O gaúcho Gustavo Campos (Guetho/Atos) começou o domingo do Pan 2013, em Irvine, na Califa, como apenas um dos tantos astros inscritos no tradicional torneio da IBJJF. No fim da tarde, no entanto, ele terminou com um dos papéis principais.

Com sua guarda cheia de armadilhas, o faixa-preta meio-pesado e uma boa passagem de guarda, que eliminou o vice-campeão mundial Diogo Araújo (Soul Fighters), nas quartas, e Romulo Barral (Gracie Barra), na semifinal. Guto acabou cedendo o ouro ao fechar a final com o amigo André Galvão.

Ele conversou com GracieMag sobre suas duas últimas lutas, as mais acirradas e complicadas.

“Na faixa-preta na realidade não tem nenhuma luta fácil”, refletiu. “Às vezes parece fácil para quem está de fora, mas a gente sempre entra para finalizar. O oponente é que complica! Em minha primeira luta eu consegui finalizar. Na segunda, já lutei contra o Diogo Araújo, que foi vice no Mundial 2012, e só parou para o Barral na final. Ganhei nas vantagens, em luta que até cheguei do lado mas não consegui estabilizar. Encaixei um leglock no talo também, e ele não bateu. Daí até o final eu administrei na guarda 50/50”, comentou.

Sobre a final com Barral, Guto entrou disposto a guerrear.

“Eu já sabia que seria uma guerra, mas eu estava muito bem treinado. O treino no camp da Atos havia sido intenso, o que me deixou muito confiante para lutar contra qualquer um. Sempre luto para frente, luto para buscar as posições dominantes e para pegar. Quando se luta assim acho que a vitória acaba sendo consequência”, lembrou.

“Como o Rominho é um cara que luta para a frente também, sempre perigoso por cima ou por baixo, eu não fiz muita tática, o negócio era ir para a guerra mesmo. Aproveitei que estava com a pegada em dia e investi na velocidade. Eu me senti ainda mais rápido, porque estava cinco quilos abaixo do limite da categoria. Eu não quis fazer dieta para lutar no médio, sabe? Então imprimi meu ritmo por baixo e por cima e consegui chegar em boas posições, para pontuar e até para finalizar, como num bote que dei no braço”, concluiu.

The final will between winners of the Rio de Janeiro and Gramado qualifiers Gilberto Durinho and Claudio Caloquinha, respectively. In the semifinal, Durinho had a tough match against Celsinho Venicius, the same opponent he faced in the tryout final in Rio. At the end of the match, with a few seconds remaining, he managed to make it to the back, similar to what happened the last time the two met.

Under 83 kg (183 lbs)

Bráulio Estima will have his work cut out for him in the fourth finalist from Atos in the event, Claudio Calasans. While Bráulio beat Guto Campos in the semifinal, Calasans overcame Delson Pe de Chumbo.

Under 92 kg (205 lbs)

Rômulo Barral had faith in his potential and hopped a flight to Abu Dhabi. The guard master’s game panned out and he is through to the final with Alexandro Ceconi.

Over 92 kg

Yet another promising final, featuring Ricardo Demente versus Gabriel Vella. While Vella, who won last weekend’s Pan-American, overcame burly brown belt Marcus Bochecha in the semifinal, with a mount, Demente had a hard task to handle: he swept Luiz “Big Mac”.
