Young Nivaldo Oliveira (CheckMat) is one of the best Jiu-Jitsu competitors in Brazil today, and even so he doesn’t have a single big sponsor. Two indicators that companies are missing a grand opportunity with him:

1) Nivaldo won the heavyweight division at the Rio Open, a division where absolute runner-up Igor Silva, who has been on a tear, only managed to get bronze.

2) Nivaldo made it to the final with his teammate Robert Fonseca, who had eliminated Igor Silva. And the two didn’t just leave it at that; rather than simply “close out”, they treated the public to a Jiu-Jitsu spectacle.

Nivaldo further elaborates:

“So I had three matches. The first I won by armbar, after sinking a triangle, and in the second I made it past Nova União’s Nilson Ricardo. We drew 3-3 on advantage points,” he begins.

“The final was against my teammate Robert, and it was even harder because I’m not really a heavyweight. I’m a medium heavyweight; I fought at heavy because I had an injured elbow that prevented me from losing weight…” said Nivaldo, who fought Robert to a tie and took the judges’ decision.

On the lack of support, he’s serene: “It’s a problem quite common with athletes, this lack of interest from business people, but I’m in the battle. I’ve been amassing great results without a sponsor, so imagine if I had such backing. But I have great support from my family, especially my mother, who always supported me. I dedicate this win to her,” he said in finishing, now getting ready for the No-Gi Worlds, the No-Gi Brazilian Nationals and the South American Championship, in Santa Catarina.

O jovem Nivaldo Oliveira (CheckMat) é um dos melhores lutadores do Brasil hoje, e mesmo assim ainda não tem um grande patrocinador. Dois indícios de que as empresas estão perdendo uma oportunidade com ele:

1) Nivaldo foi o campeão peso pesado no Rio Open, numa categoria em que o vice absoluto, Igor Silva, que vem embalado, ficou apenas com o bronze.

2) Nivaldo chegou à final com o parceiro de equipes Robert Fonseca, que eliminara Igor Silva. Os dois então não se fizeram de rogado, e em vez de “fechar” simplesmente, brindaram o público com um confere entre os dois.

Conta mais, Nivaldo:

“Pois é, eu fiz três lutas, na primeira finalizei no braço, após aplicar o triângulo, e na segunda passei pelo Nilson Ricardo, da Nova União. Empatamos nas vantagens, 3 a 3”, começa ele.

“A grande final foi contra um companheiro de equipe, o Robert, e foi ainda mais dura porque na realidade eu nem sou da categoria pesado, né. Sou meio-pesado, lutei lá por causa de uma contusão no joelho, devido a ela não tive como perder peso…”, diz ele, que empatou com Robert e levou na decisão dos juízes.

Sobre a falta de apoio, ele é sereno: “É um problema muito comum entre atletas, falta interesse dos empresários, mas estou na batalha. Estou colecionando resultados muito bons sem patrocínio, então imagina se eu tivesse suporte, né. Mas tenho muito apoio da minha família, especialmente da minha mãe, que sempre me apoiou. Esta vitória dedico a ela”, conclui ele, que agora vai com tudo para o Mundial Sem Kimono, o Brasileiro Sem Kimono e o Sul-Americano, em Santa Catarina.

The World Pro only comes around again in 2012, but Manaus is already getting ready to host Jiu-Jitsu’s finest, according to information provided by our collaborator Arthur Castro.

The biggest city in the Brazilian state of Amazonas will be a venue for one of the qualifying legs for the tournament in Abu Dhabi, planned for November 19 and 20. Black belt Fábio Holanda is passing through the city to review Manaus’s installation.

Fábio is the head organizer of the tryouts in the cities of Natal, Brazil; Montreal, Canada; and now in Manaus, and he confirmed the competition will be held at Amadeu Teixeira gymnasium, which he says has excellent facilities.

According to Holanda, Manaus will host one of the tryouts due to a partnership with the Manaus prefecture and the Amazonas state government.

Fighter Roberto Pato is part of the team preparing the city to host the event and is one of the few natives of Amazonas state to compete in Abu Dhabi. According to him, big names are likely to make it to the tryouts, like current weight and absolute champion Rodolfo Vieira, Rodrigo Cavaca, and champions Gabi Garcia and Luanna Alzuguir.

Some news regarding this year’s tryouts, to kick off in Natal, is that fighters will only be allowed to try out in their countries of origin, unlike in previous years, where a number of Brazilians qualified for the main event at tryouts in the USA. This means the battle for berths in Brazil will be all the more hotly disputed. The prize money for winning the brown/black belt tryouts remains the same: 4,000 dollars to the winner of the absolute division and 1,000 to the runner-up. The reward for winning the other divisions is a all-expenses-paid trip to Abu Dhabi, which comes to around 8,000 dollars, according to the organizers’ calculations.

O próximo World Pro é só em 2012, mas Manaus já se prepara para receber o melhor do Jiu-Jitsu, segundo informa nosso colaborador Arthur Castro.

Uma das novidades para as seletivas deste ano, que se iniciam por Natal, é que os lutadores só poderão participar em seu país de origem, bem diferente de como foi nas edições anteriores, onde muitos brasileiros garantiram vaga nos EUA. Esse fato deixará ainda mais acirrada as lutas no Brasil. Em se tratando da premiação a categoria marrom/preta permanece junta, dando 4 mil dólares ao campeão absoluto e 1 mil ao vice. As demais categorias premiam com passagem e estadia em Abu Dhabi, algo em torno de 8 mil dólares segundo cálculos dos organizadores.

Em uma noite perfeita, nesta terça-feira, em Manaus, o Mr. Cage 4 reuniu quase mil vips para prestigiar o show de combates.

Na superluta, Gerônimo Mondragon venceu Wagner Zuluzinho por nocaute, ainda no primeiro round.

Outro destaque foi Robert “Pato” Fonseca. O representante da Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu, que recentemente se classificou para o World Pro, finalizou Sérgio Souza no primeiro assalto e é o novo dono do cinturão 84 kg do evento.

It’s no news that the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas has the goods when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu. Further proof of it came at the World Pro qualifiers in Natal, Brazil. The under-83 kg division counted submission savants like Eduardo Telles, Adriano Silva, and Nilson Ricardo, but the one who took it was Roberto “Pato” Fonseca.

The Robert Drysdale team representative defeated three opponents, among them Barbosa’s Adriano Silva, and Nilson Ricardo – via submission in the final –, who was in the absolute final at the Brazilian No-Gi Nationals.

“All my opponents were tough, out of this world, and they gave it their all. I trained hard and this was the result of my hard work,” he says in analysis.

The effort paid off. Competing in Natal is no easy talk.

“It’s always rough leaving Manaus. Even here, which is a lot closer, it was almost impossible. My teammates managed a discount ticket and I had to shell out a thousand reais from my pocket to compete. Thank God it was worth it and I managed to win,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com.

With his ticket to the World Pro secured, Pato has lofty dreams.

“It still hasn’t hit me, I’ll only believe it when I’m in Abu Dhabi! Calasans beware, I’m a-coming!” he says, issuing a warning to the current champion of the event at weight and open weight.

Não é de hoje que a capital do Amazonas é respeitada pelo bom Jiu-Jitsu. Mais uma vez, isso foi provado na seletiva para o World Pro, em Natal. A categoria até 83kg contava com feras como Eduardo Telles, Adriano Silva e Nilson Ricardo, mas quem se deu bem foi Robert Fonseca, o Pato.

O representante de Robert Drysdale derrotou três oponentes, entre eles Adriano Silva, da Barbosa, e na final, com finalização, Nilson Ricardo, que vinha da final do absoluto no Brasileiro Sem kimono.

“Todos os adversários foram duros, fora de série, e deram o sangue. Treinei muito e foi fruto do meu trabalho”, analisa.

O esforço valeu a pena. Para lutar em Natal não foi moleza.

“Sempre é complicado sair de Manaus. Mesmo aqui, que é mais próximo, quase não foi possível. Meus companheiros conseguiram uma passagem na promoção e tive que tirar mil reais do meu bolso para competir. Graças a Deus valeu a pena e consegui vencer”, conta ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Com passagem garantida para o World Pro, Pato sonha alto.

“A ficha nem caiu ainda, só vou acreditar quando estiver em Abu Dhabi! O Calasans que me aguarde, que eu to chegando!”, avisa ao atual campeão peso e absoluto da competição.

Nosso GMA em Las Vegas, Robert Drysdale venceu a segunda luta no MMA como profissional, novamente com uma finalização, um justo armlock no primeiro round (reveja aqui). O combate foi no último sábado, no Canadá, e o faixa-preta conversou com o GRACIEMAG.com sobre a luta, os novos projetos e muito mais. 

O que achou da luta contra o Clay Davidson? 

Estava tranquilo, cara. Me sinto, hoje, muito bem no ringue. Estou em casa, e me senti super bem na preparação para a luta. Perder peso dessa vez foi mais difícil, penei um pouco, mas, no dia, estava zero bala e confiante. A idéia era trocar um pouco mais em pé, mas acabamos nos agarrando no começo e consegui usar o meu Jiu-Jitsu. Foi uma experiência legal e, quem sabe, logo estarei num evento maior. 

Já se sente preparado para uma grande organização como o UFC ou Strikeforce?  

Tenho confiança e, quando vejo o UFC, sinto que consigo lutar com esses caras. Mas acho que não precisa ter pressa. Acho que o pessoal fica apressado por causa do dinheiro e não acho isso legal. Nunca foi o dinheiro o que me motivou. No Jiu-Jitsu lutei de branca, depois de um tempo lutei de azul e assim sucessivamente. Fui sem pressa até chegar à preta. No MMA tem que ser igual, não dá para pular etapas.  Minha motivação sou eu mesmo, tento ser melhor amanhã do que eu sou hoje.   

Então, para atingir o nível que almeja, o que acha que tem que trabalhar mais?  

O Jiu-Jitsu é o meu forte e não acho legal deixar ele de lado para treinar apenas a mão ou quedas. Se não treinar o que é melhor você piora como lutador. Mas, claro, dou ênfase a parte em pé e de quedas. Na verdade, treino tudo, todos os dias. Não sou daqueles que pensa que já sabe tudo no chão, então não esqueço o meu Jiu-Jitsu. Mesmo não competindo, gosto de fazer parte da evolução desse esporte, porque é o que eu amo. 

Já são duas finalizações. Pretende colocar alguns nocautes no cartel também?  

Treino em pé com uma galera que é profissional de boxe, então sinto confiança. Mas, por outro lado, acho uma besteira querer virar trocador de uma hora para outra. Lógico, pode acontecer de o cara anular o meu chão, mas a mão é o plano B. Tenho 13 anos de Jiu-Jitsu e dois de mão. Então é como se eu fosse um faixa-azul na trocação e não seria inteligente trocar no vale-tudo agora. Teria condições, mas seria um erro tático. Prefiro manter o chão como o plano A e dificilmente isso vai mudar. 

Quais os novos projetos? 

Estou com um time muito bom filiado a mim lá em Manaus. Teve até o Robert Fonseca “Pato”, que se classificou para o World Pro. Vou arrumar umas lutas para eles e quero fazer um desafio de Jiu-Jitsu com essa galera contra os lutadores daqui de Vegas. Estou trabalhando nisso e vai ser bacana.

Our GMA in Las Vegas Robert Drysdale won his second professional MMA fight, again by submission, with a snug first-round armbar (watch it here). The bout took place last Saturday in Canada, and the black belt spoke with GRACIEMAG.com about the fight, his new projects, and much more.

What’s your take on your fight against Clay Davidson?

It was cool. Nowadays, I feel good in the ring. I feel at home, and I felt really well preparing for the fight. This time losing weight was harder, I suffered a bit, but on the day I was at full form and confident. My plan was to stand and trade a little longer, but we ended up grappling early on and I managed to use my Jiu-Jitsu. It was a cool experience, and – who knows? – maybe soon I’ll be in a bigger event.

Do you feel you’re already prepared to enter a big promotion like the UFC or Strikeforce?

I’m confident, and when I watch the UFC, I feel I can fight those guys. But I feel there’s no need to rush things. I feel a lot of guys feel in a hurry because of the money and I don’t think that’s cool. It never was the money that motivated me. In Jiu-Jitsu I competed at white belt, after a little while I competed at blue, and so on. I wasn’t in a hurry to get to black belt. It has to be the same in MMA; you can’t go skipping steps. I’m my own motivator, I try to be better tomorrow than I am today.

Só, to make it to the level you yearn for, what eles do you feel you need to work on?

Jiu-Jitsu’s my forte and I don’t feel it’s cool to set it aside to work only on my hands or takedowns. If you don’t practice what you’re best at you’ll become a worse fighter. But of course, I prioritize my standup and takedowns. Truth is, I train everything every day. I’m not one of those guys who thinks he knows everything there is to know on the ground, so I don’t forget about my Jiu-Jitsu. Even when I’m not competing, I like being a part of the evolution of the sport, because it’s what I love.

Now you count two submission wins. Do you plan to get some knockouts on your record, as well?

I train standup with a group of professional boxers, so I feel confident. But on the other hand, I feel it’s nonsense to want to become a striker over night. Of course, it could happen that the guy thwarts my ground game, but striking’s plan B. I have thirteen years of Jiu-Jitsu under my belt and two striking. So it’s as though I were a blue belt in the standup department, and it wouldn’t be smart for me to stand and bang in MMA right now. I have what it takes, but it would be a tactical mistake. I’d rather stick to the ground as plan A, and that’s not likely to change.

Any new projects?

I’ve got a really good team affiliated with me over in Manaus. Even Roberto “Pato” Fonseca, who just qualified for the World Pro, is there. I’m going to set up some fights for him and I want to set up a Jiu-Jitsu challenge between those guys and the fighters here in Vegas. That’s what I’m working on and it should be cool.

A lot was at stake this Saturday in Natal, Brazil. Besides the thirteen all-expenses-paid trips to the World Pro finals in Abu Dhabi, five thousand dollars would be distributed among the absolute winners, guaranteeing hard-fought battles. And in the first South American qualifier to take place in Brazil’s northeast, despite athletes from the entire country participating, the representatives from the northern region of the country showed their grounds skills are up to speed. Among the black belt standouts, Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato” took top spot in both the under 92kg division and the absolute.

The CheckMat brown belt, who this year closed out the absolute division with Marcus Bochecha at the Worlds, put on a show. At weight, the beast from the state of Paraíba had three matches. In the first, he swept and took Renan Vital’s (Gordo) back. Next he won with a choke. In the decider, he attacked the hard-nosed Fabiano Boi’s (Alliance) back till putting both hooks in. That stamped his ticket to Abu Dhabi.

Then, Antonio beat two more opponents in the absolute, until closing out with Nilson Ricardo (Nova União) in second and Fabiano Boi and Caio Alencar (Kimura Nova União) in third. On the winners’ stand, professor Helder “Bob Sponja” Medeiras was left with no choice but to promote his student to black belt, an emotional conclusion to the event.

In the over 92 kg division, another beast from the northeast – the city of Natal – had it all. Caio Alencar (Kimura/Nova União) submitted everyone in his way. First with a triangle, then an arm-triangle. In the semifinal he won via armbat and, in the match deciding his spot at the World Pro, against Vitor Hugo (Nova União), the submission came by way of a choke from back mount.

The under-83 kg division ent to Amazonas state, with Robert Drysdale’s ace Robert “Pato” Fonseco. On the way, the black belt tapped out fighters of the caliber of Adriano Silva (Barbosa). Fighting a total of three matches, Pato’s gold came after overcoming Nilson Ricardo (Nova União), runner-up at the Brazilian No-Gi Nationals, who overcame hard-nosed competitors like Eduardo Telles (Nine Nine). An armbar secured him his all-expenses-paid tri to the World Pro.

The under-83 kg weight group was decided between Davi Ramos (Top Brother) and Leonardo “Cascão” Saggioro. Davi took the upper hand in the even match with a penalty point. Earlier, the champion landed a choke from back mount, went past Helder “Bob Sponja” (CheckMat) by two advantages to one and beat Thiago Rocha (Alliance) with a sweep.

Richard Ávila (Kamikaze) flew in from Criciuma, in the south of the country, and didn’t regret it. Ávila defeated four opponents and didn’t have to do the final. The reason: the semifinal between Diego Quadros (Nova União) and Maximiliano (CheckMat) ended with both being disqualified, for three penalty points each. All that was left for Richard to do was celebrate his travel and board in Abu Dhabi.

Dynamic duo from Fabio Gurgel’s team Pinky and Brain – read Gabrielle Garcia and Luanna Alzuguir – carry on with their quest to conquer the world! Gabi landed to takedowns and finished with a clock choke in the over 62 kg division. In a three-woman bracket, she saw her opponent win her next match to go through to the final. There was no need to fight, however, as she withdrew due to injury, securing Gabi the gold. Now Luanna Alzuguir, in the under 62 kg division, finished her first two matches with a triangle and a choke. In the final she faced off with Marina Ribeiro (CheckMat), who also finished all her matches. In an evenly-matched dispute, ending in a draw, the referee decided in the Alliance reps favor.

The show didn’t belong just to the brown and black belts. At purple, Rio de Janeiro’s Alexandre Cavalieri (Gordo) had a total of eight matches to take third at weight and gold in the lightweight absolute, securing his trip to the World Pro. Now São Paulo’s Arnaldo de Oliveira (Gabas J) had seven matches to win his weight and the heavyweight absolute at purple belt.

In the blue belt division, Denílson Bischiliari (Atos) had four matches at weight and another four in the absolute to take two golds. In the heavyweight absolute, Gregory Rodrigues came up spades. Among the blue belt girls, the young Jaqueline Amorim (Asle), just fifteen, and Suellen Tobias, who won the final with a forearm choke, are the big winners heading to the United Arab Emirates.
