Em vídeo gravado em 2013, após Roberto Cyborg conquistar o título absoluto do ADCC, o faixa-preta pantaneiro explicou para a equipe de GRACIEMAG alguns de seus segredos com e sem kimono.

Em uma dessas aulas, o professor ensinou passo a passo sua raspagem favorita, partindo da famigerada guarda-tornado. Depois que o adversário chega na meia-guarda, Cyborg faz pegadas para manter o oponente afastado, coloca na guarda-laçada e busca a boca da calça, para em seguida inverter o quadril e trazer o adversário, quase sem peso, e projetar para cima, subindo para garantir os dois pontos.

Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu was the big winner of the Miami Open, which took place last weekend at the  Florida International University Arena, in Miami. The ultra-heavyweight won four gold medals in gi and no-gi. His best fight was against heavyweight champion DJ Jackson in the absolute gi final.

João Miyao also had a good weekend, as he beat Lucas Pinheiro for the light featherweight gi title and also won featherweight no-gi gold.

One Championship athlete Herbert Burns was also present and walked out with the lightweight no-gi title.

The World Jiu-Jitsu Expo confirmed another free seminar for this year’s edition.

The 2013 ADCC open class champion, Roberto Cyborg, will be at the Long Beach Convention Center on October 19 for a free class.

The exact time of Cyborg’s seminar will be released shortly with the full schedule for the WPJJC.

Other than Cyborg, the Expo will also feature a Mendes Bros seminar on October 18.

Marcus Buchecha will be also teaching a free seminar.

Three IBJJF events will take place during the Expo: IBJJF Pro League, the American Nationals Kids and the Long Beach Open.

Three superfights are also already confirmed – Gianni Grippo vs. Augusto Tanquinho, Nino Schembri vs. Vitor Shaolin, Robson Moura vs. Marcos Parrumpinha.

Cyborg is the Miami Open absolute champion

Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu is the owner of the open class in Miami.

For the third year in a row, the leader of GMA team Fight Sports/Cyborg BJJ  has won the absolute of the Miami Open IBJJF Championship, this Saturday.

With no adversary in the ultra-heavyweight division, Cyborg saved his strength for the open class.

In the final match, he faced Leonardo D’avilla.

Roberto talked about his achievement (and his students’) on Facebook: “I was so proud to see our students fighting today. It’s the craziest feeling in the world. From white to black belt, we have made many champions today, but beyond that, winning or losing, it was awesome how everyone stood together and had fun on the mats like a family! I even got to be The Miami Open Absolute Champion. What a great day!! Now, many mistakes to be corrected and lots of training to be done….Tomorrow, regular training at FS!”

Also in the adult black belt division, the champions were: Daniel Beleza (light-feather), Gustavo Carpio (feather), Denis Pinto (light), Vitor Oliveira (middle), Ricardo Rezende (medium-heavy), Pedro Santos (Gracie Elite), Todd Culler (super-heavy), Roberto Abreu (ultra-heavy).

At the team competition, Alliance came out on top (224pts), Gracie Elite finished second (192pts) and The Avengers completed the podium in third (191pts).

Bruno Malfacine, who led the eagle team in Florida, also wrote about it on Facebook: “I’m so happy and proud of all Alliance warriors who came here today and gave their best! Thank you everyone, all the athletes, all Instructors and Master Romero Jacaré for the opportunity.”

The black belt beat Rolles by 9 to 2 and also witnessed teammate Pablo Popovitch’s triumph. Pablo was supposed to have faced Gregor Gracie, who pulled out injured and made way for Alliance’s stalwart competitor Lucas Lepri. Further proof of his no-gi skills, ADCC champion Popovitch beat Lepri by 2 to 0, which readers already found out here on GRACIEMAG.com.

At the Copa America, in Lakeland, Florida, Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu (fightsportssbeach.com) closed out both the Gi and No-Gi absolute black belt divisions with his friend Vagner “Ceara” Rocha.

“Blue belts Yasmine Wilson and Drazen Macan competed at The Grapplers Showdown No Gi Summer Slam in London, this last Saturday. Yasmine won by submission in all her fights to get the gold in the womens absolute tournament and Macan submitted three guys on the way to the final and ended up taking the silver.”

The ADCC committee watches Rafael Mendes against Raoni Barcelos, in the final of the Rio tryouts.

Six months after ADCC 2009 in Barcelona, the international committee for the event contacted ADCC Brazil general secretary Wagner Gomes to inform him that Rafael Mendes (Atos), winner of the under 66kg division, won the reward for quickest submission, for his match against the USA’s Justin Rader, as published on the www.adcc.cc website. With the news, Rafael becomes another 1,400 dollars richer.

“I got an email from the committee informing me they were unable to get in touch with Rafael, to let him know about the prize, and I contacted the athlete, who sent his account information to the organizers and will receive the reward,” remarked Wagner to GRACIEMAG.com.

Lepri tosses Cyborg in the highlight of Pride Long Island.

Moments before the final match, Roberto Cyborg revealed his strategy, “I don’t think he’ll want to fight standing, so I’m going to pull guard first. But since a fight is a fight, we’ll only know once we get our hands on each other’s gis. He’s really tough, lost by just one advantage point to [ADCC 2009 champion] Pablo [Popovitch]. And Pablo’s the toughest guy I’ve ever seen.”

Cyborg (Fight Sports South Beach) was referring to Alliance teacher in New York Lucas Lepri, who had won two frenetic matches to make it to the final, in the semifinal undergoing a bout of sweeps and attacks with Guybson Sá (East West Combat Club), who ended up getting submitted by Lepri with a choke from the half guard a few seconds from the end of a bout Lepri already led by 10 to 8.

ADCC under 99kg runner-up Roberto Cyborg made it to the final with two lighting quick submissions. His victim in the semifinal was the tough-as-nails silver medalist at the European Championship Renan Borges (BTT Boston), who was unable to overcome the weight difference of nearly 30 kgs (66 lbs). Cyborg finished him from the back and immediately, with only one arm, hoisted Renan up onto his shoulder, to the delight of the crowd in attendance at Queens College this Sunday, March 7, in New York, watching the latest installment of Milton Regis and Eloi Santos’ Long Island Pride.

In the decider, Cyborg fulfilled his promise of pulling guard, and the tactic started out well, as he was the one to score the opening two points with a sweep. But Lepri wasn’t intimidated. He insisted on throwing Cyborg off balance even after his initial attempts hit the dead end of his opponent’s solid base. As the match played out, the plan proved effective, since Lepri managed to tie the score, and then take a 6 to 2 lead, even landing a sightly overhead sweep followed by an arm attack, and a choke attempt from the back. All of which Cyborg defended.

In the end, Lepri took the win, driving his students who went to see him into delirium. And his partner, another Alliance professor, Fabio Clemente, who shouted, “You did it, Lucão!”

“Was it the best match of your career?” the reporter asked.

“No. My best match was against Lucas Leite [in the semifinal of the No-Gi Worlds 2008]. But this one was really good, too,” he said in celebration. And added, “And you can call it an excellent ‘warm-up’ for the Pan, can’t you?”
