Para sentir como o professor Rodrigo “Feijão” é uma parada dura, basta perceber dois indícios: primeiro, a qualidade técnica de seus alunos; segundo, que Leon Mendonça, campeão mundial absoluto faixa-roxa, ainda não ganhou a marrom de seu mestrão.

Uma das grandes revelações da Nova União nos últimos anos, Leon se consagrou no Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu 2022, em junho, na Pirâmide, em Long Beach. E o fez em grande estilo: a fera mordeu o ouro duplo ao triunfar no superpesado e absoluto sem sequer sofrer um ponto.

Na final do peso aberto, Leon mediu forças com José Steve Nduazulu. O atleta da Nova União teve desempenho dominante e finalizou o adversário com um mata-leão, quando já o vencia por 4 a 0.

“Sempre foi meu sonho ser campeão mundial peso e absoluto”, comentou Leon com o GRACIEMAG.com. “Estava sem acreditar que meu sonho de criança tinha se tornado realidade, porque eu sonhei muito com esse momento. Foi uma sensação inexplicável”.

Antes do absoluto, o jovem craque passou a guarda de Telmo Lucileno e marcou 3 a 0 para garantir o título no superpesado.

“Foi incrível, pois acertei tudo que treinei e não sofri nenhum ponto. Sei que tenho aspectos e posições em que ainda preciso melhorar e evoluir, com meu professor Rodrigo Feijão. Estamos trabalhando juntos há três anos e ele é fundamental na minha trajetória. O Feijão está do meu lado em todas as lutas, ele é um cara diferente. Ele me abraçou, disse que ia dar certo e eu precisava confiar que era meu dia. E ele estava certo.”

Para Leon, seus pontos mais fortes hoje são a agilidade e explosão. E o incentivo que vem de casa:

“Minha família, minha namorada e meus avós são meu maior combustível. Tenho o sonho de poder dar uma vida melhor a eles através do Jiu-Jitsu. Este ano volto a lutar em novembro, para a disputa do World Pro em Abu Dhabi. Espero que continue dando tudo certo.”

With athletes from Hawaii, Brazil, the Middle East and several Pacific locations, the IBJJF’s Asian BJJ Championship was held last weekend in Tokyo, Japan.

The absolute black belt champion was a Brazilian national residing in Australia, Nova União representative William Dias. At the age of 22, the Rodrigo Feijão pupil dazzled at the Tokyo Budoh-Kan gymnasium.

Young William, who is also a capoeira professor, bagged the middleweight category as well. His absolute victory came in a final against Vicente Gomes Cavalcanti (Southside MMA). Japan’s Akira Hosokawa (Alive) and Tatsuya Kaneko (Paraestra) made up the rest of the podium.

Nova Uniao’s Christian Broadnax began his endeavor to Brazil three months ago with hopes of learning, competing and developing as an athlete and a person. The brown belt under GMA member Gustavo Dantas left his home in Arizona to rid himself of his comfort zone and put his trust in Rodrigo Feijao to help him mature.

Results have shown as Christian topped the podium of the 2013 IBJJF South Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship, the 7th Maringa Open and most recently the 2013 IBJJF Floripa Open where he also placed third in the open class. He also competed in the 1st Copa Elite de Jiu-Jitsu where he finished first in the brown belt absolute earning 800,00 reais equivalent to about $350.

Before he returns home soon, he will compete in the Brazilian Nationals by Teams competition for Nova Uniao.

Americans travel to Brazil often to gather knowledge from legends who are deeply rooted within the art of Jiu-Jitsu. One competitor, Nova Uniao brown belt Christian Broadnax, set up a way to train and learn from Nova Uniao professor Rodrigo Feijao in Maringa, Parana. “This will be a great life experience for Christian, who is only 19 years old,” says Gustavo Dantas, the leader of Nova Uniao Arizona. “He will be competing at the South America, Rio Open, Sao Paulo Open and the Brazilian National by teams.”

On his way to Brazil, Christian Broadnax took time to talk with us about his journey and how he feels it will benefit him:

GRACIEMAG: You’ll be training with Rodrigo Feijao who is known for turning good competitors into great competitors. What are you hoping to have him help you with while you’re with him?

CHRISTIAN BROADNAX: Well I want him to help me with patience and maintaining positions. This is something Gustavo [Dantas] has been helping me with for a while and I have somewhat improved upon, but I feel sometimes I get too antsy during my matches. The last tournament (The Arizona State BJJ Championship) I competed at I slipped up and got caught in a triangle in the finals of my division. Luckily there was only 30 sec left in the match and I held my composure and won (I was up by 7pts). I got antsy because I wanted to make the match exciting and pass the guy’s guard and submit him. I know Feijao will help me with more than patience though when I train with him. I still have a lot to improve on in my game.

What happened at Worlds this year?

I won my first match 4 – 0 and I got DQ’ed in the second match. I was winning the match and I went for a knee bar on my opponent and he escaped. When he escaped he turned his body in a way where it seemed as if I was reaping the knee. The ref stopped the match and I got DQ’ed. I was very disappointed I trained really hard and sacrificed a lot, but it’s a part of the game. I have to look forward to the future and train harder.

As a 19-year-old, you’re ahead of the game. A two-year degree, a BJJ brown belt around your waist and titles galore. What advice can you offer to kids and teenagers looking to follow similar footsteps?

My advice is to always follow your dreams, keep an open mind, always believe in yourself and have a positive mindset. Also you should always keep positive people around you and surround yourself with people that have the same goals as you do. This will create better productivity and more motivation for attaining ones goals. I’ve been training since I was 11 yrs old and I told myself that the first time I go compete worlds I will win first place. Many people have discouraged me and told me that I wouldn’t be able to even win when I first compete at worlds but in 2009 I won the juvenile division for blue belts when I was 15.

Do you think heading to Brazil on your own and living there for three months will help you mature even further? What kind of qualities do you think you’ll gain while there that will better yourself as a person?

I think the experience I will get from this will be very beneficial for me as a person. Lately I’ve been through a lot of bad personal situations and my coach Gustavo and I know that I need this. I know I will learn to relax more (laughs). I know that I will be more confident in myself and my abilities. I’m sure that I will have a different perspective on many things not only in Jiu-Jitsu but also in life. I love Jiu-Jitsu and without it, I’m not sure where I would be. I’m blessed to have this opportunity. I just would like to thank my coach Gustavo Dantas for believing in me. He has been with me through all my up and down times and he’s always helped if I need anything. He means a lot to me and my plan is to become the best I can for not only myself but for him and my team.

The latest issue of GRACIEMAG is especially savory for Jiu-Jitsu practitioners aiming to evolve.

One of the highlights is a tribute to one of the greatest mat aces of all times, and the ones who benefit are our readers. Fernando Tererê (Alliance), now living in England, was picked to head the Training Program section, where he shares some of the techniques that marked his career.

One of them is of course the hook sweep that brought gymnasiums to their feet all across Brazil during the last two decades.

Starting kneeling or playing guard, with hooks in place, Tererê caught everyone by surprise with his use of basic leverage.

He’d position one foot between his opponents’ legs and the otherbehind their thigh. From there, Tererê would use the hook he was using for support as leverage for the sweep. With the hand on the same side as the hook, the black belt would sink a deadly grip either on the belt or the leg, depending on the situation. He would thus use his own leg to hoist his opponent up into the air and tip him over.

A edição de janeiro de GRACIEMAG está especialmente saborosa para o praticante de Jiu-Jitsu que mira sua evolução.

Num dos carros-chefes da revista deste mês, a publicação faz uma homenagem a um mito dos tatames, e quem ganha com isso é o leitor. Fernando Tererê (Alliance), hoje morando na Inglaterra, foi o escolhido para a seção Plano de Aula, onde compartilha com você as técnicas que mais marcaram sua carreira.

Uma delas, claro, é a raspagem de gancho que levantou ginásios por todo o Brasil nas duas décadas passadas.

Começando ajoelhado ou já fazendo guarda, com os ganchos enfiados, Tererê surpreendia a todos com uma alavanca simples.

Posicionava um dos pés entre as pernas do oponente, e por trás da coxa inimiga. Dali, Tererê firmava o gancho que servia como ponto de apoio para a alavanca da raspagem. Com uma das mãos, a do mesmo lado da perna / gancho, o faixa-preta fazia uma pegada mortal, que podia ser na faixa ou na perna que voa, dependendo da situação. Tererê elevava então sua própria perna e tombava o rival para o lado.

Daniel “Neguinho” Garcia (Nova União) was flying under the radar in the middleweight division for the 2011 Worlds, but then he blipped up out of the blue – and dropping bombs.

It came down to his stellar performance at the Brazilian Nationals this past May, when he won a division stacked with the likes of Alan “Finfou” do Nascimento, Augusto “Tio Chico” Vieira, and other seasoned competitors.

The Nova União middleweight had faith in himself and came up spades. His first match saw him pass guard and finish with a choke. He went on to win his second while Alan Finfou ended up getting injured and was unable to make the semifinal, so all that was left to do was head straight into the final against Tio Chico – one of the finest gentle art displays witnessed that weekend of May 14 and 15 in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.

Daniel recounts how it went:

“The strategy that played out in the final was to score and take the lead, to keep him down as long as possible. In the final minute I exploded again, did a reversal I always practice in the academy, and it worked out: I landed on top and won, 4-2,” recalls Garcia, who teaches in the USA.

“The problem is that I had to make some changes for the Worlds. A lot of folks have started to taking notice of my game, so my teacher Rodrigo Feijão decided to switch some things up as a precaution,” said the black belt of one and a half years, providing no further clues.

Daniel “Neguinho” Garcia (Nova União) não estava no radar para o peso médio do Mundial 2011, mas apareceu na tela com tudo, e já bombardeando.

Isso ocorreu graças ao excelente Brasileiro que fez no Tijuca, em maio, quando venceu uma categoria que tinha Alan “Finfou” do Nascimento, Augusto “Tio Chico” Vieira e outras feras mais experientes.

O peso médio da Nova União acreditou em si e se deu bem. Em sua primeira luta, passou a guarda e finalizou no pescoço. Venceu a segunda e, na semifinal, Alan Finfou se contundiu e não pôde entrar para lutar. Restou a final contra Tio Chico – uma das melhores lutas vistas no Tijuca no fim de semana do dia 14 e 15 de maio.

Daniel é quem conta:

“Na final, rolou uma estratégia de pontuar e sair na frente, para conseguir segurar o máximo por baixo. No minuto final, explodi outra vez, usei uma inversão que sempre treino na academia e me dei bem: fiquei por cima e venci, 4 a 2”, relembra ele, que dá aulas nos EUA.

“O problema é que para o Mundial tive de fazer algumas mudanças. Muitas pessoas começaram a ficar de olho no meu jogo, e meu professor Rodrigo Feijão preferiu fazer algumas mudanças por precaução”, despista Daniel, faixa-preta há um ano e meio.

Terminou o Camp da Nova União para o Mundial 2010, que tem início no dia 3 de junho, na Califórnia. As atividades aconteceram em Dallas, Texas. Foram duas semanas de treinamento com a participação de feras como Robson Moura, Rodrigo Feijão, Marcelino Freitas e Bruno Bastos.

Marcelino ainda passou os últimos dias de treino na NU do Arizona, com Gustavo Dantas, tendo a companhia nos treinos da promessa Steven Rosemberg, que vem com tudo para tentar atrapalhar a vida dos favoritos no peso leve junto com outra promessa, Chris Westfall.

A equipe ainda vem forte em outros pesos, como no galo, com o sempre competitivo Bernardo Pitel e a volta do campeão mundial de 1998 Marcelo Pereira. No pena, o já citado Marcelino quer estragar os planos dos favoritos Rubens Charles Cobrinha e Rafael Mendes.

No médio a equipe aposta no novato Daniel Garcia e no meio-pesado vem com Diogo Almeida e Roberto Nery. Já no superpesado o tarimbado Bruno Bastos e a estrela em ascensão Ricardo Demente finalizam a lista da equipe na faixa-preta. A dupla promete muito trabalho a Roger Gracie e Xande Ribeiro para atrapalhar o sonho do tricampeonato absoluto.

Rodrigo Feijão, que puxou os treinamentos em Dallas, comenta as expectativas.

“As expectativas são as melhores possíveis e vamos em busca de medalhas em todas as faixas. Ainda não temos como ganhar o campeonato, mas acredito que ano que vem já teremos condições para isso. Algumas revelações estão surgindo e mais atletas do Brasil virão ano que vem também.”

Parte do time da Nova União já está reunida nos Estados Unidos, onde se prepara para o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu. Nesta primeira semana do camp, os treinamentos foram em Dallas, na Octagon MMA, onde Bruno Bastos dá aulas. 

“Estou quebrado. Já estão aqui o Marcelino Freitas, o Rodrigo Feijão e o Daniel Garcia. Também treinamos na academia do Travis Lutter, que conta com uma galera muito dura para este Mundial, e tem a galera do Gustavo Dantas, que está dura para o campeonato”, conta Bruno Bastos. 

A Nova União faz uma reestruturação no Jiu-Jitsu e os primeiros resultados começam a aparecer. No Campeonato Brasileiro deste ano, o time ficou em terceiro lugar.  

“Fomos muito bem no primeiro final de semana do Brasileiro e, no segundo, como não estávamos com muitos faixas-pretas, ficou difícil acompanhar. Mesmo assim ficamos em terceiro. Nesse Mundial temos a meta de conseguir pelo menos 10 medalhas em todas as faixas. Ainda não dá para ganharmos, mas a ideia é, no próximo ano, entrarmos com uma equipe bem maior. Faremos agora camps para todos os eventos grandes e continuamos nos organizando. Vamos crescer”, comenta Rodrigo Feijão, um dos comandantes nessa reformulação.

Entre as principais apostas da NU neste Mundial estão a dupla de gêmeos Broadnax, entre eles Christian, campeão peso e absoluto do Pan na faixa-azul juvenil. Agora a dupla estreia no adulto. Também não podem ser esquecidos Steven Rosenberg, terceiro no último Mundial no leve marrom, mas que lutará entre os pretas agora, a nova pedreira na faixa-preta Daniel Garcia, e os conhecidos do time Ricardo Demente, Bruno Bastos e Marcelino Freitas.  

“Os treinos estão muito bons. Começamos no último domingo e tem muito treino duro. O Bruno vai chegar muito bem e eu também”, avisa Marcelino, que terá uma dura missão no peso pena.

No ano em que completa 15 anos de existência, a Nova União se prepara com força para o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, que acontece na Califórnia de 3 a 6 de junho. Para isso, o time prepara um super camp nos Estados Unidos. 

“Faremos um camp em Dallas, que começa no dia 18 de maio e contará com a presença de vários professores e atletas de todo o mundo”, conta Bruno Bastos, uma das feras do time, que também vai estar em ação na Califórnia. 

Já confirmaram presença para os treinamentos, além de Bastos, Robson Moura, Rodrigo Feijão e Marcelino Freitas, entre muitos outros graduados da equipe.
