The blue belt males opened up the first day of the 2013 No-Gi World Championship on Saturday, Nov. 2 as they do at most tournaments. With ten mats spread throughout the Long Beach Walter Pyramid, main stage the matches unfolded with new divisions added into the mix often. The brackets circulated giving athletes a break in between each match and time for many different shapes, ages and sizes to take on their opponents at the same time.

The blue belt males were as followed:

The open class divisions were fought at the end of the day with the athletes giving everything they have left from the long hours of matches. For the blue belts, Caio Terra’s lightweight student Benjamin Silva won the open weight gold to match the gold he earned in his division. A total of nine matches for him, six of them ended in submissions. Since moving to Caio’s gym and being persuaded to move down to the lightweight division from middleweight, his tournament results have skyrocketed. His training partners have become family at GMA Institute of Martial Arts and the advice Caio has given him paid off: “Stick with plan A and don’t worry about plan B until it happens. Go out there and play your game, don’t worry about names and what they’re doing.” The blue belt female division was won by Tara White who trains under GMA member Andre Galvao. She fought Virginia Perez from Cyborg’s GMA Fight Sports.

The open class for the male purple belts lasted the longest with many names in the bracket who could have topped the podium. Narrowing down to the last matches, both small and large competitors were still working towards the goal. In the final, Isaque Bahiense faced Gerard Dany that was decided by points. From the start of the match, Gerard’s large frame was in control of Isaque, nearly taking his back. Isaque defended the second hook avoiding the hooks and was able to escape the dangerous position but was put in the same situation once more. After turning to put his back on the back and end up in bottom half-guard, a good bridge gave him the momentum to come on top, sweeping to earn two points in the last twenty seconds and winning the division. The purple belt females came down to their final with matches that ended in mostly submissions by the eventual winner. Amanda Santana from Marcio Cruz BJJ submitted her way to the gold with an armbar submission in the final to end her day with double gold.

O primeiro dia do Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu de 2013 chegou ao fim após uma longa jornada de chaves de faixas brancas e azuis. Os números do esporte tem subido, e, para ganhar o título numa destas categorias – algumas com mais de cem lutadores –, você precisa estar em forma.  Os vitoriosos de quinta-feira na Pirâmide Walter em Long Beach sabiam muito bem disso, e vieram preparados para enfrentar uma sequência de até sete oponentes rumo ao ouro.

Entre os plumas azuis, o brasileiro Hiago Gama Sousa venceu a divisão e fez história como campeão do grand slam em 2013. Isto é, ele ganhou os quatro principais eventos do ano: Europeu, Pan-americano, Brasileiro e agora o Mudial. Com ajuda de seu time da Alliance e os ensinamentos de Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva, ele foi finalizando sem parar, até se ver no topo do pódio. E, claro, tendo feito a melhor campanha possível para um faixa-azul, ele recebeu a roxa.

O Jiu-Jitsu é um esporte individual, mas desta vez não pareceu. Foi como se todos os integrantes da Alliance e da Soul Fighters tivessem pisado juntos no tatame para a luta entre Egidio Ribeiro Lima Neto

(Alliance) e Hugo Doerzapff Marques (Soul Fighters), tamanho o alvoroço nas arquibancadas. O combate foi uma constante troca de raspagens, deixando o placar quase igual, até que, no último minuto, Egidio se arriscou, subiu para uma raspagem, saiu da posição de 50/50 em que estavam há um tempo, e pulou para as costas de Hugo. Ao fim do tempo regulamentar, o árbitro havia dado a Hugo os pontos pela raspagem e uma vantagem, mas, antes de declarar o campeão, o árbitro adicionou os pontos de raspagem e uma vantagem também à contagem de Egidio, deixando tudo empatado. Hugo Marques foi, então, declarado campeão pelos juízes.

Rolando Samson foi outro promovido à faixa roxa nesta quinta. Depois de sete lutas e quatro finalizações – sendo uma na final, em apenas 14 segundos –, ele cumpriu sua meta. Ano passado, ele não pôde participar do Mundial porque estava pegando seu diploma no ensino médio. Este ano, ele treinou muito sob a tutela de André Galvão na Atos, em San Diego, sem deixar de ir à faculdade. Sua primeira luta foi contra Zach Neminsky, da Mendes Bros. Sobre o combate, Rolando disse:

“Ano passado, lutamos no Mundial sem kimono, mas ainda não éramos tão amigos como agora. Fiquei chateado ao descobrir que lutaríamos de novo hoje, mas, tendo perdido dele antes, minha vontade de vencer era grande. Mas, mesmo sendo amigos, nós sempre tentamos matar um ao outro nos treinos”.
