Renzo Gracie México es la academia de Jiujitsu Brasileño con más prestigio y antigüedad en nuestro país. GMA member Mario Delgado is pleased with his team.

Once again, his academy Renzo Gracie Mexico was the National champions.

With this years title, the team now has nine first place trophies on its shelf, being seven of Gi competitions and two of No-Gi divisions.

The 2012 Mexico national Jiu-Jitwsu Championship had the presence of two times absolute black belt world champion, Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros.

The event organized by FNJJB (Mexico Jiu-Jitsu National Federation) had over 600 athletes.

The team standings were: 1st – Renzo Gracie México; 2nd – Brasa; 3rd – Gracie Barra.

GMA member Mario Delgado had a very special guest last September 8.

He welcomed none other than UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez at his Renzo Gracie Mexico academy.

Velasquez taught a private class for Mexican police officers.

Mexico’s Univision was present and interviewed Cain at RGM.

Kenny Florian was in Mexico on October 9. There, the black belt stopped by the Renzo Gracie academy led by our GMA Mario Delgado. Delgado’s team often receives UFC fighters, like Cain Velasquez, and Florian was kind enough to teach some techniques, on his visit.

“He demonstrated a lot of combinations of takedowns to back mount for the finish, his specialty, as he has six wins by rear-naked choke in the UFC,” remarks Mario Delgado, who later spent a few days with Kenny in Acapulco.

Delgado also was the intermediary between former UFC title challenger Kenny and GRACIEMAG.com for this interview:

You are a Jiu-Jitsu black belt. What is Jiu-Jitsu’s importance in your MMA performance.

It’s a really important part. Everyone has to have a solid level of Jiu-Jitsu to be successful in MMA. It also happens that Jiu-Jitsu is the reason I got started in Jiu-Jitsu.

Do you train in the gi a lot?

These days I don’t train in the gi that much, I just do it for recreation. But I got my background in the gi and, up until brown belt, I’d compete at the Worlds and Pans in the USA.

So you don’t feel it’s a good idea to wear the gi when training for MMA?

I don’t feel the gi is good for MMA, but it’s an important part of my Jiu-Jitsu background. If I hadn’t trained in the gi, my Jiu-Jitsu wouldn’t be as good as it is now. It’s the foundation for my game and the reason I have so many MMA submission wins (nine).

No dia 9 de outubro, Kenny Florian esteve no México. Por lá, o faixa-preta visitou a academia Renzo Gracie México, comandada pelo nosso GMA Mario Delgado. A equipe de Delgado costuma receber feras do UFC como Cain Velasquez, e Florian foi passar algumas das suas melhores técnicas.

“Ele mostrou muitas combinações de derrubar e pegar as costas para finalizar, a especialidade dele, que tem seis finalizações no UFC por mata-leão”, comenta Mario Delgado, que ainda passou alguns dias com Kenny em Acapulco.

Delgado também intermediou um papo entre Kenny, ex-desafiante ao cinturão de leves do UFC, com o GRACIEMAG.com. Confira:

Você é faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu. Qual a importância disso para o seu desempenho no MMA?

É uma parte muito importante. Qualquer um precisa ter o Jiu-Jitsu num nível bom para ter êxito no MMA. Inclusive, a razão de ter começado no MMA é o Jiu-Jitsu.

Você treina muito de kimono?

Hoje não treino tanto de kimono, só visto o pano por recreação. Mas me formei com o treinamento de kimono e, até a faixa-marrom, lutei no Mundial e no Pan de Jiu-Jitsu, nos EUA.

Então você não acha interessante usar o kimono nos treinamentos para o MMA?

Não acho bom treinar de kimono para o MMA, mas foi uma coisa importante na minha formação no Jiu-Jitsu. Se não tivesse treinado com kimono, meu Jiu-Jitsu não seria tão bom. É a base do meu jogo e, por isso, tenho tantas finalizações no MMA (nove).

As previously reported here on GRACIEMAG.com (see here), Cain Velasquz was in Mexico polishing up his Jiu-Jitsu at the country’s Renzo Gracie academy led by black belt and GMA Mario Delgado. On the coming 23^rd of October the purple belt Velasquez will have his work cut out for him when he takes on Brock Lesnar in challenging for the UFC heavyweight belt. Delgado had a chat with GRACIEMAG.com about the illustrious visitor.

How was Cain’s visit?

He showed us some single-leg and double-leg takedown techniques, his specialty. He showed some standing sweeps, among other things.

Did you guys focus on any positions specifically for the Lesnar fight?

Cain is much quicker than Carwin (Lesnar’s last opponent) in the standup department and has a much better, more well-rounded game. Cain won the IBJJF No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu World Championship as a blue belt. He’s always trying to pass guard and get the mount to use his ground-and-pound. His Jiu-Jitsu game is better than Carwin’s, so we figured he can try for a takedown from the sprawl and position himself on top.

Does he visit your academy often?

This was his second time here. I do broadcasting for the UFC in Mexico and so when he’s here we do promo clips for TV at my academy.

What does Velasquez think of Jiu-Jitsu? Does he like training in the gi, too?

He trains in the gi a bit, but he does more no-gi training with his trainer Dave Camarillo.

Tell us a bit about the work you’re doing in Mexico. How are things going at the Renzo Gracie branch you head?

Things are going great here in Mexico. We’re putting together the National Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and I’m the president. This year we’ll hold the sixth Mexican National Championship, where we expect over 500 competitors. Jiu-Jitsu is growing by leaps and bounds here. The Renzo Gracie Mexico academy has more than 200 students and is five-time champion of the country. Besides Cain, we’ve had athletes like Robert Drysdale, Kenny Florian, Marcelo Garcia, Fernando Tererê, Royce, Rolles and Kyra Gracie, among other drop in.

Two of the heavyweight names in world MMA, Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez, will face off October 23 for the UFC belt at the 121^st installment of the UFC. Both are heavy-handed fighters with wrestling as their main armaments. But what’s the pair’s Jiu-Jitsu like?

It’s no news that Lesnar has two-time absolute world champion of Jiu-Jitsu Rodrigo Comprido on his side to sharpen up his ground game. Velasquez doesn’t want to be left behind and is also sprucing up his Jiu-Jitsu for the showdown. The son of Mexicans, the UFC heavy-hitter was in Mexico, where he worked out at the country’s Renzo Gracie branch under the command of Mario Delgado, our GMA.

Dois dos maiores nomes entre os pesos pesados do MMA mundial, Brock Lesnar e Cain Velasquez disputam o cinturão do UFC no dia 23 de outubro, na edição 121 da organização. Ambos têm o wrestling como principal qualidade e contam com a mão pesada. Mas como vai o Jiu-Jitsu dos lutadores?

As usual, Delgado’s school dominated the podium. “We doubled the number of medals the second place won”, celebrates Mario.

Happy birthday to Xande Ribeiro, our GMA member in San Diego, California. The two-time absolute Jiu-Jitsu world champion turned 29 this Wednesday. And 2010 begun just perfect to Xande. His first girl was just born and he does not hide how he feels about her: “Having a great day, my daughter is 3 months old(1 year with belly time ). I feel so happy and blessed . My birthday gift to myself was a lot of training today…sparring of course. And thank you all for so much care and love you show me. This inspires me and makes me go forward even stronger. Leopoldo and Henle

In Ventura, California, black belt Fabio Leopoldo, head of the GB branch there, promoted his student Joseph “Leonidas” Henle to purple belt last Friday! Any graduation is special, but this one is even more. Henle was the first student Leopoldo had when he moved to Ventura. “Even before I opened the academy I gave private lessons to Joe,” said Professor Fabio.

In Denver, Colorado, black belt Amal Easton has come up with another way to improve the teaching skills of his students at Easton BJJ. The EBJJ Adult instructor course that starts Febuary 22^nd. It is a 36 hour course and consists of 12 hours of classroom, 12 hours of assisting / monitoring and 12 hours of practical one on one or small group teaching. Down in Florida, Professor Larry Shealy congratulates his purple belt instructor Nathan Lang for getting the Black belt rank in Haganah, an Israeli combat system. Lang was awarded his Black Belt after 3 days of training with Haganah founder and Main Instructor Mike Lee Kanarak. Nathan is one of 34 people in the world who have achieved this rank!! Also in Florida, a encounter of GMAs took place at Renzo Gracie Weston. Stan Beck welcomed Renzo Gracie Mexico’s headcoach Mario Delgado for a seminar. Read what Beck had to say about the class: “Everyone loved it and were raving about the new moves.  I saw right away some students even using those moves they learned that night. In illinois, Marcos Barros, head of  GB Springfield, also have good news. This January 23^rd, Austin Jordan will step into the ring and fight MMA at The Courage Fighting Championships in Decatur.  The team is getting together to support Austin and half of the procceds with the tickets to the fight will go to GB Cares Orphan Rescue.
