January 26, Luiz Alves the winner returns to his hometown of Nova Russas for burial with his mission more than accomplished. He leaves a wife, his grown children and a legion of fans and followers.

Lutador, treinador, mestre, dirigente, talismã, incentivador, amigo.

Arranca a cabeça dele!”.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8bf2LHtqiY

“Fala, Bitoca! Me liga daqui a pouco, eu estou dando uma entrevista para a GRACIE”.

Que história é essa de “Bitoca”?! “Ah, é um amigo meu das antigas… A gente chama ele de Pit-Bitoca. O cara fica puto…

Experiência é a principal delas.

A entrevista acabou”.
The post Do baú: um Shogun quase famoso first appeared on Graciemag.

Photos: Gustavo Aragao

Everything suggested that Kazushi Sakuraba’s trip to Brazil to train at the academy of his age-old rival Wanderlei Silva was just a rumour without rhyme or reason. But the improbable happened. On August 19, 2005 the Japanese star arrived at Chute Boxe academy somewhat sheepish, greeting everyone with quick nods of the head, the sort of reverence and ceremony common in Japan. All it took, though, was a few weeks living with the chuteboxers for Sak to loosen up, conforming to more laid-back greetings (such as punching each others hands and pats on the back), and Sak the showboater shone through.

Fighter Marlon Mathias saw it all first hand. A rumor surfaced in Curitiba that Saku, with his faithful sidekick doubling as translator Wataru Takahashi, entered a newsstand in the capital of Parana and came face to face with one of those videos you have to be over 18 years of age to purchase. The two fell in love with some comely ladies on the cover of a porn DVD and, as they couldn’t read Portuguese, they couldn’t heed the warning printed on the cover: “She-men.”

Once recovered from the shock of seeing the beauties undressed on the TV screen, Sak and Takahashi decided to give a little present to a training partner. “Boy, that Sakuraba is a handful. After trying to deceive me, he now wants the DVD back to give to Takada,” said Mathias, referring to Nobuhiko Takada, not just the head of the gym where Sak and Takahashi train in Japan (Takada Dojo), but also one of most influential men in the Pride Fighting Championship organization.

Luck or setback?

Since the atmosphere was so relaxed, we decided to provoke Sakuraba a bit and ask about the cap the fighter gave Wanderlei Silva to wear into the ring at the Pride GP where he would face Ricardo Arona, on August 26. Since Wand lost the battle, wasn’t the cap a curse for the fighter from Curitiba?

“A curse? But Shogun won the GP… The cap was lucky, so much so that Chute Boxe won the tournament,” Sak retorted.

We also asked about the best and worst fights from Sakuraba’s career but he wouldn’t discuss it. We ran into the same dead end when we prodded him about his rivalry with the Gracie family. His willingness to answer our questions only returned when the topic came to retirement: “There’s no time limit to fighting, I’ve never contemplated quitting ,” said the ace of 37 years of age.

Limited vocabulary

What Sakuraba can say in Portuguese doesn’t go beyond expressions such as “Bora, time!” (“Let’s go, team!”), and the most recurrent one: “I’m tired.” Moreover, Sak has no doubt that training at Chute Boxe is much more challenging than those he usually goes through in the Land of the Rising Sun. “The other day he asked me how to spell ‘I’m not tired’. I think Sakuraba wants to make a shirt with these slogans to climb into the ring with in his next fight in Pride,” said a suspicious Rudimar Fedrigo, leader of Chute Boxe.

The idol’s performance during practice at CB resembles the theatrical style of a pro-wrestler, making a lot of faces and posturing, with flashy moves and funny screams. “He also likes to play dead to suddenly lunge,” says Master Rafael Cordeiro. ” Sakuraba is a trickster,” he says.

Sak said that it was at Chute Boxe that he did his first Jiu-Jitsu training session. “I lent him a symbolic black belt to take a picture with,” says Cristiano Marcello, who considers Sakuraba a black belt in MMA. It is likely readers agree with Marcello’s opinion, with all Saku’s first-rate exhibitions in Pride. If we count only his victims from Brazil, the Japanese fighter has beat in MMA: Nino Schembri, Ryan, Renzo, Royler and Royce Gracie, Ebenezer Braga, Vitor Belfort and Marcus “Conan” Silveira.

Marlboros and local beer

Sak’s accomplishments become even more impressive when the idol of Pride admits to consuming alcohol and smoking cigarettes. “Just a little, just a little,” justifies Sakuraba, using some of the few words he knows in English. In Portuguese “just a little” means “just a little”, but the guys from Chute Boxe insist it isn’t so…

” Sakuraba has already paid a bill of $ 2 thousand at a nightclub here in Curitiba,” says a chuteboxer who declined to be identified. “A draft beer at a party on the weekend I even tolerate, but if I catch him smoking I’ll grab Sakuraba by the neck,” promises Rafael Cordeiro.

A fan of barbecue and chicken soup, he often walks around with an ice compress on his famously bunk, his face completely recovered from the punishment he suffered at the hands of Ricardo Arona in the quarter-finals of the Pride GP (on June 26), Sak also says he is dying of longing for his family back in Japan

But when the intensive training session at Chute Boxe ends and the foreigner returns to his country, it’s likely the Brazilian team will miss the Japanese warrior. Each will have at least one funny story from the charismatic Japanese fighter as a souvenir, though.

Daniel Acacio, for example, already has his: “I’ll never forget the day I took Sakuraba to swim at a gym here in Curitiba. There he wore a swimsuit that in my definition is nothing but a hang-glider-shaped thong. The thing may well be common in Japan, but in Brazil it’s somewhat awkward. The staff at the club asked me to convince him to put briefs, but Sakuraba put his foot down and wouldn’t change the thong by any means. ” If the trend picks up …
