Holding three belts in his undefeated, two-year career, Caio Magalhães is the latest UFC signee. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt, who this season snapped up the Rio Open title and a WPJJ berth by winning the tryouts in Natal, Brazil, will face Fabio Maldonado on January 14 at UFC 142.

The submission ace from Dragon Fight/Nova União shall step in for Stanislav Nedkov, who had visa woes and will be unable to make it. “I still can’t believe it. So much training, so much fighting—I am speechless,” he told GRACIEMAG.com with excitement.

The beast from Ceará, Brazil, who recently won the Shooto Brazil middleweight title, gave hints as to his game plan for his octagon debut: “I’ll do my game, take him down and show him Ceará Jiu-Jitsu’s might. I expect a lot of positive energy from Ceará.”

This Friday, another three fighters were confirmed for combat at the HSBC Arena. Carlos Prater steps in for an injured Siyar Bahadurzada, Ricardo Funch returns to the promotion in place of Paulo Thiago against Mike Pyle, while Gabriel Napão rejoins the fray against Ednaldo “Lula”. Três cinturões em dois anos de uma carreira invicta, Caio Magalhães é o novo contratado do UFC. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, que nesta temporada abocanhou o título do Rio Open e a vaga para Abu-Dhabi na Seletiva de Natal do World Pro, encara Fabio Maldonado no UFC Rio 2, no dia 14 de janeiro.

O “Monstro” da Dragon Fight/Nova União substitui o búlgaro Stanislav Nedkov, que teve problemas com o visto. “Estou sem acreditar até agora. Foi muito treino, muita porrada, nem consigo falar”, disse emocionado ao GRACIEMAG.com.

A fera cearense, que recentemente faturou o cinturão até 84kg do Shooto Brasil, já adiantou qual o jogo para estrear com vitória no octagon: “Vou fazer meu jogo, botar pra baixo e mostrar a força do Jiu-Jitsu cearense. Espero muita energia positiva do Ceará”, completou.

A fera do amazonas Fabio “Jungle Boy” Serrão lutou no fim de semana passado em Springfield, Massachussets, num dos maiores eventos de grappling dos EUA, o Naga East Cost. Mais uma vez o lutador subiu na parte mais alta do pódio. Fabinho conquistou o cinturão da categoria leve faixa-preta e ainda abocanhou o terceiro lugar do sem kimono avançado.

“Na verdade viajei para Massachussets para lutar um evento de MMA e ajudar meu companheiro de equipe Ricardo Funch, que irá lutar no UFC, em Vancouver, no Canadá. Mas, infelizmente, o evento que eu iria lutar foi cancelado. Então decidi dar minha pequena ajuda a Team Link para tentarmos conseguir conquistar o primeiro lugar geral no Naga e esta foi a sétima vez consecutiva que a equipe vence”, conta Serrão.

“A Team link está de parabéns. Arrebentamos no fim de semana, agora estamos todos focados na preparação do Ricardo Funch, que, sem sombra de dúvidas, vai arrebentar no octagon do UFC e trazer mais uma vitória para a equipe”, finalizou o faixa-preta.

The beast form Amazonas state Fabio “Jungle Boy” Serrão fought this past weekend in Springfield, Massachusetts, at one of the biggest grappling events in the USA, NAGA East Coast. Once again the fighter made it to the top of the winners’ stand. Fabio captured the lightweight black belt division belt and even nabbed third place in the no-gi advanced category.

“Truth is I went to Massachusetts to fight at an MMA event and help my teammate Ricardo Funch, who will fight at the UFC event in Vancouver, Canada. But, unfortunately, the event I was going to fight at was cancelled. So I decided to try and help Team Link a bit in going for first place in the overall NAGA placing and this was the seventh time in a row the team wins,” recounts Serrão.

“Team Link is to be congratulated. We kicked butt this weekend, and now we’re focused on the preparations of Ricardo Funch, who, without a doubt, is going to kick butt in the UFC octagon and bring back yet another win for the team,” said the black belt in finishing.

Although it has not yet been officially confirmed, word of some future Ultimate Fighting Championship matchups has been leaked. Thus, it is likely we may see Rogerio Minotouro, Kimbo Slice, Josh Koshcheck and Ricardo Funch in events down the road.

Coming off a win over Luis “Banha” at UFC 106, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Rogerio Minotouro is being tipped to face Forrest Griffin, who beat Tito Ortiz in his last appearance. The news was broken by Fighters Only magazine, but no date or location has been defined. In a recent conversation with GRACIEMAG.com, Rogerio commented on the possibility:

“It would be a good fight. Forrest is an aggressive guy, fights standing, and I like that. He also has excellent Jiu-Jitsu and absurd stamina. It would be a really good fight,” he said.

Another promising matchup is between Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley. The bout should figure on the card for UFC 113, on May 1^st in Canada. England’s Daley has been impressing in the octagon, having gotten the knockout in both his appearances in the UFC.

Crowd favorite Kimbo Slice is another who should be making another appearance for the organization. Kimbo won in his UFC debut against Houston Alexander, in December. His next challenge will be Matt Mitrione, also at UFC 113 in Canada.

To close out the report on likely matchups, Ricardo Funch suffered the first loss of his career in his debut for the organization, against Johnny Hendricks, at UFC 107. On March 27, the Golden Boy, as he is known, will have a chance to redeem himself against Matthew Riddle, at UFC 111, in New Jersey.

Em noite de disputa de cinturão entre BJ Penn e Diego Sanchez, quatro brasileiros estarão em ação neste sábado, no Tennessee, quando acontece o UFC 107. São eles Wilson Gouveia, Rousimar Toquinho, Lucio Linhares e Ricardo Funch. As lutas principais serão transmitidas ao vivo no canal Combate e Combate HD.

Sem lutar desde fevereiro, vindo de derrota para Nate Marquardt, Wilson Gouveia terá Alan Belcher pela frente, que também vem de derrota. “Belcher é super forte, possui um grande Jiu-Jitsu e um muay thai afiado. Eu treinei muito, e, se Deus quiser, tudo dará certo para mim”, comentou o brazuca.

Como de costume, o evento traz um combate entre brasileiros. Sem lutar desde janeiro, período que tratou algumas contusões, Rousimer Toquinho não terá moleza contra o estreante no UFC Lucio Linhares. E o oponente, que vem numa boa sequencia de vitórias, não está intimidado. “Eu sei que o Toquinho é um fenômeno, mas estou em grande fase. Venci minhas últimas cinco lutas e levarei isso para dentro do octógono”, adianta a fera, em entrevista ao site oficial do UFC.

Outro brazuca que estréia na organização, Ricardo Funch encara Johny Hendricks. No combate, ambos são invictos, e Funch demonstra confiança para seguir assim. “Eu lutarei muito bem, porque minha intenção não é só chegar ao UFC, mas sim bater meus oponentes e eventualmente entrar no top 10. Algumas pessoas já me falaram que é melhor estrear nas preliminares, porque há menos pessoas assistindo. Eu digo que eu não posso sentir a diferença entre 20 mil e um milhão de pessoas. Para mim, a pressão é a mesma. Vou brilhar.”

Na principal luta da noite, o atual campeão peso leve BJ Penn defende o cinturão contra Diego Sanchez. Quem aposta num combate emocionante é o próprio presidente do UFC, Dana White: “Será a melhor performance de Penn e Sanchez jamais vista.”

Em outros combates aguardados, Frank Mir terá Cheick Congo pela frente e o ex-desafiante ao cinturão de leves Kenny Florian luta com a pedreira Clay Guida.

Invicto no MMA, com sete combates, Ricardo Funch estreia neste sábado (12 de dezembro), no UFC 107, no Tennessee. Representante do Team Link, mesmo time de feras como Gabriel Napão, Funch é uma das grandes esperanças do mestre Marco Alvan, líder do time. O adversário de Ricardo, conhecido como “Golden Boy”, será Johny Hendricks, que também jamais perdeu.

“Nas lutas que eu assisti, ele foi bem dominante e é muito bom. Mas quem não é? O UFC é o lugar onde os melhores estão, então vou dar meu máximo”, adianta Funch em declaração ao site do UFC.

Sobre o fato de encarar um oponente invicto, Ricardo não se preocupa. Ligado nos pontos fortes de Hendricks, trabalhou duro o wrestling.

“Eu já lutei contra outros invictos e digo que a pressão não é nem o meu e nem o recorde dele. A pressão é lutar no UFC. Ele já respirou ares que eu ainda não respirei, mas sei que vou me sair bem psicologicamente. Obviamente, venho treinando mais wrestling do que de costume para enfrentar o Johny, mas o restante é a mesma rotina que me levou até o Ultimate. Isso significa afiar minhas técnicas na trocação e nas finalizações.”

E se confiança é um bom começo para ir bem na organização, isso não falta ao baiano.

“Eu lutarei muito bem, porque minha intenção não é só chegar ao UFC, mas sim bater meus oponentes e eventualmente entrar no top 10. Undefeated in his seven-fight MMA career, Ricardo Funch will make his octagon debut at UFC 107 this Saturday, December 12, in Tennessee. A representative of Team Link, the same as Gabriel Napão, Funch is one of team leader Marco Alvan’s great hopes. Ricardo, otherwise known as “Golden Boy”, will face Johnny Hendricks, another undefeated fighter.

“From the fights I’ve seen of his, he was very dominant and really good. But who isn’t? The UFC is where the best are, so I’m going to give it my all,” says Funch on the official UFC website.

“On facing an undefeated opponent, Ricardo is unworried. Aware of Hendricks’s strengths, he worked hard on his wrestling.

“I’ve fought undefeated guys in the past and I can tell you the pressure doesn’t come from my or his record. The pressure is fighting in the UFC. He has been through something I haven’t been through yet, but I know I’ll do well psychologically. Obviously, I’ve been training more wrestling than I am used to so I can face Johnny, but the rest is the same old routine that got me into the UFC. That means brushing up on my striking and submissions.”

And if confidence is a good start to entering the organization on the right foot, the Bahia native has no lack of it.

“I’ll fight well, because my aim isn’t to just make it to the UFC, but to beat all my opponents and eventually be top 10. Some people say it’s better to debut in a preliminary fight, because there are less people watching. I say I won’t feel the difference between 20 thousand and a million people. To me the pressure’s the same, but I’ll shine,” he says in closing.

“Belcher is super strong, has good Jiu-Jitsu and sharp muay thai. I trained a lot and, God willing, everything will go well for me,” he is quoted as saying on the UFC website.

“I feel this will be a good fight because our styles are similar. But the fact that we are both coming off losses is further motivation,” he adds.

Anderson is the champion because he’s the best, period” Wilson Gouveia

A former light heavyweight, Gouveia will fight at middleweight. The change of division could set him up to face Anderson Silva. Nevertheless, the American Top Team representative discards a confrontation with the current champ. At least for the time being.

“I’m conscious of the fact I’m not ready to face a guy of the caliber of Anderson Silva. For that reason I’m trying to improve as a fighter, not just technically, but psychologically as well,” remarks the Brazilian, who spares no praise for the current champion.

“It’s one thing for someone to think he can beat the champion, but to win is completely different. Anderson is the champion because he’s the best, period. Of course one day he’ll lose the belt, but by the time that happens a lot of competitors will show confidence they can beat him and, when fight time comes, they won’t be able to accomplish what they promised to,” he says in finishing.
