Samir usually competes in the open to “see what it feels like.” After getting a taste of victory, his perspective on the absolute has changed. “I want to do it more to win now, rather than to just see how it feels,” he says, “I will definitely continue to fight the open in the future.”

Samir wasn’t even going to compete in the absolute today because he’d already competed in his weight class and he was refereeing at the event, but Caio asked him if he would, so he agreed. “Caio said he couldn’t handle three or four matches because he’s injured and hasn’t been training, and he didn’t want to get hurt worse today,” he says, “He asked me to make it to the final so we could close out the bracket. I did my best and I put everything I had out there to do this, and we made it.”

In the absolute Samir had two matches and went through to the final. In his first he swept his opponent and landed in full mount for six points. Then his opponent felt his ankle pop and pulled out of the contest.

Samir was pit against Kron Gracie student Rodrigo Teixeira for his second match, and he knew he was in for a battle. “I’ve seen him compete before,” Samir says, “He’s a very good and very tough competitor. He’s very strong.” Samir was able to sweep Rodrigo twice to beat him 4-0.

Then he and Caio met up in the final to close out the bracket, just as they had planned. “It’s my first open class win and it feels great,” Samir says, “Especially closing out with my teammate. It makes it even better.”

In the featherweight division Samir closed out the bracket with another Gracie Fighter teammate of his, Osvaldo Moizinho, with Samir taking his first gold of the day. They did take to the mats to roll during their final but it was more of a “flow drill”, with each of them racking up 16 points apiece on each other.

In all he had two matches in his division, winning the first via foot lock in the first four minutes of the first match, before meeting up with Osvaldo in the final. “I hope Osvaldo and I do the same thing at the Nationals,” Samir says, “I’m defending my title and I want to close out with him again there.”

Samir says his experience at the Las Vegas International Open was truly great. “I’ve had a pretty successful 2011,” he says, “I had a serious knee injury that took me out of the Pan, but I competed at the Worlds and I came in third. I had really good matches, though. I’m still a kid and have only been a black belt for two years. I’m happy about my performances.”

Samir’s teammate Caio Terra was excited for his friend’s accomplishments and the strength of their Gracie Fighter team. “I want to thank all my teammates and friends for believing in me,” he says, “If you’re ever in San Jose, Dublin, or Pleasant Hill, California, come find us at the Gracie Fighter gyms.”

As for the Las Vegas International Open and passing the torch to Samir, Caio says, “I have a lot of respect for everybody who came here to compete.”

Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa (Soul Fighters) is another black belt star confirmed to participate at the next US Open, on the 15^th-17^th of October in Santa Cruz, California.

Lightweight bronze medalist at the 2009 Worlds, Formiga also had a good run at the Las Vegas Open, taking silver after a back-and-forth match with Rodrigo Teixeira.

Além de Formiga, quem também se inscreveu esta semana foi a faixa-marrom Angela Sauermann (Pitbull Jiu-Jitsu), mais uma favorita para o ouro.

Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa (Soul Fighters) é mais um astro da faixa-preta confirmado para o próximo US Open, torneio a ser realizado nos dias 15, 16 e 17 de outubro em Santa Cruz, Califórnia.

Medalhista de bronze no Mundial 2009, o peso leve competiu bem no último Las Vegas Open, ficando com a medalha de prata após luta empolgante contra Rodrigo Teixeira.

Além de Formiga, quem também se inscreveu esta semana foi a faixa-marrom Angela Sauermann (Pitbull Jiu-Jitsu), mais uma favorita para o ouro.

Las Vegas sediou um evento de grandes destaques no último sábado, no Las Vegas Sports Center, no estado de Nevada.

Com o Las Vegas Open ocorrendo juntamente com o Nacional Sem Kimono americano, alguns atletas optaram por se testar tanto de kimono como sem kimono, fazendo as medalhas pesarem no peito.

Caio Terra, como você leu em primeira mão aqui no GRACIEMAG.com, faturou o absoluto do Las Vegas Open e, sem o paletó, quase foi à final do Nacional Sem Kimono, levando o bronze para casa.

O absoluto sem kimono ficou com Gregor Gracie, que também fechou o peso com o irmão Igor. Rolles Gracie, no pesadíssimo, foi outro irmão a levar a medalha de ouro de volta para Nova Jersey, para mostrar para os alunos da academia Renzo Gracie Holmdel. “Viemos trazer os alunos e decidimos competir em cima da hora”, lembrou Rolles a nossa repórter Deb Blyth.

Outro que voltou com duas medalhas para casa foi Rodrigo Teixeira, campeão do Las Vegas Open no peso médio em cima de Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa, e vice sem kimono. “Meu Jiu-Jitsu não foi o que eu esperava, eu não estava 100% tecnicamente”, disse Teixeira, que andou treinando mês passado com Kron Gracie.

Um dos maiores destaques do sábado foi Flavio Almeida, o popular Cachorrinho. O professor da Gracie Barra em San Clemente, clássico balneário da Califa, venceu no peso pesado com e sem o kimono, e com um bônus: no Las Vegas Open, finalizou pelas costas o americano Rafael Lovato Jr, campeão mundial em 2007.

“Eu tinha uma dificuldade de finalizar pelas costas, na hora de dominar o adversário. Até que meu irmão (Ricardo Cachorrão) me ensinou a dominar o tronco do oponente com o triângulo pelas costas. Com isso pude relaxar minhas pegadas e usar minhas mãos apenas para o estrangulamento. Deu certo na final”, contou Cachorrinho, que comentou o resultado com Deb Blyth.

“Eu vim para vencer, claro, mas quando a gente luta contra caras realmente duros – e Lovato está no top ten da categoria – o esperado é vencer por pontos ou vantagens. O Lovato cometeu um erro e tive sorte de conseguir capitalizar em cima disso”, lembrou, referindo-se ao momento em que abriu a guarda, chegou do lado e acabou nas costas.

O principal destaque na competição entre os pretas foi Jonathan Torres. JT, representante da Lloyd Irvin, foi campeão no peso leve e no absoluto. Mas também brilharam na chamada capital do mundo Daniel Beleza, campeão no pluma; Marcelino de Freitas, primeiro colocado no pena; Rodrigo Teixeira, ouro no médio; Leonardo Ferreira, o primeiro no pesado, e Bruno Bastos, que foi o melhor no pesadíssimo, entre muitos outros.

Já na contagem por academias, melhor para a Renzo Gracie, seguida por Lloyd Irvin, em segundo, e Lotus Club em terceiro.
